LeBron James was listed as questionable for Sunday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to an ankle issue. Unfortunately, he was eventually ruled out for the game. What’s interesting, however, is that his designated injury is not the reason for his absence.

James is apparently dealing with flu-like symptoms, forcing the Lakers to let him sit out their showdown with the Timberwolves, per ClutchPoints reporter Michael Corvo.

 

It’s no longer new for LeBron to be on the Lakers’ injury report. It has been the norm throughout the season, as the Purple and Gold often list him as either questionable or probable prior to games as they manage his health. The superstar forward is already 39 years old, so it’s unavoidable for him to experience several body ailments in the rigorous 82-game campaign.

Despite often being on the injury report, however, James rarely sit out. Heading to Sunday’s game, James has played in 68 games so far, missing just 10 games and with only one instance of a back-to-back absence. LeBron has been relatively healthy, so it’s definitely surprising to many that he ended up being sidelines.

But then again, with illness being the reason for his absence rather than an injury, it’s understandable why the Lakers made the decision to rule him out.

Sure enough, there’s no denying that LeBron James’ absence is quite the blow to the Lakers. After all, there’s no easy way to replace the all-around production he brings on a nightly basis. James is averaging 25.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 8.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

D’Angelo Russell has been playing well and should be able to help alleviate the scoring load that’s now on Anthony Davis’ shoulder with James out, but the rest of the team definitely needs to step up considering that they are up against a feisty Timberwolves team.

Anthony Edwards remains a huge offensive threat, and he’s sure to make life hard for the Lakers. The Purple and Gold are also expected to have a hard time dealing with the top-defense in the NBA anchored by Defensive Player of the Year frontrunner Rudy Gobert. Without James, that task has also become even more difficult.

The good news for the Lakers is that they have performed relatively well in games without James. They are 6-4 in such games, even registering wins against two of the East’s best teams in the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks (twice).

In the Lakers’ first meeting with the Timberwolves this season, they were also without James. But Davis and Co. put up quite the fight before losing 118-111. AD exploded for 31 points in the contest, though it just wasn’t enough against the trio of Edwards, Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns.

With KAT currently out for the Timberwolves and the Lakers brimming with confidence after winning nine of their last 10 games, Darvin Ham’s men could find a chance to take a W even without LeBron.

Lakers injury woes

Aside from LeBron James, the Lakers also have other key absences. Jalen Hood-Schifino, Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent and Christian Wood have all been ruled out due to various injuries.

Prior to the Wolves game, LA owns a 45-33 record, good for eighth in the West. They are only half a game ahead of the Sacramento Kings, though, so they really need to get a win to ensure they stay in contention for the Top 6 seeds or at least a better Play-In spot.

Jokic and the Nuggets clogged the passing lanes around Anthony Davis during the play. Austin Reaves missed a three-pointer late in the shot clock and Denver got the rebound.

James was perplexed when referees called him for a foul during a Murray drive with 57.1 seconds left. The Nuggets guard nailed both free throws to tie the score 97-97.

Afterward, some fans questioned why Lakers coach Darvin Ham didn’t use one of his challenges to contest the call and prompt a review. It’s unlikely he would have won the challenge.

The two-minute report stated James extended his forearm and initiated contact with Murray’s front, which affected his drive to the basket. “The illegal contact occurs prior to Murray’s gather and a non-shooting foul is correctly assessed,” the report read.

The NBA only publishes reports evaluating calls in the final two minutes of games and didn’t address other calls the Lakers protested.

Denver’s Michael Porter Jr. was called for a shooting foul on D’Angelo Russell late in the third quarter, only for the call to be overturned after a challenge by Nuggets coach Michael Malone. Crew chief Scott Foster announced over the public address system that Porter’s contact was “marginal.”

The Lakers disagreed.

“That’s a foul,” Russell tweeted after the game, “we all saw it on national television.”

James vented his frustration about the replay center that reviews contested calls.

“I don’t understand what’s going on in the replay center, to be honest. … D-Lo clearly gets hit in the face on a drive. What the f— do we have a replay center for if it’s going to go [like that]. It doesn’t make sense to me,” James said after the loss. “It makes no sense to me. It bothers me. … And then I just saw what happened with the Sixers-Knicks game too. Like, what are we doing? … It’s … stupid.”

Ham told reporters after the game: “It’s tough, some tough calls, some tough non-calls. … It’s getting real tricky. Go through the season, games being officiated one way and then getting the playoffs, and then it’s like, I guess it’s left up to the interpretation of the three individual guys that’s doing the job out there.

“But all that said, you just have to know that yeah, it stings.”

Now, the Lakers are in a 0-2 hole, and staring down a must-win Game 3 at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night. Here are three keys to a bounce-back victory for the Lakers.

Be In The Trap

Los Angeles led most of the way in Game 2, mainly because of their defensive game-plan. Before collapsing late in the third quarter, the Lakers trapped and pressured Nikola Jokic and Murray in various points in the game.

The caveat here is having the discipline and focus to keep the rotations tight. The Lakers’ defense must also contain the Nuggets’ backdoor screens. Running the zone almost to perfection worked in the first half. In Game 3, it needs to work for the entire 48 minutes in order for the Lakers to win.

Rebounding

Lakers head coach Darvin Ham emphasized rebounding as an area of improvement ahead of Game 2. In the first half, it seemed as if the Lakers did just that. The Lakers outrebounded the Nuggets, 22-21, in the first half. In the second half, however, the Nuggets outrebounded the Lakers 24-16.

Denver also converted 10 second-chance points as a byproduct. Those second-chance opportunities and extra possessions helped Denver climb back into Game 2 and escape with the win. The Lakers can’t afford to stop crashing the glass and creating second-chance opportunities in Game 3. They can’t give the Nuggets points in transition as a result of shot turnovers.

More Anthony Davis

Davis was an afterthought in the fourth quarter of Game 2. In his 10 minutes, he only had one shot attempt and didn’t score.

Down the stretch, the Lakers must keep Davis involved. A two-man game between LeBron James and Davis with sprinkles of iso action should put the Lakers in a better position to win.

Davis must also impose his force. Demand and get the ball when there’s a mismatch. The clutch offense for the Lakers is simple: play through AD more. Exploit the various mismatches.

If the Lakers play through Davis down the stretch, limit turnovers and senseless isos, they will end the night down 2-1 with an opportunity to take care of their homecourt in Game 4.

A pair of critical Los Angeles Lakers frontcourt role players will sit out LA’s must-win Game 3 matchup against the Denver Nuggets, as the team’s first round playoff series rolls on tomorrow at Crypto.com Arena.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that both power forward/center Christian Wood and power forward Jarred Vanderbilt will miss the bout. Charania notes that Wood had been intending to come back for his first game action since undergoing a left knee arthroscopic surgery in March.

LA will again have to rely on backup center Jaxson Hayes, who’s given them nothing in this series.
