  • Is Rihanna’s Diverse Lingerie Brand Savage X Fenty Ethical?

Is Rihanna’s Diverse Lingerie Brand Savage X Fenty Ethical?

Grammy winner and billionaire entrepreneur Rihanna helped make inclusive sizing and diverse fashion shows sexy with her lingerie and loungewear brand Savage X Fenty.

“I wanted to include every woman. I wanted every woman on the stage with different energies, different races, body types, different stages in their womanhood, culture,” Rihanna told Elle of her 2018 runway show.

Entertainers and models like Slick Woods (who rocked a baby bump), Taraji P. Henson, Gottmik, and Cindy Crawford have graced the “Umbrella” singer’s stage.

Modern designs, unparalleled diversity, an annual avant-garde fashion show that practically shames Victoria’s Secret — this is all great! Unfortunately, a revealing accountability report underlined the company’s appalling ethical practices. Even the most gorgeous of lace teddies can’t distract from that.

Rihanna wears sunglasses and stands into the camera, while posing with furry bras hanging on a clothing rack

Though 501(c)3 nonprofit Remake’s Fashion Accountability Report was released in November 2022 (interestingly, Bad Gal RiRi stepped down as Savage X Fenty’s CEO in 2023), YouTuber Giulia-Christina Philipp — better known as Ready to Glare — brought us back to the report’s findings in a November 2023 video titled “Savage X Fenty is WORSE than SheIn???” With an all too familiar sigh, let’s discuss the evils of fast fashion.

Pop culture commentator Ready to Glare cites Remake’s February 2023 article “Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty Scores Worse Than Shein in Ethical Practices,” throughout her video, surprised to see Rihanna’s name associated with an ethics scandal.

The article’s author, Charlotte Kincaid, who considers herself “a sustainable fashion obsessive and raging Rihanna superfan,” was, too, caught off guard by the findings.

Beneath its empowering surface, Savage X Fenty is another irresponsible fast fashion brand. The report, which “measures companies’ actions towards social and environmental justice goals,” gave Savage X Fenty an abysmal score of 4 out of 150 possible points (the higher the score, the better). In 2022, 58 companies were scored with an average scorecard of 14 points.

According to the article, the company demonstrated “an utter lack of transparency and accountability” in all categories, including Traceability, Wages and Wellbeing, Commercial Practices, Raw Materials, Environmental Justice, and Governance.

“The company blatantly disregards industry standards when it comes to social and environmental disclosures, merely noting on its website that products are ‘imported,’” the report reads.

Sadly, it also “lacks even a Supplier Code of Conduct to define guidelines for assessing factories’ compliance with international labor standards, especially in regard to workers health and safety.”

In terms of environmental sustainability, a few items are made with pre-consumer REPREVE recycled fibers. Ultimately, the line “relies heavily on the use of oil-based synthetic materials.” Several products use virgin elastane, polyester, and nylon fabrics, none of which are considered sustainable.

These synthetic materials utilize a non-renewable resource, are energy-intensive to produce, and shed harmful microplastics, polluting our oceans, air, drinking water, and food. Naturally, these microplastics also invade our bodies and the bodies of innocent animals.

If that doesn’t alarm you, sustainable fashion brand Water From Mars released a 2020 article titled “Polyester, Elastane and Acrylic Are Killing Your Immune Cells, Possibly Right Now!”

Additionally, five California governments filed a lawsuit against Savage X Fenty (aka Lavender Lingerie LLC), alleging that it “did not clearly disclose automatic charges resulting from VIP memberships,” as per County of Santa Clara news release. It was also alleged that the brand automatically charged customers without proper consent or notice and “falsely advertised the ability to use store credit.”

Savage X Fenty settled the consumer protection lawsuit, paying $1.2 million in November 2022.

Michael Jordan reaches agreement to sell majority stake in Charlotte Hornets

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) — Michael Jordan has officially reached an agreement to sell his stake in the Charlotte Hornets, ending his 13-year run as the majority owner.

Hornets Sports & Entertainment confirmed Friday that Jordan reached an agreement to sell his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall.

Plotkin, who acquired a minority stake in the team in 2019, has been an alternate governor on the NBA Board of Governors since 2019 and is the founder and chief investment officer of Tallwoods Capital LLC.

