D’Angelo Russell scores 44 points in LeBron-less Lakers’ stunning 123-122 win over Bucks

LOS ANGELES (AP) — D’Angelo Russell scored 21 of his season-high 44 points in the fourth quarter and hit a go-ahead jumper with 5.9 seconds to play, and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame LeBron James‘ injury absence for a 123-122 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night.

Spencer Dinwiddie blocked Damian Lillard‘s step-back jumper right before the buzzer to preserve a stirring win for the Lakers while James sat out to rest his sore left ankle, missing his ninth game of the season overall due to the persistent injury.

They were carried by Russell, who tied his career high with nine 3-pointers while also handing out nine assists in a spectacular performance. He scored eight points in the final 1:13 while the Lakers rallied from a late deficit.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists. Lillard scored eight of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, but the Bucks couldn’t hang on in their second consecutive loss.

Milwaukee took its first lead since early in the second quarter on Antetokounmpo’s jumper with 2:53 to play. Lillard converted a four-point play two possessions later, but Russell trimmed the Bucks’ lead to one point on a three-point play with 39 seconds left.

Lillard missed a tough layup to give the Lakers a chance, and Russell hit a leaning 13-footer with 5.9 seconds to play. Dinwiddie, who was making his first start for his hometown Lakers, then smothered Lillard’s final shot.

Antetokounmpo had his 43rd career triple-double, his eighth of the season and his first since Jan. 24. Pat Connaughton scored a season-high 17 points and hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch.

Anthony Davis had 22 points — just two in the fourth quarter and 13 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won 11 of 15 as they fight to gain any ground in the competitive Western Conference.

James hobbled off the court with four minutes left in the Lakers’ loss to Sacramento on Wednesday night with the latest flare-up of an ankle injury that has bothered the leading scorer in NBA history throughout his 21st season. Coach Darvin Ham said the Lakers don’t consider the injury to be season-threatening, even though James also missed two games around the All-Star break.

Russell again raised his offensive output when forced to play without James or Davis, shooting confidently while also distributing the ball effectively on offense. He hit four 3-pointers while staking the Lakers to a halftime lead, and they stayed in front throughout the second half until Antetokounmpo and Lillard took over.

Austin Reaves added 18 points for the Lakers.

Before the game, Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers said Khris Middleton is “close” to returning from the sprained left ankle that has sidelined him for 13 games since Feb. 6. Rivers didn’t dismiss the possibility of Middleton playing against the Clippers on Sunday.

“He could be,” Rivers said. “I don’t know. He’s going to go hard (in practice Saturday). I’m (feeling) he’ll be back sooner than later, whatever that means to you.”

Lebron James dealing with ankle injury that randomly flares up and doesn’t have immediate fix

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Lebron James reportedly is dealing with an ankle injury that doesn’t have an immediate fix since it is very much an issue related to his advanced age for an NBA player.

Despite turning 39 in December, 20-time All-Star Lebron James is still competing at an elite level. Even with a fellow All-Star on the roster in Anthony Davis, the NBA great leads the Lakers in points, assists, steals, and is just .7 away from playing the most minutes per game.

However, in recent years the four-time MVP has been far more susceptible to injuries and has suited up in 60 or more games just once in the last six seasons. He even famously battled through a serious foot injury last spring to lead the surprise Lakers to the Western Conference finals. Nevertheless, James’ age is starting to catch up and recently it has come in the form of an ongoing ankle issue.

After LA’s 130-120 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, James had his left ankle examined by medical staff. The testing had members of the media curious and the NBA legend tried to brush off the issue. “I’ll be all right. It’s just my ankle,” he said. “It’s just what I’ve been dealing with before the [All-Star] break, after the break. I’m just managing it the best way I can.”

Well, some extra information was revealed about his ankle on Thursday and it seems like the problem will be around for at least the rest of the season. According to a source who spoke with ESPN, the ankle pain is being caused by “wear and tear” for the 39-year-old who is in his 21st season.

