LeBron James shocked audiences with a fakeout at the 2023 ESPY Awards.

The Los Angeles Lakers star, 38, took the stage to be recognized as the leading scorer in NBA history, after breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record in February.

James started out by thanking his wife Savannah James and noting how proud he was of his teenage sons LeBron “Bronny” James Jr., 18, and Bryce Maximus, 16, before discussing his future in the NBA.

“When the season ended, I said I wasn’t sure if I was gonna keep playing,” he said. “And I know a lot of experts told you guys what I said, but I’m here now speaking for myself. In that moment, I kept asking myself if I could still play without cheating the game.”

“Can I give everything to the game still?,” he continued. “Truth is I’m gonna ask myself this question at the end of the season for a couple of years now. I just never openly talk about it.”

“The day I can’t give the game everything on the floor, is the day I’ll be done,” he said before a long pause.

The athlete left everyone on the edge of their seats waiting to see whether he would announce his retirement.

“Lucky for you guys, that day is not today,” he said with a smile, as the audience applauded.

He added that watching his sons play ball with their coaches and teammates “brings me back every year.”

“I see those kids and it brings me right back to where I play,” he said. Those kids get me back to where need to be… But yeah, I still got something left. A lot left.”

The recognition for James also brought another memorable moment from the night as his wife gave him an unforgettable introduction before he made his speech.

“I decided, I wanna tell you what I think. LeBron James is the baddest mother—,” Savannah said, before their daughter Zhuri, 8, stopped her, leading to big laughs from the audience.

She then clarified her words, “I think LeBron James is the baddest to ever set foot on a basketball court. Nobody works harder. Nobody cares more and nobody has done more for the game of basketball.”

LeBron James is going to take some time away from the court to decide where — and even if — he will play his 22nd NBA season. The Lakers were back in the news with Friday’s firing of coach Darvin Ham after two seasons. Who general manager Rob Pelinka tabs to replace Ham could also weigh heavily on James’ decision. James could choose to become a free agent, or he could decide to pick up his $51.4 million player option for the final year of his current contract. At 39, he could even opt to retire. The Lakers are the -500 favorite at DraftKings to be the team James begins the 2024-25 season with, but the sportsbook is also offering odds on nine other potential NBA destinations. I know one of them was during the in-season tournament, we got whole and we showed what we (are) capable of doing. “But we were just hit with injuries after injuries after injuries, and it’s just hard to come back from that.”

 

CLEVELAND — 

LeBron James’ weekend back in Northeast Ohio exposed all kinds of truths, with the realization of just how much trouble the Lakers are in near the top of that list.

James, an expert at using both subtle and obvious ways of putting pressure on his teams to make changes, seemed to poke at the Lakers throughout his All-Star experience. His comments about Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti had to be viewed against current Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka’s inability to find a move at the trade deadline.

And James’ admission to the Athletic’s Jason Lloyd that he hadn’t closed the door on a return to Cleveland and that he’d be spending the end of his career playing alongside his son, Bronny, were the kinds of comments the Lakers need to take seriously.

Under contract with the team for just one more season, James has sent a strong message — let’s get better and let’s do it quickly.

The trouble, of course, is that James played a large role in putting together this flawed roster. And secondarily, the pathways for the Lakers to do things differently in the upcoming offseason are still fairly limited.

Pelinka, sitting courtside Sunday during the All-Star game, couldn’t have missed what was transpiring in front of him. While the ability of the Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry to dominate a game has mostly been unchanged over the last decade, a new crop of All-Stars are making the NBA even younger, more athletic and more dangerous.

Pelinka’s team has struggled to compete with the Memphis Grizzlies and Ja Morant, the first-time All-Star comfortably sliding into a spot as one of the league’s most exciting stars.

Videos of a very boozed-up Morant traveling to Cleveland went viral, with the third-year guard stealing the show Saturday by unapologetically using his first All-Star game as an excuse to have as much fun as possible.

