The family of five stepped out for the show where LeBron was honored with the Best Record-Breaking Performance honor, at the Dolby Theatre on Wednesday (July 12) in Hollywood.

LeBron clarified during his victory speech that he is not retiring from the NBA in response to the rumors.

LeBron spoke candidly about his choice while on stage, stating, “I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep playing when the season ended.” Speaking for myself, here I am. I asked myself at the time, “Is there any way I can still play without cheating?”

Can I still give the game everything I have? He continued, “The truth is, I’ve been thinking about this subject at the conclusion of the season for a few years now; I’ve just never discussed it in public.

“Can I play without cheating the game?” is the actual question LeBron added. I’ll stop playing the game the day I can’t give it everything I have.Fortunately for you all, that day is not today.

“I have one more thing left.” Plenty remaining! I adore you all and am so grateful that you have followed us on this trip so far.

The USC Trojans didn’t have the best season after being ranked in the top 25 to start the season. However, the Trojans have a chance to turn their season around if they can turn things on and win the Pac-12 tournament.

 

The Pac-12 tournament begins on Wednesday, and the Trojans will kick things off in Las Vegas. A win is pivotal if they want to keep their tournament hopes alive. USC will look to play well while they look good.

James will send the boys out in style with a pair of his sneakers customized in cardinal red, gold, and white.

USC is a Nike school, and James is the company’s most significant member, so it only makes sense for him to give the program an incredible gift. The four-time NBA champion and MVP has some of the best basketball kicks in his collection.

The number nine seed Trojans will take on the number eight seed Washington Huskies on Wednesday at noon PT. The winner of that game will play the number one seed, Arizona Wildcats. The road to the NCAA tournament starts on Wednesday; we’ll see if the Trojans can do the impossible.

Lakers News: Roland Martin Identifies the Sole Reasonable Comparison for LeBron James’ Longevity.

LeBron James continues to solidify his legacy as he plays at a high level into his 21st NBA season. Though James is already considered one of the greatest of all time in the sport, he only adds to that legacy by his unique longevity. James already ranks second in NBA history in minutes played, only behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

According to Roland Martin, James’ longevity is almost unmatched across the sports world, especially when it comes to how well he’s played over two decades in the league. For Martin, the best comparison he believes there is to James is Tom Brady.

 

“Probably the only comparable person to do what LeBron is doing at this stage of his career is Tom Brady in football when you talk about the longevity and STILL playing at a high level.”
Martin added that what will make his longevity more special is if his level of play doesn’t drop off as his career winds down to retirement.
“The last year of Tom Brady was not a good one and so I think that’s what the challenge is. And so, obviously [decline] wants to win an NBA championship, but I think he wants to show everyone that you’re not going to see a tremendous decline in the output and quality of play that he has. He is such a great player and he can STILL play at that level in Year 21 when a bunch of cats in Year 1, 2 or 3 would love to play at that level.”

With James averaging 25.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game this season while shooting 53% from the field, it’s clear he is far from done or a shell of his prime.

Like Brady, James’ play has lasted longer than many thought possible. While a player’s late 30s and early 40s were seen as the age when these athletes are expected to fall off, both Brady and James are showing that athletes can still be effective at a later age. Of course, it helps to be as good as Brady and James in the first place, but both prove that it’s possible to age well as an athlete.

LeBron James and Anthony Davis Dominate the Timberwolves with Record-Breaking Performance, Scoring 29 Points Each.

Anthony Davis had 27 points, a season-high 25 rebounds and a career-high seven steals while leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 120-109 victory over the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night.

Davis added five assists and three blocked shots in one of the most prolific games of his decorated career. The nine-time All-Star feasted on a Minnesota lineup missing its top two big men and four regulars due to injuries, grabbing 21 rebounds in the second half alone and leading a 21-4 rally to begin the fourth quarter while the Lakers pulled away to their 12th win in 17 games.

“When we’re out there having fun, everybody’s confidence is high,” Davis said. “When we’re talking trash to the other team, we’re holding each other accountable, and we’re just playing the right way. We know what it takes. It’s just about having the consistency of playing that way each and every night.”

 

Davis is only the eighth player since the 1982-83 season with at least 25 points, 25 rebounds and five assists in a game, according to Sportradar. Nikola Jokic did it last season, joining a short list that includes Charles Barkley and Kevin Garnett.

“Ten offensive rebounds is crazy,” said Austin Reaves, who scored 19 points for Los Angeles. “I did feel any time we shot and missed, he was there to give us a second-chance opportunity with offensive rebounds, get himself to the line. The steals, I don´t know. The steals are crazy. Seven steals is very, very impressive.”

