LeBron James still committed to Paris Olympics, but health remains the big key

LeBron James still wants to participate in the Paris Olympics this summer, sure sounds like extending his NBA career for at least a couple more seasons is an option and said he would like to see his playing days end as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Of course, not even he knows if any or all of that is possible.

James played in his 20th All-Star Game on Sunday, extending his record for appearances in the NBA’s midseason showcase, but arrived with a plan to not be on the court in Indianapolis for very long because of an ongoing treatment plan for his problematic left ankle. He had eight points in 14 minutes during the first half and didn’t start the second half, giving up his spot to Golden State’s Stephen Curry.

“The most important thing for me is definitely my health,” James said.

And that will be the deciding factor in just about all of James’ basketball decisions for the rest of his career — short-term, long-term, however long he has left on his unprecedented resume. The first priority right now is the playoffs, with the Lakers currently 30-26 and ninth in the Western Conference even after winning six of their last seven games.

“We’re trending in the right direction,” James said.

He is 39, having played more minutes than anyone in NBA history. If he comes back this fall for a 22nd season — and he intends to — he’ll tie Vince Carter for the NBA record in that department. He insists that he doesn’t know how long he wants to play, either.

For now, it’s all about the Lakers and their postseason push. After that, he’ll decide whether to play for USA Basketball this summer. At this point, Paris is in his plans.

“I told myself before the season, when I committed to being part of the Olympic team, obviously it was all predicated on my health,” James said. “As it stands right now, I am healthy enough to be on the team and perform at a level that I know I can perform at.”

The Olympic question is a bit tricky.

The Lakers’ season could end in April, May or June. If it ends early, James will have tons of time to heal up and get ready for a U.S. training camp that starts in early July, then will have a number of exhibition games, followed by the Olympics that will end in mid-August. But if the Lakers make a deep postseason run, it might prompt James to say he’ll value time off and getting ready for the 2024-25 NBA season over jamming another five or six weeks of basketball into his summer schedule.

“It’s more miles put on these tires,” said James, a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic gold medalist. “But if I’m committed — which I am — to Team USA, then I’m going to commit my mind, body and soul to being out there for Team USA, being out there representing our country with the utmost respect and go out there and play.”

He’s 132 points away from reaching 40,000 for his regular-season career, which means he’s likely somewhere around five games from hitting that milestone. There aren’t a lot of records left to chase; James is already the scoring king and his place in history was secured long, long ago. He’s long said he wants to play in an NBA that has one of his sons in it and USC freshman Bronny James would be eligible to enter the draft this spring.

“I have not mapped out how many seasons I have left,” James said. “I know it’s not that many.”

He hasn’t even figured out if he wants a retirement tour for a final season where he’ll be saying goodbye in every NBA city or if choosing to “Tim Duncan it” — meaning going out very quietly, like the San Antonio star who never wanted any attention — will be the plan.

“I’ve never been that great with accepting praise,” James said. “It’s a weird feeling for me.”

James could also be a free agent this summer if he chooses to go that route. He has a player option for more than $51 million for next season and most players wouldn’t pass up making that kind of money. But James’ net worth has been estimated to exceed $1 billion already, his off-court investments are varied, and it’s probably a safe bet that the size of the paycheck no longer is a top priority.

“I am a Laker, and I am happy, very happy, being a Laker the last six years and I hope it stays that way,” James said. “But I don’t have the answer to how long it is, or which uniform I’ll be in. Hopefully, it is with the Lakers. It’s a great organization, with so many greats with it. I don’t know how it’s going to end, but it’s coming. It’s coming for sure.”

Johnny Manziel: I ‘regret disrespecting’ LeBron James, not giving ‘a f–k enough’ in Cleveland

Johnny Manziel wishes he did things differently in Cleveland — and with Lebron James.

The 2014 first-round pick of the Browns, who infamously flamed out in his brief NFL tenure, expressed regret on Wednesday about how he handled things with the Cavaliers icon and marketing manager Maverick Carter.

The ex-quarterback jumped on the “Club Shay Shay” show with Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe to discuss a wide range of issues, one of them being his short-lived time in Cleveland that did not go the way he or the Browns wanted.

