Age is Just a Number: LeBron James, 39, Inspires Lakers to Seventh Win in Nine Games, Surpassing Wembanyama’s “5×5” Achievement with 30+ Points.

LeBron James had 30 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame Victor Wembanyama’s historic “5×5” statistical performance for their seventh victory in nine games, 123-118 over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

Wembanyama had 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in his first road game against the Lakers. The French rookie sensation added five blocked shots and five steals, making him the youngest player in NBA history and the 15th overall to achieve the rare 5×5 – at least five points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals in one game.

“He doesn’t have a ceiling,” James said of Wembanyama. “He can do whatever he wants to do in his career. It seems like he enjoys the game. It seems like he puts the work in, just from the outside looking in. … I said a long time ago how special he was, and it’s really that simple.”

Wembanyama fell one one assist shy of a 5×5 game in Sacramento on Thursday night, only to hit the mark one night later in Los Angeles in just 30 minutes, 55 seconds of play – the smallest amount of playing time in a 5×5 performance in league history.

Wembanyama also joined Michael Jordan as the only players to get at least five steals and five blocks in consecutive games.

“I wonder if (Jordan) did it in wins, not losses,” Wembanyama said. “To me, it´s secondary. Hopefully in the future we can look back and see this as a good performance, but as of today, I can´t be satisfied in a loss.”

Wembanyama scored 16 points in a dominant first quarter, but Anthony Davis answered his fellow No. 1 overall pick’s challenge with impressive play in the next two quarters while the Lakers maintained their lead.

Davis racked up 28 points and 13 rebounds before sitting out the entire fourth quarter of the second game in a back-to-back set. Jaxson Hayes performed capably in his place against Wembanyama while James led the Lakers to their 12th win in 18 games.

“(James) powered through some good stretches and some tough stretches, but all in all, when we needed him to make plays, make shots, he stepped up and he did that,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “Coming out of the All-Star break, everything is a little topsy-turvy. Guys are still trying to get back in rhythm to where we were beforehand, but I thought (James) was good.”

San Antonio finished on a 17-5 run in the final 3 1/2 minutes to trim the final margin considerably.

D’Angelo Russell had 22 points and six assists on his 28th birthday, while Rui Hachimura added 17 points for the Lakers, who haven’t been able to move higher ninth place in the Western Conference standings despite their surge in recent weeks. Los Angeles returned from the All-Star break with a loss to Golden State on Thursday.

James came back strong after missing the Lakers´ last two games to rest his sore ankle, although he played in the All-Star Game in between.

“I can´t tell you how we´re going to be each and every single day,” James said. “We just put the work in and live with the results. We approach the game the right way defensively. Offensively, we continue to share the ball. … If we defend, we get back in transition and we clean glass when teams miss, we´ll give ourselves a chance to win every night.”

Wembanyama embraced his first opportunity to play underneath the Lakers’ wall of championship banners by getting off to a brilliant start, racking up 13 points and three rebounds while drawing two fouls from Davis in the game’s first six minutes alone. He was up to 20 points by halftime, but was just 2 for 6 after halftime.

Malaki Branham scored 17 points and Jeremy Sochan had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs, who have lost three straight and 10 of 11. They’re 1-6 on their nine-game annual Rodeo Road Trip.

San Antonio snapped its franchise-record losing streak at 18 games in these teams’ last meeting in December.

LeBron James Provides Honest Perspective on Bronny James’ NBA Draft Decision amidst USC’s Unsteady Performance.

LeBron James Provides Honest Perspective on Bronny James’ NBA Draft Decision amidst USC’s Unsteady Performance.

Will Bronny James declare for the draft? LeBron chimes in on the looming decision.

Bronny James’ first college season with USC basketball is slowly coming to a close, and needless to say, it’s been underwhelming. He’s struggled to score the basketball and overall has averages of 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

Not exactly great. That raises the question, will Bronny actually declare for the 2024 NBA Draft?

Well, according to his dad LeBron James, the decision is fully up to the youngster as The King alluded to on Sunday before the NBA All-Star Game.

Via Lakers Nation: “It’s up to him. It’s up to the kid (Bronny James). We’re going to go through the whole process. He’s still in season now. He has the Pac-12 tournament coming up. … We’re going to weigh all options, and we’re going to let the kid make the decision.”