“Some games are better than others,” James said. “I didn’t feel it at all against OKC. And I didn’t feel it at all until the fourth quarter tonight. So, each game, each day is different.”

This latest issue is just the latest example of how even legends get old and the NBA window for Lebron James is getting closer to being shut.

In 2018, LeBron James began the third chapter of his career by moving from Cleveland to Los Angeles.

James has accomplished a lot in the six years since, from earning six more All-Star selections to winning the fourth championship of his career. He has also reached several milestones in the purple and gold, including becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

Despite his success, James has “privately questioned” whether the fan base would fully embrace him, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks and Dave McMenamin. The ESPN report explained James had doubts due to years of on-court battles with Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

James recently scored his 40,000th career point, a feat only no other player has accomplished. Lakers fans poured in their love and support for their superstar, which wasn’t lost on James.

“Much respect and much loyalty to the Laker fan base for showing me that love,” James said. “Being the first player to do something, that’s pretty cool in this league.”

LeBron James vs. Kobe Bryant history

James and Bryant have established themselves as two of the top NBA players in history, no matter how one ranks them.

The two crossed over between 2003 and 2016, but never played together or even in the same conference. Bryant was on the Lakers for 20 years, and James didn’t transition to the Western Conference until Bryant retired.

James and Bryant matched up 22 times in their careers, with James winning 16 of those contests. Most of the stats across their 22 matchups go in favor of James, too.

While the two had notable head-to-head matchups, they never met in the NBA Finals. Many anticipated that Finals matchup would come true during the 2009 NBA Playoffs when the Lakers made the Finals for the second straight season, but James’ Cavaliers fell to the Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Bryant was back in the Finals in 2010, but the Cavaliers lost to the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

James signed with the Heat following the 2009-10 season, but Bryant couldn’t get past the Western Conference Semifinals in the four seasons James made the Finals in Miami.

Here’s how the two currently stack up in terms of accomplishments and accolades:

Will LeBron James get a Lakers statue?

James will almost certainly get a statue in Cleveland and possibly will receive one in Miami as well. He spent nine seasons with the Cavaliers, bringing them their first NBA title, and won two championships with the Heat in four seasons.

While James will likely be remembered most as a Cavalier or Heat, he could end up playing his longest stint with the Lakers.

James is in his sixth season with the Lakers and has a player option in his contract for 2024-25. If he re-signs beyond that, James will enter his eighth season in Los Angeles, surpassing the seven consecutive seasons he spent with the Cavaliers before signing with the Heat in 2010.

Naturally, given his standing in the NBA and what he has accomplished with the Lakers, some have begun wondering if James will also receive a Lakers statue.

First Take’s Shannon Sharpe recently asked Gilbert Arenas about his perspective on the matter on the “Nightcap” podcast, and the former NBA All-Star said “hell no” if his career ended now.

“He don’t have enough accolades in the Laker uniform,” Arenas said. “The closest statue we have with that was Shaq. Shaq [was] eight years, three rings. So, it’s going to be hard to put him in there with six years, 8,000 points, one championship, six All-Stars [appearances]. That’s not good enough for a statue in Los Angeles.”

Arenas added that James would need to win another title to earn a Lakers statue.

For the reсord, Mіchael Jordаn іs the NBA’ѕ аll-time leаder іn рoints рer gаme аt 30.1, though he’ѕ teсhniсally tіed wіth Wіlt Chаmberlаin. • Paul Pierce shows immense respect to LeBron for playing through injury

Paul Pierce shows immense respect to LeBron for playing through injury

Paul Pierce shows immense respect to LeBron for playing through injury

    Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce showed some major love to Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James for playing through injuries in his NBA career.

“It’s no science to like if you rest you gon’ be less likely to get injured,” Pierce said. “And so I just say this, if you love the game, ain’t nobody telling me I can’t play tonight. That’s just – that’s just me. And I see that with just only certain people in the league, you know? And I never seen Bron – Bron don’t sit down.”

