LeBron James is a longtime supporter of the Ohio State basketball team.

The Buckeyes, however, did not make the NCAA men’s basketball tournament this year.

James’ oldest son, Bronny James, plays for USC, but the Trojans’ season ended with their 70-49 loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 tournament quarterfinals last week.

Nonetheless, James still has a rooting interest during March Madness. The Lakers superstar appears to be putting his support behind a private Catholic school from Pittsburgh making its first NCAA tournament appearance in 47 years.

It’s not as random as it may sound. The Duquesne Dukes, surprise winners of the Atlantic-10 Conference tournament last weekend, are led by head coach Keith Dambrot and associate head coach Dru Joyce III.

As the No. 11 seed in the East Regional, the Dukes defeated No. 6 Brigham Young 71-67 on Thursday and advanced to the second round, where they will face the No. 3 Illinois-No. 14 Morehead State winner Saturday.

Long before James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, Dambrot was his coach and Joyce was his teammate and close friend in Akron, Ohio, first at a youth basketball clinic and then at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

James gave a shout-out to his two old friends Sunday after Duquesne defeated Virginia Commonwealth 57-51 in the Atlantic-10 championship game to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1977.

“YESSIRRR!! Punch that to the Big Dance @DuqMBB!!!” James wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Love you Coach Dambrot & @CoachDruJoyce.”

James also retweeted a post from Duquesne that showed Dambrot after cutting down the net and was captioned: “Keith Dambrot. Mission Accomplished.”

“THE BEST!!!!!!” James wrote, along with several raised hand emojis.

Dambrot told reporters Monday that he received a congratulatory call from James the previous evening.

“It just shows how much he cares about us,” Dambrot said. “When a superstar like him calls you after a game, that means something, right?”

On Wednesday, Duquesne tweeted a video of its players each receiving a pair of James’ signature Nike shoes, a gift from the four-time NBA champion.

“Appreciate it King,” the university’s account wrote, tagging James.

James replied: “Yessir!! Best of luck guys!!”

Senior guard Dae Dae Grant scored 19 points Thursday against BYU, as the Dukes won an NCAA tournament game for the first time since 1969. Senior guard Jimmy Clark III, who could be seen wearing the sneakers gifted by James, finished with 11 points, four steals and four assists.

James tweeted about the win immediately after the game ended. “AYYYYYYYEEEEE!!! First tournament win in 55 years!” he wrote. “@CoachDambrot @DuqMBB. Keep it going.”

AYYYYYYYEEEEE!!! First tournament win in 55 years! @CoachDambrot 🐐 @DuqMBB 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Keep it going

When he first crossed paths with James, Dambrot was several years removed from a scandal that had derailed his once-promising coaching career. In 1993, during Dambrot’s second season as head coach at Central Michigan, he used the N-word during a speech to his team. He is said to have asked for and received permission from his players, most of whom were Black, to use the term in that instance.

Word got out, however, and Dambrot was fired. He filed (and eventually lost) a wrongful termination lawsuit against Central Michigan citing a too-vague policy against discriminatory language, with every Black player on the team joining the suit in support of their former coach, the Cleveland Scene reported in 2000.

Unable to find another job in coaching, Dambrot became a stockbroker and started running a youth basketball clinic at a Jewish community center in Akron. That’s where he met a 13-year-old James, who much later wrote about getting to know Dambrot and the circumstances surrounding his firing from Central Michigan before making any judgment about him.

“According to court records, he said he had used the term to connote ‘a person who is fearless, mentally strong and tough,’ in the same vein that players themselves used the term in referring to one another,” James wrote, along with co-author Buzz Bissinger, in a book excerpt that appeared in Vanity Fair in 2009.

“At least eight black players on the team subsequently said that Dambrot had always treated them fairly. I believe them, because I got to know Coach Dambrot as well as anybody and never ever did I see him act in any way that was racist. It just wasn’t in the man.”

James, Royce and their teammates grew close with Dambrot, who landed the coaching job at St. Vincent-St. Mary in 1998. That group joined their coach at the high school the following year and won state titles during James’ freshman and sophomore seasons, before Dambrot left to take an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, the University of Akron.

