Kansas City Chiefs fans saw the player he could be when the team acquired him in a midseason trade with the New York Giants in the 2022 season.

He didn’t do much in the regular season but had a Super Bowl to remember, catching a go-ahead touchdown and soon after coming up clutch with the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.

His fingerprints were all over their win over the Eagles.

That kind of showing on the biggest stage gave Chiefs fans hope that Toney was going to be a big part of their present and future at wide receiver. He was expected to play a big role this past season but struggled mightily, recording just 27 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown in 13 games. He had several key drops that wound up turning into Patrick Mahomes interceptions, and just never looked the part.

Toney missed some time due to injury and even caused problems off the field as well before being a healthy scratch in the Super Bowl. Despite all that went wrong in the 2023 campaign, Toney is still being backed by Chiefs GM Brett Veach. Yikes.

After Toney was an inactive in the Super Bowl, it was fair to assume he had played in his last game as a Chief. They needed to upgrade the wide receiver room, and he was clearly a distraction, even if it didn’t result in the team losing the Super Bowl.

Kansas City still believes in the 25-year-old wide receiver, who didn’t play a single down in the postseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a ton of high expectations coming into the 2023 season for young wide receiver Kadarius Toney after the flashes he showed in 2022.

When the Chiefs acquired the former first-round pick from the New York Giants for a couple of draft picks, it seemed like a steal based on his skill set within Kansas City’s offense.

However, Toney took a major step back in 2023 as he had a couple of untimely drops and was inactive for the last three games of the regular season and the entire postseason run.

With the former Florida Gator wideout seemingly falling out of favor, there was a belief that the Chiefs could move on from Toney this offseason. But that doesn’t seem to be the case as head coach Andy Reid threw his support behind Toney and can’t wait to see him back on the field.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach echoed the same sentiments as Reid on Friday when speaking with the media.

“Kadarius Toney is probably our most talented wide receiver, ” Veach said (h/t Charles Goldman of AtoZSports). Veach also added that it’s just a matter of Toney staying healthy and they never stopped believing in him.

Last season, Toney had 27 receptions (38 targets) for 169 yards and a touchdown. Heading into this season, the 25-year-old receiver has a chance to drastically improve those numbers as the team’s No. 3 wideout behind Brown and Rashee Rice.

If the Chiefs want to win three straight titles this coming season, they are going to need Toney to live up to his first-round billing.

Especially with the new kickoff rules, rugby players may have an advantage due to the similar formations on the field. Reid didn’t close the door on the possibility of Rees-Zammit being utilized on returns.

Saying that special teams coordinator Dave Toub will also be working with Rees-Zammit to see how it goes, Reid is keeping his options open for the 23-year-old. However, giving him some reps as a running back seems to be the move for now.

“We’ll start him off at the running back position and get him to feel comfortable with that. Going forward here, he’s had an opportunity to also go down there to Dallas and work with Pat and so again, he’ll get used to some of these calls through our Zooms and the plays, and then we’ll just see where it goes from there.”

This makes plenty of sense as the role of a running back is probably the most similar to a rugby player. Running with the ball, absorbing contact, and avoiding tackles are skills that should presumably be able to translate to the NFL.

Rees-Zammit will need some time. It can’t be easy to transition to a different sport in the middle of your professional career. But, if any team is going to use him right, it will be the Chiefs under Andy Reid. We can’t wait to see how this experiment goes.
