The story behind the star: Discover the individuals who have played crucial roles in Patrick Mahomes’s extraordinary ascent to NFL superstardom.

The Rise of Patrick Mahomes: How a Network of Support Helped Launch an NFL Phenomenon

Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm since becoming the starting quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. In just four seasons as a starter, he has established himself as one of the best and most electrifying players in the league. Mahomes has thrown for over 14,000 yards and 114 touchdowns while leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory in 2020. He is a one-man highlight reel who makes the impossible seem routine with his otherworldly arm talent and improvisational skills.

However, Mahomes’ rise to superstardom was not a solo effort. Behind every great athlete is a strong support system that helped them develop and achieve success. For Mahomes, that support system started within his own family and continued to grow as he progressed through high school, college and into the pros. While his God-given talents are undeniable, Mahomes would not be where he is today without the guidance, coaching and relationships provided by key figures along the way.

    Family Foundation

One of the most important influences in Mahomes’ development was his father, Pat Mahomes Sr. A former major league baseball pitcher, Mahomes Sr. instilled a strong work ethic in his son from a young age. He coached Patrick in various youth sports, recognizing and nurturing his athletic abilities. Mahomes Sr. emphasized fundamentals, discipline and competitive fire – traits that would serve his son well as his talents emerged on the football field.

“My dad was always big on working hard. He coached all of my baseball teams and my basketball teams when I was younger,” Mahomes said. “I saw how hard he worked to be the best baseball player he could be. I kind of adopted that mindset and work ethic.”

Mahomes Sr.’s guidance during Patrick’s formative years was instrumental in shaping him into the elite athlete he is today. The valuable life lessons of dedication, practice and mental fortitude translated seamlessly to football as Mahomes began honing his skills in high school. His father played a huge role in cultivating the work ethic and competitive drive that have propelled Mahomes to the NFL summit.

    High School Breakout

At Whitehouse High School in Texas, Mahomes began to turn heads with his prodigious arm talent and athleticism on the gridiron. He put up huge numbers in his junior and senior seasons, throwing for over 11,000 career yards and 103 touchdowns. College programs took notice of Mahomes’ rare skills, but he was still flying under the radar compared to other top quarterback recruits.

One of the first coaches to truly recognize Mahomes’ star potential was Kliff Kingsbury, then the head coach at Texas Tech. Kingsbury made Mahomes a priority recruit and played a pivotal part in convincing him to commit to Texas Tech over other schools. This decision would prove fateful, as Kingsbury’s offensive scheme was tailor-made to unleash Mahomes’ full abilities. With Kingsbury’s mentorship, Mahomes was primed for a breakout college career.

    College Coming-Out Party

At Texas Tech, Mahomes thrived under Kingsbury’s innovative Air Raid offense. The system emphasized spreading the field with four and five wide receiver sets, allowing Mahomes the freedom to showcase his cannon arm. In his first season as the starter, Mahomes threw for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns, leading the nation in both categories.

He followed that up by breaking numerous school and conference records as a junior in 2016, including single-season marks for passing yards (5,052) and touchdowns (53). Mahomes led Texas Tech to a bowl victory and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting that year. It was clear he possessed otherworldly physical tools and field vision unlike any college quarterback in recent memory.

Kingsbury played a pivotal role in maximizing Mahomes’ talents. His schemes gave Mahomes the opportunity to let it fly downfield without restraints. Kingsbury also fostered Mahomes’ improvisational skills by allowing him to extend plays outside the pocket. This experience allowed Mahomes’ raw abilities to be fully cultivated in a proving ground before making the leap to the NFL. Kingsbury’s vision was a major factor in Mahomes’ path to stardom.

    Draft Day Intrigue

Despite a dazzling college career, questions lingered around Mahomes heading into the 2017 NFL draft. He had unorthodox mechanics and played in an Air Raid system not closely resembling NFL offenses. There were concerns if he could replicate his collegiate production at the pro level.

However, one team saw past the doubts – the Kansas City Chiefs. New head coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach were intrigued by Mahomes’ rare physical tools and football IQ. During the pre-draft process, Reid spent extra time with Mahomes, seeing his dedication and understanding of the game. On draft night, Kansas City traded up to select Mahomes 10th overall, believing in his potential under Reid’s tutelage.

The pick was met with skepticism by many experts. But Reid, with his innovative offensive mind and history of developing quarterbacks, felt he could harness Mahomes’ raw skills. It was the perfect marriage of prospect and coach, one that would pay dividends for years to come in Kansas City.

    Chiefs Kingdom

As a rookie in 2017, Mahomes spent the season studying behind veteran Alex Smith and learning Reid’s complex West Coast system. The following year, Mahomes took over as the full-time starter and immediately set the league on fire. In his first season at the helm, Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, joining exclusive company by becoming just the second QB ever to surpass 5,000 yards and 50 scores.

