Jason Kelce will be ‘tough’ to replace in Eagles locker room, says Andy Reid, as the Chiefs head coach opens up on watching the legendary center and ‘tremendous’ brother Travis grow

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid insisted his former player Jason Kelce will be hard to replace in the Philadelphia Eagles‘ locker room.

Kelce, 36, announced his retirement from the NFL earlier this month, bringing the curtain down on a 13-year career with the Eagles.

The legendary center, who spent all 13 seasons in Philadelphia, was a big presence in the Eagles’ locker room.

Reid, who drafted Kelce in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL draft while he was still head coach in Philadelphia, claimed Kelce’s leadership will be hard to replicate.

‘It’s tough for a couple of reasons,’ he told Sports Radio WIP. ‘I don’t know who’s coming up behind him but he had a big voice in there.

‘Not only was he a great player but he also had the leadership. He did it on the field, he also did it off the field, which was important. All those guys keeping everybody in line is a big thing. I’m sure they have other guys who can work in there.

‘I haven’t studied their roster enough, but the younger you are, the tougher it is. Although he seemed to do it when he came in. He kinda took over things right away.’

The 66-year-old coached Kelce for only two years before he was fired by Philadelphia and became the head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

In Kansas City, Reid drafted Kelce’s younger brother, Travis Kelce, in the third round of the 2013 draft.

The coach has gone on to win three Super Bowls with Travis and the Chiefs, including the past two years.

And Reid opened up on his relationship with the entire Kelce family as he expressed his pride in the retired NFL veteran.

‘That family, I’ve become close with it,’ he said, via Zach Berman. ‘Between Travis and then Jason, I’ve watched both guys grow. Tremendous players, and Jason is a great leader — emotional player, brings that to the table, and has done so for a long time. 13 years? That’s a long time. My hat goes off to him.

‘He’s going out on top as a player, an All-Pro player. Could he have played a couple more years? Probably. But that body, it’s taken a lot of pounding. And he’s got a nice little gig going now.

‘But listen, I’m proud — I love the kid, and I’m proud of him for making that decision. Whatever he does, he’s going to do great at.’

Jason okayed a big role in convincing Reid to draft his younger brother after the head coach held his reservations over the tight end.

The coach was convinced of his on-field ability but Travis’s season-long suspension from the University of Cincinnati team for multiple positive marijuana tests was a sticking point.

But Travis’s big brother Jason, who was also drafted by Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles, played an instrumental role in convincing the veteran coach to take a chance on his brother.

The center said Reid called him shortly before the draft to ask if he could take a shot on the younger Kelce.

‘I felt like he was asking me in the moment, “You realize I’m taking this shot on him. I want to make sure this works out,”’ Jason told ESPN.

    Jason Kelce

Throughout his long career with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jason Kelce not only had a legendary career on the field, but he became an important leader for the team in the locker room. But as he now retires from the game, he’ll leave a void to be filled both on the field and within the team.

During a recent interview with NFL insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network at the Annual League Meeting on Sunday, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni made it very clear just how much the team will miss Jason Kelce this upcoming season along with defensive end Fletcher Cox.

“Obviously, we’ll miss their contributions on the field, but even more importantly their leadership,” he said of Kelce and Cox. “They are unbelievable leaders, unbelievable all-time Eagles, unbelievable people and unbelievable players. You know what, those guys did such a good job leading that I don’t want to say, ‘Hey, it’s Cam,’ because he’ll be the guy that will step into Jason’s role. Or Jordan Davis, it can be anybody that steps into that role because they watched the greatness of those guys lead day in and day out. … I know we have a lot of good candidates on our team that are going to be able to step up and fill that void.”

We’ll have to see who steps up to fill the void left by Kelce and Cox. But it’s pretty clear that it won’t be easy.

Unveiling the Heartbreaking Reality Behind Jason Kelce’s Journey: A Tale Not Known to All

    Jason Kelce reacting on field

Professional football player Jason Kelce made headlines on March 4, when he broke his silence on the retirement rumors and announced that he was officially retiring from the NFL. “This all brings us here to today, where I announce that I’m retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles,” he tearfully declared during a press conference. Kelce later admitted during the March 6 episode of “New Heights” that the decision was not an easy one. “Obviously, I’ve debated retiring for the last few seasons,” he revealed. “It was nerve-racking getting to that day, but a lot of the things that I said and shared are things that I’ve wanted to share for a long time. And you wait for the moment where it feels right to do it.”