“Where I’m from, [it doesn’t] happen often that people make it out and be able to put on for the city in the right way,” Morant said. “I had the opportunity, and I’m just living it out right now. I normally sit and think about stuff like that when I’m by myself. I don’t like being too emotional or anything around people.

“So I can say that’s pretty much why I was lit on the flight. On the way there, you know, I feel like that’s when it hit me that I actually made All-Star, and it was only right that I celebrate it.”

And as Morant’s star grows, the Grizzlies will only become more dangerous — the kind of team the Lakers (27-31 and in ninth place in the Western Conference) could see in the early stages of the playoffs if they’re able to make it to — and through — the play-in tournament.

And then there are last year’s finalists, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns. While people, at times, dismissed last year’s successes as fluky during a season defined by injuries and the pandemic, they both have to be considered among the biggest favorites to win their conferences again.

James talked Sunday about the responsibility of being the face of the league. It sure seemed like the Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo would be comfortable in that role — he and his brothers participating Saturday night before he was one of the biggest stars Sunday.

While Chris Paul’s thumb injury puts some doubt on the Suns’ immediate fortunes, those teams have successfully surrounded their biggest stars with the right players — a combination of roster building through the draft, free agency and trades.

The path forward for the Lakers will require tremendous creativity. Perhaps there’s a palatable trade to be made this summer when the team can deal Russell Westbrook with a pair of first-round picks for players they view as a better fit.

And maybe they can strike gold with some minimum signings like they did with Malik Monk (though retaining him will be difficult).

But it seems clear that James won’t accept failure — and the Lakers, employers of an impatient superstar, are going to be expected to act.

And it’s not going to matter to him that the odds and options to catch the best in the NBA are bad.

LeBron James is likely to make history during the 2022-23 season, officially passing Los Angeles Lakers icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

James already has more career points than Abdul-Jabbar when both regular-season and playoff tallies are taken into account. However, the 37-year-old needs 1,326 points to break the great center’s legendary scoring record in the regular season (38,387), which has been in place for over 30 years.

During Lakers Media Day on Monday, James said he only thinks about reaching the milestone when he finds a post on social media that breaks down how many games he might need to move past Abdul-Jabbar on the all-time scoring list. But, the 18-time All-Star added, those moments make him realize how special feat he is about to achieve.

“To know that I’m on the verge of breaking probably the most sought-after record in the NBA, things that people say would probably never be done, I think it’s just super humbling for myself,” James said. “I think it’s super cool.”

James said that hearing his name being mentioned in the same category as the best players the NBA has ever seen brings back poignant memories from his childhood, when he walked around Akron, Ohio, shooting the ball through the hoop — real or imaginary one.

“Obviously Kareem has had his differences with some of my views and some of the things that I do, but at the end of the day, to be able to be recognized in the same breath as a guy who wore the same uniform, a guy that was a staple of this franchise along with Magic and Big Game over there for so many years, especially in the ‘80s, and a guy that does a lot off the floor as well — I think it’s just super duper dope for myself to be even in that conversation.

“Anytime my name is mentioned with the greats — obviously Wilt, M.J. or now Kareem or whatever the case might be — it’s just super humbling. As always see me use my hashtag, #TheKidFromAkron, those are the moments where I really think about that kid from Akron walking those streets and, you know, playing basketball where I actually had a basketball on the hoop or just walking around and air dribbling, and shooting through an invisible hoop, counting ‘Five, four, three, two, one’ and making game-winning shots.

“When I get here — I’m not going to put too much pressure on it throughout the season — but I think it’s a pretty historical moment it gets here and as long as my family and friends are all there, that’s the most important thing.”

When should James break Abdul-Jabbar’s record

In case this post makes James’ social media feeds, let’s calculate how many games the Lakers All-Star might need to break Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record.

James averages 27.1 points per game going into his 20th NBA season. If he was to score at that rate in 2021-22, he would only need 48 games to reach the milestone.

Therefore, James might be able to officially celebrate the historic moment before the All-Star break if he can avoid injuries in the first part of the 2022-23 season.

