Watching Jason Kelce and Creed Humphrey on the field feels like déjà vu – their playing style mirrors each other with precision footwork and a relentless drive.

Jason Kelce and Creed Humphrey: A Study in Elite Center Play

Jason Kelce has established himself as one of the greatest centers in NFL history during his 11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Meanwhile, Creed Humphrey is quickly emerging as one of the top young centers in the league in just his second season with the Kansas City Chiefs. Though at different stages in their careers, Kelce and Humphrey share remarkable similarities in their playing styles that have made them dominant forces on the offensive line. Let’s take a closer look at how these two centers excel.

    Pass Protection Mastery

One of the most important jobs for any NFL center is protecting the quarterback. Both Kelce and Humphrey have proven themselves to be elite in this area. Kelce has only allowed 18 sacks over the past seven seasons according to Pro Football Focus. That is an incredibly low number considering how often he has anchored the Eagles’ offensive line over that span. Humphrey was even better as a rookie, surrendering just half a sack in over 1000 offensive snaps.

Their ability to read defensive schemes and make the right blocking assignments is what allows them to shut down pass rushers before they can even get close to the quarterback. Both centers are quick to identify blitzes and slide their protection to account for extra rushers. Even against standard four-man rushes, Kelce and Humphrey possess the strength, technique, and football IQ to stonewall powerful defensive tackles and prevent them from collapsing the pocket.

Their footwork and hand placement are textbook. They are always in proper position, with their hands inside the frame of defenders to control them. This prevents pass rushers from gaining any leverage or momentum on their rush. Kelce and Humphrey make it look effortless the way they can absorb power rushes without getting moved backward even an inch. But it’s a skill that has been refined over countless practice reps.

The result is quarterbacks who feel comfortable standing tall in the pocket, going through their reads without the fear of an imminent sack. For Kelce, this allowed Donovan McNabb, Nick Foles, Carson Wentz, and Jalen Hurts to thrive during his time in Philadelphia. Humphrey has provided the same security for Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, giving the superstar QB the time he needs to unleash his passing arsenal downfield. Reliable pass protection from the center position is a hallmark of Kelce and Humphrey’s games.

    Power in the Trenches

While protecting the quarterback is crucial, a center must also excel as a run blocker. Here again, Kelce and Humphrey demonstrate their dominance through tremendous power in the trenches. At just 6’3″, Kelce may not seem physically imposing. But he plays with excellent leverage and strength that allows him to control much larger defenders.

Humphrey possesses a similar build at 6’5″ but with incredible lower body strength. On running plays between the guards, both centers are able to drive defensive tackles backward almost single-handedly to clear holes for running backs. It’s a testament to their functional strength that they can overwhelm opponents who may have size advantages.

Their ability to anchor against power moves is also remarkable. When defensive tackles try bull rushing right through the middle, Kelce and Humphrey plant their feet and hold their ground better than any centers in the league. They create an impenetrable wall in the center of the line that running backs can follow through for positive yardage. It’s no wonder both the Eagles and Chiefs have consistently ranked near the top of the NFL in rushing over the past few years.

The footwork and hand placement that serve Kelce and Humphrey so well in pass protection also translate to dominant run blocking. They are always in position to get underneath the pads of defenders and control them. Even when double teamed, these centers do not lose leverage battles. Their combination of technique, strength, and tenacity in the run game is what makes them road graders who can move any defense.

    Football IQ and Leadership

While the physical attributes are certainly impressive, what truly separates elite centers is their high football IQ and leadership on the field. Here again, Kelce and Humphrey demonstrate remarkable similarities. Both players have an encyclopedic knowledge of defensive schemes and tendencies. They can identify pre-snap whether it’s a blitz or standard rush and make the line calls to adjust accordingly.

As the quarterback of the offensive line, Kelce has long been the vocal leader for the Eagles. He barks out blocking assignments and gets everyone on the same page. Humphrey is following right in those footsteps as a rookie, already taking charge of the Chiefs’ line and commanding respect from his veteran teammates. Their football smarts allow them to process information quickly and ensure everyone is on the same page in protecting the QB or creating running lanes.

Their ability to read defenses at the line of scrimmage and anticipate twists or stunts is what separates them from lesser centers. Both Kelce and Humphrey seem to know what the defense is trying to do even before the ball is snapped. This allows their lines to stay one step ahead and thwart pressure attempts before they even materialize. It’s a mental aspect of the game that doesn’t show up in traditional stats but is just as important.