. @JManziel2 on @RealSkipBayless saying he’ll be bigger than @KingJames in Cleveland & disappointing Skip:“Skip, I love you bro. I hope you know it was always love, and I honestly feel like I let him down.” pic.twitter.com/7HszZv5VRJ

    — Club Shay Shay (@ClubShayShay) February 21, 2024

Manziel admitted on the show that after signing with Carter, he treated both his manager and James poorly.

The former signal-caller, who only played eight NFL games and completed just 57 percent of his passes, went as far as to say Carter and James still are angry with him after dumping him as a client in January 2016.

“The thing that I realize now is the reason why they’re probably still pissed at me to this day: They don’t lose. They don’t bet on anything that’s not a sure thing,” Manziel said. “And what I did and the way I carried myself and the way that I was in my time during Cleveland was pure and blatant disrespect to them giving me everything that I could have ever needed to be successful.

“So something that still to this day, I think now that we’re talking about it, I haven’t completely truly got over yet how I let them down.”

Manziel previously revealed in a Netflix documentary on his life that he battled substance abuse issues and mental health problems during his time in Cleveland, contemplating taking his own life after the Browns released him in 2016.

Johnny Manziel expressed a lot of regret for his time in Cleveland.Club Shay Shay/X

Speaking with Sharpe, Manziel said his struggles with depression led him to shunting James to the side, even when the NBA legend tried to hang out with Manziel when they were both free.

Manziel said James would text him every week to watch some games and play poker with other friends, but because of his mental health in decline, he barely could get out of bed.

“I was so depressed for the first time in my life that even my biggest role model and inspiration in my life couldn’t get me out of bed to come and hang out with them,” he said. You know, when I went to the Cavs games, I went, I was in and I was out. I didn’t really grasp and latch on to him in a way that I should have. And he tries to take me under his wing, right? And I’m just kind of nudging it away because of where my mental [health] is and being just fully depressed and where I was in my life. Is that excuse?

LeBron James gives cryptic answer about son and USC star Bronny James’ NBA Future

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has made it abundantly clear that he wants to play in the NBA with his oldest son Bronny James before he retires.

Prior to this college basketball season, the five-star freshman was appearing in NBA mock drafts, being projected to go somewhere in the top 10. Unfortunately for James Jr., he had a cardiac arrest incident in the summer, which sidelined him for a few months. Once he made his debut for USC this season, he started the year on a minutes restriction but did have some bright moments. He has since been playing more, but his production isn’t what most were expecting.

James Jr. is averaging just 5.7 points per game along with 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 36% from the field and 27.5% from three. He has since plummeted out of mock drafts with most thinking that he should return to USC for a second year. Whether or not that is his plan is unclear, and as expected, when his father was asked about him declaring for the draft this year he didn’t provide much of anything.

“It’s up to him. It’s up to the kid,” James told Inside the NBA ahead of the All-Star Game. “Obviously we gonna go through the whole process. He’s still in season now, has the Pac-12 tournament coming up. … We gonna weigh our options, and we gonna let the kid make the decision.”

There are however thoughts around the league that James would take a pay cut to sign with a team if they are willing to draft his son. Realistically, if James Jr. does declare for the NBA after this season, he likely won’t be able to contribute right now. He would however benefit from returning for another season, but his father has also been cryptic as to how much longer he plans to play.

This will be a huge offseason for the James family to say the least.

The great Michael Jordan turned 61 years old on Saturday and his daughter, Jasmine, posted a picture of her with her father on his special day.

“One & Only. Happy Birthday Daddyo.”

Jasmine, however, never went that route, but did pursue a career in sports. She studied sports management at Syracuse University and is now a basketball field rep for women’s sport marketing at Jordan Brand.

It was at Syracuse that she met her husband, Rakeem Christmas and their son, Rakeem Michael Christmas is the one with her and her father in that picture. A short while after posting that, Jasmine also shared a video of the little boy watching the 2024 All-Star Game as an Instagram story (expires in 10 hours).

While not many basketball fans were too happy with the All-Star game, because there was no defense being played and the East scored over 200 points, a kid like him probably enjoyed it. Who knows, maybe some day Rakeem will be playing in the All-Star Game, as his grandfather did so many times. He was only born on May 4, 2019, so we’ll have to wait for a while for that.

