LeBron James is transcendent, but it may never be enough: Arthur

    james

LeBron James is a generational talent, of that there is no doubt. But in these NBA Finals, he’s run into Steph Curry and the Warriors, and things aren’t looking good for James and the Cavs.

Imagine, for a moment, being LeBron James. The first thing you would want to do is you run around a gym, fly in the air, contort this insane six-foot-eight, 260-pound aircraft carrier of a body. Holy, this thing. This body was made for basketball, and it would have been a crime to have broken it on a football field. Your basketball mind may be the best in the game. You can decode anything. You are so good you have gotten to choose your team in the NBA, and you can almost do anything, although free throws are a problem. Jump shots, too. You lost confidence in those, at some point. But right now, you have bigger worries.

If you are LeBron James, you are probably tired. You have played 123 playoff games in the last six years, a season-and-a-half of extra time, plus an Olympics. You have played 39 minutes per game over your 13-year career, the highest number of any active player. You have played almost as many career minutes — regular season and post-season —as Bill Russell or Michael Jordan ever did. You were on the cover of Sports Illustrated when you were 17. A shortened version of the headline, The Chosen One, is tattooed across your wide shoulders. You have two championships to show for all this, but you must be at least a little tired.

But right now you can’t be tired. After two games of the NBA Finals, everything the Golden State Warriors does is easy. Steph Curry has 29 points in two games and Klay Thomson has 26 and the games have not been close. The matchups are bad. Golden State makes Cleveland look the way Cleveland made the Raptors look. The last 12 times these teams have played Cleveland has won three, and has been outscored by an average of 11.5 points per game. Golden State won a record 73 games in the West, and is building a case as the best basketball team of all-time.

From the post-game transcript after Game 2:

Q: Draymond, do you think this defensive performance puts you guys or solidifies you guys as one of the best teams of all time?

Draymond Green: No, we’ve got two more wins before you can even consider saying that. I don’t really look at, ‘Are you the best team of all time, are we the best team of all time?’ Because I think it’s all subjective. To say we’re better than the Showtime Lakers, how can you say that? We never played them.

Klay Thompson: We are better than the Showtime Lakers.

Draymond Green: Like saying we’re better than the Bulls, it’s like we’ll never play them. It’s two completely different eras. So I don’t really get off on the, ‘Are you the best team of all time?’ I’m trying to win rings, and that’s (the) only goal. Everybody else can decide what they want to decide on who is the best team of all-time, who is not.

Thompson’s dad Mychal played for the Showtime Lakers, but circle to Green’s second answer. There’s no way to determine whether Michael Jordan was truly better than LeBron James. Or Oscar Robertson. Or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. We can compare numbers, memories, eras, context, and titles. LeBron James And His Legacy is a game we play every year, sometimes every game. It is exhausting and fun and a little ridiculous. Before the series began Jerry West, who went 1-8 in the Finals and who works for Golden State, told reporters, “He’s carried teams on his shoulders. He’s been to the Finals six straight times. How many times has he been the favourite? None. Zero. Grossly unfair to him.

“I don’t want to sound like Donald Trump, but it’s hard for me to believe someone doesn’t recognize his greatness. This guy does everything, and he’s competitive as hell. Frankly, I wish people would leave him alone.”

And LeBron said, “I don’t really get involved into the whole pressure thing. I think I’ve exceeded expectations in my life as a professional. I’m a statistic that was supposed to go the other way, growing up in the inner city, having a single-parent household. It was just me and my mother. So everything I’ve done has been a success. So as far as the game of basketball, I just go out and play it and have fun and love it, and be true to the game and to my teammates and live with the results. So I don’t — doesn’t really get to me too much.”

But there are people in Cleveland and Miami who both say you wanted to win before you went to South Beach, and were obsessed by it afterwards. And barring one hell of a switch, you are headed for 2-5 in the Finals, and some people forget that the first time your wingmen were Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden. Some people will laugh and ignore that this year there are four guys in Cleveland’s starting lineup a good offence can exploit.

