Lakers’ LeBron James: Not Sure When I’ll Retire But ‘I Don’t Have Much Time Left’

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, who recorded a career-high-tying nine three-pointers during Sunday’s win Brooklyn Nets, says the time he has left in the NBA is “not very long.”

“I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure,” James said after Sunday’s win, per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha. “But, not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far when I’ll retire, but I don’t have much time left.”

LeBron James on how long he expects to continue playing in the NBA: “Not very long. … I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. But not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire. But I don’t have much time left.” pic.twitter.com/OtJzM6cheI

James racked up 40 points while adding seven rebounds and five assists in the Lakers’ 116-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

The Lakers star, who turned 39 in December, has a $54.1 million player option on his contract for the 2024-25 season.

After the option, James is currently set to become an unrestricted free agent following the end of the 2024-25 season.

James is averaging over 25 points per game for the 20th straight season during a campaign that led him to become the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 points.

Because he’s been in the league since age 18, James has been an NBA player for longer than he hasn’t been an NBA player, as noted by USA Today‘s Jim Sergent and Ramon Padilla.

James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin in January 2023 that he wanted to wait to retire until he was able to play with his son, Bronny, who recently finished his freshman season at USC.

That was before Bronny suffered cardiac arrest during a summer workout, leading to emergency surgery and a delay to his USC debut. He finished the season having averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 assists in 19.3 minutes through 25 games, mostly off the bench.

James’ son has not yet decided whether he will be entering the 2024 draft, with his agent Rich Paul saying it depends on which teams are interested in drafting him, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Bronny’s future in the NBA, it remains to be seen if his draft year will influence James’ decision to sign a new contract.

For now, the Lakers will hope James chooses to keep playing in Los Angeles next season. The option decision deadline is June 29, according to Spotrac.

  • Lakers Stage Jaw-Dropping Comeback sans LeBron James, Seize Double-OT Victory over Bucks

Lakers Stage Jaw-Dropping Comeback sans LeBron James, Seize Double-OT Victory over Bucks

With only eleven games remaining in the regular season, the Los Angeles Lakers began a six-game road journey against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. If they wish to climb the standings, the time is now or never.

LeBron James was sidelined against the Bucks for the second time in the last two weeks due to a persistent ankle injury. The Lakers defeated the Bucks in Los Angeles without James, and they did so once more in Milwaukee by staging an extraordinary return to win 128-124 in double overtime.

The Bucks held a 12-2 advantage after Giannis Antetokounmpo helped his team get off to a quick start with seven early points while the Lakers labored offensively.

The Lakers responded with a second goal by Rui Hachimura following a timeout; however, they continued to struggle offensively as the Bucks extended their lead.

Anthony Davis eventually provided the Los Angeles Clippers with some much-needed goals, including a monster putback dunk that tied the game at the buzzer. Despite this, the Lakers trailed 32-16 after one quarter stood.

As the Lakers began to gain momentum offensively, Taurean Prince opened the second quarter with five fast points; however, Antetokounmpo responded with a three-point play.

However, D’Angelo Russell also began to improve as the Lakers continued to reduce their substantial deficit. They narrowed the deficit to six points before struggling to close out the half as Antetokounmpo dominated inside and Damian Lillard made a three-pointer to extend the Bucks’ lead to 58-42 at halftime.

Russell scored three triples in the third quarter as the Lakers reestablished some distance. The deficit was reduced to seven points after Reaves made a three-pointer, but former Laker Malik Beasley made a crucial three-pointer for the Bucks.

After another lethargic quarter-ending, the Lakers fell further behind as Antetokounmpo converted a putback to extend Milwaukee’s lead to 88-74.

As the fourth quarter commenced, the Bucks extended their lead further, while the Lakers appeared to be running out of steam. In an effort to score an additional run, Russell and Reaves each hit triples. A few costly turnovers were committed by Antetokounmpo, and Reaves converted those into layups to reduce the deficit to five.

However, following a timely timeout called by Doc Rivers, his squad tallied five consecutive points to regain the lead. However, the Lakers responded once more, battling back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game at 101 in the final minute.

