Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has a million accolades to his name. Two-time MVP. Four-time champion. The all-time leader in threes made. A Finals MVP. A nine-time All-Star. And, as of very recently, a nine-time All-NBA selection.

Just to name a few.

And he just added another accolade to his name. It may not be as shiny, or standout as much on eventual resume in the Hall of Fame, but it might mean almost as much to him, given how much he talks about wanting his legacy to extend beyond basketball.

On Thursday, Curry was announced as the 2022-23 winner of the Professional Basketball Writers Association J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award.

The PBWA describes the award as being “Named after the NBA’s second commissioner, the honor is presented annually by the PBWA to a player, coach or athletic trainer who shows outstanding service and dedication to the community.” In a press release, they highlighted the work of Steph and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, his discussions regarding equality when meeting with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris during the Warriors trip to the White House, and his frequent willingness to meet with fans all over the country.

The president of the PBWA, Howard Beck, was quoted in the press release as saying, “Few athletes have as great a reach or as powerful a platform as Steph Curry, and he has used it to the fullest to benefit others. The members of the Professional Basketball Writers Association salute him and the other nominees for their exemplary work.”

It wasn’t a season fully devoid of controversy for Curry, who got caught up in the FTX crypto controversy, and drew criticism for his NIMBY stance regarding housing plans in Atherton, where he lives.

But even his harshest critics will concede that he did far more good than bad in the community, taking time all year to meet with fans, promote equality and equity, and work tirelessly on community outreach and philanthropic projects.

Curry is the first Warriors player to win the award, which was introduced for the 1974-75 seasons. The other finalists this year were Wenyen Gabriel of the Los Angeles Lakers, Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics.

When Ayesha Curry first started dating her NBA superstar husband Stephen, his palate was admittedly limited.

“He was a frozen pizza, chicken tenders, alfredo pasta type of guy,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday. After nearly five years of marriage, her skills in the kitchen have opened up a wide range of cuisine for him. “Now he eats sashimi,” she says. “He’s really broadened his horizons. It’s incredible.”

With her first cookbook, The Seasoned Life (out in September), an upcoming Cooking Channel show and a pop-up restaurant in their hometown of San Francisco, Ayesha, 27, is quickly racking up her credentials on the culinary scene. “I am a firm believer that food makes people feel something. It makes people feel good, warm and happy,” she says. “That’s the most rewarding thing for me, when someone takes that first bite and I see a smile. It’s probably the same adrenaline rush Steph gets when he plays a game.”

Despite her culinary chops, Ayesha considers herself a “relaxed lifestyle expert” who doesn’t obsess over making everything Pinterest-perfect. “Entertaining gives me anxiety,” she admits. “I’m the most disorganized person on the face of the planet but the whole message I’m trying to send is that’s normal. You can have organized chaos and that’s okay.”

1 mango, peeled and chopped (about 1 ½ cups)
¾ cup sugar, divided
4 ¼ cups water, divided
1 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 8 lemons)
1 tsp. bitters, such as Angostura

1. Process the mango, ¼ cup of the sugar, and ¼ cup of the water in a blender until smooth. (This will make the puree for the lemonade.)

2. Combine the lemon juice, bitters, and the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 4 cups water in a 2-quart pitcher; stir until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the puree. Serve over ice in tall glasses.

NBA star Stephen Curry’s little sister Sydel Curry-Lee is forging her own path.

The youngest of three siblings, Sydel was born in 1994 into a basketball family. Her father, Dell Curry, played in the NBA for nearly two decades, while her older brothers Stephen and Seth are both professional basketball players.

“People underestimating me is pretty much my life from the moment I started playing sports to now,” the former college volleyball player told Togethxr in 2020. When she walked around her college campus, she heard her classmates whispering, “Oh, that’s Steph Curry’s sister.”

But since graduating from Elon University in 2017, Sydel has pursued many interests, including running a lifestyle blog, launching a podcast and advocating for mental health. She is also a wife to NBA player Damion Lee and a soon-to-be mother of two.

“I feel like I’ve done a really good job at creating my own person and creating my own identity outside of my brothers,” she said.

She played volleyball in college

While Sydel didn’t follow in her family’s footsteps when it came to basketball, she did play volleyball at Elon University from 2014 to 2016. She was redshirted as a freshman due to a dislocated knee cap and started playing in 2014.

She was underestimated a lot during college, Sydel recalled, with some people even questioning her talent. “I remember one of the first things I ever heard when I was playing volleyball is, ‘You’re only here because of your family.’ “

Sydel was named the team’s MVP in 2016, the same year she was named NCCSIA First Team All-State. However, she retired from volleyball in 2017 after an injury.

“I have dedicated so much of my life, my identity, to my sport. As an athlete and a competitor, I will always want to put my sport before a lot of things,” she wrote on Facebook. “I never thought that my first grown-up decision about my future would be something so difficult.”

She graduated with a degree in psychology the same year.

She’s a big advocate for mental health

Sydel is using her platform for good. She’s very open on her Instagram account and on her own blog, “A Curry Girl,” about her own struggles with mental health.

“I’ve always had a passion for mental health, not that I’ve had to deal with it on my own. I’ve always been curious about the mind and helping others but I really want, literally in a sense, to save lives,” she told Essence in 2020. “We’ve seen in the past week or so how many people have taken their lives because [they were] at a point in their life that they thought it’s never going to get better. So with my brand called A Curry Girl and the platform that I have, that’s all I want to do is just change the stigma behind [people] being not being able to speak about how you’re feeling and not being in a culture where social media is just about jokes and people not taking other people seriously.”

