Top 5 Greatest Michael Jordan Moments

    Source: R1 / R1

Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player to ever play the game, turns 60 today! Jordan, in today’s age, is known for his iconic retro shoe collection that has people lined up around the block on each release date. As LeBron leads the new generation’s argument for the G.O.A.T. discussion, The golden era NBA fans hold on to Jordan as their G.O.A.T. for his sick Jay’s, unbelievable plays and overall undeniable dominance.

Jordan was drafted in the NBA in 1984 and led the league in scoring his rookie year! After breaking his foot in his second year, returned to the NBA leading the league in scoring for seven consecutive years! Doing it in style, with flashy plays, and a couple of dunk contests in between, Jordan became a household name before the championship rings. But it didn’t stop at just basketball, Jordan was athletically gifted. from basketball to baseball, Jordan, fresh off of a three-peat in the middle of his prime, decided to test his skills professionally by playing for the Chicago White Sox’s minor league team. Jordan recorded 88 hits with a .289 on base average, 51 RBIs, 3 home runs, and 30 stolen bases.

Great for a rookie, but not as dominant of a performance he’d like to have, He returned to the NBA where he won another three consecutive NBA championships, None of which went to game seven of the series, to cement his legacy as the Greatest player to ever play the game. Today, Jordan is recognized as an American businessman, as he is the face of his own Jordan brand, he also serves as Chairperson for the Charlotte Hornets.

But before the board meetings, his business was handled on the basketball court and on the baseball diamond. As we commemorate Michael Jordan on his 60th birthday, we take a look back at the top 5 moments in his athletic career!

    Honorable Mention:

The Shot – Jordan made many game-winning baskets in his career, dating all the way back to college. This one wasn’t even to win an NBA championship like “The Final Shot”, but “The shot” over Craig Ehlo in the 1989 NBA playoffs just officially sealed the deal for Jordan as a closer. With time winding down in a must-score situation, You give Michael Jordan the Basketball.

Jordan Snatch Block- A 38-year-old Michael Jordan letting these young bucks know he’s still got it, he climbs the ladders to save two points on a go-ahead fast break layup.

The Shrug- After talks of only being a “paint scorer” and not having much versatility outside the paint, Jordan made a point to prove his game in the 1992 NBA Finals. In game 1, he took his talents beyond the arch, making (an NBA record at the time) six three-pointers in one half!

    1. #5: Jordan’s Game-Winner vs Georgetown

A young “Mike Jordan” as they knew him then, was not the go-to guy on that 1982 Tar Heels team. James Worthy was considered the go-to guy on that team and was recieving a lot of double team coverage in a closely contested game that came down to the wire, which gave head coach Dean Smith the perfect idea. He drew up a play for Michael Jordan and the rest was history!

    2. #4: Jordan’s First Professional Home Run

Jordan’s father loved baseball and got Jordan involved in the sport as a kid. It’s not everyday you see a player at the top of their sport, leaving in the middle of their prime to bring a childhood hobby back to life. That’s exactly what Jordan did. After his first three-peat, he signed with the Chicago White Sox’s affiliate and lived out his fantasy, in tribute to his father, to play baseball professionally.

    3. #3: “The Flu Game”

In Game 5 of the 1997 Finals, Jordan arrived to the arena suffering from Flu-like symptoms. In today’s day, Players would have been sidelined for safety measures, But in a tough series, with an NBA Championship on the line, missing one day of work could have changed the trajectory of Jordan’s career. He went on to help his team defeat the Jazz, contributing 38 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in must-win game that will be remember forever.

    4. #2: Air Jordan Dunk

Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins set the bar with the 1988 giving the fans what we know today as arguably the greatest dunk contest ever. In the first round, Jordan came out firing. Taking off from the free throw line, Jordan’s flair through the air moment was captured on camera and used today as what we know to be the iconic Air Jordan logo.

    5. #1: The Final Shot

What else could be number one? Arguably the most important shot of his career, Jordan took the ball coast to coast in the final seconds of the 1998 NBA Finals to hit the game-winning shot over Byron Russell to put the cherry on top of a second three-peat!

  • THE LEGEND OFMICHAEL JORDAN

    THE LEGEND OFMICHAEL JORDAN

In the 5½ years that athletes have been sharing their stories with The Players’ Tribune, one subject has been a nearly constant source of inspiration:
Every athlete, it seems, has a story about Michael Jordan.