You chose this team, though. That’s the trap. You are LeBron James, and you are running up against a power bigger than yourself, and you have to wonder if you will ever win a title again. You can play better. You have played better. You are the defining player of your generation. It may never be enough.

  • LeBron James Disappears For Miami In Game 4, And Everything We Learned Was A Lie

    Getty Images

“What the hell happened to LeBron James?” said everyone after the Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.

Playoff games are supposed to provide definitive answers, not leave us with more questions than ever. And yet, with the Heat looking like the better team through most of the game, the Mavericks tied the NBA Finals at two games apiece Tuesday night. Right back to where we started. It’s a three game series now, and it makes no sense.

Especially with Dirk Nowitzki playing with a 100-degree fever and looking like a complete mess for most of the game, the Mavs had no business winning on Tuesday. Every time Dallas made a shot, it felt like some grand triumph. Every time Miami scored, it felt like the beginning of an avalanche.

That dynamic describes the series in general. When Dallas wins a game, we pinch ourselves and say, “Do you believe in miracles?” When Miami wins, we shrug our shoulders and say, “This isn’t magic, the Heat are just the better team.” But the avalanche we’ve been waiting for hasn’t happened yet. Which brings us back to LeBron.

Every day it seems like there’s a new referendum on LeBron James. Just look at the NBA Finals. First there was Game 1, where he and Dwyane Wade looked unstoppable, and a title (or three) looked inevitable. Then Game 2, when he disappeared in the fourth quarter while Nowitzki took control and led one of the greatest comebacks in Finals history. In a matter of days, LeBron went from G.O.A.T. to goat.

Then Game 3, when LeBron played lockdown defense throughout the fourth quarter, threw a perfect behind-the-back pass to Chris Bosh for the win, and a reporter asked him in the postgame press conference whether he was shrinking from the moment. Cue the referendum again. “He’s doesn’t have to be a scorer to be dominant,” most folks agreed. “Did you watch him on defense? Did you see the game-winning pass? Anybody can see how good he is.” Back to the G.O.A.T. Every time we think we’ve learned something about LeBron, the conversation changes.

All this back-and-forth may seem like a curse, but if anything, it’s a testament to LeBron’s gifts. A lot of folks nitpick the guy just because of The Decsion, but ultimately, basketball fans agonize over this stuff because there are only a handful of players with the chance to be this great. People don’t spend hours debating Chris Bosh’s legacy. LeBron gets the attention for a reason.

The debates will always rage about whether he’s shrinking for the moment or delivering in a different way. You can’t talk about LeBron James without measuring against the greatest players ever to play the game, because measuring him against his peers is just beside the point. So we ask ourselves. Is he a more athletic Larry Bird? Could he be better than MJ? Or is he a more talented Vince Carter?

And just when you thought the scale was narrowing for LeBron–he’ll either be better than MJ and Bird or every bit as good–the NBA Finals have given everyone pause. Now we’re back to square one, wondering how, exactly, a player can be as dominant as LeBron was in that Chicago series and as invisible as he was in Game 4.

Let’s be clear: He didn’t just “shrink” from the moment on Tuesday. He shriveled and then disappeared. He shot 3-11 and had just 8 points, and he was invisible in the final minutes. “I’ve got to do a better job of being more assertive,” he said afterward. Um, yeah. Assertive at all would be a start. You don’t win Finals games flopping like this. At best, he settled for a long, contested jumpers. More often, he just refused to attack at all, deferring to Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh.

“I definitely didn’t play great offensively,” he added afterward.

…Or defensively. While he pulled a disappearing act on offense, Jason Terry made a fool of him on defense, and again, King James just looked frozen. Just watch Dirk Nowitzki’s game-winning lay-up, where LeBron literally doesn’t move as he stares at Dirk winning the game.

    It’s all kind of incredible.

