The Celtics will be without their top six players for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Wizards at TD Garden.

On Saturday afternoon, Boston announced that six players would be out due to injuries, including Jaylen Brown (rest), Jayson Tatum (rest), Jrue Holiday (left patella tendinopathy), Al Horford (rest), Kristaps Porzingis (rest), and Derrick White (left ankle sprain).

It will be the second consecutive game that the whole starting lineup will miss as the team takes precautions with its core heading into the postseason.

Boston’s backups dominated the Hornets on Friday night, with Payton Pritchard setting a career high in the win. Boston still has nothing to play for in the standings in Game 82 after winning homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs last month.

With six players out, Boston will look further down the depth chart for playing time.

Four players (Jordan Walsh, Neemias Queta, Drew Peterson, and Pritchard) set career highs in points against the Hornets on Friday night, and they should have plenty of opportunities to do the same against the Wizards.

These two-way players, along with Walsh, will represent Maine in the G-League Finals on Monday night.

Boston’s regulars will also be watching the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon, as there are a number of key games going place across the Eastern Conference that will determine the Celtics’ likely first round opponent.

There are still six teams who might enter the play-in round and earn the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics and Wizards will face off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at TD Garden.

Lessons from the Celtics vs. Wizards: Pritchard and the C’s overwhelm Mike Gorman Day made his debut on NBC Sports Boston.

The Boston Celtics defeated the Washington Wizards in a commanding fashion in their regular-season finale at TD Garden to honor Mike Gorman.

Gorman, who has been the C’s play-by-play man for the past 43 years, received recognition during the penultimate regular-season game of his illustrious career. The Celtics hosted a moving halftime ceremony that had multiple touching moments, and they also screened a tribute video on the jumbotron.

Regarding the actual game, while the players rested in preparation for the postseason, Boston’s reserves once again took center stage. Alongside Luke Kornet, Sam Hauser, Svi Mykhailiuk, and Payton Pritchard, rookie Jordan Walsh started his first NBA game.

Following his outstanding performance in Friday’s victory over Charlotte, Pritchard gave an encore. For the second straight game, he scored 38 points, dished out 12 assists, and pulled down nine rebounds, setting a career high. With 26 and 19 points, respectively, Mykhailiuk and big man Neemias Queta both had outstanding performances. The Celtics won 132-122, with a lead of up to 24 points.

With a 64-18 record at the end of the 2023–24 regular season, Boston achieved their best result since going 66–16 in the 2007–08 championship campaign. Friday, following the play-in round, it will find out who its first-round playoff opponent is.

Here are three things to remember from Sunday before we start thinking about the postseason:

It’s “Pro-Am P” once more.

One of Pritchard’s many monikers, “Pro-Am P,” came about as a result of his penchant for blowing up the box score in Pro-Am contests. In 2021, he scored 92 points. Over the past two games, he has led the Celtics’ starting lineup while playing in “Pro-Am” mode.

He eclipsed his 32-point scoring burst against Charlotte with a new career-high 38-point showing against the Wizards. He was an explosive 15 of 21 from the field, with 4 of 6 coming from deep.

Pritchard had six assists and 22 points at the half. Dick Lipe, the Celtics’ statistical expert, states that Pritchard is just one of seven players from the C’s who had at least 20 points and six assists in the first half throughout the play-by-play era. He completed the feat in two consecutive games, making him the only Celtic to do so twice.

In the postseason, Pritchard will play more of a supporting role, but there’s no denying that he will have his moments to shine as Boston pursues Banner 18. He deserves this chance.

Mike Gorman receives a fitting farewell

At his farewell regular-season game, the adored broadcaster honored 43 years of greatness.

A video homage to Gorman was shown by the C’s on the TD Garden Jumbotron early in the game. A standing ovation was given by the audience, and Gorman reacted deeply to the show of affection.

For the past 43 years, the Celtics have honored Gorman’s contributions to broadcasting with a special halftime ceremony. In front of the Garden crowd, Gorman concluded with a parting message for the C’s as they prepare for their postseason run.

“I just want to tell the team to go win this thing.”

LeBron James reveals his honest thoughts on the 2023-24 season.

It’s the end of the road for the Lakers this season and while their journey will continue in the playoffs, LeBron took a minute to reflect on the last 82 games. Contrary to the feeling of many Lakers fans, James said the season was pretty good overall given everything that happened.

“For everything we went through, it’s a pretty good season for us,” said James.

From coaching rumors to constant trade scenarios, the Lakers had to endure a lot of distractions and they fared pretty well given how stacked the West is. If nothing else, the Lakers proved that they aren’t far away from being a contender and the feeling is that they can make a deep playoff run if circumstances fall their way.

Even so, after last year’s impressive playoff run, fans came in expecting an even better team for this campaign. Instead, it was more mediocrity from the Purple and Gold and it landed them here, with an uphill climb to the Finals.

Despite the good health of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers couldn’t finish above 8th in the West, and it will surely make a difference in how far they’re able to go.

Along with being in the ultra-talented West, the Lakers have operated in a state of flux all season thanks to countless injuries. Over past few months alone, several role-players have come in and out of shooting slumps and the Lakers themselves experienced a nasty losing streak in the not-too-distant-past.

Through it all, the Lakers have managed to take care of business and win just enough games to give them a realistic path to the title. Only time will tell how it plays out but their path has finally been revealed and they know just what to expect.

Lakers Vs. Pelicans In Crucial West Play-In Game

The Lakers narrowly avoided sliding to 9th in the standings, and it may just save their season. Instead of winning two play-in games on the road, they only need to win once to advance and secure their spot in the first round.

If the Lakers win the game, they will finish 7th and face the Denver Nuggets in round one, or they could split the tournament and slide to 8th for a matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Or, in the worst-case scenario, they could lose both games and fall out of the playoff entirely.

With so much at stake, the pressure has never been higher for the Lakers to take care of business, especially since this is one of LeBron’s final seasons. If they don’t win now, or at least come close, it will not paint a good picture of the future of the LeBron James era.

But first, they must focus on the battle in front of them, which just so happens to be the same team they played today. It will take a disciplined effort to contain Zion Williamson and the Pelicans, but winning this game is important for preserving the stars and sending a message that the Lakers are still a team to fear in the Western Conference.

If tonight’s match was a sign of anything, the Pelicans should be very worried about the battle to come and their very reputation is riding on how they perform in this post-season.
