Kelce shows some love to Cox.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been very active on the transaction line as the new NFL league year begins. They’ve signed several new players but have also lost some longtime franchise stalwarts, including Fletcher Cox.

Jason Kelce is another longtime Eagle who is hanging up his cleats. He was with Cox for the entirety of the defensive tackle’s career. Kelce spoke glowingly of Cox on the latest episode of the New Heights Podcast presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment.

“Fletch is the epitome of what it is to be like an Eagle. Like if you were to take like the ideal Eagle in my opinion, it’s Fletcher Cox,” Kelce said. “In his prime you know, just being honest, I don’t know that I played anybody better, I really don’t. Just an outstanding teammate, a guy that was very beloved in the organization by almost everybody”

Cox played his entire 12-year career with the Eagles, who selected him in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Cox spoke about his retirement decision and how he knew it was time to give up his playing career.

“During the season, we all know it’s a long season, right, you’re physically beat up. Sometimes, I found myself asking myself, ‘Why?’ And I always told myself, whenever I feel that way, I know it’s time,” Cox told Rich Eisen, per NBC Sports. “I enjoyed it. I still feel like I played at a really high level last year, even with the ups and downs and missed some games and missing some time.”

 

Cox missed two games in 2023 but managed to record five sacks and 17 QB hits. He was a productive player and a great mentor for the young pass-rushers on Philly’s roster. Those youngsters, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter among them will have more responsibility on their shoulders in 2024 with Cox gone.

Not only will it be hard for the Eagles to replace Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox as players, but their leadership on and off the field will be missed. That leadership showed over the last few seasons as Cox and Kelce were very vocal on the sideline and in the locker room during games.

If Russ is even close to the quarterback he used to be, this is an extremely dangerous team with what they’re working with on the defensive side of the ball.”

Travis knows plenty about Wilson considering the 35-year-old faced Kansas City a total of four times during his two-season Denver tenure. This past October, the signal-caller who earned nine Pro Bowl nods while with the Seattle Seahawks, helped the Broncos earn a 24-9 victory over the Chiefs.

“He was still balling in Denver at times,” Travis said about Wilson. “I’ve seen him dice up some teams and make some good throws. I mean, we lost to Denver in Denver last year.”

According to ESPN stats, Wilson finished this past regular season ranked eighth in the NFL among qualified players with a 98.0 passer rating. Over 15 games, he tossed 26 touchdown passes and only eight interceptions.

Wilson agreed to a team-friendly deal to head to Pittsburgh, but it’s been made clear he will have to compete with 2022 first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett for the starting job this summer. Losing that battle to Pickett could spark the beginning of the end of Wilson’s playing career considering the Steelers aren’t married to him beyond next season.
“I think Russ has a lot of good football left in him, man,” Travis continued. “Obviously, he’s got that ‘it’ factor about him that we’ve seen so many times. Sure enough, he’ll bring some veteran presence to that locker room, and we all know how good of a coach [Mike] Tomlin is and how good that defense is. Steelers definitely just got better for sure.”

CBS Sports NFL analyst Matt Ryan believes Wilson can turn the clock back playing under new Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Dan Orlovsky of ESPN thinks the version of Wilson who featured for the 2023 Broncos could guide Pittsburgh to a playoff win next January.

As much as some fans may have scoffed at the Steelers adding Wilson to their quarterback room, plenty of former and current players believe Pittsburgh improved at the sport’s most important position this week.

Jason Kelce’s decision to retire may have been a bit premature. The center for the Philadelphia Eagles recently announced he is walking away from the game after spending 13 seasons in the city of Brotherly Love.

Wilson was benched by Broncos head coach Sean Payton for the final two games of the season. The two never saw eye to eye, which set up Wilson’s departure after a dreadful two years in Denver. The Broncos will take on an $85 million hit in dead money on its salary cap over the next two seasons because of Wilson’s release. The Broncos are also paying Wilson nearly $38 million this year to play for the Steelers, who will only pay him just over $1 million on a veteran minimum contract.

One veteran AFC personnel executive told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN that Payton never liked Wilson from Day 1.

“Sean never liked him as the guy from Day 1 and went out of his way to make that known,” the source said.

Payton ripped into Wilson on the sideline during a game in Detroit this past season. It seemed more personal than a coach just letting a player have it.

“Hopefully we see him have some more success [in Pittsburgh] knowing that the Broncos wasn’t his best tenure,’ Travis said.

Jason then replied: “It’s tough to know what happened out there in Denver.”

Travis responded, “Man, it’s football. It takes so f****ng much. So many things have to go right. They got hit with some injuries and it just wasn’t as much of a match as everyone thought it would be.”

The Philadelphia Eagles were the class of the NFC during the 2022 season, and they were on their way to defending that title last year when the team went into an end-of-season slump that cost them the NFC East title. A series of moves in the offseason — with the most important being the retirement of center Jason Kelce — may make it difficult for the Eagles to get back to a top level in the foreseeable future.

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay is one of the top players at his position. He has been in the the NFL for 11 years, and has played the last 4 seasons with the Eagles. He was effusive in his praise for Kelce, and said the long-time anchor of the team’s offensive line will be missed quite a bit.

“I called him the GOAT, and that’s something he didn’t like,” Slay said. “He said he didn’t deserve that kind of nickname because he was just a hard working player, but I still called him the GOAT. He was a great player for a long time, but it was more than that. Jason did not just say with his offensive teammates. He mixed with the defense and he was a great leader. He is appreciated by his teammates and by the city of Philadelphia.”

In the latest episode of New Heights, Kansas City Chiefs TE talked to his brother about his retirement and his future plans now that he’s decided to hang up his cleats.

In the middle of their conversation, Travis surprised his brother with a grand gesture from Drew Brees, one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL:

“In honor of Jason Kelce’s retirement and his 13 remarkable seasons, we at Walk-On’s are offering this heartfelt tribute. We are awarding 13 scholarships to college walk-on athletes across the country,” the legendary New Orleans Saints QB said.

Drew Brees is co-owner of Walk-On’s, a popular sports bar chain in Louisiana. They will be giving out the scholarships through the Walk-On’s Game On Foundation, which takes an active part in helping youth athletes grow.
