Chris Paul, NBA players react to Lakers drafting Bronny James

After all the wild speculation, rumors and reports, Bronny James is officially a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. He will likely make history by playing on the same team as his father, LeBron James, just as everyone has expected for months. Rich Paul’s polarizing approach worked to full effect and helped ensure that the 19-year-old stays in LA.

Still, it is quite surreal to see this union actually come to fruition. The idea that such a bucket-list item could even be crossed off was mind-boggling only a short time ago. LeBron James’ incomparable durability enabled what should have been a pipedream to become a realistic aspiration, and now a reality.

Many fans take issue with how this process shook out, but the NBA world is celebrating this unprecedented development. “Special!! Congrats, Bronny!” Golden State Warriors point guard and future Hall of Famer Chris Paul posted on X after the Lakers selected the 6-foot-1 guard with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine focused on the emotional component of this move, marveling at the joyous thought of a father sharing the court with his son. “Imagine being able to play with your son!” the two-time All-Star said. “This is historic, having 2 boys my self I couldn’t {imagine} how that would feel.” 10-year NBA veteran C.J. Watson echoed that sentiment. “Going to be dope to play with your son on the big stage,” he wrote.

Of course, this is only the beginning of the outpouring of reactions.

How LeBron-Bronny James duo will enhance the Lakers brand even more

Lakers icon Magic Johnson made sure to offer his own well wishes to Bronny James while also doing his part to hype up the USC product.

“Congratulations to Bronny James on being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers!” he said. “This is a historic moment because LeBron and Bronny are the first father-son duo to play in the NBA at the same time and on the same team. Watching Bronny suit up for the Lakers during Summer League in Vegas will be must-see TV!”

The last part of Johnson’s post is especially important to the franchise, league and television networks. LeBron James is already the face of the NBA, but now that his son is also his teammate, the revenue opportunities should be absurdly abundant. ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins touched on the intriguing business aspect of the Lakers’ momentous father-son pairing.

“Can you imagine what the Nike Campaign is about to look like with Bron and Bronny?” the 2008 champion posted. “MONUMENTAL.” The sports apparel behemoth is already getting started with its new platform, with plenty of memorable spots sure to follow.

The downside to this advertising and television boom will be the countless eyes that are glued to Bronny James throughout his rookie campaign. There be a long line of people ready to say “I told you so” and many others who anxiously wait for him to develop into a worthwhile 3-and-D contributor for a championship-caliber squad.

For now, though, the entire James family is undoubtedly basking in the excitement and jubilation of the moment. The Lakers hope that this milestone precedes several others.
