LeBron James says reaching 40K was ‘bittersweet’ due to loss against Nuggets

Needing just nine points to open up and join the 40,000 points club on Saturday, LeBron James got it done in the second quarter versus the Denver Nuggets.

 

The Los Angeles Lakers legend scored 40k the way he’s scored countless times, getting the switch he wanted and driving to the basket with force. On this particular play, he got Michael Porter Jr. to defend him one-on-one and once he started going downhill, MPJ couldn’t do much about it. LeBron spun to the basket and finished with a nice layup, hitting 40,000 career points exactly.

The L.A. crowd showered him with thunderous applause as the team got back on defense and the Lakers shared a video tribute to the King’s accomplishment during the following break in action.

The Lakers unfortunately didn’t get the win, losing for the eighth time in a row against the Nuggets. So many losses in a similar fashion have fans wondering why Los Angeles can’t beat Denver. The defeat put a damper on the milestone night for LeBron and the Lakers.

“I’m never thinking about a milestone when I’m out there battling, but when it happens, obviously, we acknowledge it,” James said after the game. “Much respect and much loyalty to the Laker fan base for showing me that love during the timeout; being the first player to do something’s pretty cool in this league cause you just know the history, you know the greats that’s come through the league. And then you see some of the greats on the floor tonight. It was just great to compete vs. that.”

“But for me, the main thing is always the main thing and that’s to win. I hated that it had to happen in a defeat, especially versus a team that, you know, played extremely well. We played some good basketball tonight, but wasn’t able to close it out. So, bittersweet, you know, but I enjoyed every moment tonight though on the floor.”

This isn’t the first time the Lakers vs. Nuggets played this season while a big moment surrounded their matchup. The first game between L.A. and Denver was on Denver’s ring night and the next matchup was on Kobe Bryant’s statue unveiling. Now, we have the 40k game. All eventful games and all Denver wins.

Luckily for the Lakers, they won’t play the Nuggets again for the rest of the season, barring a playoff matchup.

Despite the sour feeling of a celebratory moment being ruined with a defeat, James will hopefully embrace his greatness and the NBA world will acknowledge just how special what we are witnessing is.

40,000 points is hard to wrap one’s head around. The only active player even close to it right now is Kevin Durant and he’s at 28,372 points, which is 11,645 points behind Bron. Keep in mind that James is also playing and adding to this number.

LeBron has a player option for next season and may be looking to opt out and sign a longer-term deal. The end is nearing, but his numbers show no signs of him slowing down.

Even in this ‘bittersweet’ game, Bron ended the night with 26 points, a team-high and he did it on 60% shooting from the field. It’s just unprecedented work for a 39-year-old.

When looking at Bron’s career, one can use many statistics and phrases to describe his ridiculousness. I’ll leave you with this: he’s accomplishing things no one predicted he could have done and has spent the majority of his human life as a professional basketball player.

During their game against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers star, 39, became the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 career points.

James entered the game needing just nine points to clinch the record.

He ultimately reached the mark in the second quarter with the Lakers up 37-32, after scoring five points in the first.

Moments later, as James headed to the bench, he was given a standing ovation by all in the arena, including his family.

All of this followed a hilarious interaction between James and Nuggets star Nikola Jokic before the game.

“We’re going to stop you, you’re going eight [points],” Jokic told James, prompting laughter from the four-time MVP, as captured by ESPN.

LeBron James surpasses 40,000-point milestone but Lakers fall to Nuggets

LOS ANGELES — LeBron James becoming the first player in league history to score at least 40,000 regular-season points came on a bittersweet night, with the Lakers dropping Saturday’s home matchup to the Denver Nuggets, 124-114, at Crypto.com Arena.

 

It looked like James’ milestone was going to come in a victory, with the Lakers (33-29) leading for most of Saturday.

But the Nuggets (42-19) dominated the late portion of the matchup, closing the fourth on a 16-4 run for their sixth consecutive victory, completing a 3-0 regular-season sweep of the Lakers.

The Lakers have lost their last eight matchups to the Nuggets,  including the four-game sweep in last season’s Western Conference finals.