He led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game, showcasing his otherworldly arm talent and knack for making highlight-reel plays look routine. Reid’s scheme allowed Mahomes to attack all areas of the field, utilizing his mobility, vision and cannon arm. The marriage between player and system was a match made in football heaven.

In 2019, Mahomes built on his breakout season by guiding Kansas City back to the Super Bowl. There, he outdueled 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, throwing for 286 yards and 3 touchdowns to earn Super Bowl MVP honors in a 31-20 victory. At just 24 years old, Mahomes had reached the pinnacle, cementing his status as the new face of the NFL.

While his physical talents are unmatched, Mahomes’ success is also due to his tireless work ethic, football IQ and ability to make razor-sharp decisions on the fly. These traits were cultivated over many years through the guidance of influential figures like his father, Kingsbury and Reid. The Chiefs also surrounded Mahomes with elite playmakers like tight end Travis Kelce, giving him a strong supporting cast.

From his upbringing to his collegiate coming-out party to finding the perfect pro system, Mahomes’ path was paved by dedication, visionary coaching and key relationships. His rise exemplifies how success in sports is truly a team effort. Now entering his prime, Mahomes is poised for many more magical seasons in Kansas City with support from the entire Chiefs Kingdom behind him. The phenomenal career of one of the NFL’s brightest young stars was built on the foundation laid by those who helped him along the way.

This Day in Lakers History: Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal Shine in Crucial Win Over Mavericks During Lockout-Shortened Season. ‎

The NBA season is a long, grinding marathon that lasts for 82 games before the playoffs begin. That is, except for the rare occasions when it doesn’t. On May 3, 1999, the Los Angeles Lakers were preparing for the playoffs in one such year.

The NBA season, which typically starts somewhere around the end of November, didn’t begin that year until February thanks to a lockout as players and owners struggled to come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement.

In order to save the season, the NBA created a shortened, 50-game schedule that saw contests crammed into a small amount of time. This created unique problems as teams attempted to find their rhythm as quickly as possible before the playoffs began.
NBA on ESPN - 20 years ago today, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O' Neal combined for 62 points to upend the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 3 of the NBA Finals 🔥 | Facebook
That season’s Los Angeles Lakers featured a stacked lineup that included Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and Glen Rice, who was acquired mid-season in a trade for the popular Eddie Jones.

As the season wound down, the Lakers found themselves in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race, fighting with the Houston Rockets for the fourth seed behind the San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trailblazers.

The Lakers would take on the Dallas Mavericks in the second-to-last game of the regular season and in need of a win in order to stay ahead of the Rockets in the standings, which would provide home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

When they needed them most, the Lakers’ stars showed up. Bryant picked the Mavs apart with his underrated passing, which led to a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. Not to be outdone, O’Neal notched a double-double of his own with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

These performances allowed the Lakers to cruise to a 115-102 victory against the Mavericks, which would help them secure home-court in the first round. This game also had the added benefit of giving the Lakers an up-close look at two Mavs big men who eventually became Lakers in A.C. Green (who was previously with the team) and Samaki Walker.

Lakers would lose to Spurs in 1999 playoffs

Both Walker and Green would later help the Lakers win championships. But the Lakers would ultimately fall in the 1999 playoffs to the Spurs, but would have their revenge by kicking off a three-peat of championships starting the next season.

LeBron James Has Pursued a Third Star for Over a Year, But Lakers Pushed Back on the Plan. ‎

LeBron James Has Wanted A Third Star For Over A Year But Lakers Pushed Back On That Plan

It appears that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have been at odds with each other for over a year, on the topic of adding a third star. The Athletic’s Jovan Buha is reporting that while LeBron has wanted a third star, the team has pushed back on the idea.

“The Lakers have pushed back in recent weeks and months on the notion of going down the three-star build path, so we’ll see how that all shakes out, but I think LeBron James is going to have a say in that,” Buha said on The Athletic NBA Show. “He obviously has the option to be a free agent and all the intel I’ve gathered over the last year plus has been LeBron has been pushing for a third star.”

While the Lakers have pushed back on LeBron’s plan for all this time, I am not sure they will be able to this offseason. The 39-year-old has a player option worth $51.4 million for 2024-25 and is expected to opt out of it to become a free agent.

James already has all the leverage and if he desperately wants that third star, the Lakers will have to go for it. Refusing to budge on their stance could lead to the 20-time All-Star leaving for nothing, which would be a disaster. That would end the Lakers’ title window immediately, which is something they wouldn’t want.

I understand that the Lakers would want to keep an eye on their future, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. If they want LeBron to stick around, they might well have to part with some players and picks. Of course, all of this is moot if James is fine with staying even if they don’t fulfill his wish of getting a third star.

The Lakers seem to believe that some smaller moves would help them improve enough to the point that they can contend next season. If they can add some size and bench scoring, I think they will be in a good place for 2024-25, but would it be enough to go all the way and win the title? I doubt that.