    Following in Footsteps

It’s no secret that Humphrey has modeled his game after Jason Kelce. In an interview last season, Humphrey said he watched hours of Kelce film to learn techniques and fundamentals [NFL.com]. The rookie center was impressed not just by Kelce’s physical talents, but also his football IQ and leadership on the field. Humphrey aimed to emulate those traits as he entered the NFL.

So far, the film study is paying off. Humphrey has drawn many comparisons to a young Kelce for his combination of athleticism, technique, and football smarts. Like his role model, Humphrey has seamlessly made the transition to calling protections and being the anchor of Kansas City’s line as just a second-year pro. The early returns on his NFL career are eerily similar to Kelce’s in Philadelphia all those years ago.

With continued development, there’s no reason Humphrey can’t one day achieve the same legendary status as Kelce. He still has room to grow physically and refine his game even further. But the early signs point to Humphrey following the same elite career arc if he stays committed to his craft. Down the line, we may very well look back and see Humphrey as the natural successor who carried on Kelce’s tradition of excellence at the center position in the NFL.

    Conclusion

Though separated by over a decade in age and experience, Jason Kelce and Creed Humphrey undeniably share remarkable similarities in their playing styles that have made them dominant forces for their respective teams. From their mastery of pass protection to overwhelming power in the run game, both centers demonstrate textbook technique, football smarts, and leadership that separates them from their peers.

Humphrey seems to be modeling his young career directly after Kelce, and the results have been spectacular so far. As the rookie continues to develop, he shows all the signs of one day achieving the same legendary status in the league that Kelce has attained. Their styles of play have kept quarterback after quarterback protected and opened holes for running backs season after season. Centers of their caliber do not come around often, making both Kelce and Humphrey truly special players at the heart of their offensive lines.

“I think I’ll have an answer in the next couple weeks,” the beloved Philadelphia Eagles center said.

“I think if I still want to play, I’m going to play,” Kelce said. “I think right now we’re not far enough away from the last game. It’s emotional, it’s a long season, the end of the season quite frankly, awful. So I’m just going to take some time, rest, recoup and then figure it out.”

Kelce played his last game of the season on January 15 when the Eagles were eliminated from the NFL playoffs in a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As the clock ticked down at the end of the game, television cameras caught Kelce holding back tears and sharing an emotional embrace with his longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

The 13-year veteran then jogged towards the stands to look for his family, sharing another emotional hug with his wife Kylie and a handshake with his father Ed Kelce, who traveled to Florida to be there for the game.

Kelce declined to speak with the media after the game, meanwhile players, pundits and the league itself posted tributes to him on social media with the assumption he had just played his final NFL game.

Both the NFL and ESPN reported that Kelce told his Eagles teammates after the game that he planned to retire.

However, nearly a month since then, Kelce has repeatedly indicated he might not be ready to hang it up after all.

Last week on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast, Kelce said the idea of retirement is “exciting” but also “daunting.”

“It is exciting to think about possibilities — it is exciting to be able to lose weight, feel good, and not physically fight for my life every day,” he said. “I think it is also daunting. It is anxiety and at the end of the day, it is the unknown.”

Kelce has been open about his thoughts towards retirement in recent years, most prominently during a wrenching scene in his Kelce documentary on Prime Video last fall.

“It’s getting harder and harder to play,” Jason said in one poignant scene. “There have been little things that are not big things yet but are going to turn into big things the longer I play.”

He and Kylie, 31, welcomed their third daughter Bennett Llewellyn Kelce shortly after Super Bowl LVII last year, which the Eagles lost to his brother’s Kansas City Chiefs team.

Kelce has spent the last month in the stands with his family and Travis’ girlfriend Taylor Swift, cheering on his brother as the Chiefs went on to win back-to-back Super Bowl championships on Sunday.

On an episode of the brothers’ New Heights podcast, Kelce said that when it comes to his retirement, he’s doing his best not to factor in the chance to win another Super Bowl with the Eagles.

“I want the decision of whether I am going to play to be based on whether I want to do it,” he told his brother Travis. “Selfishly, I need to decide, can I commit? Can I mentally be there? Do I want to endure that again? Winning helps that, but you try to not factor that into the decision.”

