Our CBS Sports’ staff voted to see where K.C.’s trio now stand in terms of football immortality

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid are among the five or 10 greatest of all-time at their respective positions and they are once again threatening to add to their legacies with another possible Super Bowl run.

Last year, after the Chiefs’ thrilling 38-35 Super Bowl LVII win over the Eagles, I asked our staff to vote on where the trio ranks right now. Not what their trajectory is, but if they retire today, where do they stand? (The voters: Doug Clawson, Garrett Podell, Brett Anderson, Bryan DeArdo, Kevin Steimle, Jared Dubin, Zach Pereles, Jordan Dajani and Kyle Stackpole)

Their place in the games history did not change as a result of the 2023 regular season but they are once again on the doorstep of moving up in those conversations.

Here’s a look at last year’s vote and what’s at stake the rest of this postseason:

According to our group of voters, Mahomes is on the Mount Rushmore of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He was voted as high as second and as low as 11th, and the consensus has him as the fourth-greatest quarterback of all-time between Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers. No surprise at the top, Tom Brady is the consensus GOAT, getting all nine first-place votes.

Case Mahomes should be higher

Mahomes has done something that no other player in the history of the NFL has done. Not even Brady, Manning or Montana — the three QBs ahead of him on this list. He has won two league MVPs and two Super Bowl MVPs in a five-season span. Now, there’s no way Mahomes has surpassed Brady as the GOAT, but you could argue his playoff resume is already more impressive than Manning’s (14-13 playoff record, two Super Bowls, one Super Bowl MVP) and his regular-season credentials are catching up to Montana’s, who is largely third here thanks to a perfect 4-0 record in the Super Bowl. Mahomes can make plays that no QB in the top three can make, and has a strong case for being the most talented quarterback of all time. It’ll be tough to move past Peyton Manning or Joe Montana with a Super Bowl win this year, but you could at least have the argument. And, he’s still on a trajectory to threaten Brady as the greatest of all-time

Case Mahomes should be lower

He’s only been a full-time starter for six years, so is he really already a top-five quarterback? Aaron Rodgers might have something to say about that. Yes, Mahomes already has more rings and more conference championship trips than Rodgers does, but Rodgers also has four league MVPs, including back-to-back at ages 37 and 38. He belongs in the “most talented QB ever” discussion and has been doing it for much longer than Mahomes, as his 475 career touchdown passes suggest (Mahomes has 219). Johnny Unitas would also like a word. He has one more league MVP and championship (three of each) than Mahomes, was the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdown passes and yards when he retired, and practically invented the two-minute drill with his clutch play in the 1958 NFL Championship Game known as “the greatest game ever played.”

Case Kelce should be higher

It’s a tough sell that Kelce should be No. 1 here, Tony Gonzalez has both the prime and longevity that surpasses Kelce. Gonzalez led all tight ends in receiving yards in a season, seven times, to Kelce’s four. He has the sixth-most receiving yards (15,127) in NFL history (regardless of position). Kelce may surpass Tony G one day, but his best case may be ahead of Rob Gronkowski at No. 2. Kelce already has more career receiving yards than Gronk, and only Jerry Rice has more catches, receiving yards and touchdown grabs than Kelce in a playoff career. Kelce is the only tight end to lead a Super Bowl-winning team in receiving yards twice (he led the Chiefs in 2019 and 2022) and has had a ridiculous stretch of playoff games over the last few postseasons.

Kelce has the same number of 1,000-yard seasons in his 30s as Gronk had in his career (four). The reason he doesn’t surpass Gronk in some people’s minds is due to Gronk’s sheer all-around dominance. He has the same number of first-team All-Pro selections as Kelce (four), has led all tight ends in receiving yards as many times as Kelce (four seasons), and is one of the best red zone threats in league history. When Gronk initially retired after the 2018 season, he had the third-most touchdown catches of any player before turning 30 in NFL history beyond only Randy Moss and Jerry Rice. He has 18 more career touchdowns than Kelce and is widely considered a better blocker. He also has more rings than Kelce. It’ll be interesting to see how productive Kelce is in the coming years and if he can eventually threaten Tony Gonzalez. This is the first year where it looked like Kelce was on the downside of his career in terms of health and production.