The Lakers managed to survive a series of questionable decisions from the officials and force overtime with the score tied at 101.

Beasley opened the scoring in overtime with a corner triple, but Davis and Spencer Dinwiddie answered with consecutive three-pointers to give the Lakers their first lead. Beasley then tied the game in the final minute with another corner triple.

Hachimura extended the Lakers’ advantage with a well-executed baseline layup, but Lillard closed the gap with a corner triple with 13.6 seconds remaining. The Bucks had an opportunity to win on the buzzer following two free throws by Russell, but Lillard’s attempt was blocked by Davis to force the game into double overtime.

Both teams entered the second overtime with exhausted legs, as the score remained deadlocked entering the final forty seconds of play. At that moment, Reaves made an additional colossal three-pointer from Los Angeles, and Antetokounmpo failed to make two from the line.

At that juncture, the Bucks were compelled to commit fouls; Russell and Davis each completed a pair in order to force overtime and challenge the Bucks’ remarkable comeback.

NBA free agency is three months away, and plenty of stars have decisions to make

There are less than two weeks left in the 2023-24 regular season, so that means we’re inching ever closer to every NBA fan’s favorite time of year. No, not the playoffs. Free agency. The fan-favorite period is almost exactly three months away, and it’s never too early to think about the bonanza beginning.

This year’s free-agent crop is shrouded in question marks, but as it stands right now we could have an absolute whopper of a class, led by one of the most popular names in American sports history. That’s right, LeBron James has gone out of his way to remain ambiguous regarding his future with the Los Angeles Lakers. He’s the proud owner of a crisp $51 million player option this summer. All indications are that James wants to finish out his career as a Laker, but crazier things have happened.

There are several other players who could technically be available this summer who are likely to stay put — Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Pascal Siakam, Jrue Holiday — but if any number of them decides to test the waters, we could have an extremely exciting free-agency period. Even if their names are all off the board, there are unrestricted free agents like James Harden, Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan who will be the subject of much intrigue.

While things will undoubtedly change over the next couple of months, here are the top 30 NBA players who could be available in the 2024 offseason.

Larry Bird calls LeBron James one of the greats, ‘if not the greatest ever’

Boston Celtics fans aren’t known for their admiration or love for Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James. Since James joined the league in 2003, he’s been a villain and foil for Boston, but one member of the Celtics orbit thinks it’s time for fans to soften their criticism and embrace James. Hall of Famer Larry Bird recently explained why he thinks fans across the NBA need to celebrate the 39-year-old James.

“Quit whining about LeBron,” Bird said. “Enjoy him while he’s here. He’s unbelievable. He’s one of the greatest, if not the greatest ever.”

You can check out Bird’s full comments concerning James on YouTube, courtesy of Hoop Dreams.

  • At age 39, LeBron James scores 40 points, leading Lakers to win over Nets

At age 39, LeBron James scores 40 points, leading Lakers to win over Nets

The Lakers required a “get-right game” to conclude this six-game trip following their season-high five-game winning streak was snapped by the Indiana Pacers on Friday. This was in advance of a back-to-back stretch.

LeBron James led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center on Sunday. James tallied a season-high 40 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter.

James stated, “When you’re winning and in the zone, it’s an incredible sensation.” “That is the utmost importance to me.”

The Lakers (42-33) controlled the early stages of the contest, including holding the Nets scoreless for the first half of the first quarter, which gave them an early 17-0 lead. They extended that lead to 31-7 later in the quarter, and ultimately held a 72-46 advantage early in the third.

However, Cam Thomas (30 points and six assists) ensured that the Nets did not go down meekly by directing a 9-2 run that reduced Brooklyn’s fourth-quarter deficit to 90-79. One-eighth of the Lakers’ turnovers in the second half (11 in the third) assisted the Nets in regaining the lead.

Ham stated, “Dropped the rope in terms of our actions that established the lead.” “Exited in the third quarter after committing an excessive number of turnovers.”