No one can deny that Jason has enjoyed a successful and illustrious football career — including his brother, fellow footballer Travis Kelce. “Seven Pro Bowls, six first-team all-pro seasons, 193 total games … 156 consecutive starts … and a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles,” Travis gushed about his brother’s accomplishments during the March 6 podcast episode. Alas, Jason’s life hasn’t been all rainbows and sunshine. Here’s the tragic truth about Jason Kelce.

Jason Kelce was kicked out of preschool

    Jason Kelce attending training camp

Jason Kelce might be beloved by many, but he’s certainly no golden boy. The story goes that he was promptly 86’d from his preschool after an innocent lunchroom game of sparring with sporks went a little too far. “I just remember the next day, his dad had him under his arm, and he had four little spork dots,” he recalled about the incident during an episode of “New Heights.” Yikes!

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the last time Jason would find himself in trouble following a physical altercation. In August 2023, during a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts, Jason took matters into his own hands after watching one of his own, Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell, continuously getting hammered by Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin. Jason took Franklin to the ground, an all-out brawl ensued, and the practice was canceled. Following the events, Jason publicly apologized for his actions. “We try and keep things civil on the field, and I pride myself on being a guy that sustains the emotions and level of play out there, and I let my emotions get the better of me,” Jason confessed. “That certainly doesn’t belong out there on the field, and a little ashamed that it got to that level.”

    Jason Kelce’s parents got divorced

Ed, Donna Kelce watching Super Bowl

So far, Jason Kelce’s marriage to his wife, Kylie Kelce, is considered to be goals for many. Sadly, Jason’s parents’ marriage didn’t pan out quite as well. After almost 25 years of marriage, Ed and Donna Kelce decided to call it quits after both Jason and Travis Kelce graduated from college. According to Ed, the decision to wait to split until their sons were grown was a deliberate one. “If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,” he explained in the 2023 “Kelce” doc.

Still, Jason doesn’t consider his parents guilty of any wrongdoing. He’s actually grateful. In the “Kelce” documentary, Jason cited becoming a father himself for this particular mindset. “I think I told my mom after Wyatt was born, maybe the first year, I was like, ‘I’m sorry. I had no idea what you guys were actually sacrificing and doing on a daily basis for us,’” he said.

Jason Kelce suffered major football injuries

    Jason Kelce playing football

It’s no secret that playing football can lead to some pretty serious sports injuries. Sadly, Jason Kelce knows that all too well. During a particularly brutal game against the Baltimore Ravens, his knee was stepped on, and Kelce tore not only his MCL but part of his ACL as well. The Eagles took home the W, but Kelce was sidelined for the rest of the game. “I think that made [the injury] more frustrating for me, especially watching the offensive line struggle the way that they did,” he later recalled. Fortunately, after an entire year of rehabilitation, he was confident that he had made a full recovery. “The knee feels great … [it] has actually been feeling really good,” he declared.

In 2019, however, Kelce also revealed that in 2018 he actually played through a broken foot, a torn elbow, and a torn MCL. “You have dings and bruises every year. As long as it’s not detrimental to the team and your overall health, you can play through them,” he maintained during an offseason program media conference.

Jason Kelce lost the Super Bowl to his little brotherJason, Travis Kelce speaking

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the Kelce brothers went head-to-head in the 2023 Super Bowl. In the end, it was Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs who emerged victorious. “I won’t forget falling short to the Chiefs, and the conflicting feeling of immense heartbreak I had selfishly for myself and my teammates, and at the same time, the amount of pride I had that my brother had climbed the mountaintop once again,” Jason Kelce recalled about the bittersweet loss during his NFL retirement speech.

It appears, however, that losing to his kid brother isn’t exactly new territory for Jason. “Two-year age difference, so growing up, in typical younger brother fashion, Travis found all the other ways to get the upper hand — and that was the most annoying thing ever,” Jason jokingly lamented about their brotherly dynamic during a 2018 interview for NFL Films.