“I’m just thankful to have the relationship with him,” Dambrot said of James during Monday’s news conference. “He’s a better — this is a hard statement — he’s a better human being than he is a basketball player, which tells you a lot. He did a lot for our community.”

Dambrot was named head coach at Akron in 2004 and led the Zips to three NCAA tournament bids (but no tournament wins) over the next 13 seasons. In 2017, he took the head coaching job at Duquesne, where his father had played for the then-national powerhouse Dukes in the 1950s.

On Monday, the 65-year-old coach announced he will be stepping down when the Dukes’ March Madness run comes to an end.

He said that he was 80% sure this would be his final season over the summer and then later became 100% convinced when his wife, Donna Dambrot, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though Donna is well enough to travel with the Dukes this week, Dambrot told reporters, “I think it’s time” to step away.

Dambrot informed school officials and his assistants of his plan months ago but told few others. He didn’t even tell his most famous former player during their phone conversation Sunday night.

Even so, Dambrot said of James, “he knows me well enough to kind of have an inkling that this was going to be it for me.”

James continues to try and drag the Los Angeles Lakers to better results

    LeBron James.

On Sunday, LeBron James unveiled his frustration with the basketball media, prompting him to embark on his latest venture, the “Mind the Game” podcast alongside NBA player-turned-analyst JJ Redick.

Addressing reporters following the LA Lakers‘ 150-145 victory against the Indiana Pacers, where he notched 26 points and 10 assists, LeBron expressed his desire to offer basketball enthusiasts content that stays true to the sport’s core values.

Draymond Green Says he has ‘Bone to Pick’ with LeBron James after podcast launch

He emphasized the importance of focusing on substance over sensationalism, steering away from incessant comparisons and hypothetical scenarios that often overshadow the essence of the game.

“I felt like we were drifting away from the fundamental aspects of basketball and its true essence,” LeBron remarked.

“There’s more to the game than constant comparisons or speculating about legacies. It’s not beneficial for the younger generation.”

Driven by a desire to provide authentic basketball knowledge to the NBA audience, LeBron aims to foster a genuine appreciation for the game’s intricacies and strategic nuances.

“Our audience deserves a deeper insight into the essence of basketball, akin to how I fell in love with the sport,” LeBron explained.

“Teaming up with JJ, who shares a similar passion and intellect for the game, felt like the perfect opportunity.”

In heralding the launch of their podcast, LeBron emphasized its appeal to “everyone who truly loves our beautiful game.”

How often will James’ podcast release?

Moving forward, LeBron James and JJ Redick‘s podcast is set to release weekly episodes, each ranging between 45 minutes to an hour. The inaugural episode featured discussions on specific basketball plays and strategies, offering a critical analysis of tactics like the two-for-one strategy.

Determined to stand out from conventional basketball podcasts, James and Redick aspire to provide in-depth insights into offenses, defenses, and various basketball strategies. They plan to dissect players’ techniques and how they contribute to the execution of plays effectively.

As they chart their podcasting journey, LeBron and Redick intend to invite guests to share their perspectives, further enriching the podcast’s mission to enlighten and engage basketball enthusiasts worldwide.

  • Lakers’ LeBron James to sit out vs. Bucks with ankle injury

Lakers’ LeBron James to sit out vs. Bucks with ankle injury

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will not play against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday because of left ankle soreness, the team announced Tuesday.

James, who was downgraded after originally being listed as doubtful, has been dealing with the ankle issue for months. He also missed a game against Milwaukee on March 8 in which Spencer Dinwiddie started in James’ place.

James played 38 minutes in the Lakers’ 150-145 win over the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, contributing 26 points and 10 assists.

“Just like our remaining game schedule, I’m just taking things one day at a time, man,” coach Darvin Ham said when asked if James’ ankle could cause him to miss more games down the stretch. “I don’t want to jump out ahead and mislead you guys into believing something that’s not going to happen, that’s not true. And so again, it’s go as tolerated. And after the [Pacers] game, he was experiencing some significant discomfort. And so again, he’s getting treatment around the clock. And once he wakes up in the morning, we’ll have another update.”

