Ahead of the 2024 Miami GP this weekend, Lewis Hamilton hosted a party at the Virgin Hotel in New York. Soon after he hosted this party, he gave an interview to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) and explained the factors that influence his fashion choices. During his interview, he admitted that at times people need to manage discomfort if they are to flaunt their best outfits. He gave his own example of how he decided to show off his warm outfit in the Middle East even though he was “dying“.

“Climate makes a big difference too. I’ve been to Bahrain and the Middle East and worn some really warm clothing and was dying for the 30 seconds I’m walking down to the track. But that’s the price of fashion,” he explained.

Other than climate, Hamilton revealed that he decides on his fashion choices based on the brands he admires. He stated that he enjoys collaborating with designers and coming up “with custom pieces“.

The Briton then added that he also enjoys promoting “up-and-coming designers” by flaunting their outfits in the paddock. Hamilton believes that even though he is never short of options, he unfortunately only has “four days” to wear these designer outfits.

As a result, he believes “there’s only so much you can wear to the track“. Hamilton revealed that drivers then need to go back to their racing kits.

Although the 39-year-old does wear the Mercedes kit in the paddock as well, he wears the team’s outfits must lesser than other drivers. Moreover, an F1 expert has also pointed out that Hamilton could prompt other drivers also to ditch their team kits and flaunt their own outfits.

Ever since Lewis Hamilton confidently began showing off his designer outfits in the paddock, several other drivers have also begun to follow suit. Although drivers are required to wear their own team kits for a specific duration in the paddock, depending upon the terms of their contracts, an F1 expert believes that this could change.

While speaking via his YouTube channel a few months ago, veteran F1 photographer Kym Illman praised Hamilton for wearing “some amazing outfits” in the paddock. Illman then added that during his time in F1, it has mostly been only Hamilton who has had the liberty to ditch the team’s kit on most of the days in the paddock.

However, Illman believes that things could change moving forward. He pointed out how more drivers can negotiate their contracts to have the right “to wear their own choice of clothing to the track“.

Drivers are usually required to wear their team’s kits to display all the sponsors of their side. Since sponsors of the various sides will want the drivers to wear their team outfits, it seems that only the top drivers like Lewis Hamilton may be able to get away. Hence, most of the other drivers will most likely have an obligation to wear the team kits.

He is being released early from his contract and has the freedom to guide a new team’s development in light of the incoming 2026 regulation revamp, the details of which will be out later this year.

He leaves Red Bull next spring and is a free agent. Strangely, he will still attend races meanwhile, perhaps 10, though some computer access was shut down the moment his impending departure was made known.

The fact he will still be travelling abroad is no doubt out of respect for all he has contributed to the team as it leading boffin, and a man of courtesy, across 20 years. Anyone else would have been placed on gardening leave pronto.

The 65-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to Ferrari where he would join up with Lewis Hamilton next season.

However, for the meantime he says he will see out the year with Red Bull while continuing to work on his hypercar project, the RB17, which launches in the summer.

He said: “Ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars. My dream was to be an engineer in Formula One, and I’ve been lucky enough to make that dream a reality.

“For almost two decades it has been my great honour to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning team.

Lewis Hamilton, over the years, has made it evident that he loves New York City. The Brit has been in awe of the Big Apple since he was a child and earlier this week, Hamilton got to visit the city once more ahead of the Miami GP, and it made him relive his childhood.

Hamilton traveled to New York with Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff to be a part of a promotional event organized by WhatsApp, one of the Silver Arrows’ sponsors. This took place at the Empire State Building, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city and Hamilton got to be a part of something special.

Wolff and Hamilton were given the honor of pulling down a lever that turned the Empire State Building green.

While accepting a memento of a miniature replica of the landmark, Hamilton said,

“Incredible to be in the Empire State Building. I remember as a kid watching movies and seeing this incredible iconic building. And I was really fortunate my mom saved up and brought me out here for my 17th birthday. We came and visited and went to the top of this building.

The Stevenage-born driver went on to thank the American public for welcoming not just him and Wolff, but the entire traveling circus warmly. He wished for F1’s continued growth in the US, something that could happen very shortly.

Lewis Hamilton’s wish is already in the works

Since Liberty Media took over, F1 has been actively increasing the sport’s presence in the US. There are three American races on the calendar today- Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas. However, to garner even more eyeballs, F1 wants to replace Austin with New York, per reports.

Hamilton, however, is already carrying forward F1’s plans of introducing racing on the streets of New York City. He is set to drive the W12 on 5th Avenue on 30 April, which will help fuel Chase Cary’s (Formula 1 Management CEO) ambitions.