Jason Kelce was always the ‘underdog’

    Jason Kelce announcing retirement

Jason Kelce has always loved playing football. But make no mistake, he had to work really hard to play at the collegiate and professional levels. The story goes that Kelce walked onto the football team at the University of Cincinnati. “I had no stars, no investment from the team or the coaches; I had to earn everything, which was good because I had no clue what hard work was until that point,” Kelce recalled about the experience during his famous NFL retirement speech on March 4.

Alas, that same mentality followed him all the way to the NFL. In 2011, Jason Kelce was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles during the sixth round. Ironically, the Eagles didn’t even know how to spell Kelce’s name at that time. “The #Eagles select C Jason Kelsey from Cincinnati with the 191st pick!” the team fired out in a celebratory tweet.

Kelce, however, relishes his ‘underdog’ status. “I have been the underdog my entire career, and I mean this when I say it: I wish I still was,” he declared in his memorable NFL exit speech. But that’s not all. Kelce also created an entire clothing line aptly titled “Underdog Apparel.” All of the proceeds are donated to (Be)Philly Foundation to help fund various programs for the youth of Philadelphia. The slogan? “No one’s hungry like an underdog.”

The Miz offers to train the retired Eagles player to become a wrestling “superstar,” saying that Jason Kelce “could be very dangerous in WWE.” He also claims to have tried to recruit Travis

Jason Kelce has been told to consider a move to WWE now that his NFL playing days with the Philadelphia Eagles are over.

Kelce, 36, announced his retirement from football at the beginning of March in an emotional 40-minute press conference where he wept throughout, and even brought younger brother Travis to tears.

It brought weeks of speculation about his future to an end. In that time, Jason followed Travis and the Kansas City Chiefs on their way through the playoffs to Super Bowl glory – even infamously jumping out of his VIP suite and downing a beer with fans in Buffalo when his brother scored a touchdown against the Bills.

It was that moment that caught the eye of WWE star The Miz, who thinks it shows how Kelce could have a career in wrestling if he wants it.

Speaking to TMZ, he said: ‘He could be very dangerous in a WWE ring – not only with just the athleticism and the part of the wrestling, which I think he can absolutely do.

Jason Kelce has been told he could thrive in WWE after retiring from football after 13 years

The Miz has said that he believes Kelce, 36, could be as big in wrestling as he is in football

The Miz also said he has even tried to get Travis into wrestling when they have met before

‘I watched him jump up at a Bills game from, like, down and jump up into a window, and I was like, “Oh my God, this guy is 300 pounds, how did he do that? That’s incredible.”‘

WrestleMania is in Philadelphia on April 6 and 7, and Miz was asked if he thinks Kelce will appear at the event in the city he calls home.

‘I don’t know, the way I look at it is more of a fan of the Kelces,’ he said. ‘I’ve played golf with Travis, what an incredible human being.

‘Even when we were golfing I was like “when are you coming to WWE? When are you coming to WrestleMania?”.

‘With Jason, I’ve never met him, that guy has played for Philadelphia – it seems like a home run to me.

‘Who knows? He has retired, he might just want to relax and chill out. Or – he’d like to come to Philadelphia.’

Miz was asked if would train Kelce into a wrestler.

‘Hell yeah! Into a superstar! As big as he is in the NFL, we’ll make him as big of a superstar in the WWE!’

The Miz said that Jason’s personality could also be key to potential WWE success

Travis (right) has also spoken openly about wanting to try his hand at WWE in the future

‘The charisma, the ability to talk on a microphone and be captivating and innovative is something I think he has a knack for. Whatever Jason Kelce wants to do, whether it is come to WWE for WrestleMania, wink, or do something in the NFL, whatever he wants to do, I think the world is his oyster.’

Last year, Travis said that he wanted to go into WrestleMania after seeing George Kittle of San Francisco 49ers star in WrestleMania 39 at SoFi Stadium.

‘It was awesome to see him go nuts, but I got to get involved somehow, someway,’ Travis said.

‘Me and the Miz have been talking a little bit about it so hopefully, we can brew something into fruition here.

‘George absolutely killed it at WrestleMania. He made me want to be a part of that. Hopefully we can get that tag team in store here sometime soon.’