Michael Jordan was a cold-blooded assassin on the court and if there was one word you would have never associated with him during his incredible career, it was soft. Well, things have changed now, and Jasmine revealed Michael had gone soft in retirement.

“Michael Jordan, the grandpa, is soft,” Jasmine said, via Meredith Cash of Insider. “My son definitely has my dad wrapped around his finger. He loves being a grandfather, and my son is his first grandchild.”

That’s typical for most grandfather-grandchild relationships. The feeling of becoming a grandfather for the first time certainly would have been incredible for Jordan. He might soon have another grandchild as well, depending on how the relationship between Marcus and Larsa Pippen develops.

Tim Hardaway Jr. Reacts to LeBron James’ Admission of Regret in Naming His Son Bronny After Him.

Tim Hardaway Jr. thinks LeBron needs to adjust his strategy on what he really should be doing for Bronny’s career.

After realizing his son Bronny James (real name LeBron James Jr.) would have to deal with the pressure associated with his name, LeBron James regretted naming his son after him. But for Tim Hardaway Jr., who carries the name of his Hall of Fame dad Tim Sr., it’s best for “King James” to take it easy and let Bronny carve his own path in the game.

I understand where he’s coming from, but I mean your son’s gonna have to build his own legacy for sure,” Hardaway Jr. recently said on Buckets podcast.

Bronny has to do his part too

As much as Hardaway Jr. feels for James’ dilemma about his junior, he also points out that it will all boil down to what Bronny, the basketball player, and not LeBron’s son, can do on the court. Hardaway Jr. suggests that Bronny should work on making a name for himself because the smoke from his father’s legacy will eventually settle, one way or another.

That’s what my whole mindset has been throughout this whole entire process from when I started picking up a basketball till now. I think I’m doing a damn good job of it you know just create my own legacy and just making sure when I’m walking around they say that’s Tim Hardaway Jr. that’s not Tim hardaway’s son you know, so that’s like a big a big deal to me,” Hardaway Jr. explained.

LeBron has been a terrific dad

It’s safe to say Hardaway Jr.’s game is far from his dad’s. It is yet to be determined if LeBron and Bronny’s case is the same, but as far as being a supportive father goes, Hardaway Jr. thinks King James has been doing a commendable job. And for the record, the Dallas Mavericks shooting guard doesn’t see anything wrong about naming your son after you.

I think it’s great [that] you’re naming your son after you. I mean, it’s a privilege; it’s an honor to carry it to the best of your abilities. And whatever your son wants to do, just be behind him. I’m not telling them how to raise a kid or whatever, but you know from looks of it, [LeBron’s] doing a heck of a job,” Hardaway Jr. concluded.

As it stands, Bronny has not committed to any college yet. After playing for one season in any college or university, the 18-year-old will finally be eligible for NBA Draft in 2024.

Warriors Star Breaks Silence on LeBron James for Jonathan Kuminga Trade Idea

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James addressed the report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne that the Golden State Warriors explored trading for him, telling the NBA on TNT crew the following:

“It didn’t go far at all. I actually heard about it when everybody else heard about it. Obviously Charles been in the league, Kenny been in the league, Shaq been in the league, and sometimes there’s conversations that happen behind closed doors that you don’t even know about. Until, I guess, if it’s real or not, then they’ll bring it to you. But it never even got to me, so I heard it when the reports dropped as well.”

During an alternate broadcast of the All-Star Game, Warriors star Draymond Green revealed that he was against the idea of Jonathan Kuminga being dealt for James, saying, “When I talked to Joe [Lacob] on the phone, and we were discussing what we’d have to give up, I said if it’s Kuminga, the answer is no.”

This trade idea is one that has been floated around a lot when people have put together hypothetical trade packages that send James to the Warriors, but Green is not on board. Despite Green being close friends with James, he was against the idea of Kuminga being dealt for the Lakers star.

It seems the Warriors wouldn’t have done this trade anyways, but for a young player like Kuminga, it’s always good to have the backing of established veterans like Green. For now, James remains with the Lakers.
