Lakers dismiss coach Ham after an underwhelming season.
In a move that shocked nobody, the Los Angeles Lakers have officially decided to part ways with Darvin Ham. As announced on Friday by league insiders Shams Charania and Jovan Buha, Ham’s dismissal is effective immediately and will prompt an extensive coaching search over the upcoming offseason.
“The Los Angeles Lakers fired coach Darvin Ham after his second season with the team, which ended Monday in a first-round playoff exit with a loss to the Denver Nuggets, the organization announced on Friday,” wrote Shams via The Athletic. “Sources briefed on the matter say that an extensive search will commence soon, with candidates such as Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick, and, if he becomes available, Ty Lue, among others.”
The Lakers put a lot of faith in Ham out of the gate and they held a strong belief that he would be the one to maximize this Lakers team. But aside from their run to the West Finals last spring, Ham’s tenure has been defined by chaos and dysfunction at every turn.
This season is when the red flags started to emerge. As Ham continued putting questionable lineups on the floor, rumors of his weakening impact in the locker room were beginning to heat up. A few times, Lakers players even called out Ham publicly, with Anthony Davis famously saying that the Lakers had “no clue” what they were doing at times.
Meanwhile, LeBron James tried to step up and take the reigns for himself. He began to call his own plays for the team and resorted to ignoring Ham’s decisions in favor of his own. By the time the playoffs came around, Darvin’s tenure was already in jeopardy and it would have taken a run similar to last year’s in order to save his job. But now, the search for a new coach begins and who they hire next could make or break their future.
Who Will Be The Lakers’ Next Head Coach?
After hiring Darvin basically on the spot, the Lakers are expected to take a much slower approach to this process. Of course, with so many uncertainties about the roster, the Lakers may have to wait until after the prime free-agency season to make their decision.
As for potential candidates, Phil Handy has long been on the Lakers’ radar. He’s been a top assistant for years and he knows the Lakers organization and its players like the back of his hand. Despite his inexperience as a head coach, Handy could be a good fit for the Lakers if he’s able to come in and earn the respect of the players from the start.
Another potential name is former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer. While his end in Milwaukee was pretty ugly, his championship pedigree is uniquely qualified to lead the Lakers and orchestrate a game plan that can achieve the desired results.
There’s also JJ Redick. The former NBA veteran has gained popularity for showing off his extensive basketball knowledge and several teams have already expressed interest in bringing him on in a head coaching role.
Whatever the Lakers decide, they must pick someone who aligns with their long-term goals and can establish an identity that strengthens the core of the team. Clearly, Darvin Ham was not the answer and they cannot afford to make another mistake like that again.
The Lakers have fired Darvin Ham and there are five major coaching candidates to replace him.
The Los Angeles Lakers have fired Darvin Ham, and we can’t say that we didn’t see it coming. Ham finished his coaching career with the Lakers with a 90-74 record, including a Western Conference Finals appearance last season. However, the Lakers lost in five games to the Denver Nuggets this season, and that sparked the end of Ham’s reign on the sidelines.
There are five major coaching candidates for the Lakers to consider to replace Ham, and each will have their own advantages when it comes to coaching the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Davis with a title-contending roster.
1. Tyronn Lue
Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Age: 47 Years
Coaching Record: 312-217
Tyronn Lue is at the top of the Los Angeles Lakers wishlist and for obvious reasons. Firstly, he is an exceptional coach when it comes to in-game management and rotations. He has built a reputation for making adjustments during a single game, and even more so during an NBA playoff series. This is a skill that the majority of coaches simply don’t have.
Not to mention, Lue was a former player who played for the Lakers and forged a career as a backup guard for a title-contending team that featured Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. Perhaps most importantly, he coached LeBron James to an NBA championship in 2016 when he spearheaded a 3-1 comeback against the Golden State Warriors.
Lue is also the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers and has done a sensational job with the team by making them competitive despite the constant injuries to Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. The Clippers made the Western Conference Finals in 2021 with Leonard out, and there are hopes Lue can accomplish great things with James and Davis on the roster.
2. Mike Budenholzer
Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
Age: 54 Years
