Why the 40,000-Point Club, Led by LeBron James, Will Likely Remain Untouched for an Extended Period, If Not Permanentl

Never say never. There´s a slim chance that one day someone will join LeBron James in the NBA´s 40,000-point club.

James crossed the 40,000-point mark on Saturday night, extending the NBA all-time scoring record that he claimed from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar last season.

James already has added about 1,700 points of distance between himself and Abdul-Jabbar’s total of 38,387. It might be time to add James’ NBA scoring record to the list of “records that never will be broken,” like Cal Ripken´s 2,632 consecutive games played in baseball, Wayne Gretzky´s 2,857 points in the NHL or the UConn women´s basketball team winning 111 consecutive games.

Wilt Chamberlain once averaged 50.4 points in a season in the NBA. Nobody else ever has come close to that. The highest any other player averaged in a full season was Elgin Baylor´s 38.3 per game; if someone averaged that much for an entire career, they would have had to play all 82 games for almost 13 seasons just to get to get to 40,000 points.

“Nobody will ever, ever touch it,” Miami forward Kevin Love, one of James’ former Cleveland teammates, said last year when James broke Abdul-Jabbar´s record.

And remember, James might play another season. Or two. Or more. He easily could reach 43,000 or 44,000 by the time he´s finished. That will only make the record more out of reach.

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James looks toward fans after scoring during the second half of an NBA basketball game against the Denver Nuggets Saturday, March 2, 2024, in Los Angeles.

Some reasons why it’s such a long shot that someone else will reach the milestone:

Other than James, there are only seven active players with more than 20,000 points – meaning there are only seven players who are halfway to 40,000.

Kevin Durant is closest to James, about 12,000 points behind the all-time scoring leader. Durant´s career average of 27.3 points per game is actually 0.2 points better than James´ career scoring rate. But Durant – if he keeps that average – would have to play basically every game until the end of the 2028-29 season to reach the 40,000 mark.

He´d be 40 at that time. Durant playing at that age isn´t completely unrealistic. The playing every game for five-plus years part probably is unrealistic; Durant hasn´t appeared in all 82 games of a season since 2009-10, when he was 21.

There are three active players with higher career per-game scoring averages than James. Durant is one, Luka Doncic (28.5) and Joel Embiid (27.8) are the others.

Doncic just turned 25. A reporter asked him last week if he considered turning 25 to be a milestone birthday. “I feel like I´m 40,” Doncic replied. It sure doesn´t seem like Doncic is considering playing 15 more years, based on that answer.

And Embiid is roughly 28,000 points behind James. He´d need to play 1,000 more games, give or take, to reach 40,000. Given his health history and age – Embiid turns 30 later this month – 1,000 more games seems improbable at best.

James got to 40,000 through the combination of excellence and longevity. Only Vince Carter played more NBA seasons than James has, and if James – as expected – comes back for Year 22 next season he´ll tie that record.

Playing seemingly forever, that is what turns a tough task into darn near impossible.

There have been greater scorers, at least in terms of average. Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain both averaged 30.1 points, but James already has appeared in 400-plus more games than either of those icons. Elgin Baylor averaged 27.4 points in his 14 seasons; he appeared in 846 games and would have had to play in 616 more (at that scoring average) to reach 40,000.

Jerry West averaged roughly the same in his career as James. Again, the longevity is what separates them; West played 932 games.

All talk about things that could happen in the future should include Victor Wembanyama.

He is averaging 20.7 points per game as a rookie. James averaged 20.9 points in his rookie season. Only 20 more years and the same trajectory to go, and Wemby will be right there in the 40,000 club.

At All-Star weekend, Milwaukee guard Damian Lillard said that if he was in charge he´d add a 4-point line to the NBA floor. That would certainly help someone make a run at 40,000.

It´s unlikely that such a move will happen; in fact, given how scoring has risen in recent years, it´s reasonable to think that the NBA will make moves to help out defenses before it gives shooters another way to put up video-game numbers.