 LeBron James reached 40,000 points Saturday night, still going strong in his 21st NBA season as he tries to put the career scoring record out of reach.

James drove past Michael Porter Jr. and hit a layup with 10:39 left in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 124-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets for the historic basket.

“Being the first player to do something, it’s pretty cool in this league, just knowing the history, the greats that’s come through the league, and then you see some of the greats on the floor tonight, it was great to compete,” James said. “But for me, the main thing, as always, is to win, and I hated that it had to happen in a defeat.”

James did it in 1,475 regular-season games, reaching double-digit points in each of the last 1,205 of them. He has largely avoided major injuries in that time, while also playing another 3 1/2 seasons worth of games in the playoffs en route to four titles in 10 NBA Finals appearances, all with unfathomable pressure placed on him to be the next transcendent player before ever stepping on the court as a professional.

“For the first time in a long time, I’ve seen the commercial that was played before my first game,” James said. “I think they mentioned all the greats to ever play the game of basketball, like Big O and Michael and Kareem and Kobe, and forgot who all else was in that commercial. And then it was like, ‘the next one, LeBron James.’

“I didn’t see that commercial when it happened, but when I was watching it today, I was like what the hell? That expectation on an 18-year-old kid like that, that was insane to think about.”

Even with those expectations, James put in the work and has now accomplished something that seemed impossible.

James’ relentless march saw him pass the previous record of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points on Feb. 7, 2023 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

All that scoring happened without James’ necessarily wanting that to be his trademark. He is fourth in career assists with 10,847, picking up another nine against Denver, and his average of 7.35 per game ranks in the top 25.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone, who spent five seasons with James as an assistant for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-2010, saw an early dedication from James in all areas. It was already a priority for James to keep himself in peak physical condition, even if the run to the scoring title was an unforeseen outcome back them.

“I remember being in Cleveland, him being in the weight room with our weight and strength coaches, and there’s no way he’s doing what he’s doing at this stage of his career if he is not putting a ton of time into his body, his diet, his sleep, all those things that really matter,” Malone said before the game.

James’ combination of longevity and sustained excellence is what makes it entirely likely he could be the only player to ever reach 40,000 points.

To put the feat in perspective, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic will need to average 25 points over his next 1,057 appearances to join James at 40,000 points. That would be nearly 13 full seasons without injuries or any other unforeseen circumstance, all the way past age 41 without a drop in production for the two-time MVP.

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic seems like the most reasonable candidate to make a serious push, as his career average of 28.51 points per game is third in league history behind Michael Jordan (30.12) and Wilt Chamberlain (30.07). But Doncic will need to keep it up for 1,022 more games to match James, a timeline pushing into the 2036-37 season barring interruption.

“There’s just certain things that you just don’t think that’s going to happen,” James said. “I guess for years people said Kareem’s record wouldn’t be broken. I was able to eclipse it. But like I said, you have to have some really good luck, you have to play the game at a high level for a long time, and then we see.”

As to whether James might ever take up residence in the 50,000-point club, a conservative estimate of 25 points per game from here on out — essentially matching what he has been producing in his 21st professional campaign at 39-years-old — while playing 55 outings each coming season would put him at the doorstep in 2031-32.

Malone wouldn’t rule it out.

“Really, when you take a step back, you just have to marvel at the longevity. But he’s just not playing at this. He is playing effectively,” Malone said. “I’m sure for him, that’ll be his decision down the road probably in five, six years. ‘Am I still playing effectively?’ And he is.”

If anyone would even dare to make a charge at the impossible, it could only be King James.

“I come to work and prepare and prep, mentally, physically, spiritually every single night when it’s time to play, and I just try to go out and contribute,” he said. “Been able to do it for 20-plus years, including this year. When I come on the floor and feel pretty good, I feel I can make plays.

“Still able to do the things that I was doing 10 years ago. And some things I was doing 20 years ago, which is weird to say.”
