NBA: Luka Doncic scores 73 points as Dallas Mavericks beat Atlanta Hawks 148-143

Luka Doncic matched the fourth-highest scoring output in NBA history with 73 points as the Dallas Mavericks conquered the Atlanta Hawks. The 24-year-old from Slovenia surpassed the Mavericks’ previous record of 60 points he achieved against the New York Knicks in 2022. Only the iconic Wilt Chamberlain (100 and 78) and Kobe Bryant (78) have scored more in the NBA’s 77-year history. “It was truly exhilarating. At times, I couldn’t believe it,” Doncic expressed following the Mavericks’ 148-143 triumph. Doncic also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists. He made 25 of his 33 field-goal attempts, including eight three-pointers and connecting on 15 of his 16 free throws

Chamberlain also hit scores of 73 in 1962, and David Thompson matched the mark in 1978. Doncic became the 10th player in NBA history to reach the 70-point milestone after Joel Embiid surpassed the Philadelphia 76ers’ franchise record on Monday. This performance represents the highest-scoring game since Lakers icon Kobe Bryant scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Chamberlain’s historic 100-point game occurred in 1962 against the New York Knicks. According to Doncic, this game is “probably at the top” of his career, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash.

“We all adored Kobe. It feels remarkable to be mentioned alongside those names,” Doncic added.()

Doncic’s remarkable showing helped the Mavericks break a three-game losing streak, earning praise from head coach Jason Kidd. Kidd remarked, “His ability to score, create opportunities, and find open teammates was exceptional tonight. We must value him and not take him for granted. Every night, he showcases something special.”