Given how he’s played, it’s hard to imagine Bronny going any higher than the second round. Yes, his name is obviously an attraction, but the freshman hasn’t proved that he’s capable of playing at the next level and excelling. He’s failed to do that in college so far.

LeBron has been vocal about playing with Bronny James before he ultimately retires, and if the latter does return to USC for one more year, that could complicate the plan.

But it doesn’t appear The King is planning to call it quits anytime soon. After all, he’s still balling out at 39 years old.

The Trojans are just 4-11 in Pac-12 play and 10-16 overall. At this rate, it’s unlikely they even make the NCAA Tournament, which could’ve been a perfect mo

LeBron James ’50/50’between having farewell tour or ‘just Tim Duncan it’

LeBron James ’50/50’between having farewell tour or ‘just Tim Duncan it’

LeBron James confirmed the one thing we know about the 39-year-old All-Star: He doesn’t have many years remaining.

He also said he hasn’t decided how he wants to exit: With a Jordan or Kobe-style farewell tour, or just shock the league and walk away.

“I have not mapped out how many seasons I have left. I know it’s not that man,” LeBron said Sunday, meeting with the media before what will be his record 20th NBA All-Star Game. “I also don’t know if I will… I was asked this question a couple days ago. Will you kind of take the farewell tour, or will you kind of just Tim Duncan it?

“I’m 50-50, I’m going to be honest, because there’s times when I feel like I guess I owe it to my fans that have been along this journey with me for two decades plus, to be able to give them that moment where it’s every city and whatever the case may be and they give you your flowers or whatever the case may be. That seems cool.

“But the other side of I’ve never been that great with accepting like praise. It’s a weird feeling for me. I never really talked about it much, but it’s just a weird feeling for me. So to go in each city, if that’s the case — I don’t know. I’ve seen Mike’s, I’ve seen Kobe’s. I’ve seen a lot of guys. I just don’t know how much I — how I’d feel. I don’t know if I’d feel great about it.”

If one were cynical, one would suggest that the money to be made on a farewell tour documentary — put together by his production company — is too much just to walk away from.

We can all hope that he has that choice, that an injury doesn’t rob him of the ability to walk away on his own terms. He has earned that right, but the basketball gods are not always kind.

To that end, LeBron said he got treatment on his ankle (which kept him out of the Lakers’ final game before the break in Utah) and that he was “trying to get my ankle as strong and as back to where I feel confident that I can finish off this last third of the season.” He said he would get more treatment this week.

Speculation has been flying in league circles about LeBron possibly leaving the Lakers this offseason — he has a $51.4 million player option — although that feels more like a leverage play to get the front office to act than anything else. LeBron briefly touched on the idea of ending his career as a Laker.

“I am a Laker, and I am happy and been very happy being a Laker the last six years, and hopefully it stays that way,” LeBron said. “But I don’t have the answer to how long it is or which uniform I’ll be in. Hopefully it is with the Lakers. It’s a great organization and so many greats. But we’ll see.

“I don’t know how it’s going to end, but it’s coming. It’s coming, for sure.”

  • LeBron James: A Legacy Extending Far Beyond the NBA Court.

LeBron James: A Legacy Extending Far Beyond the NBA Court.

LeBron James: A Legacy Extending Far Beyond the NBA Court.

From a burgeoning media empire to his charitable foundation, James has thrived in a variety of endeavors outside the gym.

Mya Smiley is a student at the University of Akron thanks to an assist from LeBron James, and she is determined upon graduation to become a social worker that helps foster kids.

Her education and career path would not have been possible, the sophomore says, were it not for a scholarship and counseling that she received from the LeBron James Family Foundation. “He’s life-changing,” Smiley said.

For all his accomplishments on the basketball court — four championships, 19 All-Star Game nominations and an imminent coronation as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer — it is James’ ambitious pursuits off-the-court that may ultimately distinguish his legacy from other superstar athletes.

James co-founded a successful media and entertainment company, bought stakes in storied professional baseball and soccer franchises and, with a big assist from product endorsements, his net worth is estimated to have grown above $1 billion. The off-court achievement that James is most proud of, he says, is working to uplift the lives of people like Smiley in his hometown of Akron.

Many athletes have excelled in one or more of these areas. But few have done all of them as well as James, who is closing in on passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA’s career scoring record.

