The Kansas City Chiefs might have won the Super Bowl this season, but that doesn’t mean everything is peachy in Missouri. In fact, one could argue that Kansas City won in spite of their glaring weaknesses. There’s a reason why Mahomes played his first away playoff game this season, or why the Chiefs were underdogs in most of their games.

With the offseason coming up, it’s an opportunity for the Chiefs to reload and retool their roster. Of course, that likely means revamping some of their position groups to reload for next season. While all of the talk is around the big time free agents, there’s some under-the-radar players that the team can sign in the offseason.

Chiefs’ needs in 2024 free agency

What do the Chiefs need in the upcoming free agency period? Well, the first and foremost issue to be addressed is the wide receiver position. Kansas City’s wide receiver room was lackluster at best and downright horrendous at worst. Rashee Rice emerged as a possible threat, but Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s maddening inconsistency and Kadarius Toney existing made everything worse.

Another notable area that will need to be addressed is their defense. The Chiefs’ defense arguably carried the team to the Super Bowl, but they’re set to lose multiple players to free agency. Players such as Drue Tranquill, L’Jarius Sneed, Chris Jones, Willie Gay, and Mike Edwards are set to hit free agency.

Left tackle is yet another position that could be due for a change, with Donovan Smith potentially leaving the Chiefs. Considering the talent available in free agency, though, don’t expect the Chiefs to sign a free agent tackle to protect Patrick Mahomes’ blindside.

Tyler Boyd, Bengals, WR 

If the Chiefs play their cards right, they can probably have a go at some of the top wide receivers in free agency. Michael Pittman Jr and Tee Higgins are both studs that can give Mahomes a much better chance of succeeding. They can also try and have a go at Calvin Ridley or Gabe Davis as well.

However, one name that could be a big help for the Chiefs in another Bengals wide receiver. Tyler Boyd might not be in the top five of this year’s wide receiver class, but he’s still a solid receiver who can function as a WR2/WR1 in the right system. Depending on how they feel about Rice’s improvement, they can put  Boyd as their top guy or the second-in-command.

The move also has the added benefit of weakening one of their rivals, as Kansas City will take one of Joe Burrow’s best weapons. Even without that benefit, though, the Chiefs will love having a player of Boyd’s caliber on the team.

Tyron Smith, Cowboys, LT

Look, we just said that the Chiefs aren’t likely going to turn to free agency to address their needs at left tackle. That doesn’t mean that they need to ignore one of the better blindside tackles when he’s available, no? Tyron Smith is coming off of his contract, and the Chiefs could definitely use his help in the trenches.

Donnovan Smith was a disaster for the Chiefs last season, committing multiple penalties and giving up pressure in key scenarios. For a team that has prided itself in protecting Mahomes to the best of their ability, they struggled to do that last season. Mahomes is elite at avoiding pressure, but that’s not an excuse to neglect the line.

There’s certainly some worries about Tyron Smith for the Chiefs. He’s on the older side, and he’s dealt with a litany of injuries during his career. If he does pan out for Kansas City, though, they’ll have one of the best blindside blockers in the entire league. Despite the injury woes, Smith still earned second-team All-Pro honors and was the anchor of the Cowboys’ elite offensive line.

Chidobe Awuzie, Bengals, CB

Another Bengals player? Well, this time, it’s on the opposite end of the spectrum. L’Jarius Sneed was a key contributor for the Chiefs this season, but he may have played himself out of KC. Sneed enters the NFL free agency period as the best cornerback, and you bet teams will line up to try and sign the star cornerback.

 

Now, Brett Veach will absolutely try to keep Sneed in tow. He’s the best lockdown corner in the league, and players of his caliber don’t grow on trees. However, they do have to be prepared with a backup plan in case it doesn’t pan out.

Chidobe Awuzie isn’t anyone’s first choice when it comes to top cornerbacks. After an injury in 2022, Awuzie started the season off flat and never quite recovered for the Bengals. However, before that dreaded ACL tear, Awuzie was one of the best lockdown corners in the league as well.

The Chiefs will be banking on Awuzie bouncing back after a down year due to injury in this scenario. And even if Sneed does re-sign, it never hurts to add depth to a fatigued Super Bowl roster.