This is the same guy who prompted me to call him the best player on earth two weeks ago. “He’s hit all the shots great players are supposed to hit, and then some. He’s been so good that he’s got an incomplete Miami roster one win away from the NBA Finals. He can shut down anyone in the league on defense, and on offense, he just went for 35 points against the best defense in the league.” He can also have games like Tuesday, apparently.

“Maybe this is all premature,” I wrote then. “Lord knows we’ve had about five false starts with the LeBron Era in the past.” And now here we are. Dirk Nowitzki’s outscored LeBron James 44-9 in the fourth quarter of the NBA Finals, and the series is (somehow) tied.

It’s one thing to have a bad game on a big stage, but Tuesday’s display was more like surrender. It left us speechless for all the wrong reasons. How can someone that good be so incredibly irrelevant?

    “What even… Did something happen?”

The greatest players in NBA History have always boggled our minds the way LeBron did against Chicago. But there’s another kind of player that’s just as incredible. Guys like Vince Carter, who have more talent than seems humanly possible, but somehow find a way to squander it. Whether they don’t care enough, they don’t work enough, or they’re not tough enough. They never quite capitalize on the opportunity.

Where LeBron falls on that spectrum is up to him, and a lot comes down to what happens in the next three games of the NBA Finals. So we’re back to where we started. Everything we learned in that Bulls series is meaningless now, and even Game 1 seems like weeks ago. But while thousands of words get spilled about his legacy today, Game 5 is just a day away.

Who knows whether he can take control of this series and his legacy all at the same time. The opportunity’s still there, and now he can try to capitalize. But really… that’s the thing.

Tuesday, he didn’t even seem to try. In sports, that’s the worst legacy of all.

Lakers’ LeBron James drops motivational take on work ethic after huge outing vs. Clippers

Anthony Davis looking at LeBron James and Clippers coach Ty Lue looking at leBron.

The Los Angeles Lakers somehow defeated the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday in a magical performance by LeBron James. Despite being down by 21 in the fourth quarter, James put the team on his back and the Lakers walked away with a 116-112 victory. After the game, Anthony Davis admitted that James went ‘sicko mode’ and then he spoke at great depth about his work ethic (h/t Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints):

“I think you’ll only get out of the game as much as you put into it. I’ve always wanted to be one of the greatest to ever play this game. I knew I was born with some gifts and athletic abilities, but that only gets you so far…Just put the work in.”

“I think you’ll only get out of the game as much as you put into it.” I’ve always wanted to be one of the greatest to ever play this game. I knew i was born with som gifts and athletic abilities, but that only gets you so far.” LeBron James on his work ethic and drive to improve…

James’ work certainly paid off in an all-time comeback by the legend. He scored 19 points with five three-pointers in the final quarter, outscoring the Clippers by himself (they scored 16 in the quarter). Magic Johnson was sure thrilled with LeBron’s performance, and fans quickly took to social media to celebrate a magnificent showing by number 23.

James finished the game with 34 points, eight assists and six rebounds on 13-21 from the field and seven three-pointers. All five Lakers starters finished with double figures, and the Lakers moved to 32-28 on the season.

For a guy who has been playing at a high level for two decades, the work ethic for LeBron James has certainly paid off, even at his age. The Lakers are right back at it on Thursday night against the Washington Wizards.

  • LeBron James pretends he couldn’t get into bars until he was 21

LeBron James pretends he couldn’t get into bars until he was 21

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers at Sacramento Kings

LeBron James turned 33 yesterday, and when asked about whether he had a favorite birthday so far, he had this to say

“I don’t know, to be honest,” he said. “Eighteen is always cool. You have this false notion that you’re a grown man, and you turn 18, and you’re actually not. But you have this false notion. I turned 18 during my senior year, and I was like, ‘Manhood now, I’m ready.’ I was nowhere near ready for that.

“Eighteen was good; 21 was cool. People had known my story for so long. There was always certain clubs and stuff I used to go to, and they were like, ‘Come on, bro, we know you’re not 21. We cannot let you in here and mess up our liquor license.’ So 21 was pretty cool too, especially when I went to Vegas, because I was playing USA Basketball so much.

