Friday evening marked the conclusion of the Los Angeles Lakers’ inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament journey as they faced the Phoenix Suns.

Achieving their first victory of the year, the Lakers defeated the Suns 122-119, with the return of Anthony Davis into the lineup following a one-game absence. The victory undoubtedly maintains the Lakers’ chances of winning Group A with three games remaining.

Cam Reddish was substituted for Austin Reaves in an effort to provide the Lakers with a more substantial lineup, as decided by Darvin Ham. Reddish achieved an early success as he stole the ball and subsequently made a corner three-pointer. A 13-7 lead early in the game was sufficient to justify the Lakers’ personnel adjustment, considering their sluggish start.

Bradley Beal helped Phoenix maintain a fight in its second game following his return from a back injury and went off to a hot start. The Lakers’ early lead was abruptly erased when Kevin Durant started executing a three-point play.

 

The Suns gained momentum and extended their lead to double digits for the first time, causing the Lakers to struggle offensively and lose their energy level in the process.

After LeBron James appeared to have initially injured his leg, Los Angeles eventually trailed 34-25 entering the second quarter. He was eventually able to return, and his playmaking, along with that of Austin Reaves, helped the Lakers regain momentum.

Nevertheless, the Suns maintained a double-digit lead despite the Lakers’ inability to prevent offensive glass turnovers, a pattern that has persisted throughout the season.

In the first half, aside from a few attempts from Taurean Prince and D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers were apathetic. Consequently, Los Angeles entered the intermission locker room trailing 63-55 following a Beal layup at the buzzer, as James entered an offensive trance to close the second quarter.

 

Jusuf Nurkic responded with five consecutive points, narrowing the deficit to four points, after Davis opened the third quarter with a quick bucket. James then made a brace at the line to regain the lead.

Following that, LeBron James became extremely effective with consecutive three-pointers, exerting every effort to keep the Lakers within striking distance. Russell, who assisted teammates such as Davis in converting easy baskets, maintained his impressive evening.

Durant drilled consecutive three-pointers and a three-point play to extend the Phoenix lead to double digits just as it appeared that the Lakers were gaining ground. Reddish’s 3-pointer after the buzzer thankfully dropped the Lakers into the fourth quarter trailing 96-79.

James assisted Reddish in making a transition layup for Rui Hachimura, and the Lakers inexplicably took the lead for the first time since the first quarter when he assisted Reaves on a transition three-pointer.

Reddish added a third-and-final point after a Suns timeout, and Eric Gordon completed the run with a floater. The Lakers’ lead was increased to five with the assistance of Christian Wood’s third triple, which compelled Frank Vogel to call another timeout.

With some crucial buckets, Durant assisted the Suns in regaining momentum and preserving a thrilling conclusion to the game.

Reddish converted an additional colossal corner triple with one minute remaining to give his team a 118-113 lead over the Lakers, who labored to contain Durant in the midrange.

Prince then completed a layup to put the game on ice after the Lakers obtained the necessary stop.

Of all the stories written about Michael Jordan amid the release of The Last Dance documentary it’s a column written 36 years ago that’s perhaps the most interesting.

While everyone interviewed for ESPN’s record-breaking 10-part series is largely relying on their memory of what happened decades ago while recounting the legend of His Airness, this 1984 Chicago Tribune piece provides a real-time take.

It was written in the wake of the Bulls selecting Jordan with the third pick in the 1984 draft after the Houston Rockets took Hakeem Olajuwon first and the Portland Trail Blazers infamously called out Sam Bowie’s name second.

The Bulls may have been thrilled Jordan fell to third, but it was certainly muted excitement in the eyes of Bernie Lincicome, whose column carried the headline “Apologetic Bulls stuck with Jordan”.

Writing with a heavy dose of sarcasm, Lincicome was bemused the underachieving franchise wasn’t more enthusiastic when talking about a recruit he considered the “greatest natural basketball talent, inch for inch, in this young decade”.

Lincicome accused the Bulls of trying to “avoid Jordan” by seeking to trade the third pick for a centre.

His view was backed by comments from Bulls general manager Rod Thorn, who is hailed for drafting Jordan but said at the time: “We wish he were 7 feet but he isn’t. There just wasn’t a centre available. What can you do?”

It was no secret Olajuwon was the most sought after player in the draft after his exceptional college career in Houston, so Thorn wasn’t speaking out of turn when he said: “If we had our choice between Bowie and Jordan we would still have taken Jordan. But Olajuwon was the big prize.”

And Thorn may have been attempting to limit the weight of expectation ready to be placed on the North Carolina star’s shoulders when he added: “Jordan isn’t going to turn this franchise around. I wouldn’t ask him to.”

But it’s hard to forgive this assessment of Jordan’s scoring ability. “He’s a very good offensive player,” Thorn said. “But not an overpowering offensive player.”

