The NFL lost a legend today, as former NFL MVP Roman Gabriel has passed away at the age of 83.

According to a post from his son on social media, Gabriel “peacefully” of natural causes in his home Saturday morning. His son, Roman Gabriel III, asked for prayers and privacy as he and his family members mourn their tragic loss.

“I am sad to announce my father Roman Gabriel @RGabriel4HOF passed away peacefully this morning of natural causes at his home,” the tweet read. “The entire family asked for your prayers, and to please respect our privacy. I love you dad.“

Gabriel is best known for his time under center with the Los Angeles Rams. In 1962, he was drafted by both the AFL’s Oakland Raiders and the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, with the first- and second- overall picks of each league’s draft, respectively. He would go on to sign with the Rams, where he would have plenty of individual success.

He would play 11 seasons in L.A., making it to three Pro Bowls and earning NFL MVP honors in 1969 after leading the entire league in touchdown passes. In 1973, he would join the Philadelphia Eagles, earning Comeback Player of the Year after throwing for the most yards and touchdowns among all quarterbacks in the league. He spent five seasons in Philly before calling it quits.

Unfortunately, he never got to win a championship and he wasn’t inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. However, he did have his number 18 retired by the South Carolina Gamecocks, and he is also enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Roman Gabriel Is One Of Many Great Los Angeles Rams Quarterbacks

Gabriel is just one of many impressive names who have suited up under center for the Los Angeles Rams organization. Some of the more recent names include Kurt Warner, Jared Goff and current Rams QB Matthew Stafford. Before Gabriel, there were Hall of Famers Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin.

Gabriel’s 154 career touchdown passes with the Rams are a franchise record, and his 22,223 yards are third on the franchise’s all-time list, behind Jim Everett and Marc Bulger.

Out thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Roman Gabriel.

One of these haters took to social media with a disgusting response to a recent video of Dallas Wings stars Kalani Brown and Teaira McCowan. “They letting trans inna WNBA,” the hater wrote. Angel Reese fired back at this message with a blunt response in defense of her new colleagues. “Yall never seen black tall women that are FINE??? yall so weird & insecure and it SHOWS!!!” Reese wrote.  Reese has been outspoken about the support she’s received from WNBA veterans so far in her young career. “Being at the draft last week, being able to talk to Nneka [Ogwumike], being able to talk to Satou [Sabally], being able to talk to a lot of the vets, they were telling me they were super excited for us to come here,” Reese said earlier this year. “They understand and they know our impact.” Reese was stellar in her first two preseason games for the Chicago Sky. The No. 7 overall pick will make her regular-season debut when the Sky take the court against Brown, McCowan and the Wings on Wednesday, May 15.

BREAKING: Patrick Mahomes is saddened by the news that the former Chicago Bears quarterback has passed away

The Bears announced this weekend that Bob Avellini, who played with Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton and helped lead the team to the 1977 playoffs, died of cancer at the age of 70. The team didn’t say when he died. Avellini and Payton played out the best season of their careers in 1977, with the Bears and Minnesota Vikings both going 9-5 in the NFC North. The Vikings won the division, and the Bears got a Wild Card berth. The Dallas Cowboys got the better of them, however, beating them 37-7 in the first round. Avellini threw 11 touchdown passes for a career-high 2,004 yards and 18 interceptions that season. Payton rushed for north of 1,800 yards and 14 scores.  “Former Bears quarterback Bob Avellini passed away Saturday at the age of 70,” the Bears announced on Sunday. “Bob was one-of-kind, a fierce and tough competitor,” the team added. “He’s perhaps best remembered for leading the Bears on an improbable run in 1977 to our first postseason appearance in fourteen years. He will be missed.” The former QB threw for 7,111 yards, 33 TDs, and 69 interceptions in nine seasons, having played in 73 games. He came into the NFL the same year as Payton; the Bears took him in the sixth round in 1975 following his career at Maryland. Payton, on the other hand, was the No. 4 overall pick.

Former Chicago Bears QB Bob Avellini Struggled After Retirement

Avellini transitioned to real estate after retirement, but being a broker came with its challenges as he filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony DUI in 2014, which was on the back of his sixth DUI arrest since 2002. The former Chicago Bears signal-caller said the injuries he suffered during his career were the cause of his drinking and depression. Still, he was pretty active when it came to charity events in the Chicago area and was hailed as a “supportive former teammate.” Our thoughts go out to Bob’s family, friends, and loved ones.