To some he was a rival. To others an icon — or a boss, or an inspiration
or a muse. “I believe greatness is an evolutionary process that
changes and evolves era to era,” Jordan once said. And for athletes of all eras,
it’s clear that MJ had an influence not only on basketball,
but also on culture and society.

To honor his legend, we’ve compiled a collection of our favorite stories about
His Airness — all from the archives of TPT

    RIVAL

I got an MJ story to tell you.

It was a preseason game against the Bulls my rookie year. So it’s 1990. It was the Bulls but not the Michael Jordan Bulls yet, know what I mean? It’s before the first three-peat. They were still getting beat in the playoffs by Detroit, in like ’88 and ’89.

And so I’m coming in there, preseason, second pick in the draft. I don’t care who the hell Michael Jordan is. I’d seen him when I was coming up. To me it was like, O.K., he’s good … but he’s not all that.

MJ was on the bench most of the game — I didn’t understand that it was just preseason and MJ doesn’t play hard like that in a preseason game. So B.J. Armstrong had me. I gave him 19 points. And I’m a rookie, so of course I’m talking crazy. I’m talking s*** to B.J. I’m running by the bench, saying s*** to MJ. I’m staring guys down. I feel great.

    GARY PAYTON

A few weeks later, we had the Bulls for the first time in the regular season, at home in Seattle. I’ve been working for it, waiting for it, I’m ready. And of course, everybody’s talking about how it’s the Bulls — how Michael’s coming to town. I’m like, O.K. I gave them 19. I know I can get down on MJ, no problem.

So we go out there before the game, and everybody is shaking hands at the circle.

    MJ wouldn’t shake my hand.

He turns to B.J. and he says, “Leave the f***ing rookie to me,” so everyone can hear it.

S***, O.K., I’m thinking. Well f*** it then. Bring it on.

The game gets going. I’m checking Michael, and I see Phil Jackson start calling plays — four, five, six times in a row, he’s calling plays for Michael. And Michael is scoring four, five, six times in a row. Michael is on a different level than I knew there was.

In a matter of minutes, I’m in foul trouble. K.C. benches me. I didn’t really go back in the game much more after that. I remember I finished with no points — played about seven or eight minutes. MJ ended up going for 33.

PHOTO BY ANDREW D. BERNSTEIN/NBAE/GETTY IMAGES

But that wasn’t the end of it. Near the end of the game, I’m sitting on the bench, and MJ comes over to our bench — comes right up to me while the game is still going on. Coach is standing right there. Everyone on the bench is staring at him.

“That s*** you talking in preseason?”

The wild thing is, MJ isn’t even mad or nothing. He’s chewing his f***ing gum.

“This is the real s*** right here. Welcome to the NBA, little fella.”

The Bulls won the title that season, and then five more before he was done.

I’m lucky I got to see MJ in his prime,
    the early-’90s-MVP-coming-to-kill-you
    Michael Jordan….

It didn’t take anybody long to realize that when you
played Michael, you could be coming off the best game
of your life, playing at home, playing on your birthday — he could have the damn flu — whatever.

All the odds could be in your favor, and then MJ would score 25 in the first half, stick his tongue out …
just take aim at your entire organization.

    He lived for that.

I remember, Michael Jordan walks into our locker room, suit and tie. I’m like, What in the hell is he doing in our locker room?
Is he coming to the training room?

“Lace ’em up, it’s gonna be a long night.”

I’m like, Did he just come in our
locker room? I didn’t know what to say.
    I was shocked.

He had 60 points that night.

A legacy is built by more than what is seen.It is not given, it is earned.

“Luka Doncic’s Loyalty Rewarded: NASCAR Team, Backed by Michael Jordan’s $150,000,000 Investment, Continues Support Despite LeBron James Snub”

Michael Jordan‘s entrepreneurial spirit shines brightly, just like his basketball prowess. Even before he set foot on NBA hardwood, he demonstrated his innovative thinking with the industry-changing deal with Nike. Furthermore, after retiring, Jordan has immersed himself in various ventures. Recently, he has again joined forces with Luka Doncic through the Jordan Brand. Following a successful launch last year, Jordan has just unveiled the Luka 2. And, what’s truly captivating is the imaginative approach the brand has taken to promote the sneaker.