Pierce then told a story about James rolling his ankle and then returning to a game to catch a lob.

“I done seen Bron come into the Garden,” said Pierce. “I’m talkin’ ’bout he rolled this ankle like this. And I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah, he fosho done for the night.’ Two minutes later he come back out there and catches a lob. And I’m like, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’”

James has dealt with wear and tear on his ankle this season, but he’s still found a way to appear in 56 games for the Lakers. By playing in the team’s loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night, James tied his second-highest game total with the Lakers in his career. His highest came in the 2019-20 season when appeared in 67 games for the team.

Pierce clearly believes that James loves to be out on the floor, and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer has shown that time and time again in his career. James is in his 21st season in the NBA, and he’s played in 75 or more games in 12 of those seasons.

Plus, the four-time champion had a stretch in his career where he made eight straight NBA Finals appearances, adding more wear and tear to his body. Yet, he has still found a way to suit up night in and night out – even at 39 years old.

Despite dealing with the lingering ankle injury that caused him to leave the Lakers’ game against the Sacramento Kings in the final minutes on Wednesday, James finished the game with 31 points, five rebounds and 13 assists.

Pierce and James were rivals during Pierce’s career – especially when the Hall of Famer was with the Boston Celtics. However, there is certainly a respect from Pierce for how James plays the game and the effort he gives on a nightly basis.

The Lakers are hoping that the 20-time All-Star can stay healthy enough to appear in most, if not all, of the team’s games down the stretch of the 2023-24 season. The Lakers are fighting for playoff positioning, as they currently hold the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.

Heat legend says Chris Bosh, not LeBron James, was most important player on Miami’s title-winning teams

Heat legend says Chris Bosh, not LeBron James, was most important player on Miami’s title-winning teams

Udonis Haslem explained his surprising choice this week on a podcast

    USATSI

Udonis Haslem may have stopped playing in the NBA, but the former Heat big man and franchise legend is still in and around the game, both as a member of Miami’s front office and as a podcaster. During a recent episode of his show, “The OGs Podcast with Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller,” he made an interesting comment about some big-name former Heat teammates.

According to Haslem, Chris Bosh was the most important player on the Heat during the run of four straight Finals appearances, not LeBron James. Here’s Miller and Haslem:

Mike Miller: “I’m telling you, if [Chris Bosh] stayed healthy, he’d still be playing.”

Udonis Haslem: “Everybody thinks that our most important player was [LeBron James]. Our most important player, not our best player, our most important player was [Bosh]. He was our most important player. If [James] went down, you could bring in [Dwyane Wade]. It’s not the same player, but you’re gonna get similar results of what you’re gonna get out of the player — making plays, he can go for 30.

“We couldn’t simulate — we didn’t have another [Bosh]. If that motherf—– went down and he got hurt, we didn’t have another one of those.”

Mike Miller: “And the way [Erik Spoelstra] started using him too was impossible to guard, like he was shooting 3s. That man was cold, brother. And that’s when no one did that.”

Bosh was an incredible player and his offensive rebound and kickout to Ray Allen in Game 6 of the 2013 Finals is one of the most clutch moments in NBA history. He was a crucial part of those title teams and a deserved Hall of Famer. He was not, however, the most important player on the Heat during those four seasons.

If you want to say he was the X-factor or his impact was overlooked, that’s one thing. But just because the Heat didn’t have anyone to replicate his role or production doesn’t make him more important than the best player in the world at the peak of his powers. In fact, Bosh did get hurt during the 2012 playoffs — he suffered an abdominal strain in Game 1 of the second round and didn’t return until Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals — and the Heat won the title anyway

During that 2012 postseason run, James averaged 30.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game on 50% shooting. When they went back-to-back in 2013, he was at 25.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game on 49.1% shooting.

There’s no replacing that, as the Heat found out during the 2014-15 season when James left and they missed the playoffs.
