Patrick Mahomes should have been a No. 1 draft pick.

That’s obvious now, after Mahomes has become the new face of the NFL and led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dynasty.

But before Mahomes was a three-time Super Bowl winner throwing touchdowns to Travis Kelce and occasionally hanging out with Taylor Swift, the son of a baseball pitcher was just a big-armed college quarterback from Texas Tech.

There was a talented QB from North Carolina who had more NFL upside, according to many draft experts.

And the Chicago Bears.

On Thursday in Detroit, the regularly rebuilding Bears are expected to make Caleb Williams the No. 1 pick of the 2024 draft.

Back in 2017, Mitch Trubisky was a rising name on draft boards, while Mahomes was viewed as a risky pick who had inflated numbers playing in the wide open Big 12.

Chicago increasingly became infatuated with Trubisky, who didn’t become a full-time starter at North Carolina until his junior year.

The Bears liked the relatively unproven Tar Heels QB so much that they traded with the San Francisco 49ers to move up in a draft that featured top prospects such as Myles Garrett, Christian McCaffrey, Marlon Humphrey, Jamal Adams, Marshon Lattimore and Deshaun Watson.

With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft, Chicago took Trubisky.

And Mahomes — who eventually was taken by the Chiefs at No. 10 — didn’t forget.

Mahomes doesn’t forget

In 2019, Mahomes already had an NFL MVP and Super Bowl trophy on his shelf.

When his Chiefs played the Bears in Week 16 on national TV, Kansas City easily won 26-3.

Mahomes threw for 251 yards, two touchdowns and a 112.1 rating, while Trubisky struggled, only throwing for 157 yards and posting a 65.4 rating.

The No. 10 pick in 2017 also reminded the team that took Trubisky at No. 2 about the franchise-changing draft miss.

As Mahomes bounced to the sideline, he counted on his hands for the TV cameras to see.

“I was the 10th player picked, right? The Bears had a chance,” said a TV announcer, as he imagined Mahomes’ inner thoughts.

“They told him they were going to draft him,” the star QB’s dad, Pat Sr. told Chicago’s 670 The Score in 2023. “We thought he was going to be the third pick overall and go to Chicago.

“He had a great meeting when he went there and liked all the guys that were doing the stuff there and thought he was going to be a Bear. Then once they traded up and got Mitch, it kind of hurt him. It really did. He always knew that Kansas City had told him that they were going to come up and get him. They just didn’t know how far they’d have to go. But initially, he thought he was going to be a Chicago Bear.”

Host Danny Parkins, listening to the words, had his head in his hands and, when it had sunk in that a man who will be remembered as one of the best ever, simply said: “I’m going to be sick to my stomach.”

THE GOAT

Mahomes went on to win two more Super Bowls, while Trubisky bounced from Chicago to Buffalo, Pittsburgh and back to Buffalo as a backup.

Mahomes has six Pro Bowl selections, three Super Bowl MVPs, an Offensive Player of the Year award and is 74-22 as a starter.

He recently graced the cover of Time magazine and is one of the most popular athletes in the world.

Trubisky made the Pro Bowl in 2018 but lost his starting job in Chicago two years later and is now mostly forgotten by NFL fans.

He’s 31-26 as a starter and has thrown 72 touchdowns along with 48 interceptions.

Mahomes obviously should have been the No. 1 pick in a historic 2017 draft.

Or at least gone No. 2 to the Bears.

Patrick, 28, was seated a few tables away from James, 39, and his circle but kept interacting throughout the night.

“Patrick was in a great mood and him and Brittany were having a great time with their friends,” the source shares, adding that the couple hit the dance floor as the evening’s surprise entertainer, Pitbull, performed on stage.

Notably absent from the event was Patrick’s bestie, Travis Kelce, who had attended the Kentucky Derby earlier in the day before making his way to Miami for the Formula 1 race on Sunday.

There was, however, no shortage of billionaires at night three of the exclusive fête that famously charges $3,000 a head.

On the other side of the luxurious bash on the beach, Elon Musk dined with Citadel CEO Ken Griffin. Meanwhile, another table included real estate exec Stephen Ross, investor Jorge Pérez and Miami Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel.

It’s been a few months since three-time Super Bowl champ Patrick Mahomes notched his latest title — and in his free time he decided to pay a quick visit to Logan Paul and let him borrow some very valuable pieces of jewelry.

 

During a recent surprise appearance at this week’s WWE Raw, Kansas City Chiefs 2024 Super Bowl MVP Mahomes, 28, sent the crowd into a frenzy when he let Paul, 29, use his Super Bowl rings as brass knuckles in his match with Jey Uso.

Mahomes was sitting front row when Paul approached him about using his Super Bowl rings as a weapon against Uso, however his punch missed Uso at the last second and instead he struck JD McDonagh, according to CBS Sports.

