Amid the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Washington’s unwavering commitment to his family and profound faith sets him apart as an anomaly. As a dedicated member of the Church of God in Christ, he has shared a marital bond with his wife Pauletta for nearly a quarter-century. When he speaks affectionately about their four children—John David, 23, Katia, 20, and twins Malcolm and Olivia, 16—it’s as though he’s a full-time stay-at-home dad.

Denzel Washington Admires Clint Eastwood’s Work

While frequently embodying virtuous characters, he took on the role of a malevolent figure in American Gangster. In a move that seemed to underline his adaptability, Denzel Washington assumed the roles of director and lead actor in The Great Debaters, which premiered on Christmas Day. The film, which revolves around a 1930s African American debate team and their inspiring coach (portrayed by none other than Washington), serves as a heartwarming narrative.

During an interview with Reader’s Digest, Denzel Washington was asked about his inspiration behind making the film The Great Debaters. Denzel Washington expressed his enjoyment in witnessing others succeed and his satisfaction in guiding young talents with his knowledge. He also emphasized his appreciation for collaboration and his forward-looking perspective. He cited Clint Eastwood as a source of inspiration, admiring Eastwood’s seamless transition between different career phases.

“I like seeing other people do well. I enjoy finding young kids and sharing what I know with them. I like the collaboration. Also, I’m looking down the line. Clint Eastwood is my hero. This guy just seamlessly segued from one career to another.”

When inquired about his reasons for creating the film, Washington highlighted its theme of the underdog, the small contender facing off against larger adversaries.

Denzel Washington Didn’t See Himself As A Leading Actor

“These are all categories. Leading man is something that someone calls you when you do press junkets. I’m not a leading man, I’m an actor, and so you get the part and interpret it.”
Exemplifying excellence as both an actor and director, Washington stands as a recipient of numerous prestigious awards and top billing, thanks to his remarkable on-screen portrayals. His impressive filmography includes timeless classics such as Glory, Malcolm X, Fences, Inside Man, and Crimson Tide.
