Tyreek Hill’s departure from the Kansas City Chiefs was an event of huge importance at the time. Nobody could quite believe that the Chiefs were getting rid of Patrick Mahomes’ best receiver.
Many thought there had to have been some kind of problem behind the scenes, and some even speculated that Hill’s departure could spell the end of the Chiefs’ excellent on-field success to that point.
What surprised even more people was his choice of destination, the Miami Dolphins. Known throughout the NFL as one of the league’s worst teams of the current millennium, many felt Hill was merely signing with the Miami franchise for money.
However, a few short years later and it’s clear that Miami had a plan in trading for Tyreek Hill and they now boast one of the most exciting offenses in all of football.
How did Hill end up in Miami?
On The Dive Bar Podcast, Hill revealed the emotional rollercoaster of the trade talks.
While many thought he wanted the security of being the highest-paid receiver, it turns out his childhood fandom played a significant role.
“You can even ask my friends, whenever we played Madden, I used to trade myself to the Dolphins off the Chiefs,” Hill declared to the Dive Bar Podcast.
Initially, Hill was open to staying with the Chiefs.
“We had our conversations about ‘oh, we’re gonna try to bring you back’,” he revealed.
However, when Miami made a massive offer, Hill couldn’t pass up the chance to become the league’s highest-paid receiver.
“I had no choice; you know what I’m saying,” the 30-year-old admitted.
Despite some fans questioning Hill’s move from Patrick Mahomes’ precision throws to Tua Tagovailoa’s developing arm, Hill has thrived with the Dolphins, posting career-best stats.
“The rest is history,” he explained.
“Everything happens for a reason.”

What made the Chiefs agree to trade Hill?
On his new podcast, It Needed To Be Said, Hill revealed that he tried everything to stay with the Chiefs, even suggesting a contract well below his eventual deal with Miami.
“I ain’t even gotta be the highest-paid, for real,” Hill explained.
“I just wanted a realistic position for me and my family.”
Hill was looking for a contract averaging 25-26 million dollars annually, but the Chiefs’ offer wasn’t close in guaranteed money.
Despite head coach Andy Reid expressing his love for Hill, the Chiefs couldn’t match his financial expectations. The Chiefs opted to trade Hill for draft picks to strengthen their roster, while Hill signed for Miami on a four-year, $120 million deal with $72.2 million of that guaranteed.