Coaching Record: 484-317
In terms of head coaching “free agents”, Mike Budenholzer is the best right now. His coaching is widely respected and the man has been through it all with the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, and Milwaukee Bucks. Budenholzer started as a video coordinator with the Spurs before becoming an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich, later winning four NBA titles.
Budenholzer then became the head coach for the Atlanta Hawks, where he continued his progression as a coach until the 2014-15 season when he won Coach of the Year and was named the head coach for the Eastern Conference All-Stars. Budenholzer also had his hand as an executive, becoming the head of basketball operations for the franchise before the Milwaukee Bucks came knocking.
With the Bucks, Budenholzer assisted with the growth of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, eventually winning an NBA title with them in the 2020-21 season. Despite his sudden firing following the 2022-23 season (after his brother died in a car crash), Budenholzer has the acumen to be the head coach for a title-contending team with the Lakers because he has proved it multiple times over.
3. JJ Redick
Credit: Fadeaway World
Age: 39 Years
Coaching Record: 0-0
Beyond sharing an extremely interesting podcast with LeBron James, JJ Redick is a sound basketball mind. His points during his takes on sports shows are impressive and he demands respect with his basketball knowledge. We already saw how a role player (and excellent shooter) like Steve Kerr developed into an all-time great coach, so why can’t JJ Redick follow the same mold?
That is what the Lakers are thinking about when potentially considering Redick for their head coaching position. Redick doesn’t have head coaching experience at a professional level, and that could be a major issue, but there are no doubts about his basketball mind stemming from his days as a Duke legend in college. The key for Redick to succeed is getting the respect he deserves from his players, and based on what we are seeing from the podcast, it is there.
Redick and James will be able to share ideas on the court, in the locker room, and in meetings. His lack of experience could place him third on the list of best Lakers coaching options but don’t sleep on the prospect of the former sharpshooter finding a new career path this summer.
4. Phil Handy
Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Age: 52 Years
Coaching Record: 0-0
Phil Handy is currently an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers and a player development trainer. He began purely as a player development coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under Mike Brown before transitioning to the role of assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, contributing significantly to their success.
From there, Handy brought his wealth of knowledge to the Toronto Raptors, serving as an assistant under the esteemed Nick Nurse. But the pull of the Lakers was strong, and Handy found himself back in familiar territory, this time under the guidance of Frank Vogel. Throughout his tenure, Handy appeared in a staggering six consecutive championships. With the Cavaliers, he clinched four Finals appearances from 2015 to 2018, securing championships in 2016 with LeBron James as a player.
His stint with the Raptors added another Finals appearance in 2019, followed by another championship with the Lakers in 2020 with James also on the roster. Handy’s coaching acumen and winning mentality could make him an interesting target for the Lakers who could give him the shot to prove his worth as a head coach.
5. Kenny Atkinson
Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports
Age: 56 Years
Coaching Record: 118-190
Kenny Atkinson has coaching experience and some interesting parts of his NBA story. He began his NBA coaching career as an assistant under Mike D’Antoni with the New York Knicks in 2008, before transitioning to the Atlanta Hawks under Mike Budenholzer in 2012.
However, it was in 2016 that Atkinson’s star truly began to rise when he was appointed as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Despite a challenging start, Atkinson’s tenure with the Nets showcased steady improvement. In his second season, the team saw notable progress despite the departure of key player Brook Lopez. By his third season, Atkinson had guided the Nets to a playoff berth, marking a significant milestone in the team’s journey.
However, Atkinson’s time with the Nets ended unexpectedly when he stepped down as head coach on March 7, 2020. However, he became an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers under Tyronn Lue in November 2020 before being an assistant coach for the 2022 championship Warriors. With this extensive experience in the league, and despite his sub-.500 coaching record, Atkinson could be a great option for the Lakers to consider.
CHRISITAN Horner’s accuser has been left “upset, scared and intimidated” over the sexting scandal, according to a family friend.
The unnamed woman, who accused the Red Bull Racing chief of abusive behaviour and sexual harassment, is said to be “determined for the truth to come out”.

