Kenyon Martin Says It’s Time For LeBron James To Have A Serious Conversation With Darvin Ham

Kenyon Martin rips Lakers coach for misusing Anthony Davis.

Speaking on the Gilbert Arenas Show, former NBA All-Star Kenyon Martin opened up on the Los Angeles Lakers this season. Amid a two-game deficit to the Denver Nuggets,

the Lakers are reeling and Martin says it’s Darvin Ham’s fault for not utilizing Anthony Davis.

“When Anthony Davis is on the floor, he should be featured,” said Martin. “Even with LeBron on the floor, he should be featured.

Kenyon Martin Says It's Time For LeBron James To Have A Serious Conversation With Darvin Ham | Yardbarker

Me and Darvin [Ham] gonna have to a conversation. We have a clear advantage right here. And while I’m on the floor, how many plays you got in the motherf**kin’ whatever that little card is that got #3 above the motherf**ker?”

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to run the offense through LeBron James and he’s managed to do a pretty good job getting everyone involved. Even so, the Lakers can be passive to a detriment when the game is on the line. In the series against the Nuggets so far, Davis has been the hot hand under the rim and his dominance has been the only reason they’ve been within striking distance. Down the stretch of these games, however, the Lakers. are often looking for James, Austin Reaves, or D’Angelo Russell to generate points while Davis is burdened with the primary defensive assignments.

Much like the Nuggets and how they lean on Nikola Jokic, Martin and Arenas want to see the Lakers put the ball in Davis’ hands and let him go to work with the ultimate freedom. With an average of 32 points per game already through the first two games, Davis can be even better if the Lakers make it a point to feed him consistently throughout their games. Now it’s just a matter of changing the game plan with hopes that the Nuggets will be unable to keep up.

Darvin Ham Is On The Hot Seat
Anthony Davis may be the x-factor for the Lakers, but Darvin Ham is the one calling the shots and many believe that his questionable strategies have cost the Lakers several wins already.

While Ham has expressed confidence that his job is not in jeopardy, that could change in the event of another series sweep against the Denver Nuggets. Last year, the Lakers had no answer for Nikola Jokic and the crew but there was hope coming into this series that they might figure out a plan to slow him down.

Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, that just hasn’t been the case in the first two games so far and it’s looking increasingly likely that the Nuggets will win in a 4-0 sweep for the second straight year. At this point, Darvin Ham isn’t just coaching to save the season, he’s coaching to save his job.

Between questionable rotations and ill-advised quotes, Lakers fans have all but turned on the second-year coach and even LeBron James expressed some frustration with his decisions. Sadly, for Ham, if he fails to get results this time, nobody will be surprised if he’s replaced this summer for a fresh voice in the locker room. Potential names include Phil Handy, Terry Stotts, and Dave Joerger.

For now, until the tough decisions are made in the offseason, the best that Ham can do is try and re-think his strategy to turn the situation around and find some kind of way to keep up with the defending champions.

What are we doing?’: LeBron James unloads on replay system after playoff defeat

LeBron James was seething after the Los Angeles Lakers watched a golden opportunity slip away.

His frustration wasn’t so much centered on blowing a 20-point lead.

Or his late missed three-pointer that rimmed out with the game tied. Or Jamal Murray’s fadeaway buzzer-beater that gave the Denver Nuggets a 101-99 win over the Lakers in Game 2 of their first-round series on Monday night.

James instead took aim at the NBA’s replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey, after a second-half foul on Michael Porter Jr was overturned.

LeBron James is chosen Western Conference player of the week - Los Angeles Times

A foul was initially called after Porter struck D’Angelo Russell in the face, but the call was reversed with the league saying Porter made only marginal contact on Russell.

“I don’t understand what’s going on in the replay center, to be honest,” said James, whose team heads back to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday facing a 2-0 deficit. “D-Lo clearly gets hit in the face on the drive. What the fuck do we have a replay center for … It doesn’t make sense. It makes no sense. It bothers me.”

Russell agreed with James. “That’s a foul we all saw it on national television,” Russell wrote on X after the game.

Murray and the Nuggets dug themselves out of a 68-48 hole in the third quarter to capture their 10th straight win over the Lakers.

James had a chance to give the Lakers a lead with about 16 seconds left on a wide-open three-pointer. “Rimmed out,” lamented James, who finished with 26 points and 12 assists. Porter grabbed the rebound, setting up Murray’s game-winner, a fadeaway jumper over Anthony Davis as time expired.

In discussing the replay center, James referenced Monday’s earlier game, when the New York Knicks rallied in the final 30 seconds for a wild 104-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks got the go-ahead three-pointer from Donte DiVincenzo with 13 seconds left, a possession that started when they stole the ball from Tyrese Maxey. Joel Embiid said Maxey was fouled, and also that coach Nick Nurse and some players had attempted to call timeout before the Knicks got the ball.

