What?

“To be quite honest with you, everybody wanted to see me fail when I got to the league,” some guy named LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers told reporters this weekend after a home loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Nevertheless, that same LeBron James spent the night becoming the only person in the history of sneakers to score at least 40,000 points during his NBA career.

That same LeBron James also was cited by Forbes in June 2022 as the first active player in the league to become a billionare.

Patrick Mahomes isn’t there yet, but stay tuned. His Kansas City Chiefs just won their third Super Bowl in five years, including two in a row. Although they rank 23rd out of the 32 NFL franchises on the Forbes’ team valuation list at $4.3 billion, Mahomes (the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback for the Chiefs) surpassed that same LeBron James and other athletes regarding income from companies airing their television ads.

Patrick Mahomes Sr. and others still wore merchandise throughout the Chiefs’ playoff run with the words “Kansas City vs Everybody.”

Really?

For one, see above.

For another, that slogan copied what those associated with the University of Michigan football team did months earlier.

Courtesy of a sign-stealing scandal involving the NCAA and the Michigan football program, Wolverines players began wearing shirts and winter hats in November saying “Michigan vs. Everybody,” but that’s not why they won their first national championship since 1997.

In addition to a powerful running game, a stifling defense and a highly sought-after head coach in Jim Harbaugh (who eventually bolted after the season for the Los Angeles Chargers), Michigan had quarterback J.J. McCarthy who could become a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Wolverines still wished to be the underdog.

The same was true for the Georgia Bulldogs during the previous college football season after they grabbed a second straight national championship with a record 15 players taken in the NFL Draft in 2022 followed by another 10 picked the following year.

None of that kept Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett from telling Sirius XM radio with a straight face, “There was a lot of people who doubted us, and I know people are gonna be like, ‘no we didn’t.’ Well, yeah you did.”

Huh?

Anyway, returning to the Chiefs, tight end Travis Kelce couldn’t care less his team was in the middle of a dynasty two seasons ago after they won that Super Bowl over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelce told reporters afterward, “Not one of y’all said the Chiefs were gonna take it home this year. Not a single one! Feel that (censored). Feel it! And on top of that, the next time the Chiefs say something, put some respect on our name!”

Folks love being the underdog.

Going back to slingshots, David and Goliath, folks always have loved being the underdog, at least in sports.

Now, yearning for that underdog label is an epidemic throughout sports, but this latest one is beyond ridiculous.

That same LeBron James earned “upwards of $900 million (pretax) off the court, according to Forbes estimates from business ventures and endorsement deals with the likes of PepsiCoPEP -2%, WalmartWMT +1.2% and NikeNKE -1.2%.”

Forbes also said that same LeBron James “has been more than a pitchman, taking equity in brands he works with, including Beats by Dre and the fast-growing Blaze Pizza chain.”

That same LeBron James has accomplished the following after dribbling 20-plus NBA seasons: 20 trips to the NBA All-Star Game; 13 All-NBA First Team selections; four NBA championship rings; five selections to the NBA All-Defensive First Team: four NBA Finals MVP awards; four NBA Most Valuable Player awards; Associated Press Athlete of the Decade pick for the 2010s in addition to serving as the wire service’s Athlete of the Year four times; three-time winner of the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award.

That same Lebron James was on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 18, 2002 as a junior in high school around his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The magazine’s headline was “The Chosen One,” and that same LeBron James proceeded to put a tattoo on his back saying, “Chosen 1.”

Among other glowing things, SI’s Grant Wahl wrote in the article: “Ohio high school junior LeBron James is so good that he’s already being mentioned as the heir to Air Jordon.”

Even so, that same LeBron James continued Saturday night with his underdog claim while describing his NBA journey to reporters. It began in 2003 when he virtually played for his hometown team (as in an extremely supportive fan base) in the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he said, “Everybody was just like, it’s no way he’s going to be able to exceed the expectations that’s put upon him.”

But didn’t that same LeBron James win NBA Rookie of the Year honors?

Yep.

Revealing how many statues will LeBron James have after his NBA career is done?

 

LeBron James is inarguably one of the greatest players in basketball history and whenever his career is over, he will get honored like no other.

But inspired by a recent question posed by our friends at USA TODAY Sports, we recently wondered how many statues James will have around the league when it is all said and done.

