Watch Travis Kelce wipe away tears as emotional Jason Kelce retires from NFL

Travis Kelce was visibly emotional on Monday as he witnessed his brother, Jason Kelce, retire after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end sat through the press conference, wiping away tears, as his 36-year-old brother announced his retirement at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex.

Wearing a sleeveless Eagles T-shirt, Jason Kelce struggled to hold back tears as he addressed the media, surrounded by his parents, Ed and Donna, and Travis, who donned sunglasses indoors.

During his emotional speech, which lasted roughly 45 minutes, Jason Kelce reflected on his career, expressing gratitude despite feeling like an underdog throughout his journey.

Selected in the sixth round of the 2011 draft from Cincinnati, Kelce overcame early setbacks, including injuries, to become a cornerstone of the Eagles’ offensive line.

The Kelce brothers notably faced off in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, with Travis’ Chiefs emerging victorious. Despite the loss, Jason maintained a strong bond with his brother, co-hosting a podcast together and supporting each other’s endeavors.

Ending his career with an impressive streak of 156 consecutive starts and six All-Pro Team selections, Jason Kelce played a total of 193 regular-season games for the Eagles.

Reflecting on his time with the team, Kelce expressed gratitude for fulfilling his goal of playing his entire career in one city, emphasizing his love for Philadelphia and its fans.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — One of the most beloved Philadelphia Eagles in franchise history is calling it a career.

After discussing the possibility of retirement for years, Jason Kelce is hanging up his cleats for good this time, announcing the move in a tearful Monday afternoon news conference.

“He means a lot to this city. He’s been here his entire career and wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s one of those regular guys, see him out in Havertown all the time. It’s a rough one,” said Steve Profitt of Havertown.

Through tears Kelce thanked his brother Travis, who was seated in the front row, his parents, wife, coaches, teammates and everyone who made him better.

“He was so sincere. I think that’s why so many Philadelphia fans really love him. Just because he’s like one of us. He don’t hide his emotions, he says it like it is. We love him,” said Kim Davies, of Yardley.

Kelce also thanked the city and the fans for that love, and the fun he’s had playing for the Eagles.

“It has always been a goal of mine to play my whole career in one city and I couldn’t of dreamt of a better one,” Kelce said on spending his career in Philadelphia.

One fan even brought a full keg of Miller Lite and waited outside hoping he would stop.

He’s one of the most beloved athletes in Philadelphia history. We look back at what Jason Kelce means to the Eagles and the city.

“It’s just fitting, you know. The past couple of years he’s been doing a keg to announce he’s coming back for a year, why not a keg to retire?” said William Helms, of West Deptford.

For die-hard Eagles fans the announcement to retire is something they knew was coming, but say that doesn’t make it any easier.

“Every jersey that I buy is someone that I can wear not only when they’re playing but also in retirement. I’ll wear it proudly for him,” said Frank Poljevka from Lumberton, New Jersey.

“He’s an Eagle, Philadelphia guy through and through and he’s going to be greatly missed,” added Dennis Bouchard from Reading.

Kelce has more ties to the Philadelphia area than just being an Eagle. It’s where he first met his wife Kylie.

“I still remember the moment she walked through the door,” Kelce recalled on the night he met his future wife at Buffalo Billiards.

“Him being able to look back on that night and it be so important to him 10 years later is crazy,” noted Jake Collins, the manager of Buffalo Billiards.

Collins told Action News he was there the night Kelce met the love of his life. He says he even helped the Eagles center out of the bar when he had one too many.

He said through it all, Kelce will always go down as being a class act.

“When people say they met the team, Kelce’s the one they remember,” Collins said.

In addition to fans, Philadelphia sports teams also wished Kelce a happy retirement.

Kelce’s teammate, Brandon Graham, shared his kind words on the retirement.

“I’m going to miss him, but I’m excited for what’s to come because I know he’s going to dive right into whatever it is that’s calling him to do,” said Graham.

Jason Kelce has announced his retirement from football in an emotional press conference.

    Jason Kelce announcing his retirement

The Philadelphia Eagles legend burst into tears before he even started speaking and then finally ended months of speculation as he ended his career on Monday after 13 years in the NFL.