The Bucks game is the start of a six-game road trip for the Lakers, who are No. 9 in the Western Conference with 11 games left to play. Los Angeles is three games behind the Phoenix Suns for the No. 6 spot in the conference, which it would need to secure to avoid the play-in tournament. The Lakers are 2.5 games ahead of the 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors.

Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell, who missed the Indiana game with a non-COVID illness, is not on the injury report against Milwaukee.

  • LeBron James explains why he launched ‘Mind the Game’ podcast with JJ Redick

LeBron James explains why he launched ‘Mind the Game’ podcast with JJ Redick

“I was getting frustrated with the daily comparisons, every single day,”

The Mind the Game podcast from LeBron James and JJ Redick is already a hit after just one episode, and on Sunday evening James explained why he took on the project in the first place.

For James, it was a matter of encouraging detailed conversation about the game and the culture around it rather than debating history and legacies 24/7.

“I thought we were losing the essence of the game of basketball and the true meaning behind the game of basketball, and teaching our youth and teaching people what the game of basketball truly means,” James told Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

I asked LeBron about what sparked the idea to launch the “Mind The Game” podcast this week and why he partnered with J.J. Redick: pic.twitter.com/lrp4aPeUp5

    — Jovan Buha (@jovanbuha) March 25, 2024

James took a shot at debate shows and talking heads as well.

“I was getting frustrated with the daily comparisons, every single day,” James said. “Who’s better … or how does this affect your legacy? Or if this played in the ’50s, would he be this? Or if this guy in the ’50s played in the 2000s. It’s not good for the youth. Obviously if you want to hear that you can go to the barbershops, but you’re hearing it every day on national television. But I felt like our audience needed a different approach to understand the true essence of the game and how I fell in love with the game.”

As for Redick being the cohost, it sounds as if James simply appreciated that Redick was already creating this kind of content and had a production staff ready to snap into action.

“You have someone like JJ who has kind of the same mindset about the game of basketball, very smart, fell in love with the game for all the right reasons,” James explained. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for quite a while, but it just felt like perfect timing.”

The second episode of Mind the Game will be out Tuesday.

  • LeBron James says watching son, Bronny, play at USC gives him ‘anxiety’

LeBron James says watching son, Bronny, play at USC gives him ‘anxiety’

LeBron James also explained his gripe with college basketball play

LeBron James didn’t hold back his thoughts about college basketball, and specifically his son, Bronny James, playing at USC.

On the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast with co-host JJ Redick, James revealed that he has anxiety watching his son play this season, his freshman year with the Trojans.

“The NBA is the best league in the world,” the Los Angeles Lakers superstar said. “That’s why it’s hard to watch my son play college basketball. … It is hard watching a 40-minute college basketball game. It’s hard. I get more anxiety and I sweat more watching college basketball, especially my son now, than I’ve ever done in my life.”

James never played college basketball, making the jump from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio, to the NBA as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The college game is certainly different from the NBA, but James shared his gripes with the lower level, and they’re pretty in depth.

“I’ve never understood why a coach will throw the ball into the post with his big with no business with the ball in the post,” he explained. “The only time the ball should go into the post with the big is if he, automatically, as soon as he catches it, flattens the defense, and he goes right back to the DHO (dribble hand off) uphill, roll — if he’s not a pocket passer, you can’t throw it low, throw it to the rim — or it’s his job is to just shrink the defense cause his role is so dynamic.

“I watch college games and I see guys throw the ball in the post to guys, and they’ll turn around and shoot a jump shot or a running left-handed jump hook.”

Bronny dealt with a cardiac arrest before the start of the season, which was a scary moment for the James family. He was able to recover and play in 25 games this season for a Trojans squad that struggled. He missed the first eight games.

He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 19.4 minutes per game for USC.

The biggest question now for Bronny is whether he will enter the 2024 NBA Draft with the Trojans’ season over.

“It’s up to him,” LeBron said during NBA All-Star Weekend. “It’s up to the kid. Obviously, we gonna go through the whole process. He’s still in season now, has the Pac-12 tournament coming up. … We gonna weigh our options, and we gonna let the kid make the decision.”

The elder James has noted wanting to play with his son in the league, and the Lakers have shown interest in potentially drafting Bronny to keep LeBron in Los Angeles.