Mahomes has been enjoying the offseason after securing his third Super Bowl ring in February. Just before his appearance on WWE Raw, the dad of two hosted his annual 15 and Mahomies Foundation Golf Classic gala in Las Vegas on April 27, attended by his friends Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift.

And earlier this month, the Kansas City Chiefs recently celebrated Mahomes’ seventh anniversary with the team courtesy of a video highlighting all of his accomplishments thus far.

The video kicked off showing Mahomes in his Texas Tech football jersey in college before cutting to him in a Chiefs jersey, as audio from his first NFL draft played. “With the 10th pick in the 2017 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Patrick Mahomes,” the voiceover on the video said.

Meanwhile, Paul’s brother Jake Paul is gearing up to fight heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson in a live special to air on streaming giant Netflix.

Netflix announced the event last month, saying the match will take place Saturday, July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Paul, 27, said in a statement that he “could not be more excited” about the match with 57-year-old Tyson, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers in history.

Retired Major League relief pitcher Patrick Mahomes Sr. has been formally indicted on a felony drunk-driving charge after being arrested in Texas last month as his son and namesake was preparing to return to the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The elder Mahomes was officially indicted in Smith County Texas on March 28, according to online court records, which list the charge as ‘Driving White Intoxicated 3rd or More IAT. Mahomes Sr. faces a potential 10-year sentence and up to a $10,000 fine. He was arrested by Tyler police on February 3, marking at least the third time he was picked up on a drunk-driving related charge.

Mahomes Sr. was previously sentenced to 40 days in jail in 2019 after one of his DUI offenses.

The younger Mahomes declined to discuss the arrest with reporters in Las Vegas in the days leading up to his second consecutive Super Bowl victory.

‘It’s a family matter, so I’ll keep it to the family,’ Mahomes told reporters on Super Bowl opening night. ‘That’s all I have to say.’

Spokespeople for the Smith County District Attorney’s office declined to speak with DailyMail.com because the case is pending.

An attorney representing Mahomes did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.

Mahomes Sr. was found with an open can of beer in his car after being pulled over, according to police. He was then taken into custody after allegedly struggling several sobriety tests.

‘Based on the totality of the circumstances, I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place,’ the arresting officer wrote.

Mahomes Sr. was stopped because he was driving slower than the other cars around him in a vehicle with an expired registration, police claim.

A divorced father of four, Mahomes Sr. posted a 5.34 ERA over 11 MLB seasons, during which time he was primarily used as a reliever.

Mahomes Jr. inherited his father’s passion for baseball. Not only was he a high school star in Texas, but the reigning Super Bowl MVP is also a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals.

Furthermore, Mahomes Sr.’s former Minnesota Twins teammate, retired reliever LaTroy Hawkins, is Mahomes Jr.’s godfather.

Mahomes pointed out some of the milestones in women’s sports over recent years. He praised the women’s NCAA tournament final between Iowa and South Carolina becoming ESPN’s most-viewed basketball game, Coco Gauff’s first match in the US Open getting more views than the men’s final, and the rising interest in the WNBA and NWSL.

Mahomes and his wife Brittany, whom he attended the gala with, are part-owners of the NWSL team Kansas City Current, alongside Angie and Chris Long. Their efforts memorably led to the Current having the first stadium built specifically for a women’s team.

Meanwhile, the WNBA is expected to have a monumental season viewership-wise upon Caitlin Clark’s entry following a historic college career with Iowa.

Taylor Swift wrapped off her four-night Eras Tour stint in Paris on Sunday with a show that appeared tailor-made for Travis Kelce. According to videos released on social media, Kelce attended the event with Gigi Hadid and Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper. Throughout the night, Kelce, a Kansas City Chiefs tight end, was seen in concertgoers’ videos dancing, singing along, and, at one point, creating Swift’s iconic heart symbol with his hands.

Swift wore a two-piece yellow and orange suit for the “1989” segment of her show, which was most likely a reference to the Kansas City Chiefs’ colors. She has worn several color combinations of this ensemble on prior occasions in Paris.

Swift reportedly modified the lyrics of “Karma” to make a reference to Kelce, singing, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.” The three-time Super Bowl champion and Swift have been romantically linked since September, when she went to her first football game to watch Kelce play. Since then, the couple has been seen at each other’s sporting events and concerts.

Swift’s next stop is Stockholm, where she will perform three gigs beginning May 17.

‘The timing is right,’ a source told Life & Style on Friday. ‘They’ve been together almost a year now and they’re madly in love, so it makes sense that they’d be discussing marriage.’

The insider also hinted that Kelce may be planning a ‘grand gesture’ when he gets down on one knee.