The newly retired NFL star may no longer be a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, but says he would root for them next season if the 2025 Super Bowl ended up being a rematch of them against his brother Travis and the Kansas City Chiefs. “I will always be an Eagle, first and foremost,” Jason, 36, said in response to the hypothetical query from a fan in the “No Dumb Questions” segment of the brothers’ New Heights podcast on Wednesday.

Jason added, “I’ll also root for Travis to have a good game because he’s my brother.” Travis, 34, seemingly responded with surprise to his older brother’s answer. “Good luck to your Eagles,” he joked. After this season’s disappointing Eagles playoff run, Jason cut a memorable figure in the stands cheering on the Chiefs in their Super Bowl bid, from his shirtless exploits in Buffalo to his overalls at the big game in Las Vegas.

Travis Kelce Shares What Jason Told Him for Motivation This Super Bowl: ‘He Fired Me Up'

Despite making his own headlines while watching from afar, Jason also had an impact on Travis’ performance. “He fired me up after that AFC Championship game, telling me to go and get it and that we’re the best in the game,” Travis told reporters in the lead-up to the Super Bowl. “Just having his support is all I need. Seeing him at the game, seeing him get excited, that’s everything.”

The two brothers made history last year when they faced off in the big game in February 2023, with the Chiefs winning 38-35 in a nail-biter. Following the game, however, Jason was sure to hug and congratulate his brother on the win. Travis was later emotional, and shared that their historic matchup conjured a “weird feeling.”

“There’s nothing you can really say to a loved one in a situation like that,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end said while fighting back tears after the Super Bowl last year. “You joke around all the time and say you want to beat your brother on the biggest stage, but it’s a weird feeling.”

He added, “That team had great leadership, great coaches and it came down to the end,” Travis said. “We have all the respect in the world for those Eagles. There’s nothing I can say to him other than I love him and he played a hell of a year, a hell of a season.”

The Eagles may find it difficult to replace Jason Kelce as a leader in the locker room, according to Andy Reid

The head coach spoke about Kelce during the NFL owner’s meeting in Florida

In the wake of Jason Kelce’s retirement from the NFL, Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, took a moment to reflect on the profound impact Kelce had on the Philadelphia Eagles’ locker room.

Kelce, a legendary center who spent his entire 13-year career with the Eagles, announced his retirement earlier this month, leaving behind a void that Reid believes will be difficult to fill.

    Thank you for watching

Speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meeting, Reid shared his sentiments, acknowledging Kelce’s leadership both on and off the field.

‘It’s tough for a couple of reasons. I don’t know who’s coming up behind him but he had a big voice in there.”

“Not only was he a great player, but he also had the leadership. He did it on the field, he also did it off the field, which was important. All those guys keeping everybody in line is a big thing. I’m sure they have other guys who can work in there. “Reid remarked.

He emphasized Kelce’s influential presence, highlighting the challenge of finding someone to step into his shoes.

Reid, who drafted Kelce in 2011 during his tenure with the Eagles, recognized the significance of Kelce’s contributions from the moment he joined the team. “He kinda took over things right away,”Reid recalled, emphasizing Kelce’s natural ability to lead.

Reflecting on his relationship with the Kelce family, Reid expressed pride in both Jason and his younger brother Travis, whom he drafted in 2013 while coaching the Chiefs.

“That family, I’ve become close with it,”Reid remarked fondly. “Tremendous players, and Jason is a great leader – emotional player, brings that to the table, and has done so for a long time.”

Reid’s admiration for Kelce extended beyond the football field, acknowledging the toll the game takes on players’ bodies and expressing support for Kelce’s decision to retire.

“My hat goes off to him,”Reid said, acknowledging Kelce’s achievements and the sacrifices he made throughout his career.

Notably, Jason played a pivotal role in convincing Reid to take a chance on his brother Travis, despite initial reservations.

Reid recalled reaching out to Jason before the draft, seeking his approval before selecting Travis.

Jason’s endorsement played a significant role in Reid’s decision, showcasing the bond between coach and player.

Chiefs expected to announce Reid contract extension soon

In other developments, Reid and the Chiefs are expected to begin negotiations on a new contract, with Reid poised to become one of the highest-paid coaches in football history.