The NFL stars issυed a heartfelt мessage to their fans before Wednesday’s episode of the <eм>New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce</eм> podcast, which is pre-recorded and will featυre gυests Chris Long and Beaυ Allen.

“Attention 92%ers, we have a pre-recorded episode for yoυ gυys coмing υp on Wednesday, bυt after the tragic events of the Sυper Bowl parade in Kansas City, it didn’t feel right withoυt yoυ gυys hearing froм υs first,” said Travis, 34, at the start of the special podcast intro released online on Monday.

“We jυst wanted to say oυr hearts go oυt to all of the victiмs, their faмilies, Chiefs Kingdoм, and really all of Kansas City that was really there on a day to try and celebrate the coммυnity,” added Jason, 36.

“It’s υnfortυnate, and deeply tragic the events that occυrred. So we want to thank the local law enforceмent that sprang into action, the first responders on scene, and anybody that’s been willing to help those affected by this tragedy,” he continυed.

Travis reмinded their fans that an eмergency response fυnd has been set υp to help sυpport the victiмs and their faмilies, as well as violence prevention, мental health services, and first responders.

Jason praised the Kansas City coммυnity for “coмing together and rallying aroυnd the people that have been affected” by the tragedy.

“One of the beaυtifυl things that we have in doing this podcast is the wonderfυl coммυnity oυt there — the 92%ers — everybody that watches this show,” he continυed.

“We’re still figυring oυt a way for υs to be involved. Obvioυsly, yoυ can donate to these links right now, bυt we plan on doing soмething in the fυtυre. We’re trying to get that sitυated right now. [We] have soмe ideas, bυt jυst мake sυre yoυ’re following, and we’ll be telling yoυ gυys ways that we’re trying to get involved,” said Jason.

Their мessage coмes a few days after the Kansas City Chiefs tight end and his charity, Eighty-Seven &aмp; Rυnning, donated $100,000 to a GoFυndMe benefiting Madison “Madi” Rose Reyes, 10, and Melia Reese Reyes, 8, who were injυred at the parade.

The sisters, who were both shot in the legs, also received a visit froм Chiefs qυarterback Patrick Mahoмes and his wife Brittany.

“In a tiмe where they are traυмatized, saddened, and worried, having a sυrprise appearance froм Patrick and Brittany Mahoмes broυght the first sмile to their faces since tragedy strυck. New Delhi: In Indianapolis, Indiana, the Eastern Conference outperformed the Western Conference with a dominant performance to win the 73rd NBA All-Star Game. Damian Lillard led the way with 39 points as the Eastern Conference destroyed the Western Conference 211-186 thanks to a record-setting effort.

The East broke the one-team record of 196 points set by the West in 2016 with the help of Tyrese Haliburton of Indiana and Jaylen Brown of Boston, who both scored 36 points off the bench. Milwaukee’s guard Lillard won the Most Valuable Player award by making an incredible eleven 3-pointers out of 23 attempts and going 14-of-26 overall.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the captain of the East, scored 23 points and was named the MVP of the 2021 All-Star Game. After the game, the Greek-Nigerian professional basketball player for the Milwaukee Bucks showed his children the coveted trophy in a heartwarming gesture.

Karl-Anthony Towns’s fruitless efforts

Karl-Anthony Towns of Minnesota failed to halt the East’s offensive momentum despite his game-high 50 points after coming off the bench. The Timberwolves player led Oklahoma City to a defeat despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s heroic 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Towns made NBA history by being just the fourth player to score fifty or more points in an All-Star game. Only Jayson Tatum (55 in 2023) and Anthony Davis (52 in 2017) have scored as many points in the history of the game as he did with his 50, which equaled him with Stephen Curry (2022).

A night to remember

In addition to shattering the single-team record for the All-Star Game (211 points), the East also broke the mark for the most combined points in one exciting evening. The former record was broken by 23 points with the 397 total points. LeBron James, the legendary player for the Los Angeles Lakers and four-time NBA MVP, made his record-tying 20th All-Star appearance at the age of 39, albeit he didn’t play much basketball. Due to a left ankle injury, James was limited to just eight points in 14 minutes and did not play in the second half.

