An NFL insider suggested Tuesday the Philadelphia Eagles could make another major transition this offseason by trading quarterback Jalen Hurts. The idea comes at a time when the Eagles are reshaping the coaching staff for the 2024 season.

The Eagles are expected to have a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator next season. However, after losing six of their last seven games, the Eagles will keep head coach Nick Sirianni.

The Philadelphia Eagles had a loud locker room

Ugly reports came out of the Eagles’ locker room during that losing stretch. As touched before by GH Media, a source came out and questioned Hurts’ leadership style in late December:

According to Jeff McLane with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles teammates are frustrated with how Hurts has handled the leadership duties in the locker room this season:

“Clearly, Hurts has so many of the intangibles to be an elite quarterback: passing and running abilities, a genuine work ethic, and a willingness to do everything it takes to be the best. But team sources said the Eagles want their franchise quarterback to open himself up a little more in the locker room.

Players like and respect Hurts. The team doesn’t have to worry about him off the field. The Eagles want him to be authentic to himself, but they also need him to not isolate himself as much when a more outward leadership style is necessary, especially when the going gets tough.”

That wasn’t the only rumbling coming out of the Eagles camp this winter. Wide receiver A.J. Brown held a players-only meeting to discuss the team’s problems.

Jalen Hurts’ contract is trade-friendly

Mike Florio with NBC Sports thinks there was a “general dysfunction” in the locker room in December and January. Hurts’ contract is relatively benign for a trade deal to take place:

While there’s no specific reason to believe the Eagles or Hurts are ready for a fresh start, the general sense of dysfunction within the locker room seemed palpable toward the end of the season. It feels like something big happened, something we don’t know about. Something we might never know about. Whatever it was/is could be enough, in theory, to make the team or the player interested in making a change.

Unlike many high-end quarterback contracts, Hurts’ deal makes it fairly simple — if the Eagles want to do it (and if Hurts will waive his no-trade clause for it).

He has been paid $24.3 million so far. The cap hit for a pre-June 1 trade would be only $18.632 million for 2024. He’d then be off the books for 2025.

Would the Eagles trade Hurts?

The Eagles might want to trade Hurts. Hurts might want out of Philadelphia. Again, there’s no reason to think that is the case one season after making the Super Bowl.

But who would the Eagles have under center if they traded Hurts? If those teams are interested, the Eagles could trade with the Chicago Bears or New England Patriots for their number one or three pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

They could trade for Bears quarterback Justin Fields if Chicago wants to keep the first pick for a quarterback.

The Eagles will pick 22nd overall in April’s draft. The top quarterback prospects for the draft will be gone by then. It’s hard to think the Eagles will trade Hurts with Sirianni on the hot seat unless they have a chance to land a solid replacement.
