Cardi B Explains the Key to Her and Snoop Dogg’s Marketability: ‘We Know How to Brand Ourselves’
Since her breakout with “Bodak Yellow” in 2017, Cardi B has collaborated with numerous brands, from McDonald’s to Uber Eats, Fashion Nova, and Reebok. However, her journey to securing these partnerships wasn’t without its challenges. Before becoming one of Hip Hop’s most prominent figures, she navigated her career as a reality star and influencer, earning less along the way.
In an Instagram Live session on Thursday evening, the New York native delved into what sets her apart in an industry where securing brand deals can be a strugglе for many artists. Cardi began by highlighting the disparities faced by artists of different skin tones, emphasizing that success in branding requires more than just talent. “A lot of artists, whether they’re light-skinned or dark-skinned, don’t land the brand deals I do,” she explained. “Why? Because many don’t know how to market themselves. They lack the savvy.”
Drawing from her own experiences, Cardi emphasized her background in hustling, including her time working in a strip club, as foundational to her understanding of money-making strategies. She drew parallels between herself and Snoop Dogg, noting how despite his gangster rapper image, he has become a global icon. “We know how to brand ourselves. We know how to make money. We know how to adapt,” she asserted.
Reflecting on her journey, Cardi admitted that success didn’t come easily, especially when she was seen primarily as an influencer rather than a serious artist. However, as she gained credibility in the music industry, opportunities began to open up for her. In February, she collaborated with NYX Cosmetics for their Duck Plump campaign, marking her first Suρer Bowl commercial and partnership with the brand.
On the music front, Cardi released tracks like “Like What (Freestyle)” and “Enough (Miami)” in March, in addition to featuring on songs by Shakira and Flo Milli. Despite the challenges she’s faced, Cardi’s resilience and business acumen continue to drive her success in both the music and branding spheres.