“Records are always meant to be broken. You can never say never, of any record. … For years, people said Kareem’s record would never be broken.” – James, after scoring 40,000.

D’Angelo Russell’s 26-Point Outburst and LeBron James’ Leadership Propel Lakers to Statement Win over Western Conference-Leading Thunder.

D´Angelo Russell hit five 3-pointers while scoring 26 points, and Anthony Davis added 24 points and 12 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-104 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

LeBron James had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in the Lakers’ 10th victory in 14 games. Austin Reaves added 16 points while hitting four 3s for the Lakers, who won their third straight meeting with the Western Conference-leading Thunder to take the season series.

In his first game since scoring his record 40,000th career point in a loss to Denver, James nearly got a triple-double before the Lakers´ big lead allowed him to sit out the final six minutes. Davis was able to sit out the entire fourth quarter when the Lakers hit six 3-pointers in quick succession during his absence, boosting their lead to 25 points.

Russell punctuated the Lakers’ decisive rally by hitting 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions with increasing theatrics. He got a standing ovation from the Lakers’ crowd when the third 3-pointer with 9:06 to play left him sprawled on his back from uncalled defensive contact, putting the Lakers up 103-79.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 20 points – ending his streak of eight consecutive 30-point games – for the Thunder, who lost for only the second time in nine games. Lu Dort and Chet Holmgren added 15 points apiece.

Oklahoma City hit a season-low 30.6% of its shots in the first half while playing on possibly weary legs during the third stop of a four-game road trip that included a tough win at Phoenix on Sunday.

Carmelo Anthony shares story of how LeBron James once saved him from drowning

On the basketball court, LeBron James is a hero to his fans because he led the LA Lakers to win after win. But off the court, another basketball great, Carmelo Anthony, sees James as a hero for an entirely different reason. Anthony says James saved his life.

With the coronavirus pandemic suspending the NBA season and forcing people to stay indoors, Anthony and Dwyane Wade found some extra time on their hands. So the two took to Instagram Live to talk about everything from their mutual love for wine to their favorite memories of the late Kobe Bryant.

But around 30 minutes into the conversation, actress Gabrielle Union, Wade’s wife, chimed in and asked Anthony to tell the story of when they were in the Bahamas and “it didn’t look like you were going to make it.”

“That s— got me sweating thinking about that,” Anthony said before diving into the story.

Anthony said the group of friends jumped off a boat and swam to a “little grotto” in the water. While everyone swam back up to the boat, Anthony said he stayed back to “see the last bit of the barracudas snorkeling and all that.”

“Then I look up and the current is taking me in the middle of the ocean opposite from the boat,” Anthony said, while admitting that “it was my fault.”

Wade said the rest of the group couldn’t see him and Anthony added that it was windy.

“All types of s— was going on through my head,” Anthony said. “Then I look up at the boat, and I see ‘Bron jumps off the boat like he’s MacGyver. He jumps off the boat into the water. He was bringing me back with one arm. He’s swimming with the other arm.”

“I’ve seen LeBron do a lot of amazing things on the court,” Wade said. “Off the court, when he went and saved Melo’s life.”

“That was special. … He saved my life.” Anthony echoed. “Yo ‘Bron, I appreciate that. You saved my life that day. Them little flippers wasn’t working for me.”

So on top of his three NBA championships, we can now add “saved Carmelo Anthony’s life” on James’ long list of accomplishments.

LeBron James and Drake join PGA Tour’s $3bn fight against LIV Golf as merger talks continue

LeBron James and Drake join PGA Tour’s $3bn fight against LIV Golf as merger talks continue

LeBron James and Drake have signed up to invest in the PGA Tour amid the league’s civil war against LIV Golf.

The basketball legend and famous rapper are part of a £2.3billion group that invested in the PGA Tour. This big deal, praised by Tiger Woods and other top players, will let players own part of the tour and earn more money, to stop them from being tempted by LIV Golf.