    (Charlotte Hornets)+

Schnall is co-president of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice LLC, where he has worked for 27 years, and has been a significant minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks and an alternate governor on the NBA Board of Governors since 2015, the Hornets said.
How much do NBA All-Star players get paid?
Schnall is in the process of selling his investment in the Hawks, which is expected to be completed in the next several weeks, officials with the Hornets explained.

The Buyer Group will also include Chris Shumway, Dan Sundheim, Ian Loring, Dyal HomeCourt Partners, North Carolina natives recording artist J. Cole and country music singer-songwriter Eric Church, and several local Charlotte investors, including Amy Levine Dawson and Damian Mills.

When the news of Jordan’s initial talks to sell his stake in the Charlotte Hornets broke earlier this year, it was noted that Jordan would maintain a minority stake in the team.

The transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors.

  • Plans for Michael Jordan museum in Wilmington scrapped

Plans for Michael Jordan museum in Wilmington scrapped

Plans for a Michael Jordan museum in downtown Wilmington announced last year appear to have rimmed out.

According to a Friday news release from New Hanover County government, “The (Jordan) family has decided not to pursue a Michael Jordan Family Museum at this time.”

In December, New Hanover County Manager Chris Coudriet announced that the block of downtown Wilmington slated for a new library and museum could also include an area for a Michael Jordan museum as part of Project Grace. As part of that project, the current downtown library and Cape Fear Museum will be combined in a new building, with the old library torn down and replaced by new development.

A memorandum of understanding was dated Dec. 4 and signed by Coudriet and Jordan’s mother, Deloris P. Jordan. The museum as envisioned would have included “important artifacts and objects to tell the family’s story.”

A planning phase was set to address design and operational details of a potential museum, but it’s not clear if that ever got off the ground. Funding was to be included as part of the overall Project Grace planning budget.

A potential Michael Jordan museum on the site of Project Grace appears to be on hold.

According to the release from the county, “The conversations during this due diligence and discovery phase have been collaborative and productive … While this museum is not moving forward, the county looks forward to its continued partnership with the Jordan family to display memorabilia from Michael Jordan’s life and career in the Cape Fear Museum and appreciates their continued support of our community.”

MJ and ILM:What does Michael Jordan mean to his hometown? It’s complicated.

Jordan, a Wilmington native, is considered by many the greatest basketball player ever. He’s a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and one of the world’s most famous people. Until last year, he was also the majority owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.

Jordan starred in basketball for Laney High School before going on to win a national championship in 1982 with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

According to the release, “No county funds have been expended on this project to date,” and the announcement doesn’t “change the existing development agreement with Cape Fear Development,” which will build a mix of retail and residential where the current downtown library exists once it’s torn down sometime in the next year.

As for Jordan and Wilmington, well, it’s complicated. Most residents know Wilmington is Jordan’s hometown, but the fact isn’t exactly trumpeted locally.

Jordan is in neither the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame nor the Wilmington Walk of Fame.

Jordan has talked openly for years — like in ESPN’s 10-part documentary “The Last Dance” — about the racism he experienced in Wilmington growing up during the 1970s.

Still, even as he hasn’t always embraced his hometown, Jordan has come back to Wilmington time and again, starting with the Azalea Festival in 1982. When he returned in 2018 after Hurricane Florence, he handed out Thanksgiving meals at Lowe’s Home Improvement stores and donated $2 million to hurricane recovery efforts.

He’s given his time, his money and plenty of Nike Air Jordans to Laney, and in 2021 Jordan donated $10 million to help fund two area medical clinics in a partnership with Novant Health.

Laney’s Michael Jordan Gymnasium was named for him in 1995. The new gym built in 2017 isn’t named, but it’s part of the high school’s Michael Jordan Sports Complex. Near Laney, a sign on Interstate 40 has proclaimed a seven-mile stretch in New Hanover and Pender counties the Michael Jordan Freeway since 1991.

Downtown, the Cape Fear Museum of History and Science has long had a small, permanent exhibit, “Michael Jordan: Achieving Success” dedicated to Jordan’s days in Wilmington. Presumably most of that material, along with perhaps some new items, will move to the Cape Fear Museum’s new location when Project Grace is finished.

