“Made Millions Off their Back”: Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen Thrown Into Phil Jackson Drama by Ex-NBA Star

13x NBA Champion Phil Jackson has been facing heat from the hoops community since his controversial take on the league. Jackson is arguably the most successful coach in NBA history, training legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and Scottie Pippen, among many others. However, the recent issue took center stage when a former NBA star, who has been very critical in the past, hit back at Jackson through a video message on social media.

The Zen Master coached the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers in his 22-year-long coaching career. He ended his long-standing coaching stint in 2011. Since then, the legendary coach had been off the media attention until the release of the docuseries, The Last Dance, in 2020. And now, he has again attracted the attention of the media by criticizing the NBA for its political stance.

Phil Jackson faces heat from Ex-NBA star

In a recent podcast episode of Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin, Phil Jackson spoke extensively about his journey in the NBA. However, during one of the segments, he made a controversial statement. Jackson revealed that he stopped watching the NBA since the bubble. He reasoned that he didn’t like the politics involved in the league during the bubble.

In response to his statement, former Bulls star, Jalen Rose, posted a video message addressing Phil Jackson’s statement. Rose started his message by mentioning the fact that Jackson is one of the greatest coaches of all time. However, he wasn’t appreciative of his recent comments.

He added, “The same Phil Jackson that won championships with some of the greatest black athletes… Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, made millions on their backs.

Rose continued, “You’re sitting and watching the game with grandkids and y’all think it’s funny when justice passes the ball to equal opportunity.” He further insisted Jackson stop watching the game if he didn’t support it.

This isn’t the first time where Rose had made a bold statement against an NBA personality. He had lashed out at Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons some time back.

Jalen Rose’s sly dig at Ben Simmons

The former Bulls star has always put forward his opinions ever since he started his stint as an NBA analyst. At the beginning of this year, he made a harsh comment on the Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons. Rose criticized the star for his underperformance in the absence of Kevin Durant, who missed several games due to an injury. He accused Simmons of stealing money from the Nets.

He said, “Ben Simmons is stealing money [from the Nets], ski mask, and gloves.” Eventually, the Nets suffered a massive downfall since the departure of Kyrie Irving and Durant. The Philadelphia 76ers eliminated the Nets with a clean sweep in the first round.

Travis echoed the sentiment by calling “New Heights” listeners “the best fanbase in the entire world.”

“You guys make this show what it is,” the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, continued. “We truly appreciate it. Thank you again to [the] iHeartPodcast Awards. To the 92 percenters, thank you guys as well.”

Every week on their podcast, Jason and Travis debate exciting topics, give next-level NFL access and share plenty of fun tidbits about their personal lives.

In recent months, fans have also been able to get a perspective on Travis’ relationship with Swift, 34, that may not have been possible without the podcast.

After attending Swift’s Eras tour stop in July 2023, Travis complained during a “New Heights” episode that he didn’t get a chance to meet the singer and give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number.

The pair went public with their relationship just two months later, with Swift admitting that the move got her attention.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” she said in her December 2023 TIME profile. “We actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other.”

As Travis’ relationship with Swift remains strong, so does his bond with his brother.

In a recent interview, Jason expressed how special it is to spend quality time with Travis away from the football field.

“Before this, we would go months on our own deal without talking,” he said on the February 9 episode of the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast. “We would text, you would send a funny video or something like that. But truly sit down and talk with him? It would be a long time. Doing this once a week, we’re gonna sit down and talk, and we’re gonna have very meaningful conversations, fun conversations and really know where each of us are at in their lives. That’s the most fun part about it.”

The fact that listeners from all around the world enjoy it is just the cherry on top.

“We absolutely love making this podcast each and every week,” Jason said during his acceptance speech, “and it is beyond rewarding when we get to find out that it resonates with so many people out there and they get joy out of it because we sure put a lot of that into it.”

Kelce continued, “It took a lot of hardwork and determination getting here. I have been the underdog my entire career, and I mean this when I say it, I wish I still was. Few things give me such joy as proving someone wrong.”

Kelce played center for the Eagles throughout his entire NFL career.

“It has always been a goal of mine to play my whole career in one city. I couldn’t have dreamt a better one and a better fit if I tried,” he added during the announcement. “I don’t know what’s next, but I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities that await, and I know that I carry with me the lessons for my time here and that forever we shall all share the bond of being Philadelphians.”

As Jason said his tearful goodbye to the Eagles, parents Donna and Ed Kelce, wife Kylie Kelce and brother Travis Kelce sat in the front row.

“You’ve always been a step ahead of me in this game … it’s always been like I’ve had that flotation device right there and to have you out of it, it feels empty,” Travis, 34, later told his older brother during the Wednesday, March 6, episode of their podcast. “And it feels like it’s complete. It was a success. It was a fun ass journey to watch. I just appreciate you showing me the way and bringing us all along the journey with you.”

Jason Kelce announces decision about his playing career

Jason Kelce operated in a matter at the end of last season that suggested he is done playing in the NFL, and the longtime Philadelphia Eagles veteran has finally confirmed his plans.

Kelce announced his retirement on Monday. The 36-year-old fought back tears before he shared the news in a press conference.

After the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the opening round of the playoffs, there were reports that Kelce would not return in 2024.

The center was shown by ESPN’s cameras looking very emotional on the sideline late in that game. Kelce later went out of his way to thank a group of Eagles fans who attended the game.

Kelce, the older brother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, played 13 seasons and made seven Pro Bowls and five All-Pro teams. He became even more highly regarded over the last half of his career, which is when he made all his All-Pro teams.

Kelce won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017 and then reached another Super Bowl in 2022.

While some believed Kelce would have a change of heart and play another season, even one of his teammates saw the writing on the wall.

The Eagles began last season 10-1 before losing six of their last seven games. They have undergone several significant changes already this offseason, and Kelce might not be their only former All-Pro to call it a career.

    Jason Kelce officially retires

    By Nikki Chavanelle

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce held a press conference on Monday afternoon to officially announce his plan to retire after 13 seasons in the NFL. The lineman hosted the press conference at the Eagles facility with friends, family, coaches and teammates in attendance.

Kelce put together a decorated career for the Eagles after they selected him in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati. He became a six-time All-Pro selection and a seven-time Pro Bowler as a key part of the Philadelphia offensive line and he seemed to get better and better with age.

Joining the Eagles’ offensive line as a rookie pushing an incumbent starter, Kelce won the job during his first preseason. He went on to become the first rookie in Eagles history to start all 16 games at center. Partial MCL and ACL tears in 2012 knocked him out for most of his second year but he returned to start all 16 games in 2013.

After earning All-Pro First Team honors in 2017, Kelce helped the Eagles clinch a victory in Super Bowl LII, defeating the New England Patriots 41–33. It took several seasons but he made it back to the Super Bowl with Philadelphia in 2022, but lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, and his brother Travis. He toyed with retirement after that loss but opted to return for another chance at the Lombardi Trophy in 2023.

Kelce’s career earnings over 13 seasons in the league top $81.7 million, according to Spotrac. His $14.25 million salary in 2023 made him the highest-paid center in the NFL last season.

All that to say: Jason Kelce has plenty of money to do whatever he wishes after his football career of more than a dozen seasons.