Kelce announced the decision with his brother Travis, wife Kylie and parents Ed and Donna in attendance at the Eagles’ team facility.

Speculation first emerged that Kelce would hang up his cleats when the Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January.

However, he refused to announce a definitive decision on his future in the weeks that followed, instead supporting brother Travis throughout the postseason as the Kansas City Chiefs eventually won the Super Bowl.

    Jason Kelce announcing his retirement

Kelce came close to retiring this time last year but decided to stay on for another season after struggling to walk away – a process that was captured on film in his hit Amazon Prime documentary.

Kelce was drafted by the Eagles in 2011 and has enjoyed a sensational 13-year career in Philadelphia.

A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, the center won the Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2018 when they beat the New England Patriots in Minnesota.

The center, who hosts the ultra-successful ‘New Heights’ podcast with his brother Travis and filled in on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football broadcast during his bye week this season, looks destined for a career in broadcasting if he wants it.

He’s already met with executives from Fox and ESPN, according to Front Office Sports, as he used Super Bowl week in Las Vegas to ‘make the rounds’ with networks.

The Sun also reported that there was already a ‘scramble’ among several broadcasters to win Kelce’s services – and that he could make up to $5million per year for his football analysis.

Despite the lucrative offers seemingly waiting for Kelce, he recently admitted to being anxious about what life after football might look like.

‘It’s exciting to think about possibilities, it’s exciting to be able to lose weight, feel good and not have to physically fight for my life every day,’ Kelce, 36, said. ‘It’s also daunting. It’s anxiety. At the end of the day, it’s the unknown.

‘People ask if you get nervous for games but the only games I get nervous for are the first time – you don’t know what is in store. Ironically it makes you play better, it makes your senses alive. But that is kind of where it is at when you start thinking about retirement.

‘It is exciting, the possibilities. All of us were fortunate, we can go in a lot of different areas. But that is also very nerve-wracking, you don’t know what you are going to like until you are doing it. You don’t know what you are going get fulfilment in until you are doing it, you don’t know what you are going to be great at until you are doing it.

‘All that stuff is also in the back of your head. No matter how you handle it, no matter who you are, how well prepared you are to enter the next stage, everybody goes through a level of depression, really.

‘The end of one of the things you love most in your life is there and you are going to have to come to grips with that.

‘You might be struggling and you don’t know it. I feel like you might be struggling in football but you get that win, that little shot, dopamine, like “I got it”. I’m a big ‘hit’ guy.’

Jason Kelce is bidding farewell to his NFL career after dedicating 13 years to playing center for the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a press conference attended by his brother Travis, mother Donna, and father Ed, Jason shared the news that stirred emotions within the entire Kelce family.

As Jason took the stage to deliver the announcement, he became visibly emotional, breaking into tears and remarking, “Not a good start.”

Throughout the press conference, Kelce reflected on his journey in the sport that led him to Super Bowl victory in 2018.

“I’ve been asked many times why I chose football — what drew me to the game — and I never have an answer that quite captures it,” Jason expressed during his poignant declaration. “The best way I can explain it is similar to what draws you to your favorite song … your favorite book. It’s the emotions it evokes. The gravity of it. The intensity.”

He went on, “Stepping onto the field was the most alive and liberated I ever felt. There was a rawness with football, unlike any other sport. The hairs on my arms would stand up. I could make impact, move around like a madman, and then be praised, ‘Good job.’ I cherish football.”

Having spent his entire NFL tenure with the Eagles, Jason took a moment to acknowledge the city of Philadelphia.

“Thirteen seasons in Philadelphia, and I reflect on a career marked by highs and lows,” he remarked. “Nobody celebrates their own like the city of Philadelphia. Athletes become revered in this city, even those whose achievements stretch back decades… You earn love here by going above and beyond to demonstrate that you care, because [the fans] care. They’ve been caring for generations.”

Philadelphia Eagles chairman and CEO, Jeffrey Lurie, praised Kelce in a statement, stating, “Jason was an extraordinary football player; a future Hall of Famer who would have excelled anywhere. But has there ever been a more fitting union between a player, a city, and a team?”