How ex-NBA star Michael Jordan makes and spends his US$3 billion net worth – from new Nascar ventures to his steady Nike Air Jordan income stream and his tequila brand, Cincoro

Jordan is on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans thanks to his sale of the Charlotte Hornets – and Sotheby’s auctioned sneakers worn by the athlete for a record US$8 million
After the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, the athlete and Nike pledged to donate US$100 million over 10 years for racial equality
At 61 years old, Michael Jordan has broken record after record on the court, and now he’s also the only former professional athlete to accumulate a large enough wealth to make the Forbes 400.

With his iconic No 23, Jordan retired (for a third and final time) from basketball in 2003 – but his impact in the world of sport, fashion and business continues to inspire. In February, Sotheby’s sold a collection of trainers that Jordan had worn for a record breaking US$8 million, making them the most expensive game-worn trainers ever auctioned.

From his savvy moves in sports management to lucrative deals with Nike that continue to bring in yearly pay cheques, here’s how the NBA legend spends and makes his money.

    The Charlotte Hornets

Last year, Jordan’s net worth soared to an estimated US$3 billion, with the athlete joining the Forbes 400: a list of the 400 wealthiest Americans on the planet. His sharp rise in wealth came after he sold his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets in August 2023. The sale was nearly 17 times the value compared to when he became principal owner back in 2010.

But his transition from NBA star to sports owner wasn’t unexpected. In 1998, Jordan retired from basketball for the second time, and he first got the idea of entering the sport from a management perspective, reported ESPN. He joined a group that had bought stakes in NHL’s Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, and took on the role of president of basketball operations.

After a brief return to the court and spreading his business interests, he bought a minority stake in the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006 (they became the Charlotte Hornets in 2014). In 2010, he became majority owner of the team, purchasing it for US$175 million.

Nike founder Phil Knight has famously been quoted as saying that Jordan was the best decision he ever made. Back in 1984, he signed a deal with the then-NBA rookie for US$250,000 a year. The deal almost never happened, as Jordan was contemplating partnerships with other brands before joining Nike.

Forbes reported that when the Air Jordan was first released in 1985, sales were expected to sit at around US$3 million. Just two months later, sales were at a booming US$70 million. At first, Jordan signed on for five years, earning US$500,000 annually plus royalties.

The basketball star has been credited for “revolutionising the sneaker industry”, with a Business Insider report in 2023 claiming that the Jordan brand brings in US$3.6 billion in revenue for Nike each year.

Details of the athlete’s deal with Nike and his royalties from the Jordan brand, which uses the iconic Jumpman logo, emerged late last year. Per Fox News, his 5 per cent royalties earned saw him get US$330 million in 2023 alone. Coupled with his US$94 million haul from his 15 NBA seasons, his fame on court seems to grow proportionately with his influence in the apparel world.

    Nascar Cup Series

While Jordan still maintains a small stake in the Hornets, it’s widely speculated that he may spend more time at Nascar this year. In 2020, he co-founded Cup Series team 23Xl Racing with Joe Gibbs racing driver Denny Hamlin. Per NBC Sports, since finalising the Hornets deal, Jordan has been spending more time on the track.

Hamlin also told the publication that Jordan had not only become more involved in marketing, but also in team meetings, explaining, “He’s obviously been a part of team sports forever. He’s, at times, heard things in meetings where he’s like, ‘I don’t like that. We need to be more self-reflective on what we need to do better.’ That goes such a long way with our team.”

As he turns his attention to Nascar, Jordan is expected to keep an eye on his other business interests, including his lucrative tequila brand Cincoro as well as sports and gaming companies DraftKings, Sportradar and Mythical Games.

    Philanthropy

Michael Jordan has made large donations in 2020 alone, during the height of the pandemic and in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. Photo: AP

In 2020, Jordan donated US$2 million to Feeding America’s food banks in Chicago and North and South Carolina. The money was from his earnings for the docuseries The Last Dance. Per NBC, he made the donation at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, saying it was important to “pause and give thanks”.

Also in 2020, the basketball player and Nike, under the Jordan Brand, pledged to donate US$100 million over 10 years to various organisations to fight for racial equality, social justice and access to education. The move came after the death of George Floyd, which sparked countless Black Lives Matter protests across the nation.

