Many were overcome by the emotion of Jason Kelce’s retirement speech on Monday in South Philadelphia and others basked in the regaling of the top moments in what is sure to be the Hall of Fame career for the Philadelphia Eagles’ All-Pro center.

For this reporter, Kelce’s words about his teammates and the camaraderie of an NFL locker room hit home the most because it’s a subject I first wrote about over a decade ago.

“I want to thank my teammates, my other brothers,” Kelce said. “Oh, how I have drawn my strengths from you all. I was fortunate to play with great players. Some of the best this league has to offer. But it was really off the field, just sitting in the cafeteria with my teammates, breaking bread, and talking about life, that were some of the more meaningful times I’ve spent in my career.”

Amid a society being stressed too often untenable levels by bad actors trying to divide us by any means necessary, be it by class, race, religion, or politics, it occurred to me that an NFL locker room is one of the most inclusive places I’ve ever been privileged to witness.

Those who’ve never observed it tend to roll their eyes when that thesis has been advanced defaulting to the stereotypes that have been indoctrinated into them by those same bad actors.

How could a bunch of alpha males playing a violent sport be the most progressive of all?

Well, they are.

“The NFL is truly like no other place, and at the same time, represents America as a whole like no other,” Kelce said while trying to hold back tears. “Fat offensive linemen from Cleveland playing on the same field as skinny wide receivers from Louisiana, and kickers from Chicago. Tight ends from Stanford playing next to tackles from Kilgore Community College. Defensive ends from inner city Detroit playing next to defensive tackles from Yazoo City, Mississippi. 6–foot-9 Jordan Mailata plays the same sport as 4-foot-8 Darren Sproles.

“The melting pot of geographic location, economic background, race, body type, personality, and athletic traits of an NFL locker room is truly remarkable.”

You can turn on cable news at any point today and listen to activists from both ends of the political spectrum paying lip service to what NFL players do routinely.

The actions of those same grifters exploit differences to foster disrespect and distrust, all to garner even an extra inch of political power, intimating someone like Kelce, with his flip flops and Ocean Drive t-shirt has nothing in common with the impeccably dressed DeVonta Smith.

Or that Zach Ertz’s Stanford education places him on a higher plane than the community college Lane Johnson started at. Somehow city-dweller Brandon Graham has dressed next to country bumpkin Fletcher Cox for years while becoming the best of friends and a big, affable Aussie with an angel’s voice like Mailata can still relate to the vertically-challenged Midwestern running back with the stutter like Sproles.

It’s not magic nor is it perfect but it is something worth championing.

“We all rely on each other and respect one another, and each of our differences because we know we’re stronger together,” Kelce explained.

The next chapter will hopefully bring Kelce joy and even more success but he is keenly aware that the camaraderie with his teammates will be tough to replace in the civilian world.

“I will always cherish this brotherhood, the relationships it fostered, and how unique an experience it has been to enjoy the field with you all,” Kelce said of his teammates. “Coming to work every day with a group of men who were driven to be the best in the world at what they do is an environment that will be surely hard to replicate.”

Three times will be the charm for the Philadelphia Eagles when it comes to the heir apparent for likely future Hall of Fame center Jason Kelce, who officially announced his retirement earlier this week.

Few remember but the first transition for the six-time All-Pro center was originally penciled in as Isaac Seumalo back in 2016, the very season that sparked Kelce turning the corner from capable player to star with the help of offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

Kelce made note of that campaign in his farewell speech recalling that he thought he may be dealt for a pair of washing machines. Seumalo, who showed tremendous versatility at Oregon State, was selected in the third round and the Eagles believed center would ultimately be the Hawaiian’s best position due to his athleticism and football IQ.

When things began to click for Kelce, Seumalo slowly developed as a solid starter at guard, first on the left side and then on the right before leaving for Pittsburgh in free agency before the 2023 season.

By Seumalo’s last season with the Eagles, he had developed into a Pro Bowl alternate at LG and Stoutland often remarked it was like having two centers on the field when he and Kelce were playing next to each other.

Howie Roseman pushed pause for a few years before again going the heir-apparent route in 2021, once Kelce essentially shifted to a year-by-year thought process when it came to continuing his playing career.

