Shaquille O’Neal has gone down as one of the greatest players in NBA history, but he isn’t really part of that GOAT conversation. During an appearance on The Old Man and The Three podcast, O’Neal stated he is a bit jealous that his name isn’t mentioned alongside the likes of Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

“I get jealous that my name is not in that greatest of all times (conversation),” O’Neal said. “… The most dominant category? I’m him, you only can say one other name (Wilt Chamberlain), I don’t want to hear nobody else’s name.”

“Greatest of all time, I would like to be in that conversation,” O’Neal continued. “But if it’s not definite — see when you talk about (LeBron James) and (Michael Jordan) it’s definite and Kobe (Bryant) should be in it. It’s definite, they’re greatest players. I want to be in that conversation, if I’m not in that conversation, I don’t want no f***ing considerations, don’t give me no considerations.”

I think what makes matters worse for O’Neal is that deep down, he knows he could have been in that conversation. If the 52-year-old had taken better care of his body during his career and was more focused on the game, he could have been the greatest ever.

O’Neal won four titles, three Finals MVPs, an MVP, and two scoring titles during his time in the NBA. He was a 14-time All-Star and had career averages of 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 0.6 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game. At his absolute peak, O’Neal was the most dominant force in modern NBA history. It is a testament to his greatness, though, that many, including myself, think he underachieved.

Del Harris, who coached him on the Los Angeles Lakers, said O’Neal would have been the GOAT if he had Bryant’s mentality. His former teammate echoed that sentiment as well. Kobe said O’Neal would have been the greatest if he had a good work ethic like him. I don’t think either was exaggerating by any means there.

 

In the end, O’Neal’s absolute peak didn’t last as long as Jordan’s, and he didn’t have LeBron’s longevity either. As a result, his resume isn’t as great as theirs, and he finds himself just a tier or two below them.

While the big man isn’t interested in getting any consideration for that GOAT title if he isn’t in the conversation, he does firmly believe he is one of the best to ever do it. O’Neal shared his list of the 10 greatest players and stated he absolutely has to be in there.

There are some big reputations at the Kentucky Derby this year: Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was spotted at the 150th run for the roses.

Kelce was also sighted at Sports Illustrated’s Revel At the Races event, which took place at the Ice House in downtown Louisville Friday night. Kelce was with his friends, The Chainsmokers, and danced all evening with a group at an exclusive table, according to a press release from RMG PR.

At the Derby Saturday, Kelce was spotted wearing a white, pinstripe suit reminiscent of 1920s fashion. On his head, he wore a dark blue fedora. There were rumors in the days leading up to the Derby that his superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift could also be in attendance Saturday, along with Kelce’s brother Jason.

Swift begins performing her Eras Tour in Paris, France, later this week. Social media reports Saturday said her private plane had been tracked to Paris.

“He reminds me of my ex,” Kramer, 40, told guest star Josie Van Dyke during the Sunday, May 5, episode of her “Whine Down” podcast. “But it just feels a little corny, cheesy. Patrick Mahomes has taken the NFL by storm since joining the league in 2017. In just a few short years, he has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the game today. Mahomes’ combination of elite physical skills, work ethic, and competitive fire have allowed him to achieve unprecedented success at both the college and professional levels. His story is a testament to what can be accomplished through dedication and hard work.

Texas Roots and Dual-Threat Talent

Born in Tyler, Texas in 1995, Mahomes comes from an athletic family. His father Pat Mahomes played in the major leagues as a pitcher for several years in the 1990s. It was almost destined that young Patrick would have a career in sports. He showed a natural aptitude for athletics from a very early age, lettering in multiple sports throughout high school.

Mahomes excelled at both baseball and football from a young age. As a multi-sport star at Whitehouse High School, he started at quarterback for the football team and was also a standout pitcher and outfielder for the baseball squad. Scouts saw potential in him for both sports. He had an absolute cannon for an arm in both football and baseball. Some projected Mahomes as a potential first-round MLB draft pick due to his skills on the mound and at the plate.

However, Mahomes’ heart truly belonged to football. He loved the speed of the game and competitive fire it took to be the quarterback. While he still played competitive baseball his first two years of college, the gridiron began to take center stage as his talents continued developing. Mahomes dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps to the NFL.

College Standout with a Difficult Choice

After graduating high school, Mahomes decided to take his talents to Texas Tech University. There, he would have the opportunity to play quarterback under head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who ran an offensive scheme tailored to Mahomes’ dual-threat abilities. Over the next few seasons, Mahomes’ skills would be put on full display for the nation.

In his first season as the starter in 2015, Mahomes threw for over 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. He flashed the type of arm talent and playmaking few quarterbacks possessed. His sophomore year saw similar production. But it was his junior season in 2016 that put Mahomes’ name on the map.

That year, Mahomes led the nation with 5,052 passing yards and 53 total touchdowns (41 through the air). He set NCAA and school records that still stand today. Scouts and analysts were blown away by Mahomes’ rare combination of size, athleticism, and accuracy. He was a true dual-threat who could beat defenses with both his arm and legs.

However, Mahomes now faced a difficult choice – return for his senior season or enter the 2017 NFL Draft. As a projected mid-round pick, coming back for one more year made sense. But baseball still tugged at Mahomes as well. He had been drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft and still held pro potential on the diamond.

After much deliberation, Mahomes decided in early 2017 to forgo his final year of college eligibility and baseball to declare for the NFL Draft. It was a gamble to enter early as a developmental prospect, but Mahomes’ confidence in his abilities won out. He was ready to prove himself at the sport’s highest level.