“His goal, I believe, is to have 10% of his wealth go to causes and support communities, which is an amazing goal,” said Lisa Delpy Neirotti, a professor of sports management at George Washington University. “I would say he’s maybe above and beyond others, just on that aspiration alone.”

James is, by any measure, an overwhelming success. And he makes Smiley — one of the many people in Akron who have received financial support from his foundation — believe that she can be a success as well.

“If I did not have the LeBron program, I probably wouldn’t have ever gone to college. I would be living in a not-so-positive environment,” said the 19-year-old Smiley.

“His ability to help people’s futures,” she added, “is what makes LeBron a great person.”

James, who entered the NBA straight after high school in 2003, planned early on to use his talents, fame — and, yes, his growing financial resources — to have on impact on the world beyond basketball.

“Even before I got into the NBA, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back to my community,” said James. Although James bounced from home to home during his childhood, and experienced financial insecurity for many of those years, he also was given enormous support from friends, neighbors and educators.

The LeBron James Family Foundation, founded in 2004, at first gained local attention by giving away bikes and backpacks. Then it began looking at after-school programs, with students scattered across several dozen schools, and eventually created a public school currently serving about 575 third through eighth graders. Today the school includes a family resource center that provides a wide-range of services to parents, including mental health, financial literacy, legal aid and GED courses.

Just down the street from the school, the foundation provides rent-free housing to as many as 16 different families — when needed — and it has plans to build 50 units of affordable housing.

“I couldn’t have guessed how much it would grow,” James said in late January. “But we got here by listening and responding to our community and what they need.”

James has made over $400 million in NBA salary during his time with Cleveland, Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers. Another $100 million is on the way in the next 2-1/2 years or so.

James is a pitchman for Nike, GMC, AT&T and many more multinational companies. He owns a piece of the Boston Red Sox and England’s Liverpool football club. His entertainment company, SpringHill — named after the modest apartment complex he grew up in — is valued at $725 million and has produced movies for HBO and Netflix.

“He’s been a brilliant example for millions of kids, especially kids with lesser opportunity and haven’t had the same advantages as others,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said in 2018, a sentiment he’s repeated many times since. “They see in this guy somebody who has consistently exhibited excellence in the workplace and gives them a voice and lets them know that you can speak about anything.”

James puts so much focus on giving back to Akron because of the help people there gave to him and his family. “He’s never lost sight of that,” said Michele Campbell, the executive director of James’ foundation. “I think that keeps him grounded.”

Just how down to earth “King James” really was got called into question in 2010. That’s when he went on television to announce that he was leaving Cleveland to play in Miami. Billed as “The Decision” — and broadcast on ESPN — the live event was widely ripped as egotistical. But from James’ perspective, the broadcast raised around $4 million for charity, a fact that was largely overlooked.

Just a couple of years later, James would use his star power to help draw attention to a cause bigger than himself.

In the aftermath of the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin — a Black Florida teen who was wearing a hoodie when he was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer — James tweeted a photo of Heat players wearing hoodies and bowing their heads that included the hashtag “WeWantJustice.”

In 2020, James helped lead the “More Than A Vote” movement, which included registration and early-vote drives and stressed the need for people — particularly Black voters — to get to the polls to fight disenfranchisement.

Also in 2020, in the aftermath of the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd, James was one of the players calling for an end to racial inequality and police brutality.

“Everything I do,” James said late last year, “has to have a purpose.”

James has all the money and all the fame that he ever wanted or needed. His NBA records, including the scoring title, are going to last for a very long time.

    As will his off-court endeavors.

“His ability to help others and put others first is what makes him a great person,” Smiley said. “Not the baskets he shot.”

Warriors Cruise to 128-110 Victory over LeBron James-less Lakers, Fueled by Stephen Curry’s 32-Point Showcase.

Stephen Curry started hitting big shots from the start and the Golden State Warriors dominated the Lakers without LeBron James, helping take at least some of the sting out of a double-overtime collapse when the California rivals met last month.

Curry scored 32 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and had eight assists, leading the Warriors past the Lakers 128-110 on Thursday night as both teams returned for from the All-Star break.

With the makeup of this Golden State roster, Curry has taken it upon himself to be more aggressive looking for his shot from the opening tip.

“Just him and getting the crowd engaged, bringing a lot of energy, I think it fuels us and sets the tone for the rest of the game,” said rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis, who scored 17 points off the bench on his 24th birthday. “Having someone with that caliber shooting the ball like that, you just want to give him as many shots as possible because you know that when he´s in that zone it’s hard to stop.”