LeBron James Spoke On His Future

Following that first-round exit at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, LeBron refused to comment on his future with the Lakers, when asked if he had played his final game for the franchise. That led to a whole lot of speculation, which in turn led to James addressing his NBA future on social media.

“I’ve seen, heard a lot of reports about my future. I said it last night and I’ll say it again. I do not know yet as I’m only thinking about spending time with my family & friends! When I know after speaking with the fam, my counsel as well as my representation about it then you guys will know. Until then, Love.”

LeBron is keeping his cards close to his chest for now. As per The Athletic, the Lakers are open to offering LeBron a $164 million extension and drafting Bronny James. Keeping that in mind, the only way I don’t see him back on the Lakers next season is if there is a major falling-out over this issue about the third star.

Lakers News: LeBron James Reflects On Losing To Nuggets In 2024 NBA Playoffs. ‎

The Los Angeles Lakers got bounced out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year by the Denver Nuggets, setting up what will be another pivotal offseason for the franchise.

Head coach Darvin Ham admitted it was tough to see the Lakers’ season end in similar fashion, and now could very well find himself on the way out sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, LeBron James’ future is also up in the air as he has a player option for the 2024-25 season that he is expected to decline.

Despite his uncertain future, James had no problem giving the Nuggets their due after they were eliminated.

“First of all, you tip your hat to them,” James said. “Defending champions. Super great team. Super well coached and you tip your hats to them. They made the plays down the stretch to win this series. You give credit where credit is due, that’s for sure.”

James also emphasized that just because they competed well against Denver doesn’t mean he’s entirely confident they can get over the hump, though he did attribute their struggles to injuries. “No, because we lost. I’m not a participation guy. We lost, and you move on and see how you can get better but our season has been derailed all season with injuries and guys in and out.

“I talked about it all year. It’s hard to say who we are or what we can be because have yet to be whole. We were probably whole maybe one or two times this year and I know one of them was during the In-Season Tournament we got whole and we showed what we was capable of doing, but we was just hit with injuries after injuries after injuries. It’s just hard to come back from that.”

Los Angeles opted to standpat at the trade deadline despite getting healthy seasons from Anthony Davis and James, and that decision could haunt them next year. While there are reports that the most likely route for the King is to re-sign with the Lakers, things can change rapidly in the coming months.

Dwight Howard believes Lakers would’ve three-peated if 2020 team didn’t split

There has been considerable debate as to whether or not the Lakers would’ve been better off keeping their team together after winning the 2020 NBA Championship. Dwight Howard, a key member of that title team, believes that Los Angeles would’ve three-peated had the team just stayed together.

Patrick Mahomes doesn’t think his wife, Brittany Mahomes, gets the credit she deserves.

“People don’t even realize how much she does, taking care of the day-to-day stuff and making it so where I can focus on football, focus on my craft and everything like that,” the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said on Logan Paul’s podcast, “Impaulsive,” Thursday.

Patrick, 28, described Brittany, also 28, as “a half of fame mom” to their two 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren, 3-year-old daughter Sterling and 1-year-old son Bronze, as well as “a hall of fame wife.”

Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving: Questioning GMs & Presidents About Absence from Lakers and LeBron James Reunion. ‎

The Lakers are reportedly going to look to chase after a third star in the summer, with Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell the most likely targets. However, Los Angeles was also linked to Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving, who’s currently still in the postseason.

There’s been no secret that the Lakers have been strongly interested in reuniting LeBron James with his former co-star in Irving, though at this point it feels like the opportunity has passed them by. Irving attended a Los Angeles playoff game last year because of his interest in playing with James again but admitted then he was happy with Dallas.
Dallas Mavericks' Kyrie Irving 'Definitely Considered' Joining LeBron James, Lakers
In the midst of his playoff run with the Mavericks, Irving confirmed that reuniting with James was in consideration, via Melissa Rohlin of FOX Sports:

“Everything was considered,” Irving told FOX Sports after Game 5 on Wednesday in Los Angeles, flashing a smile.

Irving went on to say that his chance to play with James was out of his hands and that stakeholders for teams should be asked why the two didn’t get another opportunity together:

“He’s a great friend of mine, a great brother of mine,” Irving told FOX Sports. “We obviously played together [in Cleveland]. Everybody knows our history. But there were so many different factors in between. When it comes to business decisions, you have to ask the GMs, the presidents why certain things didn’t work out.”

Lastly, the star point guard admitted that he’ll think about what could have been playing alongside James a second time:

But that doesn’t mean every once in a while, his mind won’t drift to what could’ve been had he and James gotten a second chance.

“Yeah,” he said, “It was fun to think about it.”

A bonafide scorer and go-to option in the postseason, Irving would’ve been a perfect fit for this year’s Lakers team that struggled to score when James wasn’t on the floor. It’s fun to think about them winning high-leverage games for Los Angeles, but that seems more like a dream than a reality at this current juncture.