In the 2021 draft, the Eagles were able to get a first-round talent with the 37th overall pick because All-American Alabama center Landon Dickerson had torn his ACL in the SEC Championship Game.

Philadelphia believed it could essentially redshirt Dickerson during his rookie campaign and allow the 333-pounder to fully rehab his injury. Instead, injuries struck the Eagles’ starters with both Brandon Brooks and Seumalo being lost early in the season.

That forced Dickerson into the lineup, first at RG and then LG where Stoutland first got a look at him playing next to the 6-foot-8, 380-pound Jordan Mailata. The knee held up and the rest is history with Stoutland quickly surmising that Dickerson would be staying right where he was, something that has resulted in consecutive Pro Bowl berths.

By 2022, it was Nebraska center Cam Jurgens with the 51st overall selection and this one even came with the Kelce stamp of approval.

“I’m pretty excited about the kid,” Kelce said about Jurgens when the latter was elected. “I liked him a lot. I like his tools. I like his mentality.”

Kelce downplayed his hand in the process of drafting Jurgens but did admit the Eagles made him aware of the plan.

“Probably overstated a little bit, my involvement in that selection,” Kelce admitted. “I’d like to probably step that back a little bit. I think I’ve looked at a few guys the last couple years when they’ve asked my opinion. But he’s here obviously because Jeff Stoutland, Howie Roseman, Nick Sirianni, all these people really watched that tape and believe in him.”

However, Kelce’s scouting report had an impression of the Eagles’ brass.

“I love looking at young guys, I love looking at guys on our team,” said Kelce. “The whole mentality of self-improvement and reaching their potential. That’s something that I certainly love being a part of. I’ve loved my own journey of that and I’d love to help other guys reach their potential.”

Behind the scenes, Kelce has been helping Jurgens for this very moment. The Nebraska product served as a luxury in his rookie season before taking a step to the right to start at RG after Seumalo left in free agency.

Jurgens performed well enough to be named a Pro Bowl alternate despite playing out of position last season but this time there was no ‘we can’t move this guy sentiment’ from Stoutland.

The third time is a charm and Jurgens will move back inside and officially be known as Kelce’s successor when the 2024 season kicks off.

“I think although he does have a lot of similar traits to me, he’s going to be his own player,” Kelce said.

Cowboys

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones addressed the frustration around Dallas’ lack of aggressiveness in free agency.

“Everybody certainly has that right,” he said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I know where the frustration is, it’s the fact that we haven’t had success in the playoffs to their satisfaction. Until we do that, then the criticism is certainly something that’s going to be there. We know that’s going to be there, but we’re going to stick with what we believe will ultimately get us a championship here for our fans. We don’t define ‘all in’ by what you spend in free agency. It’s keeping the core (together).”

Jones also talked about QB Dak Prescott‘s potential contract extension along with where they stand in the RB market.

“Dak’s been willing to work with us. We’ve had good discussions about him and his contract,” Jones said, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “He’s all-in in working with us, and we’ve had personal discussions with Dak as well. Other than that, that’s all we’ll say about that, our negotiations with him. We want to keep that private. Won’t get into timelines, but certainly a priority of ours.”

“This is an organization that has been built on great backs, whether it’s Tony Dorsett, Herschel Walker, Emmitt Smith, Ezekiel Elliott or Tony Pollard. We’re big believers in backs. They bring a lot to the table. Unfortunately, we’re at a point where we have to make some decisions in terms of where we allocate dollars. … We feel like there’s going to be ways to address the running back situation in a more efficient way. We’ll see how that works out.”

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie reflected on C Jason Kelce‘s career and said it would be hard to imagine him not suiting up for the team.

“Today is a bittersweet day, because while it is hard to imagine the Eagles taking the field without Jason Kelce in uniform, we are also excited to celebrate his career and support him as his journey continues,” Lurie said during Kelce’s retirement, via PFT. “Although Jason is retiring from the NFL, I have no doubt that he will continue to be successful in everything he does, and his impact on our organization and this city will reverberate for many years to come.”

She took the other dancers’ hands and impressed everyone with her dancing skills.
