— MIAMI — ESPN has received confirmation from a source that the Dolphins have reached an agreement with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. regarding the parameters of a contract. This announcement brings a veteran presence to a position group that is looking for a third option.
According to the source, the arrangement is for a period of one year and has incentives that have the potential to increase its maximum value to $8.25 million.
A meeting between Beckham and the Dolphins took place in March, but the two teams were unable to come to an agreement at that time. Before the NFL draft, general manager Chris Grier stated that there was “nothing imminent” regarding a deal with the three-time Pro Bowler. Despite the fact that the team selected two wide receivers in the selection, Grier did not minimize the chance of signing Beckham after the draft was over.
“We always look at opportunities and work through it,” Grier stated in his interview. We are always striving to add to the squad and make sure that we have the most competitive roster that we can in order to improve the club. As we have always spoken, competition is what allows for excellence to be cultivated. As for us, we will continue to look, as we have stated previously, after the draft, just like we have done in the past here. We will continue to look for folks and talk to them, and then we will see what happens.
At the wide receiver position, Beckham, who is 31 years old, joins a group that already has two stars in the form of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Within the competition for the third receiver position, which is currently held by Hill and Waddle, he will most likely face competition from Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft, Erik Ezukanma, and newcomers Malik Washington and Tahj Washington. Hill and Waddle are the only receivers who have recorded more than 32 catches or 417 yards since the hiring of coach Mike McDaniel in 2022. This is due to the fact that the majority of targets are directed toward the dynamic tandem that Miami possesses.
On the other hand, this does not mean that there is no possibility or desire for a third receiver to establish themselves. At the annual meeting of the league in March, McDaniel was questioned about the chance of coaching a player like Beckham, and he expressed his excitement about the prospect immediately.
“We did make him an offer, and business takes time, especially with players like Odell, who’s had a phenomenal career and still has really good football in front of him and has options,” McDaniel informed reporters. I believe that those conversations will continue for a long time. Let’s wait and see where they go. I do not live in a world where I can see into the future, and as a coach, I do not stray from my intended path. If we are able to reach a consensus, I will unquestionably be prepared to teach him, and I believe that both parties are making efforts to get toward that goal. We’ll have to wait and see what transpires.”
Even if his production has decreased over the years, Beckham continues to be one of the most well-known names in the National Football League. In each of the three seasons that he has played in, he has not been able to surpass 50 receptions or 600 receiving yards. This is due to the fact that injuries have had a significant impact on each of those seasons.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Beckham’s left knee was torn in 2020 while he was playing for the Cleveland Browns, which resulted in him missing the final nine games of the season. Following his release from the Browns in the middle of the 2021 season, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams and assisted them in reaching the Super Bowl. However, it was during this game that he suffered another injury to his left knee.
Following his decision to sit out the entirety of the 2022 season, Beckham signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens that was for $15 million. This agreement was one of the largest one-year payouts ever given to a wide receiver during the offseason of 2022. Although he concluded the season with statistics that were not very impressive, including 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns, his teammates praised his leadership and expertise with helping Baltimore to a league-best 13-4 record during the regular season.
Beckham made the following statement following the defeat of the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game to the Kansas City Chiefs: “If there is anything I felt about myself — regardless of anybody’s opinion or anything like that — is that I know that I can still play football, and I know that I still have s— in the tank.”
Beckham, who was selected by the New York Giants with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 draft, was selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons with the team. It is only three NFL players, including Justin Jefferson and Michael Thomas, who have accomplished the feat of recording at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards in the first three seasons of their careers. He is one of those three guys.
The incredible one-handed grab that Beckham made in November 2014, when he snagged the ball with his right hand extended in midair while sliding backward along the sideline, catapulted him to the forefront of the football football world almost immediately. In his nine seasons with the Giants, Browns, Rams, and Ravens, Beckham has amassed a total of 566 receptions, 7,932 yards, and 59 touchdowns among his receiving statistics.
It was NFL Network that broke the news that Beckham had reached an agreement with the Dolphins.