From Baseball to Breaking Records

In his three seasons as the Texas Tech starter, Mahomes rewrote the college football record books. His 11,252 passing yards, 93 touchdowns, and only 29 interceptions are still among the best marks in FBS history. Mahomes led the nation in numerous categories during his record-breaking junior campaign.

Scouts were impressed not only with Mahomes’ production, but also his intangibles and work ethic. He was a tireless film grinder who took his preparation extremely seriously. The decision to give up his baseball career and return for his senior football season also showed Mahomes’ commitment. He believed wholeheartedly in his ability to become an NFL starter. Leaving college early was a gamble, but one Mahomes felt he needed to take to achieve his dreams.

Come draft day in 2017, Mahomes’ potential was evident. However, concerns over his unorthodox mechanics and lack of experience in a pro-style system caused him to fall out of the top-10 picks. The Kansas City Chiefs saw his upside and selected Mahomes 10th overall.

Initially, Mahomes sat behind veteran Alex Smith and learned the ropes as a rookie. He flashed his playmaking skills in limited action off the bench. But the 2018 season would be Mahomes’ true coming out party.

With Smith traded to Washington, Mahomes took over as KC’s starter in his second year. He hit the ground running, putting on arguably the greatest individual quarterback season ever. Mahomes led the league with 5,097 passing yards and 50 touchdowns through the air. In Super Bowl LIII, Mahomes nearly led the Chiefs all the way back from a 20-10 fourth quarter deficit, but they ultimately fell to Tom Brady and the Patriots in a classic game.

In an April 24 interview with People, Donna Kelce shared what she thought about Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

“I listened to the whole album, and I listened to it all morning long when it was released,” she revealed.

“I was just very impressed,” she said. “She is a very talented woman and I think it is probably her best work.”

In the early days of Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce, Donna Kelce played it coy when TODAY’s Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie asked her about their potential romance on Oct. 6.

“It’s fairly new, so I don’t like to talk about it,” she said.

The 71-year-old had recently been spotted hanging out with Swift in a private box at a Chiefs game, and she referenced the moment in her interview with TODAY.

“It’s just one of those things where you know, obviously everybody saw me. I was in the boxes with her and it’s just another thing that’s amped up my life,” she said.

Mama Kelce declined to confirm if things were getting romantic between the two stars and said, “I honestly can’t tell you. It’s just too new.”

However, she did say that hanging out with Swift “was OK” and explained that she doesn’t like to talk about her sons’ personal lives in public.

During an appearance on the 3rd Hour of TODAY, Donna Kelce opened up about what she and Swift were talking about during the game.

“You know what it was? I was talking about this. You know when the commercial people come out in the orange gloves and they’re on the field? I was mentioning when they go like this (waves hands in a circular motion), the commercial’s over and they can play again.”

During an interview with People in October 2023, Donna Kelce said she didn’t consider herself a Swiftie before Swift started dating Travis Kelce.

“My era was Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, things like that. That’s more my music,” she said.

Donna Kelce then said, “But obviously, talent is talent.”

While appearing on an episode of the “Got It From My Momma” podcast in October, Donna Kelce said all the media attention surrounding her son’s relationship Swift felt surreal.

“I feel like I’m in an alternate universe because it’s something that I’ve never been involved with before,” she said.

The mom also said she’d heard about the “Taylor effect,” or how Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce inspired her fans to watch football.

“I had one dad who DM’ed me, and he said, ‘Finally, finally, my daughter is watching football with me,’” she said.

November 2023: Donna Kelce says Travis Kelce is ‘happier than I’ve seen him in a long time’

Just weeks after her appearance on TODAY, Donna Kelce spoke more openly about her son’s budding romance in a WSJ Magazine article.

Travis Kelce told the publication that his mom was upset with how she handled the question during her interview with TODAY, but said he quickly reassured her that she did a great job.

In the WSJ Magazine article, Donna Kelce spoke about how happy Swift had made her son.

“I can tell you this,” she said. “He’s happier than I’ve seen him in a long time … God bless him, he shot for the stars!”

November 2023: Donna Kelce praises Taylor Swift’s concert film

In an interview with People in November 2023, Donna Kelce said she had recently seen Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert film.

“I did see it and I did like it. It was awesome,” she said.

Mama Kelce described Swift as “extremely, extremely talented” and said she “was just totally enthralled” with her while watching the film. She also called out the singer’s “presence to be able to connect with people.”

February 2024: Donna Kelce says she has a ‘few’ selfies with Taylor

After the Chiefs won the AFC championship, Donna Kelce updated her Facebook cover photo to a group shot that included Swift. While chatting with TODAY just days before the Super Bowl, she explained why she added the photo to her account.

“That was a picture where all of us were so excited that were in the suite. And we were so excited that they made it to the Super Bowl that we just took a shot of everybody that was there. So it wasn’t anything calculating or anything like that,” she said. “It just was everybody that was supporting my son and I was so happy to put that picture on Facebook.”

Donna Kelce added that she has gotten “a few” selfies with Swift “here and there” since the singer started dating her younger son.

When asked if she’d be sitting with Swift in a private box at the Super Bowl, Donna Kelce said she wasn’t sure of her plans.

“You can understand that the boxes in Vegas are multimillion dollars, so I have a feeling I’m not in a box,” she said. “I have a feeling I am in the stands. As far as I know, I’m in the stands with everybody else because it is a pricey Super Bowl.”

In the end, the fast friends did end up sitting together.