James finished with 26 points on 12-for-20 shooting to go with nine assists and four rebounds. Rui Hachimura added 23 points on 10-for-15 shooting while being the primary defender against Nikola Jokic (35 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) for significant stretches.

Austin Reaves recorded 19 points to go with a career-high 14 assists. Anthony Davis finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks while D’Angelo Russell had 17 points.

James reached the milestone at the 10:39 mark of the second quarter when he made a layup over Michael Porter Jr. to give the Lakers an early 37-32 lead.

The Lakers called a timeout a little over a minute later, with the organization playing a montage of signature moments from James’ career playing in the arena before James acknowledged the crowd.

The Lakers stayed in front for the remainder of the second, leading 66-58 at halftime, and most of the third before Jokic went on a scoring barrage, scoring 13 points in a 2½ minute-stretch to give the Nuggets an 88-85 lead late in the quarter.

The Lakers got back in front Lakers 110-108 with 4:11 left after a James layup off a Reaves assist.

But the Nuggets took control from there.

Michael Porter Jr. scored 25 points on a perfect 10-for-10 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and four assists. Jamal Murray had 24 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. Aaron Gordon added 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Tatum just talked about his first league game on the Kenny Beecham Podcast. The 25-year-old also discussed how he felt when LeBron blocked his first shot attempt.

Tatum made his NBA debut for the Boston Celtics on October 18, 2017, when he was 19 years old. After getting deep into the paint, Tatum discovered that he was open and received a pass. For the 19-year-old, it was an ideal opportunity to get on the scoreboard. While he was attempting to make the shot, Cleveland Cavaliers great LeBron James stepped up with the block, denying the youngster his maiden field goal attempt. Tatum managed to have a decent game after that, but he remembers the moment like it was yesterday.

During his chat with Beecham, Tatum was asked what was on his mind following the block. JT responded, “I was like ‘Aw s’.” This was Kyrie’s first game back. The energy and environment were wild. I was scared all day because it was my first NBA game, and I was playing against LeBron. And, like a basketball player, everyone will be apprehensive, especially during the game. You are just praying. You’re hoping your first shot goes in, but the exact opposite occurred to me.”

Despite the early setback, Tatum recovered and finished the game with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists, shooting 41.7% from the floor in 37 minutes. Tatum also had a strong rookie season, averaging 13.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 80 games. In addition, the Celtics youngster earned LeBron’s respect at the end of the season.

LeBron James foresaw Jayson Tatum’s stardom

When a true superstar, such as LeBron James, recognizes someone’s greatness during their first season, the player is immediately introduced. Despite the fact that they were Conference Finals competitors, King James was unwavering in his belief that Tatum is destined for greatness. In May 2018, during a post-game press conference, the Cavs star was asked about the rookie.

LeBron stated, “I really adore everything about the kid—the way he plays the game, his personality, where he comes from. I just know he’s made for stardom. He’s built to succeed. And it applies both on and off the floor.” Tatum has come a long way, from earning King James’ respect in his rookie season to carrying the Celtics and receiving huge MVP accolades this season.

Jason Kelce’s decision about whether to retire or not is in. The Philadelphia Eagles center tweeted as much on Monday morning:

While some might hold out hope that he’s coming back for one last ride, it’s widely expected that Kelce will be walking away. Following the Eagles’ playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was reported that Kelce told his teammates he is retiring.

That was back on January 16. It’s now March 4. Kelce’s had time to really think about whether he wants to keep playing or not.

If this is truly it for him, what an incredible ride it’s been for the No. 191 pick from the 2011 NFL Draft. Seven Pro Bowls, six first-team All-Pro honors, and a Super Bowl ring paired with an epic victory parade speech. Kelce is a sure-fire Pro Football Hall of Famer. He’s one of the most — if not THE most — beloved Eagles in franchise history.

And while his playing career might be coming to a close, he appears to have an incredibly bright future ahead of him doing whatever he does next. We’ll be lucky to have Kelce remain in our lives through his podcast with his brother Travis. Plus any other media opportunities he ends up landing.