Keith Brown, who worked in ticketing for the Bulls and represented them at the draft in New York, told NBA.com this week the team’s fanbase wanted a big man.

“At the time, it was a centre dominated league,” Brown said. “What we heard every single day in the office from season ticket holders and fans: ‘You’ve got to get a centre.’ There were a lot of people at the time who wanted Sam Perkins (picked fourth) or Mel Turpin (picked sixth). There was never anyone in the Bulls organisation lobbing for anyone but Jordan. But certainly outside the organisation they wanted us to draft a centre.”

It took Jordan all of one practice to let the Bulls see exactly what they had.

“When (training) camp started we were in the conference room having lunch the first or second day of practice at Angel Guardian gym,” Brown said. “It’s around noon and (coach) Kevin Loughery comes walking in. Rod Thorn looks down at his watch and asks him what he’s doing there. He knows the team is practising. Kevin says, ‘I had to cut practice short.’ Rod says, ‘What do you mean?’

“Kevin Loughery says, ‘That kid Jordan, every single trip down the floor he steals the ball on defence. And every trip on offence he dunks the ball. He was demoralising the team. So I had to cut practice short.’”

Mary Lou Carey of Upper Darby, who worked as a teacher’s aide at Bywood Elementary School until her retirement in 2014, was a huge fan of Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, referring to him as her “young boyfriend,” said her daughter, Jill Carey.

They put the word out on Facebook and soon Carey’s jersey found its way to Kelce’s Haverford home, where he signed it.

When Mary Lou found out that Jason Kelce had signed her jersey, she said “For me?” Then she smiled.

The family received the signed jersey back in time for the Monday funeral, bringing joy on an otherwise dark day.

“He’s all about the fans and the community. He goes the extra mile, and that’s why everyone loves him,” Jill Carey said.

Patrick Mahomes is a patient man who has spent years refining his magnificent family house. He currently resides in this home with his wife Brittany and their two adorable children, a daughter named Sterling Skye who is two years old and a son named Patrick ‘Bronze’ Lavon Mahomes III who is one year old.

The quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, who is 28 years old and will play the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl on Sunday, and his family have finally moved into their spacious mansion in Belton, Missouri. This move comes about three years after they purchased an eight-acre parcel of land in 2020 for a rumored price of $400,000.

In addition to the family pool, the spectacular home features a private pond, a par-3 golf hole, and a football field that is fifty yards in length and features Patrick’s emblem in the middle as well as the word “Mahomes” printed across the end zone.

Patrick is building himself a multi-million-dollar real estate empire, which isn’t surprising considering he signed a ten-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in August 2020.

In 2017, the couple made their first purchase, which was a condo in Kansas City that cost $350,000 and featured two bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a top roof deck. It was the only apartment in the building that featured a two-car garage and a top roof deck.

The year 2019 saw them spend $1.8 million on a ranch house that had been remodeled and featured three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and was located in Kansas City. After that, Steve and Brittany invested an additional $400,000 in repairs, and they have recently put the property up for sale at a price of $2.9 million.

In their previous residence, there is a total of nearly 4,800 square feet of space, which includes a master bedroom that is 1,250 square feet in layout. There is also a home gym, a pool, a hot tub, and a putting green outdoors. Additionally, there is a chef’s kitchen, a wine room with 500 bottles, and a pool.

Prior to the completion of their new pad, Patrick and Brittany was living in the most luxurious property they had ever owned in Texas. The property, which includes four bedrooms and seven bathrooms, has been referred to as a “entertainer’s dream.”

One of the features is a wine cellar, in addition to a floating staircase and a huge kitchen that has seats for twelve people during breakfast. In addition, there is a private study that may be accessed by a private loft.

The primary bedroom features a dressing space, a spa bath with an infinity edge tub, and a walk-through shower. Additionally, the main bedroom comes with panoramic views out the window. Michael Jordan has added a rare Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster — claimed to be “the world’s fastest and most powerful convertible” with a top speed of 300 mph and a price tag of $3.5 million — to his collection of vehicles.

 

And as an athlete that always strived to be the best and is known for his competitive spirit, it seems to suit Jordan, who is now one of only 30 people to own the supercar, according to Robb Report, as the company limits its production.

“Today was a special day,” the Hennessey Performance account wrote along with a photo of company CEO John Hennessey with Jordan and his new ride outside the Hall of Famer’s private golf club in Florida, Grove XXIII. “Such an honor to build a special Venom F5 for a special friend.”

The image doesn’t show much of the Venom F5 Roadster, which debuted over a year ago, but from what can be seen, it has a glossy carbon-fiber body detailed with yellow pinstripes.

Production of the Venom F5 began in late 2022 and there are just 24 examples were made of the coupe, making the convertible not as rare.