  • Jason Kelce credits self-care routine for his peak performance on the field. Discover the secrets behind his success!

Jason Kelce credits self-care routine for his peak performance on the field. Discover the secrets behind his success!

Jason Kelce, the Philadelphia Eagles center, is known for his dominance on the offensive line

But according to some reports, a big part of his success comes from his dedication to self-care. While his talent and athleticism are undeniable factors in his performance, Kelce’s focus on well-being may also translate to advantages on the field. Let’s take a closer look at how prioritizing self-care could impact Kelce’s game.

    Improved Physical Health
Self-care often includes maintaining good physical health through proper nutrition, rest, and exercise. These lifestyle factors directly influence an athlete’s conditioning and ability to perform at a high level. Kelce is said to place great importance on getting quality sleep and fueling his body with nutritious meals. Prioritizing rest and recovery through adequate sleep allows his body to recharge fully between games and practices. This enhanced recovery no doubt helps Kelce enter each contest feeling strong, energized, and ready to dominate.

Additionally, Kelce is mindful about what he puts in his body. He focuses on lean proteins, complex carbs, healthy fats, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to power his performance. This balanced diet provides his body with sustained energy, aids in muscle recovery and growth, and reduces inflammation. The clean fuel surely translates to increased stamina over the course of a grueling NFL season and playoffs. With optimal nutrition and sufficient rest, Kelce is likely ensuring he has the strength, endurance and focus needed to protect his quarterback and open holes for runners game after game.

Kelce also makes exercise a priority in his routine. He hits the weight room to build and maintain muscle mass, goes on runs to improve his cardiovascular fitness, and works on mobility and flexibility. This commitment to training translates to increased power, agility, and durability on the field. With his well-conditioned physique, Kelce can dominate opposing linemen through four quarters without wearing down. His rigorous workouts no doubt give him an edge over less committed opponents. Through prioritizing physical health with rest, nutrition, and training, Kelce has optimized his body to perform at an elite level week after week.

    Enhanced Mental Toughness
In addition to physical preparation, self-care also incorporates practices that boost mental well-being. The high-pressure world of professional football requires tremendous mental resilience and focus. Kelce incorporates various techniques into his routine aimed at managing stress and sharpening his mind. He is said to practice meditation, doing simple breathing exercises before and after practices to calm his nerves and clear his head. These relaxation methods may help Kelce enter each game with a calm yet competitive mindset.

With meditation, Kelce is likely cultivating presence, patience, and poise under pressure. These mental skills surely serve him well when tasked with making lightning-quick blocking decisions against 300-pound defenders. Some reports indicate Kelce also sees a sports psychologist. Working with a mental coach could enhance his ability to stay locked in, brush off mistakes, and maintain composure despite the chaos of an NFL game. These self-care practices seem to be improving Kelce’s mental toughness and resilience, allowing him to stay focused and confident even in high-pressure playoff moments.

    Reduced Risk of Injuries
Proper rest and recovery are also crucial for injury prevention over an NFL season. Fatigue-related injuries are common in such an intense contact sport. By prioritizing adequate sleep and nutrition, Kelce may be reducing his risk of getting sidelined. His diligent approach to rest allows his body to recharge fully between games. Similarly, fueling up with nutritious whole foods provides his muscles with the nutrients and energy needed to repair effectively. With enhanced recovery through self-care, Kelce’s body is better able to withstand the physical demands of each contest without breaking down.

Fewer minor injuries also means more practice time to hone his skills and more playing time contributing to his team’s success. Absences due to overuse or cumulative damage are minimized. By taking care of his health holistically, Kelce is able to stay on the field and in top form. His commitment to rest, recovery and injury prevention through self-care no doubt extends his career longevity at an elite level. Overall, prioritizing well-being seems to be keeping Kelce battle-ready and availability for key games.

    Stronger Team Chemistry
Beyond individual benefits, Kelce’s dedication to self-care may also positively impact team dynamics. Taking care of one’s mental and physical health can foster a more positive mindset and approach to the game. A well-rested and calm Kelce is likely a better communicator, leader and teammate. He can encourage and uplift others through his example of discipline and focus. With reduced stress and a balanced perspective, Kelce appears to bring stability, confidence and energy to Philadelphia’s offensive line unit.