James has won championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. He won NBA Finals MVP while playing for each team as well. Is that enough, however, for each organization to eventually put up a statue to tribute his accomplishments?

James will definitely have a statue in Cleveland, the city where is from and where he brought the first and only NBA championship in 2016. It was the only professional title the city had won since 1964.

But will James also get immortalized in Miami and Los Angeles? That is a much harder question to answer.

Miami is the only city where James won multiple championships. But he also did not play for the team for very long, spending just four of his seasons with the Heat.

No one in franchise history has a statue for the Heat, though Dwyane Wade will soon become the first. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes that James did enough to warrant a statue in Miami.

We can expect Wade will have the solo honor of immortalization in South Beach for a bit before the team considers the same treatment for his former teammate.

Perhaps a tougher task for James is earning a statue in Los Angeles.

There are currently six former players (Shaquille O’Neal, Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, and Kobe Bryant) who have statues for the Lakers.

James didn’t spend nearly as much time with the team as any of the players listed above, but he did break the NBA’s all-time scoring record previously held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar while wearing a Lakers jersey.

Should he win another title with Los Angeles, perhaps the possibility will become more realistic. Otherwise, though, it seems most likely that James has just one statue outside an NBA arena once his career is over.

LeBron’s 40,000th point came early in the second quarter and was followed by a standing ovation for the four-time MVP.

Unfortunately, the evening’s excitement was dulled somewhat with the Lakers ultimately losing 124-114 to the reigning Champions.

Despite this, LeBron and Savannah took the opportunity to enjoy a night out together in celebration of his momentous achievement.

Wearing white shoes, pants, and a T-shirt, LeBron paired these with a denim jacket, a white beanie, and a selection of jewelry, as he headed out to dinner in his vintage green soft-top Ford Bronco.

By his side was Savannah, wearing an all-blue coat and pant combo, paired with a bandanna and white shoes.

Having squeezed himself into the Bronco, the 6-foot-9 NBA legend headed out for dinner at Nobu in Malibu, California.

Later, LeBron and Savannah made their way to SoHo House, overlooking the Pacific.

Savannah has been by LeBron’s side throughout his career, having first met as 16-year-olds in Ohio.

They have since had three children together, LeBron ‘Bronny’ James Jr., 19, Bryce Maximus, 16, and Zhuri Nova, nine.

And while LeBron has long been cemented as one of the all-time greats of the NBA, it seems the family name may not leave the league any time soon.

USC star guard Bronny is reportedly weighing his options at the moment, as he debated returning to the Trojans for another season versus declaring for the Draft.

“I don’t value a young player getting into the lottery as much as I do getting him on the right team in the right developmental situation,” he said.

Paul added that Bronny joining LeBron on a roster is not a requirement.

Taylor Swift has jetted out of Australia after her father Scott was accused of assaulting a local photographer on Tuesday morning.

The American singer’s private jet was seen leaving Sydney Airport just hours after the alleged incident.

The global megastar, 34, performed her final Eras Tour concert in the city on Monday night.

The Bombardier Global 6000, which both Taylor and her boyfriend Travis Kelce used to fly to Australia, was seen taxiing down the runway at around midday.

Taylor’s team and her father are all thought to be onboard.

‘Two individuals were aggressively pushing their way towards Taylor, grabbing at her security personnel and threatening to throw a female staff member into the water,’ she said.

However, Mr McDonald – the chief executive of Matrix Media Group – slammed the statement as ‘utter rubbish’ and said the only female at the scene was Taylor.

‘This is the sort of bulls**t I might expect,’ he said. ‘Which female was that? The only one there was Taylor.’

Mr McDonald said the altercation was caught on camera and did not show the photographers acting aggressively.

An investigation into the alleged incident has been launched by the North Shore Police Command.

The photographer previously accused Scott of ‘charging’ at him once he was off the superyacht with Taylor.

He originally thought it was a security guard and was shocked when he realised the alleged attacker was the pop star’s dad.

Mr McDonald also said he didn’t know what triggered the alleged assault.

‘In 23 years of taking pictures, I have never seen anything like it,’ he said.

‘She got off the boat, she walked towards security guards who were shoving umbrellas in our faces.’