With increased production comes increased price, tagging the Venom F5 Roadster at $3 million to start compared to the $2.1 million coupe.

That’s not exactly a dent in the wallet of Jordan, who’s net worth is valued at $2 billion, according to Forbes.

Jordan, currently considering a $1.7 billion sale of the Charlotte Hornets, made a reported $256 million last year in his licensing deal with Nike, according to Front Office Sports, with his Jordan Brand making $5.1 billion in revenue.

He also co-owns the 23XI NASCAR team with racers Bubba Watson and Tyler Reddick on his roster.

 

The car’s price tag is understandable from a peek at the spec sheet:

The Venom F5 holds a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 engine, producing 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 pound-feet of torque, which courses through a seven-speed, single-clutch semi-automatic transmission.

The roadster has many similarities to the coupe, specifically at the front, but the differences start at the cabin where a removable carbon-fiber roof panel lays at just 18 pounds.

The lack of a roof increases its curb weight but not by much, scaling at 3,100 pounds while the regular F5 sits at 2,998 pounds.

New tempered glass, which is made of a material that can withstand temperature over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, is also sported at the back to give a look at the potent engine behind the passenger compartment.

The Jason Kelce head shake became the tell-tale sign for when the Eagles’ offensive game plan was unlikely to work last season.

Or at least that’s how Lane Johnson saw it.

“Any time Kelce would get mad during the week, early in the week, or if he didn’t agree with the game plan, most time we’re not going to win the game,” Johnson said. “It was that way my whole career. Any time we would have a game and he would do the head shaking during early in the week … he knew stuff wasn’t going to work.

“He could tell.”

Kelce had significant influence on Eagles coaches by his 13th NFL season. But as the team plummeted in the final two months — in what would be the last season for the All-Pro center — there was little even he could do to stop the inevitable.

“Once the ship got punctured,” Johnson said recently, “it [bleeping] went down.”

Several months earlier in training camp, the Eagles were brimming with hope. And having Kelce return for yet another go-around — after his annual retirement consternation — would be paramount if they wanted to get back to the Super Bowl and this time win.

unCovering the Birds, The Inquirer’s Eagles podcast, was there to chronicle it all as the future Hall of Famer played his final games in midnight green — from the highs of the first two months when Kelce saw through a near-perfect record to the late-season lows when coach Nick Sirianni’s team imploded.

“If there’s something that I don’t believe is good, or I think is wrong, I’m going to tell people,” Kelce said at one point during the season. “I’m not always right. … When I believe something, I’m gonna voice my opinion. And there’s gonna be times where the coach agrees or disagrees with me.”

The opening episodes for Season 3 of the pod, titled “Kelce’s Last Stand, Parts 1 and 2,” take listeners inside the veteran offensive lineman’s last journey, from the locker room at NovaCare Complex to off-field events like the premiere of his documentary film and his Super Bowl LVIII party in Las Vegas.

Through it all, and with a sharp focus the access provided, it became increasingly clear that Kelce was preparing for life after football. He had already set the wheels in motion and initially wanted his doc to be about the transition a professional football player makes into retirement.

Kelce had been pondering the idea for years and had built an identity away from the gridiron with various enterprises, none more successful than New Heights, the podcast he started with his brother, Travis, in 2022.

The chemistry between the brothers made the show immediately popular, but it exploded when Travis, a Kansas City Chiefs tight end, started dating music star Taylor Swift. Jason might not have been attracting the same attention, but his marketability increased, as well.

The off-field demands of business and family life, and the opportunities that retirement would provide, suggested that his end days were nearing. But nothing spoke more to that than his aching flesh and bones.

“I’m banged up, but I’m always banged up by the end of it,” Kelce said in January after what would be his final practice. “You’re wore out — your knees, your ankles, your joints. Especially the older you are, the more you feel all that stuff.”

Kelce had been open about the physical toll of the game before. But he hardly ever told the full story of how he managed to play in 167 consecutive games, including playoffs, over the last decade. Johnson, who came to refer to his long-time teammate as Tin Man, and others with the Eagles saw his sacrifice up close.

“You could feel his body would be just kind of falling apart some days,” Johnson said. “The guy was just a damn warrior. Everybody has to battle in this game, but you saw a guy that really took it to the limit, emotionally, physically, the way he practiced.

“When you see a guy have to give all that effort into being what he’s become, then it motivates everybody else.”

In the end, Kelce’s toughness and determination couldn’t stave off the Eagles’ 1-6 finish, which ended with a first-round postseason loss at the Buccaneers. In the visiting locker room, the emotional captain spoke to the team as if retirement loomed, per Johnson.

When reporters were permitted inside, Kelce declined to talk.

“I don’t have it in me,” he said.

Six weeks later, Kelce made it official during a teary-eyed news conference: He was retiring from football.