With his 6,000th career assist, Curry became the eighth player in NBA history with at least 23,000 points and 6,000 assists – joining James, Russell Westbrook, Kobe Bryant, James Harden, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and John Havlicek.

Curry made nine of his initial 12 shots with five 3s for 25 points by halftime after scoring 16 in the opening period. He had five straight shortly before halftime as the Warriors led 67-56 at the break – his 16th time this season with at least 20 in one half.

“I think he feels like it´s OK for him to get going right away,” coach Steve Kerr said, “this team can use that.”

The two-time MVP hit six or more 3-pointers for the fifth time in six games and wound up shooting 12 for 24 on the way to his fourth 30-point performance in the last six games.

Anthony Davis had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and D’Angelo Russell contributed 18 points, nine assists and five rebounds to lead the Lakers, who were without James because of a left ankle injury that also sidelined the 39-year-old forward Feb. 14 at Utah before the break.

Los Angeles had its three-game winning streak snapped with just a second defeat in eight games – and this one was a drastic difference from the last meeting when the Lakers rallied from 15 points down to beat the Warriors 145-144 in double overtime at Chase Center on Jan. 27.

Andrew Wiggins added 20 points for Golden State, while Jonathan Kuminga reached double figures for a career-best 34th straight game with 12 points as the Warriors won for the ninth time in 11 games since that loss to the Lakers.

James had a triple-double in that game with 36 points, 20 rebounds and 12 assists.

Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham called James’ injury a “day-to-day thing.”

“When we wake up in the morning we´ll figure it out,” Ham said.

James has left ankle peroneal tendinopathy, inflammation of the tendons on the outside of his foot.

Klay Thompson missed his first six shots and two 3s before connecting from deep with 45 seconds remaining in the third and finished with just three points on 1-for-9 shooting but had five assists and four rebounds.

Kerr expects veteran guard Chris Paul to return on the upcoming trip after recovering from surgery for a fractured left hand.

LeBron James maintains that Bronny will be the one to make final decision on NBA entry

LeBron James maintains that Bronny will be the one to make final decision on NBA entry

Ahead of his record-setting 20th NBA All-Star appearance, LeBron James touched on his son’s future.

LeBron James hinted at retirement in a few years at NBA All-Star Weekend andmade it public he would love to play with his son, USC freshman Bronny James, before that happens. Broadcasters asked the elder James about Bronny James entering the 2024 NBA Draft and left the question open ended.

“It’s up to him. It’s up to the kid,” James told TNT’s Inside the NBA ahead of Sunday’s All-Star Game. “Obviously we gonna go through the whole process. He’s still in season now, has the Pac-12 tournament coming up. … We gonna weigh our options, and we gonna let the kid make the decision.”

Bronny James, a four-star combo guard rated as the 26th-best nationally, is still in the developmental stages of his career and does not project as a lottery selection in the 2024 NBA Draft should he choose the one-and-done route. He’s averaging 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as a freshman at USC and hasn’t yet found his comfort zone offensively.

LeBron James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin last year that he’s “got to be on the floor with Bronny” before his career is over.

“Either in the same uniform or a matchup against him,” James said. “I don’t mean like [guarding one another all game]—because he’s a point guard and I’m a—at this point now I’m playing center or whatever the team needs from me. But I would love to do the whole Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. thing. That would be ideal for sure.”

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer and future Hall of Famer said in Indianapolis at All-Star Weekend he has “a lot to think about” when the season is over.

“I don’t care how many more points I score, or what I can or cannot do on the floor,” James said. “The real question for me is, ‘Can I play without cheating this game?’ The day I can’t give the game everything on the floor is the day I’ll be done. Lucky for you guys, that day is not today.”

If Bronny James declares for the 2024 NBA Draft and is selected, much of that could be due to a franchise believing it has a chance to land LeBron James as well.

“His NBA upside, based solely on his own merit as a prospect, is much less clear,” says 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein said last year. “His NBA projection depends on the extent to which his father ties the end of his career to Bronny’s location. There is very little precedent for a 6-foot-3 combo-guard to be a first-round pick, much less a lottery pick, without being a dynamic playmaker.”

Bronny James is back in action next weekend at UCLA after scoring two points in an overtime loss to Colorado last time out.