  • Traits that help you win at anything, according Michael Jordan’s trainer

Traits that help you win at anything, according Michael Jordan’s trainer

Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls looks on against the Sacramento Kings during a game played on February 28, 1998 at the United Center in Chicago.

After earning his degrees in exercise science and kinesiology from the University of Illinois-Chicago, personal trainer Tim Grover scored then Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan as his first pro client in 1989.

Grover says he wrote a letter to every Bulls player at the time, but Jordan was the only one to respond.

“He gave me 30 days. Thirty days turned into 15 years,” Grover wrote on Instagram in 2015.

Jordan went on to win six NBA championships while working with Grover. In 2007, after Jordan’s second retirement from the NBA, Grover worked with Kobe Bryant and later Dwayne Wade.

In his new book, “Winning: The Unforgiving Race to Greatness,” Grover reveals what he’s learned about what success looks like. As Jordan writes in “Winning,” Grover “knows more than anyone about building winners.”

Here’s some of what Grover has learned about winning, no matter what the challenge.

    ‘There are no steps’

Using inspiring quotes or trying someone else’s step-by-step program for success is an amateur move, according to Grover.

That’s because different motivation and processes work for different individuals. You need to figure out what works for you.

“There are no steps. I can’t say, ‘Here are the five steps to get into the zone,’ or the ’10 steps to success,’” Grover tells CNBC Make It.

“Those steps are infinite and they’re constantly changing.”

Jordan, for example, didn’t have the same training routine as Bryant, and their individual routines evolved as their game did and as they did.

“I needed to prove myself over and over again because the routine I used for MJ is not the routine that I’m going to use for you,” he says, because everyone has different needs.

Grover’s advice: Experiment to find what works best for you, then constantly switch up your routine as you grow.

    Winners see themselves as ‘different’

“Winning makes you different and that difference is going to scare people,” Grover says.

“People are not going to understand your work ethic. They’re not going to understand why you do the things you do at the intensity that you do it and why you continue to want more and more and more,” he says.

Grover says people who are true gamechangers don’t think outside the box because they don’t even see a box. “They see possibilities. They use their own decisions, successes, and failures as a springboard to elevate their thinking and results,” Grover writes.

“Everyone wanted to be like Mike. Mike did not want to be like anyone else,” Grover writes.

Grover’s advice: “Winning requires you to learn, question what you learned, and then learn more. You have to be willing to challenge what you’ve been taught, and learn it again with a different perspective,” Grover writes.

‘Fear and doubt aren’t the same thing’ and the difference is crucial

“Fear and doubt aren’t the same, and the difference is as distinct as winning and losing,” according to Grover.

“Before every game, you’d see MJ alone, head down, chewing his gum, having a private conversation with himself. He felt the same nerves you might feel before you’re about to face a challenge. But he never doubted that he would perform at his best,” Grover writes in “Winning.”

That’s because when winners get fearful, they quiet their minds by thinking about all the preparation and work they’ve done to get where they are. They don’t allow their fear to escalate into uncontrollable doubt, Grover says. They trust themselves to handle the situation or challenge ahead.

“Fear shows up on its own. Doubt has to be invited. Fear heightens your awareness; it makes you alert. Doubt is the opposite; it slows you down and paralyzes your thinking,” Grover writes.

“Fear is about the threat, whatever you have to face. Doubt is about you.”

Grover’s advice: “For both MJ and Kobe, it all came down to a relentless belief in whatever they did,” Grover writes. “Every decision, every move, was rooted in confidence.”

With winning, your heart has less of a voice

Jordan said it all in his ESPN documentary “The Last Dance”:

“My mentality was to go out and win at any cost. If you don’t want to live that regimented mentality, then you don’t need to be alongside of me…. And if you don’t get on the same level, then it’s going to be hell for you.”

To win, Grover says you need to put your thoughts and desires ahead of your emotions and ahead of everyone else’s emotions. People may call you “obsessed” or “crazy” or “difficult,” he says. “But you are not the problem, you are the solution.”

“The higher the pressure, the longer you fight to stay at the top, and the more you focus on this one thing, the less you allow your heart to have a voice in your decisions and actions. You don’t have the luxury of being any other way,” Grover writes.

Grover’s advice: You have to accept others just might not get it and forge ahead regardless.