LeBron James’ business manager Maverick Carter and agent Rich Paul are also investors. Hollywood star Chris Pratt is another investor, says the New York Times. They’re putting their money into the tour along with a group of super-rich people, including Arthur Blank, who owns the Atlanta Falcons, and Steve Cohen, who’s in charge of the New York Mets.

“Golf can be so much more than a sport,” said Drake. “I remember some of my best childhood memories was being on the golf course with my uncle. It’s one thing to invest in a team, but to help reimagine one of the biggest leagues in the world is an incredible opportunity and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

James, Drake and their pals are seen as strategic investors in the group, which is known as the Strategic Sports Group. They’ve been chatting with the tour at the same time as the tour’s separate talks with LIV backers the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF). They agreed to merge last summer, but a final deal with the PGA Tour and PIF hasn’t happened yet.

However, it’s clear that the Greg Norman-led breakaway league, which started in 2022, isn’t going anywhere despite the merger talks. LIV managed to get several top stars from the PGA Tour when it started, including Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, and it has kept on investing big in players.

In December, two-time major champion Jon Rahm signed a deal worth about £450million. The PGA Tour knows about the threat of LIV and it hopes the SSG deal and the equity opportunities for its players stop more players leaving for the Saudi-funded league. Right now, the PGA Tour is doing better than LIV when it comes to audience and viewing figures, with its events doing much better than LIV broadcasts.

Golf bosses are in a panic as more big names move to the rebel LIV Golf series. So superstar LeBron James has been lined up to be the PGA Tour’s saviour after they allowed LIV to steal most of their top talent.

James and rapper Drake could even invest in the PGA and use their huge social media pull to tempt fans back. The pair are said to own stakes in Italian Serie A leaders AC Milan and are major stars in the USA where golf chiefs want to win back fans.

PGA chiefs met with James last month with golf legend Paul Azinger branding it “a sad day” for the money-spinning PGA Tour in the wake of the player exodus to LIV. Azinger moaned to Golfweek: “The best players aren’t all playing PGA Tour tournaments. That’s over. Suddenly, the LIV Tour, let’s just say it like this: the PGA Tour has fast become the qualifier for LIV and it’s a sad day for golf.”

The snub led to a now-deleted social-media post from LeBron, raging against the decision. James’ reaction to his son being left off of ESPN’s prediction comes a year after the Lakers’ legend said Bronny was ‘definitely better than some of these cats I’ve been watching’.

Instead of being a major player at USC, Bronny has averaged only five points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Yet, the extraordinary potential James showed at powerhouse Sierra Canyon High School cannot be ignored.

Bronny’s potential NBA future has been discussed in large part due to his father, LeBron

‘I don’t value a young player getting into the lottery as much as I do getting him on the right team in the right developmental situation,’ LeBron’s agent Rich Paul told ESPN.

‘LeBron wants Bronny to be his own man,’ Paul added.

LeBron has long expressed a desire to play in the NBA with his son, as a window only exists for a few years for that to happen, as the elder James turns 40 in December.

Paul added LeBron would be ‘head over heels excited’ if Bronny and he could be on the same roster. Right now, that would mean the James duo staying in Los Angeles.

LeBron suiting up for a fourth NBA franchise is on the table to facilitate his dream.

Due to Bronny’s heart condition as a result of July’s cardiac arrest, the 19-year-old James would have to be cleared by the NBA Fitness to Play Panel. That clearance would be expected, as he’s played for USC throughout the season.

The unknown of opting to enter the 2025 NBA Draft could weigh on Bronny’s decision as well. Although it gives him another opportunity to prove himself at USC, the draft class has been considered deeper with talent than the 2024 edition.

Milestone Achievement: Evaluating the Importance of LeBron James Scoring 40,000 Points and Its Meaning for the NBA.

LeBron James is nine points away from becoming the first NBA player to reach 40,000. It´s obviously reasonable to think that he´ll get it when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. James has scored at least nine points in each of his last 762 games that count, including playoffs.