“When I turned 21 and I went to Vegas that summer, I was like, ‘I’m back,’ and I was so happy to show my [ID] card to ’em. I was like ‘Bow!’ with my ID. I’m like, ‘I’m 21, let me up in here. I’m up in here.’ Those were a couple good ones.”

Oh, I’m suuuuure that clubs in Akron and Cleveland were being very careful about maintaining their liquor licenses by barring LeBron freaking James at the door. If I know one thing about bars, it’s that their standards become famously lax when a famous person or a group of attractive women are in line to get in.

And that joke doesn’t even hold up, because there’s no way LeBron even had to wait in line!LeBron James Had to Carry Cavaliers in NBA Finals

That’s not to say LeBron wasn’t ever denied – I’m sure there was a tryhard bouncer out there that was ready to die for the honor of his profession, but as it stands, there’s almost no way that James didn’t waltz into just about whatever club or bar he wanted to.

  • The Lakers’ Front Office Should Learn Many Important Things From The Series Between The Wolves/Nuggets

The Lakers’ Front Office Should Learn Many Important Things From The Series Between The Wolves/Nuggets

The series between Wolves and Nuggets demonstrated the power of maintaining high morale during a hiatus. The Lakers should learn how Wolves and Nuggets maintain a strong and patient spirit, even when they face great pressure.

One of the important lessons the Lakers can learn from this series is the importance of cultivating diversity in play. Wolves and Nuggets have shown flexibility and variety in the way they attack and defend, which gives them confidence and effectiveness in all situations.

Adverse situations can occur at any time during a match, and connection and trust within the team are important factors in overcoming those challenges. The Lakers should learn how Wolves and Nuggets maintain connection and trust within their teams, even when they face great pressure and adverse situations.

In dramatic matches, time management and pressure are factors that determine success or failure. Wolves and Nuggets demonstrated their ability to manage time and pressure effectively during key moments of the match. The Lakers should learn and improve their ability to manage time and pressure in important matches.

Ultimately, the Wolves and Nuggets showed that patience and determination are indispensable in achieving success. Despite facing difficulties and challenges, both teams never gave up and remained patient and determined until the end. The Lakers should also learn this lesson and apply it to how they approach future games.

King and Queen James Dazzle in Divergent Hues at ‘Shooting Stars’ Premiere

LeBron James and his wife, Savannah James, showed out for the Los Angeles premiere of his upcoming film “Shooting Stars” on Wednesday wearing outfits that were contrasting in hue.

LeBron James wore a white crewneck T-shirt underneath his double-breasted cream suit. He accessorized his suit with white sneakers, sunglasses, and a basketball lapel pendant.

Savannah, his spouse, wore an Oscar de la Renta ensemble in black, from the helmet to the toes, which contrasted with his cream-colored suit. Matching pants and a black jacket with flower embroidery on the lace completed the look, along with black Gianvitto Rossi slingback pumps.

To create her look for the premiere, Savannah worked with stylist Casey “Icon” Billingsley, who also styles Jhene Aiko, Amber Riley, and Coco Jones.

Billingsley and Savannah have been working together since 2021. She created the stunning white mermaid dress that Sergio Hudson designed for this year’s Vanity Fair Oscars.

Billingsley and Savannah have worked together on a variety of looks, such as Savannah’s iconic Schiaparelli pinstripe suit moment on February 7 during LeBron James’s NBA record-breaking game where he broke all previous scoring records.

The socialite dissipated earlier this year at Milan Fashion Week while wearing an all-black lacy catsuit.

LeBron James’s latest movie, “Shooting Stars,” draws inspiration from the book he and Buzz Bissinger co-wrote. The movie tells the story of the high school friendships that helped LeBron James stay together while he was a student at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, the school where he would go on to become a basketball legend. On Friday, Peacock will start showing the movie. Khalil Everage plays Marquis Sian Cotton. Caleb McLaughlin plays Little Dru, Wood Harris plays Dru Joyce, and Mookie Cook plays a young LeBron James.