Just a few days ago, Luka and Jordan orchestrated an unprecedented event–a basketball game set right in the middle of Slovenia’s picturesque Lake Bled. The brand is constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity. Now, the dynamic duo is gearing up for their next captivating endeavor.

Michael Jordan’s passion for auto racing dates back to well before his Bulls days. Even after retiring from the NBA in 2003, MJ remained a devoted attendee at NASCAR races. In 2020, he achieved a lifelong dream by becoming the majority owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team 23XI.

As part of the ongoing sneaker venture, MJ and Doncic have now decided to hit the world of motorsport. As a result, a souped-up Camry model can be seen with vibrant lime green Luka Doncic embellishment. The idea is to tie in with his upcoming TrickShot colorway. The sight will be up to witness this weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Just like the sneakers, the race car is set to sport a playful neon-accented color scheme. Jordan seems to be going the extra mile to elevate Luka Doncic. After all, Doncic has displayed steadfast loyalty to Jordan over the years. Despite being pursued by LeBron James for his shoe lineup, Doncic’s allegiance has remained firmly with MJ over the years.

In 2020, Michael Jordan teamed up with three-time Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin to establish the 23XI Racing. Furthermore, since February 2022, the Jumpman banner has proudly adorned the No. 45 car as one of Toyota’s official sponsors.

Jordan and Donic hosted a tournament on a floating basketball court

To launch the highly anticipated Luka 2, Lake Bled version, Jordan and Doncic made sure to start from where it all began – Lake Bled itself. Together, the duo orchestrated a 3×3 basketball tournament that featured a floating court on the lake. The purpose of this event was not only to unveil the sneakers but also to highlight the natural beauty of Doncic’s homeland. Apart from being the face of Jordan’s brand, Luka is also an active for the Slovenian Tourist Board.

Nestled in the heart of the Slovenian Alps, Lake Bled is a breathtaking location in Northwest Slovenia. It takes its name from the nearby town of Bled. Beyond sneakers and basketball, the event celebrates Slovenia’s splendor. In addition to the thrilling 3×3 matches, the event also featured an electrifying dunk contest that had fans cheering with enthusiasm.

  • Comparing LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in their age 34 season

Comparing LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in their age 34 season

Comparing LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in their age 34 season

The GOAT debate is a never ending one and finding common ground between stans of different players is impossible. The one thing we can do is compare greatness across stats and maybe try to draw some conclusion from it.

LeBron James is 34 now and in his first season as a Laker, has missed the playoffs for the first time since his sophomore season in the NBA. What were Kobe and Jordan doing at the same age? Comparing their performances at the age 34 might not be enough to settle the debate of who is the greatest NBA player of all time, but it will tell a story and what are we here for if not to look for stories in the randomest of places.

    Points per Game

Jordan is the highest scorer among the three through his career by a clear margin. His career average in points per game is 30.1 comfortably higher than both Kobe and LeBron. Kobe’s career numbers took a major hit in his final three injury ridden seasons, but still come in at 25 points per game. LeBron still playing at a high level is averaging 27.2 points per game for his career.

In their year 34 season, Jordan averaged 28.7 points per game that is the highest among the three but not by a lot. Kobe comes in second with an average of 27.3 points per game and LeBron comes is last by a whisker with 27.1 points per game. It is crucial to note though that Lakers have basically shut shop for the season and LeBron has been given freedom to stat chase in he final 20 games, so might go past both Kobe and Jordan’s number in points at least.

    Assists per Game

Once again career number standings prove accurate when it comes to age 34 season. LeBron is without doubt one of the greatest passers in the game and a much better passer than Kobe or Jordan. For the career LeBron James has assist average of 8 assists per game better than Jordan’s 5.3 APG and Kobe’s 4.7 APG.

Despite Kobe’s lower numbers than Jordan, many argue that Kobe was a better passer, but got stuck on very average teams that deflate his passing stats. He played many years without a secondary star until Pau Gasol was brought in on a trade and played most of his career without a legitimate point guard on the team to smoothen the offense.

However in their age 34 season LeBron keeps his numbers going with 8.1 assists per game. Jordan’s numbers fell to 3.5 assists per game and Kobe Bryant, playing with Gasol, Nash and Howard showed he could defer with capable players around him with 6.1 Assists per game.