Despite perpetual speculation about retirement, Reid has shown no signs of slowing down, reaffirming his commitment to leading the Chiefs in pursuit of a three-peat.

The team’s general manager, Brett Veach, is also due for a new contract deal.

Veach and Reid signed extensions after the Chiefs’ win in Super Bowl LIV.

Since then, Kansas City has won two more back-to-back championships and are the first team to run it back since the 2003-04 New England Patriots.

Reid is believed to be the third highest-earning coach in the AFC West after Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh.

The N.F.L. tends to suppress individuality, but podcasts from stars like the Kelce brothers, Micah Parsons and Tyreek Hill are popping up as valuable portals to fans.

Hours after winning a playoff game with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, tight end Travis Kelce chatted with his older brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, about the intricacies of blocking defensive linemen while the siblings devoured dinner at a steakhouse.

As they laughed, Travis Kelce’s longtime manager, Aaron Eanes, realized that the moments delighting him could be projected to millions of viewers and listeners. Shortly after the meal, they all started talking seriously about putting together a podcast.

“New Heights,” the audio and video series that the Kelces began in September 2022, now consistently ranks as the top weekly sports podcast on Apple, Spotify and other platforms, fueled in part by their teams’ Super Bowl matchup in February and Travis Kelce’s budding relationship with the pop star Taylor Swift.

“I think it’s fun and guys will keep doing it as long as there’s a thirst from the audience,” Jason Kelce said. “It feels like that’s the model a lot of guys are going to.”

The Kelces, whose teams will face off in a rematch on Monday night, are emblematic of the surge of N.F.L. players who have begun hosting podcasts during the season, a surprising development in a league that tends to suppress individuality. The next-man-up mind-set is pervasive in a violent sport that requires its athletes to be concealed in helmets, and in a league that enforces a strict uniform policy and delivers five-figure fines for excessive celebrations.

But an influx of younger, more tolerant coaches and executives, as well as players who are becoming more business-conscious, has opened the door for several N.F.L. stars to moonlight as podcast hosts, including Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill.

The 36-year-old missed out on the fairy-tale ending to his career by failing to win this year’s Super Bowl.

In fact, his final season in Philly ended with the Eagles crashing out of the playoffs on Wild Card Weekend to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jason discussed his retirement in the latest ‘New Heights’ podcast with brother Travis.

During the episode, the Super LII winner revealed his one biggest regret about retiring right now.

“The one thing I’m disappointed about retiring right now is I’m retiring when the Eagles had potentially the biggest collapse in the history of the organisation.

    “Not potentially, probably the most.

“The reason why I say I’m upset about that is I really truly think the Eagles are gonna’ ball out next year.

They followed that up with a 32-9 loss to the Bucs in the wild-card round, which turned out to be Jason’s last ever game with the franchise.

Although his playing days are over, Jason said he will continue to support the Eagles.

However, he’ll also be rooting for three other teams too.

“I’m Eagles first and foremost,” he said on the 6 March episode of ‘New Heights’.

“The new version of the program, originally hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy and appearing on Fox’s broadcast network, would rely on celebrity guests rather than children, according to these people.”

“Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” debuted in 2007 on Fox. This is a description of the show from Paramount Plus: “Brainy youngsters help adult contestants with questions taken from an elementary school curriculum.”

The show aired for four seasons on Fox before going off the air for three years. It was on briefly again in 2015, then moved to Nickelodeon in 2019 and former professional wrestler John Cena was the host.

    Kelce’s future

Kelce, 34, signed with the Creative Artists Agency last summer following his “SNL” appearance.

“When Travis joined the NFL as a rookie, it was clear to us that he had star potential both on and off the field. We have a shared vision of Travis not only as a transcendent athlete, but also as a media and entertainment powerhouse,” his managers Aaron and André Eanes told the Hollywood Reporter at that time. “We believe the talented CAA team will bring that vision to life and we’re excited to embark on this journey together.”

According to Spotrac, Kelce’s contract with the Chiefs runs through the 2025 season, but athletes have been known to hang up their cleats early.

However, after the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII, Kelce was asked by reporters if he would be back for the 2024 season.

“Hell yeah,” he said. “I want that three-peat.”
