Lakers star LeBron James comes to Berkeley for Cal-USC game

While the Warriors were playing on the other side of the country on Wednesday night, their longtime nemesis LeBron James was in the Bay Area, taking in some college basketball.

The Lakers star flew to Berkeley for Wednesday’s sold-out Pac-12 matchup between USC and Cal. James was in the house by tip-off to watch his son, Bronny, who is a freshman at USC and got the start for the Trojans on Wednesday.

Rumors began circulating about James’ potential presence in Haas Pavilion about three hours before the 8 p.m. tip-off, with the contest being the first sellout Cal has had for men’s basketball in seven years.

James’ Lakers are back on the West Coast after an eight-day, five-game road trip out East, finishing with a 124-118 win over the Hornets on Monday in Charlotte. The Lakers are back in action Thursday against the Denver Nuggets in Los Angeles, likely making this a quick trip to the Bay Area for LeBron.

But could LeBron be back in the Bay Area for Bronny and USC’s next game? The Lakers have a back-to-back, playing the Pelicans at home on Friday night before getting three days off in a row. The Trojans play the second leg of their Bay Area road trip against Stanford on Saturday night at Maples Pavilion. It wouldn’t be a shock to see James back in NorCal to watch his son.

Bronny James playing at all in the 2023-24 season is itself noteworthy after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a practice in July. But Bronny was cleared to return in late November, made his collegiate debut a few weeks later — with dad LeBron in the crowd — and has become a contributor for the Trojans since.

The younger James didn’t play at the top of his game in the University of Southern California basketball team’s recent matchup against Stanford University on Feb. 10, at least from a scoring standpoint.

In 24 minutes of playing time for the Trojans, he scored just six points on 2-of-7 shooting from the field and 1-of-3 shooting from deep. The younger James also chipped in three rebounds, three assists and one steal in the Trojans’ 31-point road loss.

The 19-year-old didn’t fare any better as a scorer in his team’s overtime loss to the University of California, Berkeley on Feb. 7. He logged 28 minutes of action against the Golden Bears but totaled just five points on 1-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.

The younger James has appeared in 16 games with the Trojans so far in the 2023-24 regular season, his freshman season with the team, and is averaging 5.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 35.6 percent from the field and 27.1 percent from deep.

The teenager hasn’t experienced much team success in his first season of college basketball. The Trojans own a 9-15 record on the season following their loss to the Cardinal and are losers of eight of their last nine games.

As for the elder James, he remains one of the NBA’s top players despite the fact that he turned 39 years old in December. He has missed just six games for the Los Angeles Lakers so far in the 2023-24 regular season and is averaging 24.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game on 51.9 percent shooting from the field and 39.3 percent from 3-point range.

“[Bronny] already got the DNA,” added Davis. “Now you got the whole layout, the whole trajectory, and the blueprint laid out for you.”

The elder James recently earned the 20th All-Star nod of his pro career, which is the most of any player in NBA history. For comparison, former Lakers star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has the second-most All-Star appearances in league history, as he racked up 19 during his playing days.

All-Star weekend in Indianapolis is here, with some familiar names, some new faces, a nod to nostalgia and a bit of unwinding for everyone before the stretch run of the season. Most of the 54 players who will be part of the weekend’s on-court festivities – and quite a few more are coming as well – began arriving on Thursday.

The rundown of events, and there are dozens, officially opened Thursday night with a tip-off party. Indiana All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton showed up in the ultimate Hoosier State style, in an IndyCar – the state may be hoops-crazy, but auto racing is pretty big here as well – driven by Indiana native Conor Daly, a two-time top-10 finisher at the Indianapolis 500.

 

Haliburton shared the stage with another legend of basketball in Indiana – Larry Bird, who handed Haliburton a ceremonial golden basketball.

“The fans are excited. I’m excited,” Haliburton said. “It’s a chance to showcase our city.”