LeBron James had 29 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as the Lakers knocked off another top team following wins over Oklahoma City and Milwaukee on their six-game homestand. Los Angeles (36-30) is six games above .500 for the first time since the final day of the 2021-22 regular season.

Naz Reid scored 25 points and hit five 3-pointers in his first start of the season for Minnesota, which hit 16 of its season-high 46 3-point attempts. Reid delivered his second straight outstanding performance after scoring a career-high 34 against Cleveland last Friday, but the Wolves’ depleted interior defense couldn’t stop Davis without Rudy Gobert or Karl-Anthony Towns.

 

“This team is No. 2 in the West, and still a good team,” Davis said. “Obviously, they´re missing key parts of their team, but they still have guys who can make plays, and they still find a way to win ballgames. We just wanted to come out as a team effort and knowing that wherever we are in the standings and how important this game was, trying to close the gap in the standings.”

Anthony Edwards also scored 25 points for the Wolves, who have lost four of six. Minnesota missed nine consecutive shots to start the fourth quarter while Los Angeles pulled away.

“Ball movement dried up a little bit, but really it was the offensive rebounds at the other end of the floor that hurt us more in the fourth,” Minnesota coach Chris Finch said. “I felt confident we were able to come back, but so many second shots, and it’s difficult at that point. … (Davis) should have dominated us. He had size. He had length. He had all that stuff. He was in the paint for seven, eight seconds every time they shot the ball. It’s easy to go get it. But we’ve got to do a better job rooting him out.”

James returned after sitting out due to injury for the ninth time this season when the Lakers stunned Milwaukee 123-122 on Friday night behind D’Angelo Russell’s 44-point performance. Davis injured his left shoulder during that game in a collision with Giannis Antetokounmpo, but it didn’t visibly slow him.

Edwards played through an ankle injury, but Gobert sat out with right hamstring tightness. Gobert, who missed his third game of the season, was fined $100,000 by the NBA earlier Sunday for a series of transgressions questioning the integrity of the NBA’s officiating Friday.

Towns missed his third straight game for Minnesota since being diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his left knee. The big man is likely to be sidelined until the postseason following surgery.

 

Kyle Anderson also sat out with right shoulder pain, and Monte Morris missed his second straight game with a strained left hamstring.

Lakers swingman Cam Reddish was ruled out with a sprained right ankle. It was the second additional game he has missed since he returned from a monthlong injury absence in late February.

Ending on a High Note: LeBron James Retires with Dignity, Unlike Michael Jordan.

On Saturday, LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 points. This is an incredible, almost mind-bending accomplishment. To put it in some perspective: If Stephen Curry, one of the best scorers in NBA history, wants to reach 40,000 points, he will have to average 25 points a game, his current career mark, while playing a minimum of 70 games a year for the next 16 seasons, or until he is 51 years old.

Here’s another thing that happened in that game on Saturday, something a lot less amazing and a lot more familiar: LeBron lost.

He has won four NBA championships with three different teams, including one with the Lakers to conclude the bizarro COVID-bubble 2020 season. But I’m not sure LeBron has ever been further away from a title than he is right now. Despite the presence of peak-of-his-powers fellow future Hall of Famer Anthony Davis, his Lakers are currently tenth in the Western Conference. The team seems ticketed for the play-in game (a concept LeBron once despised) and consistently falters against the top-tier teams in the conference — particularly the defending champion, Denver Nuggets, which beat the Lakers for the eighth consecutive time the night LeBron scored his 40,000th point. In no realistic universe are the Lakers anything resembling a championship contender. They are an average, even mediocre team. That LeBron is still their best player, that he is doing things no one his age has ever done in NBA history, is remarkable and unprecedented and still sort of beside the point: It’s not enough. The Lakers just aren’t that good.

Considered in the context of NBA history, this could be seen as a tragic, even pathetic end to a career. We’ve seen plenty of that before. Michael Jordan’s last two years, in Washington, were so feeble and embarrassing that we as a society seem to have collectively decided they didn’t happen. Kobe Bryant scored 60 points in his final game, but the three seasons that preceded it were difficult to watch; the Lakers missed the playoffs all three seasons and lost a stunning 65 games during Kobe’s final year, still the worst year in franchise history. Shaquille O’Neal ended his career playing six total minutes in the playoffs for the Celtics. (In case you forgot, he was briefly “the Big Shamrock.”) Time, as they say, is undefeated. But all told, we don’t usually talk about how these stars’ careers ended. We’d rather remember the good years.

