The singer blamed a bout of bronchitis when she pulled out of performing at the Grammys at the last minute on Monday.

However, some music industry sources are claiming Rihanna was highly emotional in the hours leading up to her shock cancellation.

Insiders connected to the show told TMZ.com that the 27-year-old was ‘screaming and hysterical’ following her rehearsal earlier that day.

Source said Rihanna was ‘loud and upset’ as she expressed displeasure at how the rehearsal had gone at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Rihanna revealed she was pulling out of the show after doctors advised her not to perform after suffering from bronchitis for several days.

Her spokesperson at the time said she was ordered to go on vocal rest for 48 hours because ‘she was at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal cords.’

The singer had been taking antibiotics for three days, but they ‘did not kill the infection adequately’.

Earlier on Monday, Rihanna had performed her song Kiss It Better Twice twice during rehearsals.

Following doctors’ advice, she left following rehearsals after deciding against sticking around to watch the show.

She tweeted an apology to fans as the show was broadcast on CBS: ‘#NAVY so sorry I couldn’t be there ….. Thanks Grammys and CBS for your support tonight.’

Recording Academy President Neil Portnow told L.A. Times: ‘We got word from her folks that she was taking antibiotics, she made rehearsal and it was OK.

‘But the doctor came in and examined her and said you have a risk if you sing. We regret that, we were all looking forward to her performance. She regrets it. But that’s what happens with live events.’

However, Rihanna’s decision to pull out came ahead of a calamitous night for the Grammys, with a string of errors taking place.

Rihanna wasn’t the only singer to pull out with Lauryn Hill also cancelling her planned duet with The Weeknd.

The 58th Grammy Awards was also marred by technical glitches throughout the evening, with Justin Bieber and Adele’s performances severely affected by sound issues.

British singer Adele took to Twitter after her performance to explain what went wrong: ‘The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was. It made it sound out of tune. S**t happens.’

Portnow admitted the sound team tried to cover it up by switching to a back-up system but the transition wasn’t ‘seamless’.

Her cancellation came two days after Rihanna performed well at the MusiCares Person of the Year honouring Lionel Richie at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Saturday.

Chat show host James Corden later gave viewers an insight into what they had missed – explaining that he was meant to introduce the star.

He said: ‘A couple of weeks ago, I got asked if I would introduce Rihanna on the show.

‘I get this phone call saying Rihanna has this big thing planned for her song Kiss It Better and she’s doing like a whole ’80s talk show thing and it’s going to be really cool.

‘What she wants you to do is be like an ’80s talk show host and I’d have funny glasses and I’d introduce Rihanna, she’d come out and do a song and then at the end she’d come and sit with me, like it was it’s own talk show which they called As It Lays.’

The Grammys gig would have been a chance for Rihanna to capitalise on the momentum following the long-anticipated release of her latest album, Anti, which she finally unveiled for free via Tidal on January 28.

On Friday, she presented her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection during New York Fashion Week.
