LeBron James’ competitiveness has helped him break records and change organizations into winners.

At 39 years old, James knows that his remaining time in the NBA is limited — one reason, perhaps, as to why he was so frustrated when his Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Denver Nuggets again on Saturday night.

Despite boasting a halftime lead at Ball Arena, James and the Lakers went cold in the second half of their 2024 playoff opener and watched as Nikola Jokic led second-seeded Denver to a 114-103 comeback victory.

Seventh-seeded Los Angeles did not want to fall in a hole in the first round — and James lamented the Lakers’ inability to get the job done against a team that has tortured them in recent meetings.

Speaking to reporters late on Saturday night, James said that the Lakers have to commit themselves to greater focus and attention to the little things. James was the target of criticism himself for taking just six shots in the second half as the Lakers squandered a 60-57 lead built up over the first 24 minutes. Los Angeles’ turnovers became an issue, especially as Denver hardly turned the ball over at all (six turnovers to the Lakers’ 12), while the visitors were outrebounded 49-40 overall and 15-6 on the offensive glass. Against the defending NBA champions, James knows that effort wasn’t quite good enough.

Opportunity wasted?
James has been around long enough to understand that his team — not favored to beat the Nuggets in a best-of-seven series — has to take advantage of every potential marginal call or strong individual performance to have a shot at winning the series. It is possible that the Lakers’ best chance got away from them in Game 1.

Los Angeles was unable to win despite playing James and Anthony Davis more than 40 minutes apiece in difficult conditions at high altitude. While some criticized LeBron’s passive fourth quarter, he still put up 27 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Davis tied a game-high with 32 points while adding 14 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.

The two stars’ best efforts were hindered by poor shooting around them, and the Lakers were outscored by 21 points from the 3-point line in a tough defeat. James and Davis will have to summon another huge effort — and have a third player go off — in order to even the series on Monday night before it shifts to Los Angeles for Games 3 and 4.

Back in October, Kelce filed for five trademarks on phrases, including his own name.

In addition to his name, the NFL player is reportedly also looking to trademark his Instagram handle, ‘Killlatrav,’ his signature catchphrase, ‘Alright Nah,’ a reference to his jersey number, ‘Flight 87,’ and ‘Kelce’s Krunch.’

The filings claimed that Kelce will use the trademarks for a variety of purposes, including pins, posters, bobbleheads, clothing and even a cereal.

The ‘Killatrav’ filing states that its intended purpose is for jewelry, including label pins.

Kelce launched his limited edition ‘Kelce Krunch’ cereal last year after signing a multi-year endorsement deal with grocery store chain Hy-Vee, in 2021, with some of the proceeds going to his foundation.

The ‘Flight 87′ trademark is a nod to his jersey number, which also features in Kelce’s other endeavors, including his foundation, ’87 & Running.’ Its filing also states its intended purpose is jewelry.

Kelce, now infamously, first tried to capture Swift’s attention when he attended her Eras Tour show at Arrowhead stadium in July, revealing on his New Heights podcast later in the summer that he made a friendship bracelet with his number on to give to the pop icon.

He failed to meet Swift behind the scenes of her sold-out tour but his ‘metal’ podcast antics eventually caught her attention with the songstress revealing they began dating immediately.

Fans have accused Kayla Nicole of seeking to get back into the spotlight or even his life, after they broke up in 2022 in what became a very public fall out due to her prominence on social media and his role in the NFL. When the pair split, she even unfollowed Brittany Mahomes, the wife of the Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick, showing how far she wanted to distance herself but now she seems fine to interact with Kylie Kelce via TikTok.

It comes after she followed Brittany Mahomes shortly after Kelce began dating Taylor Swift, so the action to respond to his direct family is inconsistent with her claiming she needed to move on. “The reality is I know these people in real life,” Nicole said to People, of her unfollowing spree. “And so, in real life, I’ve communicated to these people why I’ve had to publicly make the decisions that I made.

 

“I have to move forward and everyone has to respect that. And hopefully when they respect that, that means that they’re no longer inserting me into things that do not involve me.” What did fans say?One user wrote on Reddit, “No it’s weird. Especially because Kayla has liked posts shading Taylor and one that was directly hating on Taylor, saying it looks like her breath stinks. “She’s so desperate and Kylie clearly isn’t gonna keep contact. It’s not like kayla was ever married to Travis or had kids”.

A second user wrote, “The desperate pick me energy is getting ridiculous. Leave that family alone WTF! They weren’t married, they didn’t have kids, go live your life girl!” Whilst a third added, “It’s beyond pathetic of her. Unfollowing Brittany and Patrick and everyone else claiming she was protecting her peace is such BS! No one had even posted anything about her at the time & the only one who even has is Brit.”

A fourth commented, “Travis needs to get a restraining order. She tried to make him jealous by being thirsty for Jalen Hurts now this? What’s next? She definitely seems like the type who would do some crazy s**t just to get back at him. “She wants Travis’s attention so bad. But girl weren’t you the one that dumped him? Let someone else enjoy him, you had your turn. Go away girl. She’s crazy af. Fr fr”.

There aren’t many athletes who can claim that they had a better year than Travis Kelce, both in their sport and personally speaking, as they reflect on 2023.

He also became the fastest tight end to reach 11,000 career receiving yards, and is on the verge of having the most 1,000+ yard seasons among current and retired players in his position (eight).

And things have been going well off the field, too. Travis is dating Taylor Swift, with the couple going from strength to strength, although some have been pointing fingers at the pop star for the Chiefs enduring a recent wobble in form.

Early Retirement

Let’s start with perhaps the touchiest of possibilities – Travis retiring just a year shy from 35, that is. Oh, to be 22, again…

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the eight-time Pro Bowler admitted that he’s becoming more and more aware of the pain and injuries his body sustains from playing week in and week out for six months from September to February.

‘That’s the only thing I’ve never really been open about, the discomfort. The pain,’ Travis said in November. ‘The lingering injuries — the 10 surgeries I’ve had that I still feel every single surgery to this day.’

But, four months prior to opening up on how he manifested the best year of his life to WSJ, Travis said he won’t step away from football, simply because he’s entering his mid-30s.

‘Till the wheels fall off, baby,’ Kelce said at Chiefs mandatory minicamp in June. ‘I love this game. I know I’m going to miss it when I’m done playing.’

Finishing his career back in his hometown

In a world full of surprises, who could possibly imagine Travis donning another NFL team’s jersey other than the Chiefs’ almighty red, white and gold colors?

Well, despite being a loyal servant to Kansas City, the team that drafted him in 2013 and for who he has played on for 11 seasons, Travis revealed his childhood dream of playing for the Cleveland Browns in the fall, having been raised in Westlake, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland.

He made the confession on his ‘New Heights’ podcast with rapper-rocker Machine Gun Kelly, also a Cleveland native, who offered Travis a $500,000 in cash to gear up in his hometown’s gear before calling time on his career.

‘I’ll tell you what, man, that’s an intriguing offer – an intriguing offer,’ Travis said in response to MGK’s bid to bring him back to his roots. ‘Because you know how much we love the east side of Cleveland. You already know, brother.’