    Rebounds per Game

For his career LeBron James averages 7.4 rebounds per game. His average goes up this season due to lack of big men on the Lakers roster, with 8.6 rebounds per game. Jordan averaged 6.2 rebounds per game for his career. In his 34 year season, Jordan averaged a smidge under his career average with 5.8 rebounds per game. Kobe Bryant playing with Howard and Gasol was bound to be low on the rebounds but still averaged a healthy 5.6 rebounds in the 2012-13 season, higher than his career average of 5.2 rebounds per game, which reflects how much heavy lifting he did on the team that was supposed to be a championship contender.

    Shooting

While Jordan and Kobe were pure shooters, LeBron isn’t a shooter first. But when it comes to effective field goal percentages, LeBron has the best career and age 34 numbers among the three. LeBron has a 56.5% eFG this season and for his career his eFG% stands at 54.1%.

Kobe has the second highest eFG in his year 34 season. His mark was 50.4% whereas his career average is 48.2%.

Jordan has the lowest eFG in his year 34 season. His mark of 47.3% is lower than his career mark of 50.9 eFG%.

    Individual and Team Honors

All three players had drastically different seasons for their teams in their year 34 season. Michael Jordan won pretty much every honor there was to be won. His Bulls won their 6th title and their second three peat with Jordan. Jordan won the Regular season MVP and the Finals MVP. He was also voted to the All-NBA 1st Team and All-Defensive 1st team (which might be the most impressive stat of everything discussed, as defense is the first thing that goes when a player ages.)

Kobe Bryant did everything in his power to take his crew of Nash Howard Gasol and MWP to the playoffs, including coming out with a torn achilles to hit free throws that took the Lakers to the playoffs, where they got swept by the Spurs without Bryant. He was voted to the All-NBA First Team for his efforts.

LeBron has yet to finish his season, but having missed the playoffs, MVP award is certainly out of his reach despite great statistical numbers. His defense can win awards, but only if they had Razzies for the NBA. He will certainly make an All-NBA Team, although if thats a first second or third is yet to be seen.

Now, you have all the stats, whichever stat you prefer, you can select to decide which player had the best season. However if you look at individual and team honors, which are kind of the point of the NBA, Jordan had an ultra successful season capped with an MVP and a title, two things neither Kobe nor LeBron can will have from their seasons.

Kobe Bryant On Playing Michael Jordan 1-On-1: “Michael Jordan Can’t Stop Me. I’m Not Saying I Can Stop Him. But He Can’t Stop Me.”

Kobe Bryant always had big confidence in himself and his capacity to make whatever he wanted on the basketball court. This man went straight out of high school to play in the NBA, where he became one of the greatest to ever do it.

The young Mamba was always trying to find challenges and get inspired by all the things around him, including his basketball idol, Michael Jordan. From a very young age, Bryant was predicting what he was going to do when he made it to the league and when he landed in the association, he didn’t disappoint. One of the biggest histories about Kobe was how he claimed he would have beaten Jordan at a young age.

Back in 2014, a former high school teammate revealed how Kobe really felt about facing Jordan one-on-one and how he would be unable to stop the teenager in a pickup game.

Per the LA Daily News (via Slam Online):

“I remember Kobe saying, ‘Michael Jordan can’t stop me,’” said David Lasman, one of Bryant’s former teammates at Lower Merion, a suburban high school outside Philadelphia. “‘I’m not saying I can stop him. But he can’t stop me.’”

Lasman would tell the 17-year-old Bryant he’s “crazy” for saying something so brash. After all, Jordan would win six NBA championships, six Finals MVPs and five regular-season MVPs. But Bryant would eventually enter the NBA out of high school, win five NBA championships with the Lakers and spark never-ending comparisons to Jordan.

Bryant could also surpass Jordan for third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list when the Lakers (6-16) visit San Antonio (15-6) on Friday at AT&T Center. Bryant only needs 31 points to surpass Jordan’s 32,292 career points. Bryant conceded his upcoming milestone will mark “a great accomplishment,” trailing only Karl Malone (36,928) and former Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) on the scoring list. But Bryant argued “the true beauty in it comes in the journey.”

Jordan and Kobe didn’t have as many duels as we would have liked, but whenever they went at it, you know it was a good show. They starred in several good moments throughout NBA history, even calling each other out during games to go one on one and make points or draw fouls.

They ended up having a great relationship, becoming brothers and sharing a big passion for the game. Kobe modeled his game after MJ and he was always proud to see how great his pupil was. However, not everybody is convinced that Kobe would have beaten Jordan in a one-on-one game.