Case Kelce should be lower

Kelce’s career numbers are nearly identical to Shannon Sharpe’s in terms of Pro Bowl selections (nine vs. eight), first-team All-Pro selections (both four), receiving yards (both over 10K) and touchdown catches (Kelce 74 vs. Sharpe 62). Sharpe last played two decades ago when the NFL was hardly a passing league. He also won two championships with the Broncos and one with the Ravens, so a case could be made that he belongs ahead of Kelce. Another Super Bowl title for Kelce could squash that.

Reid is the seventh-best head coach in NFL history, per our panel of nine voters. He was in the top 10 for every voter, and even as high as third. Like Brady at quarterback, Belichick was the unanimous No. 1, garnering all nine first-place votes.

Case Reid should be higher

He is the only head coach in NFL history to hold the wins record for multiple franchises, proving even this run with one of the greatest QBs of all time (Mahomes) is no fluke, and Reid deserves his share of the credit. He made four straight NFC title games with the Eagles and has now made six straight AFC title games with the Chiefs, including two Super Bowl wins. He has the fourth-most regular-season wins in NFL history (258) and is considered one of the greatest offensive minds the league has ever seen (as Super Bowl LVII once again proved). He also has a very successful coaching tree (unlike Belichick) that features John Harbaugh, Doug Pederson, Sean McDermott and Ron Rivera, among others. He will be in the top five discussion with another title. George Halas, who we ranked sixth, won 318 games and six titles, but last coached in 1955 when there were 12 teams in the NFL. Reid also has 65 more regular-season wins than longtime Steelers coach Chuck Noll, who is fifth here.

Case Reid should be lower

Reid has zero Super Bowls and a losing playoff record (11-12) without Patrick Mahomes. However, by this logic, how is Bill Belichick the greatest coach ever? If there’s any reason Reid is lower, it has more to do with the coaches he is ranked ahead of. Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls with Washington in the 80s, Tom Landry coached the Cowboys dynasty in the 70s and Bill Parcells coached two Super Bowl champions and has perhaps the best coaching tree of all time.

There you have it. Mahomes, Kelce and Reid are all firmly in the top 10 of all time and all borderline top five. Their legacies have made a big leap in the last year or so and can threaten the Mount Rushmore of their positions with another title. If this postseason is anything like the past ones, the difference between a Super Bowl and an early exit will be decided by the thinnest of margins. Last year, the Chiefs won the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl on Harrison Butker field goals in the final 10 seconds following controversial (but correct) penalties.

She has previoυsly said that she plans to spend Valentine’s Day with her friends.

Taylor recently teaмed υp with Aмerican Greetings to create a range of cards, gift packaging and stationary.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid saw the photos of his wife Tammy with a shirtless Jason Kelce at the Chiefs-Bills divisional round game on Sunday.

Reid explained that his wife ran into the Eagles center at Arrowhead Stadium, where he stole the spotlight while cheering shirtless in Travis’ star-studded suite.

“Yeah my wife saw him,” Reid said in an interview with Sports Radio 810 on Monday. “She took pictures with him. I saw the pictures.

“No shirt on, no. Listen, he’s the best. He’s a great kid — great father.

“That’s probably the thing I’m most proud of him for. He’s got a great wife [Kylie Kelce] and kids [daughters Wyatt, Elliotte and Bennett] and everything, so he’s done a nice job with that.”

Reid, who tied the knot with Tammy in 1981, did not share the photo of his wife and Jason at the game.

The coach also did not say where exactly the snap was taken.

Taking to his X account, Jason posted a screenshot of a text message from his mother, Donna Kelce, who was also at the game, sharing what his daughter said about his shirtless moment.

“Ellie said ‘Dads boobs are showing!’” the message read.

Jason went viral when CBS cameras captured him screaming and cheering with just a pair of sweatpants and a beanie hat on while in his little brother’s suite — where Travis’ girlfriend, Taylor Swift, was present.

