Short version: ABC 24 Times does not set cookies of its own. We do not run analytics cookies, advertising cookies or cross-site trackers. The site does use your browser's local storage for a handful of conveniences, and only when you trigger them. This page explains each one in plain language so you can decide what you are comfortable with.
What is local storage?
Local storage is a small area inside your browser where a website can save short pieces of text. Unlike a cookie, it is not sent to a server with every request. It stays on your device, in the browser you used, until you clear it. If you open the site on another phone or laptop, nothing carries over.
What we store, and when
- Theme. If you switch between light and dark appearance, we remember your choice so the page does not flash the wrong colors next time.
- Saved stories. When you bookmark an article, its identifier is kept in a list on your device so your saved shelf can be shown again.
- Edition. If you pick a preferred edition (US, Global or Asia), that choice is remembered. See the Editions page for what the editions mean.
- Poll vote. If you vote in a reader poll, a marker is kept so the poll shows your answer and does not invite a second vote from the same browser.
- Form addresses. At launch, email addresses typed into the newsletter or waiting-list forms are saved on your device only. They are not sent to a mailing list, because no real list is connected yet.
Nothing on this list is written until you act. Simply reading stories does not create any of these entries.
How to clear it
This page includes a clear button added by the site. Using it removes everything listed above from your browser in one step. You can also clear site data from your browser's own settings, which is useful if you want to remove it for every site at once. After clearing, the site simply starts fresh with default settings.
Third-party requests
Although we set no cookies, loading a page can involve requests to other providers. At present these include a web-font service, a content delivery network that supplies styling code, and an image host. When your browser fetches files from them, those providers can see technical details such as your IP address and browser type, as with any web request. We do not control their logs. Our Privacy Policy describes this in more detail and explains how to reach us with questions.
Your choices
- Clear local storage at any time, using the button here or your browser settings.
- Use a private browsing window, which discards stored data when the window closes.
- Block third-party requests with a content blocker; the site should remain readable, though fonts and some images may look different.
If this changes
If we ever add analytics, advertising or any cookie, we will update this page first, explain what is collected and why, and ask for your consent where it is required. Questions can go to [email protected].
