MAX VERSTAPPEN could have breached the terms of his Red Bull contract – by going skiing.

The F1 world champion spent time on the slopes between the Australian GP, where he was forced to retire with a brake problem, and this week’s Japanese GP.

The three-time world champion was forced to end his race early in Melbourne due to a brake failure, allowing Carlos Sainz – who had already passed him on track – to claim the eventual race win.

With no race last weekend, Verstappen has had time to relax – but may have landed himself in hot water after his winter sports trip.

The 26-year-old has a dangerous sports clause inserted in his £43m a year deal at Red Bull to prevent him from the risk of getting injured.

And that is understood to include skiing – although that did not stop him according to Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko.

Mario and Michael Andretti have been vocal of fielding their team on the F1 grid for a long time but unfortunately, F1 rejected their advances earlier this year. Refusing to take no for an answer however, Mario has reached out to the US Congress to help him fulfill his F1 dream.

Andretti received heavy backlash from other teams when they expressed their desire to enter the paddock. Still, they went ahead with the registration process  and in October 2023, the FIA deemed them fit to participate. However, the final approval which was pending from Formula One Management (FOM), was rejected in February 2024.

F1 and the teams felt that Andretti didn’t guarantee the addition of enough value. This shut down the possibility of them joining the grid until at least 2026, or so they thought. Ahead of the 2024 Miami GP weekend, NBC’s Jake Sherman reports that Mario Andretti was at the US Congress, talking to lawmakers about his bid to enter F1.

The particulars of the discussions between Andretti and these lawmakers are yet to be disclosed. However, given the sensitive commercial nature of the proposition and Liberty Media (F1’s owners) being American, it is being speculated that the 84-year-old is concerned about the Anti-Trust/Anti-Competition aspects of FOM’s decision to reject his bid.

Andretti’s push for a place on the F1 grid is a testament to their continued commitment to the F1 World Championship. Despite not getting a formal green signal from the sport, the team has already started investing heavily in infrastructure.

F1 has not completely closed the doors on Andretti’s venture. The main argument put forth by the sport was that, by being Renault’s customer team, they didn’t see the American outfit making the necessary waves to justify their commercial benefits. On the other hand, a full works Andretti outfit could be welcomed into the sport with open arms.

Nothing about the same is official or has been confirmed yet. Andretti’s entry remains doubtful but behind the scenes, work rages on. Mario Andretti, a former F1 World Champion himself, believes in their vision of being on the grid sooner or later. The very first step taken in that respect was choosing a base in the United Kingdom.

Last month, Andretti opened a new facility in Silverstone, close to where current F1 team Aston Martin is based. They have also gone on an aggressive recruitment spree, and their career page now boasts 60 vacancies at their Silverstone facilities.

Niki Lauda once told me that for Ferrari to function at their best the team required some English blood in its veins. ‘Italians are all about romance and spaghetti, and on their own that’s not enough,’ he rasped in his typically forthright manner that would have the woke commissars reaching for smelling salts.

Which brings us to the subject of Lewis Hamilton and Formula One’s all-time supreme designer.

We know that Hamilton is joining the Scuderia next year, and we suspect Newey is at the very least contemplating doing the same, his departure from Red Bull now having been confirmed. He is being released early from his contract and has the freedom to guide a new team’s development in light of the incoming 2026 regulation revamp, the details of which will be out later this year.

 

He leaves Red Bull next spring and is a free agent. Strangely, he will still attend races meanwhile, perhaps 10, though some computer access was shut down the moment his impending departure was made known.

The fact he will still be travelling abroad is no doubt out of respect for all he has contributed to the team as it leading boffin, and a man of courtesy, across 20 years. Anyone else would have been placed on gardening leave pronto.

The Red Bull ace was quickest at Suzuka and edged out his team-mate Sergio Perez and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who were second and third respectively.

Verstappen, 26, had dominated qualifying but a late surge from Perez saw him close the gap to within 0.066 seconds.

Hamilton qualified in seventh – the first time he has outdone team-mate George Russell this season – but said he was still encouraged by his team’s progress after telling them not to “eff it up”.

He said: “I was giving it everything.

“The team did a really great job this past week making adjustments to our set-up – this is actually the first weekend I’ve not gone crazy with set-up and am not testing a bunch of things, so I’m back to a bit more normal.