What has been the most noteworthy about LeBron’s final few years in the NBA is how decidedly un-tragic this all seems. Part of this is because LeBron is so much better than any other superstar has been at the end of their career. But it’s more than that. One of the most refreshing aspects of LeBron’s career, as I’ve written before, is how he’s the first post-Jordan superstar who has felt comfortable, really from the beginning, not defining himself in comparison to MJ. (Other than his number, anyway.) This is the trap Kobe fell into for the first few years of his career, which occasionally even felt like Jordan cosplay. Jordan’s megalomaniacal intensity, his obsession with not just winning but dominating and humiliating anyone who dared to challenge him, was oppressive and stifling and even monotonous, and it led to a whole generation of NBA discourse that mostly boiled down to Quién es más macho? It also, as we saw from The Last Dance, led to Jordan living a pretty miserable existence and having, inevitably (time being undefeated and all), a crash landing at the end of his career, his body no longer being able to keep up with what Jordan’s relentless soul demanded of it.

That’s not the way LeBron has handled things. He has won, a lot, but he has also lost, and while he’ll send the occasional passive-aggressive emoji tweet around the trade deadline, he generally handles defeat like someone who understands that it’s something that happens no matter how hard you try, even to a winner with nothing left to prove. His career is not building its way toward another championship at its climax — though presuming he resigns with the Lakers this offseason as expected, his team will have some draft picks it could trade for another superstar to make one last run — and while he doesn’t seem resigned to this, he does seem comfortable if that’s how it turns out. He has long said he’s much more interested in playing a final season with his son Bronny James than anything else, even implying he’d sign with whichever team drafts him. And while that possibility has been complicated by Bronny’s health issues and an unspectacular freshman year at USC, it’s telling that it’s viewed as a far more logical end point for LeBron’s career than a fifth NBA title would be. Jordan ended his career bitter, angry, and alone. LeBron looks as though he’s going to end it side by side with his son.

It’s just another example of the way LeBron has mapped out his career — and life — in a far more human, relatable, and downright sane way than Jordan ever did. It is as if he realized, early on, that he’d be forever compared to the man, understood (unlike Kobe, at least until the end) it was a battle that could not be won, and released himself from that burden by doing things his own way. LeBron is winding up his career as one of the best players in the league, but that’s not the most impressive thing about his swan song. What’s impressive is that he’s going out on his own terms, mostly independent of the historical debates we keep trying to drag him into. Somewhat ironically, this will probably only buoy his legacy after he’s gone, especially since future superstars can follow his example and do things their own way. Jordan or LeBron? We’ll forever argue who’s better. But I don’t think there’s any sort of debate about who you’d rather be.

Los Angeles Lakers News: Why Bronny James-LeBron James Pairing May Have To Wait

USC Trojans freshman Bronny James, a former four-star prospect out of Sierra Canyon School in the San Fernando Valley, has been dealing with perhaps unfair expectations ever since he picked up a basketball. The 6’4″ combo guard has yet to truly blossom with the Cardinal and Gold. The team, too, despite boasting a highly-regarded recruiting class, hasn’t performed up to expectations. It finished its regular season with a 14-17 overall record (8-12 in the Pac-12 Conference).

 

Bronny’s dad, All-Star Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, has made no secret of the fact that he wants to one day play alongside his son on an NBA court. They’ve even appeared on a Sports Illustrated cover together, along with Bronny’s little brother Bryce, in an article where LeBron reiterated his desire to play with both his kids. But, as John Hollinger of The Athletic notes, it appears that Bronny James will need additional NCAA seasoning, and is currently considered too raw a prospect for the league at large.

To note that Bronny’s offense hasn’t really blossomed would be a bit of an understatement. Through 23 games this season (six starts), Bronny is averaging a meager 4.8 points on a .371/.278/.621 slash line, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.7 steals in 19.3 minutes per. Not exactly All-Pac-12 numbers.

Still, there have been marginal signs of improvement as the year has progressed, in fits and starts. The younger James has shown plenty of athletic promise on defense. His offensive bag, too, has started to look a bit better. That includes, yes, some long-range sniping. He had a particularly impressive trey during a surprise 78-65 win over the No. 5-seeded Arizona Wildcats on Saturday:

Bronny ultimately scored a whopping five total points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field. But he played a grand total of 19 minutes on the floor, primarily thanks to his efforts on the other side of the hardwood, as Hollinger notes. Bronny pulled down six boards, all defensive, and swiped two steals. He’s impressing his head coach, if not most draftniks, who generally don’t think he’s a real prospect for the 60-person class of 2024.

“This is the best Bronny has played in a while,” Trojans head coach Andy Enfield said. “He hit that big 3 at the end of the first half to give us some momentum. He was terrific in all aspects, he really defended, and all of those rebounds were at or above rim level, out of his area.”

Bronny may have underwhelmed during his debut collegiate season. But that’s okay. Fans and media alike need to appreciate that it’s unfair to expect him to ever become his dad on the hardwood, although he could still enjoy a long and successful pro career.