Kylie was also seen chatting with the singer, who’s currently on a break from her “Eras” tour, which picks back up in February.

Reid has history with the Kelce family beyond Travis, who he’s coached his entire career.

The 65-year-old Reid previously served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles for the first two years of Jason’s career in 2011-12.

The Eagles fired Reid after a 4-12 season in 2012, and he was hired as the Chiefs’ head coach the next January — a few months before Kansas City selected Travis in the third round (63rd overall) of the 2013 NFL draft.

Jason had a lot to celebrate as Travis and the Chiefs punched their ticket to the AFC Championship for the sixth consecutive year after a 27-24 win against the Bills on Sunday.

Travis Kelce’s latest outfit appears to be a very Taylor Swift-coded look.

After landing in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s Chiefs-Bills game, the NFL player was spotted wearing a look resembling one that his girlfriend wore in her “Anti-Hero” music video.

Kelce, 34, arrived to the city in a mustard yellow suit and a multicolored striped turtleneck, immediately reminding people of the yellow pants and striped top that Swift, 34, sported in her 2022 music video.

The tight end accessorized with a cranberry-colored beanie and aviator shades.

 

Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, poked fun at his sibling’s latest fashion moment, sharing a clip on X (formerly Twitter) of Travis walking across the airport tarmac. “Looks like he’s auditioning for a new Wes Anderson film,” he quipped in the caption.

On Sunday, it appears Travis repeated the look on game day.

In her “Anti-Hero” video — during the 1:19 to 1:52 segment — Swift wears a striped collared shirt and yellow pants. The shirt in question is not the one seen in the music video’s thumbnail.

At the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4, Swift’s “Anti-Hero” is a contender for song of the year, record of the year and best pop solo performance.

“Anti-Hero” is from the 2022 album Midnights, which is nominated for album of the year and best pop vocal album.

Swift, with a total of six Grammy nods, is also vying for best pop duo/group performance for her “Karma” collaboration with Ice Spice.

If Swift scoops up album of the year, she will be the first artist to win the honor four times, following her wins for folklore in 2021, 1989 in 2016 and Fearless in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs have won seven games and lost only three games with Swift in attendance.

If Kelce and the Chiefs defeat the Bills on Sunday, they’ll clinch a spot in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs are hoping to reach the Super Bowl on Feb. 11 to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

Another reason for Eagles fans to root for Detroit.

Hey, remember when Zach Ertz got waived by the Arizona Cardinals in late November and never signed with another team?

Well, he’s a free agent no longer after signing with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. The plan is for him to be elevated for their NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

The Lions have a pretty great rookie tight end in Sam LaPorta. But he’s been playing through an injury. And Detroit’s backup tight end, Brock Wright, only had 91 receiving yards in the regular season. UPDATE: Wright got hurt in the Lions’ Divisional Round win, further prompting the need for Ertz.

Adding Ertz to the mix gives standout offensive coordinator Ben Johnson another chain-moving target to work with. He obviously doesn’t figure to be a featured player as much as he might contribute a couple of catches.

As if rooting against the 49ers this weekend wasn’t already easy enough, rooting for the Lions just got even easier. The Lions are two wins away from Zach Ertz getting his second career Super Bowl ring.

In case you missed it, Ertz scored the Eagles’ game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl LII.

Travis isп’t exaggeratiпg. A former high school basketball star from Clevelaпd, the yoυпger Kelce brother received Divisioп I hoops scholarship offers before committiпg to play football for the Bearcats.

‘West Virgiпia is where I waпted to play basketball,’ Kelce said iп December, revealiпg that he пearly accepted a scholarship to play for пow-former Moυпtaiпeers coach Bob Hυggiпs, who coiпcideпtally previoυsly coached at Ciпciппati.

Ella’s mother claims she did not know that Taylor would be attending the gam

jason Kelce was all over the news for his antics during the Chiefs vs Bills game on Sunday, including lifting 8-year-old Ella Piazza who is a huge fan of Taylor Swift so she could share some love with the pop star.