Lurie added, “Jason gave his all for others, battled through injuries, and remained steadfast through the highs and lows of our seasons and his own personal journey. He possesses a multitude of talents — he could share beers with fans at a tailgate, sing on a Christmas album, and raise millions for charity, or discuss X’s and O’s endlessly with coaches and teammates. And then, on the field, he could perform feats that no other offensive lineman could.”

  • Who Will Be the Philadelphia Eagles’ Top Running Back Targets in 2024?

Who Will Be the Philadelphia Eagles’ Top Running Back Targets in 2024?

There are many problem areas the Philadelphia Eagles need to address when it comes to becoming competitive in the NFC. Their issues are so many that it can be hard to imagine how Nick Siriani can completely restore the team to the Super Bowl contenders that gave the Kansas City Chiefs a challenge in Super Bowl LVII.

One of the most problematic areas they need to address is the running back position. While D’Andre Swift was an effective rusher for the Eagles, he fell off in the latter stages of the season and was a non-factor when they lost in the Wild Card round.

With Swift a sure departure from the team, the question now lies on which potential free agent they should target. CBS News’ Anton Ignudo provided potential replacements, and this piece will assess whether they’ll be the right fit for the Eagles.

Running backs the Philadelphia Eagles should target in the 2024 free agency

    Tony Pollard

Many Dallas Cowboys fans will be mad if Tony Pollard makes the jump to their division rivals after spending the past two seasons tearing it up as their first-choice running back.

His last two seasons in Arlington saw him put up an incredible 2012 rushing yards and 15 TDs on 4.5 yards per attempt. He’d be a terrific option for the Philadelphia Eagles who could provide at least three solid years of production from the half-back position.

    Alexander Mattison

The Minnesota Vikings had to make do with Alexander Mattison after Dalvin decided to ditch the team in favor of a terrible stint with the New York Jets.
Minnesota Vikings Alexander MattisonBrad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports
While he wasn’t the one-for-one replacement to Cook’s production, he was an effective running back who got it done for the Vikings. He finished his first full year as a starter with 700 rushing yards on 3.9 yards per carry. If there’s one issue to have with Mattison taking over, it’s the fact that he wasn’t able to punch in any rushing touchdowns through 16 games.

    JK Dobbins

Of the three players in this list, JK Dobbins is at a disadvantage when it comes to body of work. The former Ohio State standout only played for one game during the 2023 season, where he collected 22 rushing yards and a TD on eight rushing attempts.

He was also limited in his sophomore campaign with the Baltimore Ravens, where he carried the ball 92 times for a respectable 520 yards. If the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in acquiring his services in free agency, they’re most likely betting on him repeating the numbers he put up in his rookie season, where he made 134 run attempts for 805 yards and nine touchdowns.

Which running back will the Philadelphia Eagles select in free agency?

There are other outstanding rushers the Philadelphia Eagles can acquire this offseason, but some of them might be too expensive or won’t fit with how Nick Siriani runs his offense. Moreover, they can also try to win D’Andre Swift back if they don’t find a suitable replacement.

However, Swift’s performance would have the Eagles pick up another running back through the draft than run it back with him.

Travis Kelce is a dedicated faп of Taylor Swift.

This seпtimeпtal accessory was crafted with small browп, black, aпd gold beads — a strikiпg comparisoп to the $6,000 “TNT” diamoпd frieпdship bracelet he gifted Swift last year.

While the Kaпsas City Chiefs staпdoυt sported two other bracelets, it remaiпs υпcertaiп what they spelled oυt. However, oпe of the eпgraviпgs seemiпgly begaп with “Travis Kelce is a…”

Travis proυdly showcased the bracelets wheп he reached for a tissυe to dab his eyes dυriпg Jasoп’s heartfelt speech.

Dressed iп a color-blocked bυttoп-dowп, Travis was seated iп the froпt row aloпgside his pareпts, Doппa aпd Ed Kelce, as well as his sister-iп-law, Kylie Kelce.

Jasoп, who eпjoyed a 13-year teпυre iп the NFL, was warmly embraced by his yoυпger brother the momeпt he stepped off stage.

While Travis dressed formally for the occasioп, Jasoп — iп his typical fashioп — opted for a more casυal look, doппiпg a sleeveless Eagles shirt.

Nevertheless, similar to his yoυпger brother, the icoпic ceпter also sported seпtimeпtal jewelry at the press coпfereпce.