He´s been held under nine points a total of nine times in 21 seasons. In other words, 40,000 is about to happen. And since 50,000 points probably won´t happen – though one never knows with the 39-year-old James – this will be another moment that is certainly worth savoring.

“No one has done it,” James said. “And for me to be in this position at this point and time in my career, I think it´s pretty cool. But is it one of the top things I´ve done in my career? No. Does it mean something? Of course. Why wouldn´t it?”

He never set out in pursuit of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar´s scoring record; it just happened. He never set out in pursuit of Vince Carter´s record of playing 22 seasons either; he´ll tie that mark next year, barring some sort of seismic change in his plans or thinking. It´s still about one thing, and that´s the ring.

The Lakers aren´t the favorites to win the title this season. But given how the oldest player in the NBA right now has performed this week, Laker Nation still has plenty of reasons to think that one more run to a Larry O´Brien Trophy is possible.

What he did on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers was pure theater. He outscored the Clippers 19-16 by himself in the fourth quarter, making five 3-pointers and leading the Lakers to a wild 116-112 comeback win. And then on Thursday night – a back-to-back for a 39-year-old with a bad ankle – he played 39 minutes, scored 31 points and had a huge chasedown block that became a game-saving play to help the Lakers get an overtime win against Washington.

“That´s why he takes good care of himself,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “The fruits of his labor are on full display with plays like that.”

The Wizards are bad, sure. But a win is a win, and the Lakers keep stacking them. They´re 9-3 in their last 12 games, are five games over .500 and now get a shot at Denver in a rematch of last season´s Western Conference finals mismatch.

That´s James´ focus entering Saturday. Not getting 40,000 points.

“We just want to get better,” James said.

It´s cliché, but true. That said, he´s just doing a whole ton of unprecedented stuff.

He´s going to average about 25 points this season. There hasn´t been an “oldest player” in the NBA to average even 10 points since John Stockton scored 10.8 per game in 2002-03. James is probably going to finish with the highest scoring average of any oldest player ever; Abdul-Jabbar was the league´s oldest player when he averaged 23.4 points in 1985-86.

Here´s another oldie-but-goodie: James was an All-Star last month. Nobody had been an All-Star in a season where they were the league´s oldest player since 1991, when Robert Parish pulled it off.

“It´s just been an absolute honor to be able to grace the floor throughout my career and be out there with the greatest players in the world year in and year out,” James said in Indianapolis, when he was an All-Star for the 20th time in his 21 seasons.

The NBA couldn´t have timed this any better: Lakers vs. Nuggets, national TV, prime-time Saturday night, James nearing a milestone that nobody has ever hit and nobody will again anytime soon – if ever. The funny thing is, he´s already reached 40,000 points, depending on how one counts.

    Let´s explain.

Officially, James has 39,991 points in regular-season games going into Saturday. Unofficially, it could be argued that the real total is 40,015 points (which would have meant that he crossed the 40,000 mark on Thursday). Or maybe even 40,067 points (which would have meant the milestone basket happened Sunday in Phoenix).

He had 24 points on Dec. 9 in the final of the In-Season Tournament, when the Lakers beat Indiana 123-109 for that event´s inaugural crown. But that game wasn´t a regular-season game, doesn´t count in the standings and doesn´t count in the stats either.

And he´s also scored 52 points in Play-In Tournament games, getting 22 in a win over Golden State in 2021 and 30 against Minnesota in a win last season. Those aren´t playoff games, nor are they regular-season games. They just don´t count, period.

So, he´s already done it. He´ll just do it for real on Saturday. Before long, it´ll be back to the playoff grind, already in progress, but the moment is one he will appreciate.

“To hit feats and have milestones throughout my career, they all mean something to me. Absolutely,” James said. “Obviously, there´s a pecking order of which ones are higher than others. But I would be lying to you if I said no, it doesn´t mean anything. It absolutely does.”

It won’t be the last big moment of his career. But nobody knows how many great ones are left for James. And that’s why this will be one to savor.
