Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid wants to give wide receiver Kadarius Toney another chance, even though he’s coming off of a disappointing season.
“Listen, I mean, Kadarius is arguably one of the most talented guys we have on the team. It’s just a matter of staying healthy and being able to stay on the field,” Reid said in a Monday news conference. “You always hear about the reliability, accountability, all those things that go into it. And so, I’m expecting him to come back ripping and ready to go.”
Toney isn’t attending the start of the team’s voluntary offseason program, but Reid added he’s in Texas training with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City fans should view this as a positive after the 25-year-old failed to become a difference-maker last season.
In 13 games, he had 27 receptions for 169 yards, one TD catch and a career-high five drops. Following a Week 15 loss to the New England Patriots — where he bobbled a pass that was intercepted — Toney didn’t play in another game and was a healthy scratch for Super Bowl LVIII.
In free agency, the Chiefs brought in some competition for Toney, signing former first-rounder Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year, $7M deal.
It wouldn’t be surprising if K.C. drafts another wideout in the first round. In their latest mock draft, ESPN’s Field Yates and Mel Kiper Jr. have the Chiefs taking South Carolina WR Xavier Legette with the 32nd overall pick.
Toney — who’s entering the final year of his rookie contract — must make the most of his second chance. Otherwise, the Chiefs will probably move on, and he could struggle to latch on with another team.