In May 2021, Sydel launched a podcast called Because Life, which “aims to de-stigmatize the discussion around mental health and offer first-hand advice on how we can all discuss the subject better as well as things we can do to improve our mental health,” per the podcast’s description.

Recently in March 2023, she spoke to Ferrum College about the importance of mental health. “Dusted off my speechin’ skills and spoke to @ferrum_college students today! I left feeling so encouraged by the progress that’s being made in colleges and universities by creating safe spaces for students to feel seen and heard in their mental health journeys,” she wrote on Instagram.

She’s married to NBA player Damion Lee

Sydel and her now-husband Damion Lee, who plays for the Phoenix Suns, met at a college basketball game while she was at Elon University and he was a student at Drexel University.

“He was walking up the stairs, I was sitting in the stands and we kind of made eye contact,” she told Munaluchi Bride. After exchanging DMs and going on a few dates, they officially became a couple.

As for the proposal, Sydel explained she had one requirement. “My one wish for a proposal was to have all my family in the same room when the time came. He planned it on a weekend that both of our families would be in town for different reasons.”

The pair got married on Sept. 1, 2018, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Steph’s wife Ayesha served as her matron of honor while his daughters were flower girls.

The day after the wedding Sydel shared photos on her Instagram along with a special message for her husband: “I love this man more than words can tell but now i get to live my life showing it and telling him every day! As a wedding gift, Steph gave his sister something pretty special. He had the women’s volleyball locker room at Elon University named after her.

“Just want to say congratulations on getting married this weekend, that’s a big occasion, I know it’s crazy,” Steph said in a video message. “But we also want to congratulate you on an amazing career at Elon playing volleyball, all you did for the school and the program, and wanted to give it back to you with the new locker room for Sydel Curry.”

On Nov. 26, 2021, Sydel and Lee welcomed a baby boy, Daxon Wardell-Xavier Lee.

“No words are enough to describe the bliss of having my sweet son here. We are in newborn bliss and soaking in every single moment,” she wrote on Instagram.

STANFORD, Calif. – Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry supported Stanford women’s basketball once again on Friday night–this time with a special guest at his side.

Curry sat courtside in a red beanie with his daughter Riley for the matchup against the USC Trojans at Maples Pavilion, Janie McCauley from the Associated Press tweeted.

Curry has shown ongoing support for women’s basketball, including his god-sister Cameron Brink, who is a star on Stanford’s team. She is the daughter of Sonya Curry’s best friend and roommate at Virginia Tech, and has known Steph Curry since she was little.

Brink broke a record Friday night and became the Stanford’s career leader with 275 blocked shots, McCauley said, leading to a 50-47 victory.

Curry also showed up last month to the Cal versus Stanford game with his mom.

After the game, Curry spoke to the Golden Bears about how the team is getting better, despite Cal’s loss that night.

“We’re getting better — you have to believe you’re getting better,” Curry told the team after the game. “Eventually you’ll get into a game and you’ll look at each other … and then it’s going to click.

Riley Curry stole the hearts of Warriors’ fans during the 2015 NBA playoffs when she sat on her dad’s lap during press briefings at just 2 years old, grabbing the microphone and waving at the press.

The Golden State Warriors took a huge gamble during this past off-season in trading for Chris Paul. It was a massive move that pretty much shored up the point guard position for the Dubs. With Stephen Curry at the forefront, the Warriors now know that if anything happens, they have a respectable backup option in CP3.

That being said, Warriors fans were given a bit of a scare recently. Last night, Golden State took on the Sacramento Kings in a pre-season game. While they won the game 115-121 in Over Time, neither Curry nor Paul featured in the game. This led to many of the Warriors’ faithful believing that their two starting-caliber point guards were injured.

Fortunately for them, this is far from the truth. Both Steph and CP3 are completely healthy without even a hint of an injury. In a likelihood, the Warriors decided to give the two future Hall of Famers a rest. After all, it is only pre-season, and there is a long way to go if the Dubs have any hope of making it back to the NBA Finals.

One thing is for certain, the Warriors have assembled quite the team ahead of the 2023-2024 season. They have a fair amount of depth in their roster, something that allows for adequate coverage at every position. However, whether or not they find success, only time will tell.

Stephen Curry and CP3 are unlikely to start the regular season with the rest of the Dub’s roster

Stephen Curry and Chris Paul are definitely not injured. However, according to some reports, it is likely they will continue to be rested for quite a while. Given they still have 82 games to go, the Warriors may not be willing to take a chance and as such will have both guards sit on the bench once the season kicks off.

They will join Draymond Green, who suffered an ankle injury earlier this month, just weeks away from the start of the 2023-24 NBA season. Nevertheless, it looks like the Warriors will survive. After all, they managed to secure victory over their Division rivals the Sacramento Kings, despite not having three of their star players. Luckily, the likes of Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga stepped up in the 115-121 victory scoring 20 and 28 points respectively.

Nevertheless, fans will be hoping to see all three stars back in action sooner rather than later. This is especially true in the case of Steph, who is the key to any form of success the Warriors hope to have. As a result, keeping him fit and healthy should be the organization’s No.1 priority.

They do not want a repeat of last year, where Curry suffered partial tears to his superior tibiofibular ligaments and interosseous membrane, as well as a contusion to his left lower leg. If Steph is out, the Dubs’ chances of winning their fifth championship of the 21st century reduce significantly.