His relaxed yet competitive demeanor likely improves collaboration. Teammates may feel more comfortable taking risks, trusting that Kelce will hold his ground against all comers. With self-care, he also models the importance of rest, recovery and injury prevention for the benefit of the collective. This responsible approach to the sport seems to strengthen trust and chemistry amongst Eagles players. An at-peace yet driven Kelce could galvanize those around him to maximize their potential. Through cultivating his own well-being, Kelce may indirectly boost his team’s cohesion, camaraderie and on-field performance.

In a YouTube interview, Kelce discussed some of his self-care practices in further detail. To prepare for big Thursday night games, he makes sure to get to bed early the Tuesday before. He also does light yoga stretches and foam rolling that day to release tension. On game days, Kelce aims to eat light, healthy meals packed with nutrients for sustained energy. He listens to music to get in a “zone” before kickoff. During timeouts, Kelce takes deep breaths and visualizes successful plays to come. These small yet meaningful rituals seem to get his mind and body in a optimal state to dominate. Through diligent self-care, Kelce is able to consistently perform at an All-Pro level season after season.

In summary, Jason Kelce’s commitment to physical, mental and emotional well-being through self-care appears to translate positively to his success on the football field. Prioritizing rest, nutrition, stress management and injury prevention keeps his body and mind primed to protect his quarterback and open running lanes. Reduced fatigue and stronger mental resilience allow Kelce to make sharp decisions and stay focused under pressure. His disciplined approach to recovery and performance also seems to strengthen team dynamics. With enhanced health, fitness, poise and leadership, Kelce is able to dominate opposing defenses and help lead the Eagles to victories. Off-field habits clearly influence his on-field dominance for Philadelphia. Through holistic self-care, Kelce is optimizing all aspects of his game to compete at an elite level.

Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox are slated to be a part of the Philadelphia Phillies’ first-pitch ceremony for the team’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

But don’t expect the recently retired Eagles center to be firing one down the pipe. In fact, Kelce told fans he won’t be throwing a pitch at all. That, he said, will be something that Cox has to handle for him.

    Why?

“To be clear (Fletcher Cox) is gonna have to throw it because my elbow doesn’t work,” Kelce wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

It makes perfect sense that a guy who spent 13 years as one of the best centers in the NFL might have some physical ailments, and you hope that Kelce can get that elbow fixed up sometime down the road.

But fans saw an opening with his post.

“Unretire and you won’t have to do it til next year,” one person responded.

“He said ‘my elbow doesn’t work’ like it’s raining outside,” another person wrote. “Hey man. Wanna throw the first pitch? Eh. My elbow doesn’t work. My henchmen can throw though. Like it’s not a big deal.”

Several fans — some with user names on X far too inappropriate to write here — came up with the idea of Kelce snapping the ball to Cox who would then make the pitch.

    Doesn’t really matter, though.

Jason Kelce advised against accepting a major TV job while urging the Philadelphia Eagles to return

Jason Kelce has been urged to reverse his decision to retire by new Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley – and he has also been warned against taking a TV role

Jason Kelce has been urged to reject a tempting TV role amid speculations about his return to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Having recently decided to retire from the NFL in an emotional press conference, Kelce has already been asked to return to the Eagles. Saquon Barkley, who has just joined the Philadelphia franchise from the New York Giants, wants to play alongside Kelce.

This is happening while several broadcasters are fighting for his on-screen talents, as he’s now free to sign up with new organisations. Kelce is one of American football’s most popular stars and hosts the ‘New Heights’ podcast with brother Travis.

That’s why ESPN, NBC, CBS, and Amazon Prime Video all want to get Kelce as a broadcaster for the 2024 NFL season, according to The Athletic. The former centre did a stint with Amazon Prime last season during the Eagles’ bye week, but ESPN is striving hard not to let their major rivals nab him. Yet, former ESPN worker Dan Patrick has counselled Kelce against accepting any position at his former company.

With a career spanning various prominent roles in sports broadcasting including 18 years at ESPN, Patrick currently hosts The Dan Patrick Show on Premiere Radio Networks, streamed on Peacock, and used to co-present NBC’s Football Night in America.

The 66-year-old, who knows a lot about the business, has warned Kelce to be careful with any offers from ESPN. “You have to be ready for what they are going to ask you to do,” Patrick said on his show. “You don’t just come in and do Monday Night Countdown. There’s so much more they’ll ask you to do.

“It’s called the car wash for a reason. You go in and you’ll be on this show and this show and this show and this show. You’re at their demand.”