“What are we doing?” James said as he ended his postgame interview.

NBA Players Explain Picking Lakers’ LeBron James over Michael Jordan in GOAT Debate

NBA Players Explain Picking Lakers’ LeBron James over Michael Jordan in GOAT Debate

Michael Jordan is still the greatest of all time in the eyes of NBA players, but his lead over LeBron James is narrowing.

On Monday, The Athletic released the results of its annual player poll, and 45.9 percent of the 133 players who responded regarding the GOAT question picked His Airness.

That was followed by James at 42.1 percent and Kobe Bryant at 9.8 percent

Sam Amick of The Athletic noted Jordan’s lead over James is much smaller than it was in the same poll in 2019 (73 percent to 11.9 percent) and 2023 (58.3 percent to 33 percent).

While part of that can be explained by younger players entering the league who grew up watching James and are only familiar with Jordan through highlights, some of the players who picked the King discussed their rationale.

“I’d say LeBron,” one player said. “Just to be able to do it for 20 years, it’s insane. I think it’s more of a longevity thing that you have to look at there, and (how) still every year he’s playing at the highest level. With the highest expectations (placed on him), he had everything to lose in terms of coming into the league.

“It would’ve been very easy for him to underachieve and not meet those expectations, I think he’s far surpassed them, all of them, somehow. … Being on the floor, the closer you are to the game, the more of a sense (you get) for how great LeBron is, how he sees things, how he talks. His impact on the game, his gravity on the game is felt.”

Amick noted those who voted for James consistently pointed to his longevity, which isn’t surprising.

After all, he is 39 years old and just completed his 21st season in the league. While he may not be the same player he was at his peak, he still made the All-Star Game for the 20th time in his career this season and helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to the playoffs by averaging 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Nikola Jokić and Luka Dončić were the only other players in the league to average at least 25 points, eight assists and seven rebounds this season.

That longevity allowed him to break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record last year, further cementing his legacy as an all-time great.

“Who would I draft in an all-time draft?” one player said. “That’s the way I look at it, you know what I’m saying? Some people look at it like, ‘Who do I want taking the last shot?’ Blah, blah, blah, all this other sh–. But in an all-time draft, I’m choosing LeBron. Why? I get 20 years of greatness, and I get somebody who plays one through five (point guard through center). And let me just say, the person I choose No. 2 would be Shaq (O’Neal), the most dominant player of all time. So in my GOAT debate, I would go 1-2 like that. And this is coming from a Kobe (Bryant) fan.”

    Another player highlighted that longevity.

“(LeBron) for sure,” he said. “I think him being able to literally do everything and win (titles) with so many different organizations (the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Lakers) and also having the most points in his career, along with figuring out how to have longevity in his career. Everybody’s looking to have longevity, and he figured it out. He figured it out at the highest level. It doesn’t make any sense.”

James is still chasing Jordan in titles (six to four), NBA Finals MVPs (six to four) and league MVPs (five to four), but even that might underscore the difference between the two.

Jordan’s peak might never be matched. Even retiring for nearly two seasons to play baseball didn’t prevent him from winning six championships during an eight-year span and taking over both the league and popular culture as a whole.

But he played 14 seasons that were interrupted by multiple retirements. James has continued to play at an incredible level across 21 different campaigns and doesn’t look like he will be falling from the ranks of the league’s All-Stars anytime soon.

James’ anger was more distant — the NBA’s replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey. At the heart of his wrath was a second-half foul of Michael Porter Jr.

that was overturned with the league saying MPJ had made only marginal contact on D’Angelo Russell.

Porter grabbed the rebound, setting up Murray’s game-winner, a fadeaway jumper over Anthony Davis as time expired.

James got right to the point after the game.

    — On Denver’s comeback, which included being outscored 32-20 in the fourth: “We missed shots. We still got great looks and we just missed them. And they made it.”

    — On Russell hitting seven 3s after going 1 for 9 from deep in the series opener: “We never lost confidence in him. D-Lo is D-Lo.”

    — On if the Lakers can take anything from this game into Game 3 in L.A.: “Every game is its own challenge.”

    — On the challenges after a heartbreaking loss: “Of course it’s a heartbreaking game and you don’t want to lose in that fashion.”

That’s when James began voicing his frustration with the replay center. Earlier in the game, Murray was called for a foul when James drove to the basket, only to have the Nuggets successfully challenge for the foul to be waved off.

In his replay-center rant, James referenced Monday’s earlier game, when the New York Knicks rallied in the final 30 seconds of a chaotic 104-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks got the go-ahead 3-pointer from Donte DiVincenzo with 13 seconds left, a possession that started when they stole the ball from Tyrese Maxey.