For James, it’s his 21st All-Star weekend in his 21 NBA seasons. He didn’t make the All-Star Game as a rookie; he made the weekend as part of the rookie game. He’s made every All-Star Game since, now the first player to be picked for the showcase in 20 different seasons. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a 19-time selection.

Added to the slate for Saturday: a 3-point contest between NBA shooting king Stephen Curry and WNBA 3-point contest record-holder Sabrina Ionescu.

There’s a game between a pair of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as the NBA continues to give HBCU institutions part of the All-Star spotlight. This year, the game is Virginia Union against Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon. This weekend, a glass LED court is set to be part of the show on Friday and Saturday. There’s even a fan event called NBA Crossover, set up in a 350,000-square-foot space where ticketholders can try virtual reality headsets, test out the latest offerings from Jordan Brand, play with an airless basketball, even get a haircut while playing video games. And there’s a brunch honoring icons of the game on Sunday, an event that’s almost as tough a ticket to get as the game itself.

“Honestly, it’s just amazing to be an All-Star,” Banchero said. The Orlando forward was at All-Star weekend last year for rookie and skills events – this year, he’s got events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, having made the big game for the first time.

Banchero is one of four first-time All-Stars, joining New York’s Brunson, Philadelphia’s Maxey and Toronto’s Barnes. Plenty of other players are part of the weekend for the first time; that’s what events like the Rising Stars games are about, to give the league’s top promising players a chance to get a feel for the big stage.

“I’m excited to get there, excited to let it all sink in,” said San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft who has the Rising Stars games and the skills competition on his on-court calendar this weekend.

Above all else, it’s a weekend for the fans. The All-Stars who’ll play Sunday combined to get more than 60 million votes from fans around the world. The game will be shown in more than 210 countries and territories, broadcast in 60 languages, and fans from at least 34 different nations have bought tickets to come to Indianapolis this weekend.

They probably don’t care who wins. They just want to see a show.

“I try to do it for them,” James said. “They’ve been along this journey for so long. It’s pretty cool to still be able to do it and do it at this level.”

Lakers Open to the Possibility of Drafting Bronny James Next Season, Agent Rich Paul Confirms; LeBron James Shows Continued Dedication to the Team Amid Warriors’ Interest.

The Lakers are reportedly willing to consider adding LeBron James‘ son, Bronny, next season as chatter increases regarding the star’s future in LA.

James can become a free agent this summer if he declines his $51million option, and ESPN reported that the Warriors inquired about his availability ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

Neither the Lakers nor James were reportedly interested in the move, but The Athletic have reported that the franchise could ‘explore’ drafting Bronny, with his father’s ‘happiness truly matter[ing] to the organization.’

 

James has previously indicated a desire to play with his eldest son.

Bronny is currently a freshman at USC, but does not look quite NBA-ready thus far.

He’s averaged 5.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists on just 35.6 percent shooting.

Bronny missed the first eight games of the season after suffering a cardiac arrest over the summer during a team practice.

The Lakers may not own their 2024 first-round pick (depending on if the Pelicans, as part of the previous trade for Anthony Davis, decide to defer the pick to 2025) but do own what is projected to be a late second-round pick – which could be a natural landing spot for Bronny.

Either way, James’ agent, Rich Paul said Wednesday that his client remains ‘committed’ to the purple and gold.

‘He’s committed to the Lakers,’ Paul said on the Stephen A. Smith Show.

‘[Owner] Jeanie [Buss] has been an incredible partner for him and us. And I think it’s important for that to be understood and to be respected. Obviously there’s ups and downs and emotions throughout the course of a season, but ultimately LeBron’s committed to the Lakers.’

Paul previously shut down rumors that James would be moved ahead of the trade deadline.

‘LeBron won’t be traded, and we aren’t asking to be,’ he told ESPN.

Philadelphia’s Daryl Morey also made an offer for the Lakers captain, according to the network.

While James has been his typical brilliant self this season, the Lakers sat in just ninth place in the West at 29-26 entering Wednesday.