Patrick thinks Kelce is good at sharing his thoughts and told him to remember how popular he is. “I wouldn’t advise him to go there because I think he’s a unique voice right now, and I would want to have one place where I could hear him,” Patrick added.

Kelce is looking forward to a summer without football for the first time in 13 years and might not make any quick decisions. His podcast ‘New Heights’ is also important and will be part of any talks. But Barkley hopes Kelce will play one more season.

Barkley voiced his excitement about the coming season on ‘New Heights’ and his hopes that Kelce would continue playing for the Eagles. “I’m like a kid in a candy store. I’m happy. I got a fresh start. I can’t wait to meet everybody and just go out there and play ball,” said Barkley on his move to Philadelphia.

Kelce agreed that the new season would be fun to watch, to which Barkley replied: “You don’t gotta watch it, you know.”

The football community doesn’t expect Kelce to change his mind, and he will leave a significant space in the Eagles’ team.

Jason Kelce’s daughter sent a 3 word message to Travis Kelce about her father’s retirement after crying like rain when she saw her dad no longer playing on the field! “…Uncle, please don’t…”

Jason Kelce’s retirement from football brought not just tears to his daughter’s eyes, but a poignant message conveyed in just three words.

As the news of her father’s departure from the field settled in, his daughter couldn’t help but express her emotions.

With tears streaming down her face like raindrops, she turned to her uncle, Travis Kelce, seeking solace in a simple yet powerful plea: “…Uncle, please don’t…”

Those three words encapsulated a daughter’s plea for the continuation of a legacy, a plea for the preservation of a bond that extended beyond the game.

In that moment, it wasn’t just about football; it was about the profound impact her father had on her life and the deep-rooted connection she shared with her uncle.

Travis Kelce, touched by his niece’s heartfelt plea, understood the weight of her words.

It wasn’t merely a request to prolong a career but a plea to maintain the essence of family unity and the cherished moments they had shared on and off the field.

Jason Kelce’s retirement marked the end of an era in football, but his daughter’s message served as a reminder of the lasting impact he had, not just as a player, but as a father and a role model.

It was a poignant moment that highlighted the intersection of family, love, and the game of football—a moment that would forever be etched in the hearts of those involved.

Jasoп Kelce Shares ‘Most Impressive Physical Feat’ He’s Ever Seeп Travis Kelce Perform

Jason and Travis Kelce's podcast could be in line for $100m deal | The Australian

Jason Kelce shared what he said might have been his younger brother’s “most impressive physical feat” during the Wed., March 27 episode of their New Heightspodcast.

Near the conclusion of the episode, the brothers first debated who can outdrink the other before shifting focus to promoting their upcoming live show, which is scheduled to take place on April 11 at the University of Cincinnati.

Both Jason, 36, and Travis Kelce, 34, played college football at the university before launching their NFL careers. Since both brothers have appeared excited to revisit their alma mater for the live show, Jason asked his brother what will be the “first thing” he does upon his return to the campus.

Travis only had to think about the question for a moment before he answered: “Adriatico’s pizza.”

The New York-style pizza and sports bar joint is located on the university campus and appears to have been a popular spot for both of the Kelce brothers. The pizza place has a special menu item, named after the university’s bearcat mascot, that Jason said Travis has tried before.

    “Adriatico’s? Bearcat?” Jason asked.

Travis confirmed he plans to visit the pizza restaurant before appearing to rethink the menu pick. “Maybe not a Bearcat,” he said.

The Bearcat is listed on Adriatico’s website as a large 30-slice pizza pie that can serve 10 to 12 people. But Travis previously tackled the entire menu item on his own, according to his older brother.

“I’ve seen you eat a full Bearcat all by yourself,” Jason said.

“And I was bigger than you right now,” Travis said. He estimated that he weighed 285 pounds after completing the task but later “got back down to 250 and won the Super Bowl the next year.”

“It might have been the most impressive physical feat I’ve ever seen you do,” Jason said.

Though the brothers didn’t mention specific pizza toppings during their discussion about Adriatico’s, the manager of a different pizza place in Cleveland revealed which toppings Travis had picked during a recent visit to his hometown. Fans of the Kelce brothers also learned what Jason’s go-to pizza toppings are late last year as the former NFL player filmed a pizza ad with his wife, Kylie Kelce.