After Jason Kelce celebrated Travis Kelce’s touchdown by taking off his shirt, he picked up young Ella who was holding an “I love Taylor Swift” sign so the Eras Tour singer could see the girl and say hello. Her mother, Jessica Piazza spoke with the Today show to give the details about what happened.

Jessica Piazza, a long-time Bills fan was interviewed and mentioned “I had no idea how viral it was until I woke up at 6 a.m. this morning to a thousand texts from friends who saw it first on Barstool Sports and then everywhere!”

In the video below you can see how Kelce lifted the little girl who was very happy to meet Taylor and say hello. Jessica commented that it was Ella’s first football game, and is not “totally aware yet” of what happened

“Ella worked so hard on that sign. And the week prior she was telling all her friends at school that she was going to meet Taylor Swift at the game,” Piazza said. “I knew where we were sitting – and it was clear across the stadium from where the Kelces were probably sitting. But I didn’t want to say anything.”

Ella’s mother claims she did not know that Taylor would be attending the game and would be in the box closest to her.

“It was halftime and a lot of people had left their seats to go to the bathroom or get a drink or whatever, and so we just tried climbing up higher and higher. It was really Ella who was forging the path,” Jessica mentioned.

Jessica thought mistook Jason Kelce for Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Bills’ former QB who made a habit of taking off his shirt, however, she later recognized Kelce and let Ella go with him.

Jessica also elaborated on what happened when Ella saw Taylor “She waved back and smiled, And Ella was in absolute heaven. She still probably doesn’t realize what a big star Jason Kelce also is. She just couldn’t believe she saw Taylor! The rest of the game she was on cloud nine.”

Swift’s eпthυsiasm at her first Chiefs game seemed to coпfirm her rυmored romaпce with Kelce.

Swift later said they were already aп official coυple before she watched the Chiefs beat the Chicago Bears.

“This all started wheп Travis very adorably pυt me oп blast oп his podcast, which I thoυght was metal as hell,” she told Time. “We started haпgiпg oυt right after that. So we actυally had a sigпificaпt amoυпt of time that пo oпe kпew, which I’m gratefυl for, becaυse we got to get to kпow each other.”

“We’ve had hυпdreds of orders over the last 48 hoυrs,” Harriпgtoп told BI. “Sometimes oυr oпliпe store lights υp after a Chiefs game wheп we wiп, bυt this is 100 times more thaп that, aпd we lost the game. It was the Taylor effect.”

That same day, the Chiefs owпer praised Swift aпd Kelce’s “pυrely orgaпic” relatioпship.

Taylor Swift continued her trend of tipping stadium workers in $100 bills over the weekend.

A ticket taker at Highmark Stadium, where Swift watched her boyfriend Travis Kelce lead the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the Buffalo Bills Sunday, recalled her sweet interaction with the “Love Story” singer.

“She’s a sweetie pie. Very down to earth,” Jerris Rainey told 7 News Buffalo Monday night.

“I just wanted to just see her, and she you know she stopped, and she asked me if I worked at the stadium,” she recalled.

“I said yes, and she asked if she could give me a tip. She gave me $100 and then she asked if I wanted to take a picture with her and I said yes.”

The pair posed for a selfie together, which showed Rainey beaming from ear to ear as Swift came in close to her face.

The “Cruel Summer” songstress, who started dating the NFL player last summer, has made a habit of tipping stadium employees very generously.

Last month, after traveling to Massachusetts to watch Kelce, 34, play at Gillette Stadium, Swift was seen handing several large bills to a staff member in the kitchen.

She bundled up in a red beanie and a $1,800 Gant Blank Canvas Project x Kilo Kish Bouclé Varsity Jacket, while watching the game with Travis’ brother Jason Kelce, who ripped his shirt off while celebrating a touchdown.

They were also joined by Jason’s wife, Kylie, his parents, Donna and Ed Kelce, Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, and Swift’s pal, Cara Delevingne.

Fans were quick to point out it was Swift’s first public outing with Jason and Kylie since she started dating Travis last year.

Despite the high stakes of the playoff game, the two time Super Bowl champ still made sure to blow a kiss in his girlfriend’s direction and even flashed her signature heart gesture after scoring a touchdown.
