When discussing Wales rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit’s move to the Kansas City Chiefs, NFL legend Kelce said when he thought of Welsh people, he thought “posh”. After being quickly told how wrong he was on social media, the 36-year-old admitted to his error, saying he was “incredibly happy” to be wrong. McElhenney then offered to show the former Philadelphia Eagles center around, indicating a Wrexham game could be on the cards.
Kelce is one of the most popular NFL stars today due to both his epic career and his podcast, ‘New Heights’, alongside younger brother Travis (of Taylor Swift fame). McElhenney, on the other hand, is now transitioning from media to sport, having bought Wrexham in 2021 with fellow actor Ryan Reynolds and since leading them to League One with back-to-back promotions.
When told how misguided he was regarding Welsh people, Kelce wrote on X: “Yea, I’ve come to understand, I was very incorrect on this. Based on further assessment since these incorrect statements, not sure why I had these preconceptions in my mind, but I have found that the Welsh seem exactly like my kind of people. Happy to be incredibly wrong.”
McElhenney replied to him to say: “Yes, incredibly wrong. I should show you around someday. I might know a few people. See for yourself.”
McElhenney’s next few weeks are set to be spent basking in the joy of another promotion for his side and making early plans for the summer transfer window. Wrexham’s season ends with a home clash against Stockport County next weekend. As for Kelce, he is recently retired from the NFL, meaning he may have time to plan a trip to Wales and see how “posh” the people are for himself.