During the 73rd NBA All-Star Game on Sunday night in Indianapolis, Damian Lillard produced some unforgettable memories. He scored 39 points and drained 11 three-pointers to win MVP of the Eastern Conference’s 211-186 victory.

However, Lillard’s favourite part of the game happened off the court.

The great player for the Milwaukee Bucks spent time with his children, including his daughter Kali, who wanted to take pictures of him holding his MVP award. It was the cutest moment ever.

“Daddy, I want to snap a photo of you!” Kali Lillard let out a cry.

Fans attending one of Taylor Swift‘s Sydney shows are being encouraged to wear special friendship bracelets in honour of a fellow-Swiftie who died on the way to her Melbourne concert.

 

Mieka Pokarier, 16, was killed when the SUV she was traveling in with her mother and sister collided with a semi-trailer near Dubbo, in central-west NSW at about 6pm on Thursday.

The family had been driving to Melbourne from the Gold Coast on the ‘trip of a lifetime’ to see Swift perform the Australian leg of her Eras tour.

Mieka’s younger sister Freya, 10, was seriously injured in the crash on Dunedoo Road, at Ballimore.

She was airlifted to Westmead Hospital where she remains in a coma with brain injuries, a damaged pelvis and a broken leg.

Swift’s fans, known as Swifties, swap self-made bracelets with each other during concerts. They are being urged to make and share them in honour of Mieka, with her name on them.

In a post made to Taylor Swift Eras Tour Facebook page a fan called on Swifties to wear a friendship bracelet with Mieka’s name.

‘To honour them the family is asking everyone to wear a friendship bracelet with her name so its like she’s still there. Mieka is her name.’

‘I will also be handing out bracelets with her name in her honour as well.’

On Monday the children’s godmother Karleigh Fox, who organised a GoFundMe appeal, said Freya remains in a critical yet stable condition.

NSW Police said in a statement that the crash is under investigation.

The pop star hit the stage just after 7pm on Friday night for the first show of her Australian leg of the tour to a staggering crowd of 96,000 concert goers.

She jetted into Sydney on Monday ahead of her four-day concert run at Accor Stadium this week.

But Swifties are now worried the megastar may not even make it on stage thanks to the Harbour City’s extreme weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hailstones for much of NSW on Friday and Saturday, placing a question mark above Swift’s first and second Sydney shows.

According to the Accor Stadium website, ‘events will go ahead rain, hail or shine’ unless the safety of patrons and the artist is at risk.

This leaves the potential for organisers to make last minute adjustments to Swift’s shows depending on the severity of the weather.

‘It’s at Accor, so it’s not fully under cover. She’s performed in the rain before so it would have to be very heavy rain and lightning for her to postpone. She’s only postponed two shows during this tour, I believe,’ someone else surmised.

Taylor Swift was “devastated” after learning that a fan had died before her opening night concert in Brazil on Friday.

 

“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show. I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young,” she wrote on Instagram following her Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” she continued.

A young fan named Ana Clara Benevides Machado died before the Swift concert amid sweltering heat conditions. The fan fainted at the stadium and later died, with the cause of death remaining unknown.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, additionally mourned the loss of the Swift fan and announced new measures that will be enforced at the Nilton Santos Stadium for her remaining concerts.

“The loss of a young woman’s life yesterday at the show in Engenhão is unacceptable. Obviously, we are still finding out more details about the circumstances of what happened,” the mayor began on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“In any case, I have already ordered the municipality’s Executive Chief of Operations to demand action with the production of the show.”

Swift stopped her concert to pass out water due to sweltering conditions in Brazil. Fans are seen chanting, “Water” in a video posted online.

The tragic events unfolded amid a dangerous heat wave that swept across Rio de Janeiro.

Most Brazilian states face “great danger” from the heat, according to the National Institute of Meteorology. The institution issued a red alert for the center-west, southeast and parts of the north warning of “a high probability of major damage and accidents, with risks to physical integrity or even human life.”

The heat index — a combination of temperature and humidity — hit 58.5 degrees Celsius (137 Fahrenheit) earlier this week, the highest index ever recorded there.