Horner, 50, was cleared of misconduct by a Red Bull investigation back in February.
But the scandal was taken to a new level when sexually suggestive texts appearing to be sent by the F1 boss were leaked.
Horner’s accuser – a female colleague – has since been suspended by Red Bull and has appealed the decision.
She has been left feeling “very upset, angry, scared, intimidated and lonely” following the saga, a family friend told BBC Sport.

News of Adrian Newey’s departure from Red Bull led to rumors of several teams on the paddock being interested in him. However, whichever team he potentially joins will have to wait until 2026 to avail his services officially. To counter this, Newey’s lawyers are ensuring he can get to work as soon as possible.
Newey’s current Red Bull contract runs out at the end of the 2025 season. Per the terms of this deal, if he is to leave Red Bull in 2024, the Austrian stable will make him serve a one-year gardening leave.
BBC’s Andrew Benson reports that Newey is eager to cut ties with the Milton-Keynes-based outfit and embark on his next project in F1. He wrote,
“His lawyers are securing an early exit and he will be free to start work from next year, high-level sources close to Red Bull and Newey have said.”
View post on X
Newey‘s ‘gardening leave’ clause means that he won’t be able to work on his ‘new’ team’s 2026 car. This will put him out of sync with the new regulations. However, if his team of lawyers can negotiate that early release, it could give Newey’s future employers a massive advantage.
F1’s regulation changes will focus on the engine side of things in particular. But the sport has also teased the possibility of introducing ‘active aerodynamics’, which makes 2026 the year that could see a massive reshuffle in terms of the pecking order.
Adrian Newey’s discontent with Christian Horner
The reported reason behind Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull is his discontent with how the team dealt with Christian Horner’s saga. Newey, at this stage of his career wants stability internally and a good project to work on. Red Bull doesn’t offer the former at the moment.
For Red Bull, Newey’s departure could mark the beginning of the end of their dominance. Newey was one the main brains behind their Championship wins between 2010 and 2013, and again from 2022 to present date.

If Newey leaves, other key personnel could depart including Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver, who won three World Championships in a row also craves a peaceful environment and is linked with a move to Mercedes in the near future.
Following the Golden State Warriors’ absence from the playoffs, there’s uncertainty surrounding the team’s trajectory for the upcoming season. Steph Curry, named the 2024 Clutch Player of the Year, addressed this issue during a segment on TNT’s Inside the NBA. He shared thoughts on the disappointing season and offered insights into what lies ahead for the Warriors.
“The sad part was just missing three wins to get out of the play-in and have yourself in a playoff series,” Curry said. “Even a game like in Sacramento in the play-in tournament we had, [if it’s the playoffs] you’re like ‘Okay, we’re down one and can game plan to try to get back into the series.’ Obviously early in the year we had a lot of missteps and some absences, but you do realize we’re not that far off. To stay at this level, at this peak for so long, there’s going to be some tweaks.”
On those tweaks, Curry added, “When you lose, you have to look yourself in the mirror and say, ‘What can we do to get better? What holes can we fill?’ And thankfully we have some time to figure that out. So lot of conversations with upstairs, with coach Kerr to try to figure out how to get back to the level we expect. I didn’t answer anything specific about what we need, but we’re going to figure that out over this summer.”

Adrian Newey is understood to have held talks with Ferrari this week after being released from his Red Bull contract early — a departure that was confirmed by the world championship-winning team on Wednesday.
A move to Italy would bring Formula One’s most successful designer into partnership with Lewis Hamilton, who is joining the Scuderia from Mercedes next year.
The Newey deal has yet to be done, but well-informed contacts suggest Ferrari want the 65-year-old to act as their ‘super consultant’. He currently earns £15million a year and could double his salary.
It is expected he would start in time to have a pivotal hand in the development of the next generation of Ferrari cars ahead of a major revamp of the regulations in 2026.
Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport reported Newey spoke to Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur in London on Tuesday — a story indicated to be correct to Mail Sport. We can further reveal that several key F1 figures were in London this week, including Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff.

MAX VERSTAPPEN could have breached the terms of his Red Bull contract – by going skiing.
The F1 world champion spent time on the slopes between the Australian GP, where he was forced to retire with a brake problem, and this week’s Japanese GP.

The three-time world champion was forced to end his race early in Melbourne due to a brake failure, allowing Carlos Sainz – who had already passed him on track – to claim the eventual race win.
With no race last weekend, Verstappen has had time to relax – but may have landed himself in hot water after his winter sports trip.
The 26-year-old has a dangerous sports clause inserted in his £43m a year deal at Red Bull to prevent him from the risk of getting injured.
And that is understood to include skiing – although that did not stop him according to Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko.