Thomas made a three-pointer to reduce the Lakers’ lead to 90-82 to begin the fourth quarter.

    Thereafter, James assumed control.

James scored consecutive three-pointers to give the Lakers a 96-82 lead with 10:50 remaining.

James maintained the Nets’ defense under duress by accumulating five points in the following three minutes prior to making his third and fourth three-pointers of the contest, one of which was a fadeaway from the right wing that gave the Lakers a 111-93 lead with 6:21 remaining.

With 2:57 remaining and the Lakers leading 114-98, he substituted out to a standing ovation from the Barclays Center patrons.

“In response to the fans’ appreciation, I simply strive to return the game to them,” James stated. “It was received exceptionally well. “I simply endeavor to provide reciprocation by engaging in high-level gameplay of the game that I most ardently enjoy.”

Similar to his career-high of nine 3s he attempted against the Clippers on January 24, 2023, James went 9-for-10 on three-pointers against the Nets.

“It is astounding,” exclaimed Ham. “Before his final stretch, I informed him in the huddle, and although we ultimately substituted him out, I am eternally grateful that he brought the cape along on the road trip.” “All nine of those threes were required.”

On threes, James is shooting a career-high 41.6%.

“On non-game days, I’ve been able to spend significantly more time on the floor,” James said. “My foot feels considerably improved. Last year, I didn’t have much time to revise extensively. There have been numerous occasions for me to be on the floor. You presumably observe me on the floor prior to each game, honing my craft and preparing for the contest. Thus, that has also been of great assistance. And simply attempting to maintain shot consistency by performing the exact same shot each time. “And simply work.”

14 rebounds and 24 points (9-for-12 shooting) were contributed by Anthony Davis. Rui Hachimura recorded a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds). Austin Reaves had twelve points, seven rebounds, and six assists, whereas D’Angelo Russell concluded with eighteen points, six rebounds, and six assists.

With two exceptions, all but two points of the Lakers’ total scoring came from their starters.

Gabe Vincent, who returned to the court after missing the previous 46 contests due to knee surgery on December 27, scored the only point for the bench with two.

The Lakers conclude their three-games, four-night road journey with games against the Washingtоn Wizards on Wednesday and the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.

Davis stated, “You must find a way” in reference to the forthcoming back-to-back. “Our constant objective is to improve our standings and secure victories in basketball contests. However, the schedule remаins unchanged. There is no action that can be taken in response. We must ensure that we get sufficient recovery and prepare for two other teams in the same position that also have capable players.

“However, we must enter with the same strategy of establishing a quick defensive start and obtaining stops.” However, we must also learn from [Sunday] that we must improve our performance in the second half, in particular. And with a stronger start to the second half, we can maintain our lead while allowing our young players to play while our starters and some role players recover.”

James shares heartfelt message of gratitude to his resilient mother on his 55th birthday

The legendary Los Angeles Lakers player LeBron James just wrote a heartfelt letter to his mother, who is now 55 years old and raised him in spite of all the difficulties.

The superstar player for the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James, was born in the little Ohio city of Akron. Additionally, he was the sole child of Gloria Marie James, who raised him in spite of the fact that the odds were against them and worked very hard to provide him with a stable environment. James credits his mother’s influence for both his great achievement and his reputation as a role model. Furthermore, he had recently given his 54-year-old mother a touching note.

When LeBron James was born in 1984, his mother was only sixteen years old. Gloria lived with her mother, which meant that the James family had to put up with an unfavorable situation. But it was a sad tragedy—James was only 19 when Mom passed away unexpectedly.

Gloria James was consequently compelled to raise her child by herself. As the sole caregiver, she had to make tough decisions and exert significant extra effort to provide her son with a stable environment. LeBron James and his mother still have a very close relationship now as a direct result of this.

LeBron James gives his mother a moving message.

Mom of LeBron James recently shared a message on social media expressing her love for her son. “My truest blessing,” she wrote as the caption on a picture of the two. God could not have provided me with a greater person. I adore you, my son. James also added, “I LOVE YOU MORE MAMA!” after reposting his mother’s post on his narrative.
